I ▹ JUST ONE MORE GLASS
[ It's a few days before Jim actually leaves the house properly, though he still doesn't look all that great. He's combed his hair and put on mildly presentable clothes, but he's still sporting a short beard he hasn't cared to shave, and he's not looking like his usual cheerful self either.
During the first few days, it's all still a little too fresh on his mind, and his heart. He goes out but it's not with the intent of socializing so much as sitting by the bar on his own, asking the barkeep to pour him one glass after another. He spends most of the time staring down at the liquid swirling in his glass, gaze seldom lifting from the surface, though he will if someone happens to take a seat on the stool next to his.
He'll spare a vague smile if it's a stranger, and a few words if it's a familiar face: ] What brings you around here?

II ▹ MIDNIGHT RUN
[ It doesn't get better anytime soon. It's a process, Jim tries to tell himself, but he hates that he can't force himself to just be fine. He hates that he's nothing but a burden souring everyone's mood, and maybe that's why he thinks it would be for the best if he just avoided everyone.
On the other hand, he's lonely. He hates that. Can't stand being all alone in the empty loft when he leaves the guard. John's been putting up with him and keeping him company more often than not, but Jim knows that he can't very well hog all his time. He's got better things to do than stay with him.
So, when he can't sleep, and when he can't stand the deafening silence, he puts on running gear and goes out for a late night jog. There are always a few people around but it's generally quiet, and the parks are a good spot to just run until his legs hurt and his lungs burn. When he can't take it anymore and his head starts spinning, he lies down on the grass, staring up at the night sky. Anything to not be in his empty bed, staring up at the ceiling. ]

III ▹ THROW YOURSELF INTO YOUR WORK
[ After the end of the month, the levels of self-pity start getting a little ridiculous. He finds himself equal parts sad and angry at himself that he's just letting himself go down a spiral, as much as he tries to tell himself he's coping just fine.
He needs to do something. Be useful. Resume his life in the Quarantine the best he can, cling to whatever is still steady and present and normal in his life: his work.
He shaves finally, tidies up his place, even irons clothes and buys some ready-to-eat meals to stock up his fridge, and he shows up at the Perimeter Guard after a week and some looking mostly like himself. He's not as cheerful, granted, but he doesn't avoid or ignore anyone, though it's obvious he focuses on his work more than anything else. As the days go by people might catch him yawning at odd times, rubbing at his tired eyes still sporting dark circles that are proof of his lack of sleep.
Out on the shuttle, he might even start to doze off halfway through a flight. Whoever's with him should probably take helm control and just tell him to sit back, or else Jim's grip on the shuttle might just slip, giving them the scare of their lives. ]

Instead, she decides to use some of the new clothes she found with Lola and change into actual running pants, a jacket and those...tennis shoes. They're comfortable, otherwise she wouldn't have purchased them. Outfit on, she quietly went outside to head to the park. She does carry the lightsaber on her in a protective case around her hip.
It doesn't surprise her to see one or two people running around. She ignores them, setting out a pace for herself. Running gave her something to focus on, placing one foot in front of the other. The feeling of the cold air on her face, and listening to her heart beating faster with each step. She manages to do a lap until she notices someone on the grass. Her pacing slows down until she can see who it is. Concern flickers in her eyes as she moves to the grass and offers her hand to help her friend up.]
Need a hand?
no subject
That means he also can't hear someone else approaching, not until Rey's standing right next to him, and he opens his eyes, blinking a few times as they focus on her. ]
Rey. [ He ponders for a few seconds, licking his lips and swallowing dryly. Nodding, he takes her hand and struggles to his feet with a soft groan. ]
Thanks. [ He swats some bits of grass off his shorts, then looks up at her. He knows he's been a little absent from the perimeter guard the past week or so, which is why he asks. ] How've you been doing?
no subject
Welcome.
[She pushes a few strands of her hair away from her face. Her hair is still in it's usual three bun style. The new clothes are working out fine for her, and running in tennis shoes was a lot better than her own pair.]
I'm fine. [That's the automatic response. She doesn't want to talk much about what's on her mind, only to keep running or focus on something else. Jim though...he looked different. He seemed..off. There wasn't as much of a light in his eyes when he spoke.]
You?
no subject
Same as you.
[ Which is to say, he's at that point where he'll say he's just fine, but he's anything but fine.
He nods towards her, noting her attire. ] Out for a late night run, too?
no subject
Uh-huh.
[Best to start off there, letting him know that she didn't buy it.]
Yeah, I couldn't sleep. Figured I could clear my head a little, guessing it's the same for you.
[Because what two sane people would decide running at midnight would be a good idea? No one, that's who. Except those who were really concerned about their health, but they weren't worth mentioning right now.]
Want a running partner? Could push each other--and not literally push, just...yeah. [They need something to distract themselves with, and as much as Rey wants to ask, she'll wait until both of them are exhausted to do it.]

She knocks on the door, then, afraid he might not answer, calls out to him as well.]
Jim? Jim, it's Beverly. I... I just found out.
no subject
For a brief moment, he actually debates pretending he's not home. But eventually he goes to the door, pulling it open to let her in. ]
Hey.
[ He inhales, then exhales with a sigh, turning around and making his way back into the house. There are various boxes packed up all over the place, which is looking overall emptier than usual. Evidently he's getting ready to move out. ]
You didn't have to come, Beverly.
no subject
Yes, I did. You're my friend, and so is Leonard.

He makes his way to a table nearby, grabbing the bottle there and pouring another couple fingers into the glass next to it. ] Want a drink?

Oh, dear. Are you dead?
no subject
Not quite, just yet.
[ His lips curl a little. Despite everything, Loki does always manage to get a smile out of him. ]
What are you doing... here? And if you tell me you're actually exercising, I might just— actually be surprised.
no subject
I was out for a stroll up there when I saw a body prostrate in the middle of the field. I thought it was best to poke it with a stick and see if it was dead, but it turns out it's you, and you're just ... winded from too much cardio? For shame, Jim! Everyone knows, weights are where it's at.
no subject
[ He manages a weak chuckle, vague and not quite there. Finally he forces himself to sit up, hands resting on the grass behind him, keeping the weight of his torso propped up. ]
Just wanted to burn off some excess energy. Besides, the gyms are all closed at this hour.

A distraction. And to see whether they will ever make drinks strong enough for a God.
no subject
[ And also an excellent distraction, not just for Loki but for himself as well. ]
I wish I could get my hands on Saurian brandy around here. Got a feeling that might've done the trick, for you.
no subject
So have many drinks boasted, but I have yet to see proof of such things. And with Asgard gone, the ability to get oneself inebriated is harder than before.
no subject
[ In the meantime, he waves down the bartender and asks him for the strongest drink they have. ]

Jina, stop that! Come here!
[The voice starts out sounding distant, but it seems to be getting closer. "Jina," a Great Dane with a harlequin coat, ceases her licking and eagerly runs back to her owner, Billy. He approaches, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand while holding onto Jina's red collar with the other.]
Er, sorry about that. She still needs obedience training.
[Billy was still wearing his hat along with his usual attire, even the finger-less gloves despite the chilly weather. He preferred to be able to feel the handles of his knives rather than have a barrier between them and his fingertips.]
I didn't see you there, or else I would have kept her on the leash.
no subject
It doesn't take much at all to piece together that the dog's name is Jina, and that the man approaching is her owner. He looks up at him as he gets closer, shaking his head and smiling. ]
Don't worry about it. It's not like she attacked me viciously. [ He shrugs. ] Besides, I like dogs.
[ Still feeling a little too dizzy to get up, he crosses his legs and reaches out to the pup, waiting for her to come over again so he can pet her. ] C'mere, girl!
no subject
Go on then, you've been forgiven.
[And she's back up close to the kind stranger's face again, though she refrains from licking him this time. A deep bark sounds from her throat as she jumps around Jim, wagging her tail. Billy kneels down beside them, patting the dog's back.]
Who doesn't like dogs? They're friendly, loyal, and great hunting partners with the right training, but I'm content with Jina just being herself. She'd probably rather play with the prey than kill it anyway. [He chuckles.]
no subject
You'd be surprised. Plenty of people aren't into dogs. [ He smooths his hands down the pup's sides, glancing over at the man with a shrug. ] Their loss, if you ask me.
[ Not that he has a dog, nor does he plan to get one. He just doesn't have the time for an animal who'd require so much attention. He can barely take care of himself right now as it is. ]
I'm Jim, by the way. [ He offers a hand to the man for a shake— and Jina promptly paws at it, demanding more belly scratches. Jim laughs. ]

iii.
[he goes out in the shuttle with jim, simply because he does not trust the other man to take care of it by himself right now. his concern is proven true when he literally dozes in the middle of the flight. he's glad he did not make the decision to crawl into the back and take a nap like jyn, though he's pretty sure jim should be doing that instead.]
[cassian immediately starts to move him away from the helm. there will be no fighting him on this! that much is clear from his tone of voice.] Get up. You are not flying this anymore.
no subject
Not that it helps his general state of mind much, but it's a start.
It also doesn't help him sleep better at night either, which is why he's dozing off mid-flight, despite his constant struggle to keep his eyes open. It's stubbornness, nothing else. Cassian's as good a pilot as he is, even better actually, by virtue of experience and habit if nothing else. Jim startles when he feels Cassian's hands on him, sitting upright and eyes snapping open almost violently. The shuttle, thankfully, hasn't lost any altitude, but there was a very minor bump that has been more than enough to give him a real scare.
He doesn't fight him, not on this. Not just because he's too tired to do so, but especially because he's not alone on the shuttle, there are two people with him and he'd rather throw himself off the cargo bay doors right now than risk their safety just because he's too stubborn to admit that he's not alright. ]
Right. [ He nods, and slowly gets up from his seat, moving to the one next to it, its helm offline, so Cassian can take the pilot's seat. Letting his head fall back against the headrest, he lets out a shaky sigh. ] Sorry... Christ. I'm sorry.
no subject
[until the ship slants, of course.]
[cassian slips into the pilot seat with familiarity, making only one or two minor adjustments and making sure the shuttle is still smooth sailing. he caught jim early enough that there's no real concern for the flight - just concern for jim.] You are not flying this again at all until you take a nap, at the very least. This month has been taking its toll on you.
no subject
It's different, now. It's not that he's avoiding sleep, it's just that he can't fall asleep, not at night when he's lying in bed, counting the threads in his sheet, or remembering painfully how Bones's arms felt around him. ]
I can't... can't fall asleep. [ He exhales and it comes out somewhere between a choked sob and a gasp. ] It's not that I don't want to.
