parabatai: lost & found
who: Jace Wayland and Alec Lightwood
what: Quiet discussion and figuring things out.
when: Soon after their arrival.
where: The Coffee Shop
warnings: Will update as needed.
All the stories are true. No one mentioned the one about a portal to a place whee worlds collided and he had to get a job. But here he was wandering an unfamiliar street with his parabatai and still staring at the sky. It was beautiful. He just couldn't feel the beauty or the awe or much of anything. He could feel Alec. That was all he needed at the moment.

"You're handling the weird really well." Jace commented, quickly seeking out the quietest corner where they wouldn't have to worry about being interrupted. A good place to keep his eyes on everyone else without being too obvious.

"I already had my freak out." It hadn't been pretty but at least he'd had his family with him. Alec still didn't understand why he remembered Max's death and Jace didn't, but his parabatai had been in bad shape when he'd arrived. "And this isn't weirder than waking up from an 'accident' and thinking I'd run off to be middle of nowhere Idaho to run a record store." Looking over the menu, he wished they had the tea Magnus used to steal for him, but coffee would work. "You're the one that seems to be worried over the weirdness."
no subject
If it wasn't for the bond he'd feel like an outsider looking in on something he was sure he could never have.
"You had a freak out over Max being in the hospital. But Max is fine and you and Magnus seem...fine...with all of this." He glanced around at the 'all of this' and then decided he needed the strongest black coffee he get his hands on. Preferably very hot and spiked with something even stronger.
But at the mention of Idaho Jace couldn't help looking at Alec like he couldn't believe what he was hearing. "Idaho? What the hell were you doing in Idaho?" Running a record store apparently. But that didn't actually answer his question.

Grinning at his parabatai he was about to say something about how much better this was than worrying about mutagens and lab created monsters, he paused when someone came to take their order. Deciding on coffee and a couple of cookies, he waited for Jace to order and they were alone again before speaking. "Yeah, we were in Idaho. I don't know how we got there. Probably the same way all of us ended up here. For weeks, we didn't remember anything about New York. I thought Robert and Maryse had basically disowned me because of Magnus."
no subject
Holding onto the curious questions he had about Idaho Jace jumped straight to the only thing they did seem to agree on at the moment. "I wouldn't say disowned, but Maryse was not happy." And then more carefully and quietly. "With either of us."
Glancing around the shop, Jace quickly changed the subject. "What does a Shadowhunter and a Warlock do in Idaho? Hunt potatoes? You mentioned a record store?"
no subject
"Actually, there were zombies. Or they were close enough to them that Simon would call them that." Wait. He'd actually remembered the right name. He'd have to tell Izzy the next time he saw her. "Before the attempted zombie apocalypse, I ran a record store. Magnus threw parties when he wasn't trying to remember how to cast spells. Izzy had a clothing store."
no subject
But the smile Jace had remembering that moment faded and he unconsciously mimicked Alec, sitting back in his chair and watching the way Alec touched the ring on his finger.
"Sounds very...Mundane." Alec, Magnus, and Izzy. Where was he? Too busy leaving everyone behind. Nearly losing Alec. "Even the Zombie's."
no subject
"It was. I didn't really remember going on missions so it didn't feel weird. It was peaceful." Something that Alec had never really thought that he'd get a chance to experience. Noticing that their order was about to arrive, Alec glanced over at the server so that Jace knew that someone was headed toward the table. "The zombies were not Mundane. I was afraid Magnus and I were going to kill ourselves trying to keep the wards up." Thankfully, they been able to find other ways to power Magnus' spells.
no subject
"You did the right thing. Lydia was a good match for you, but she wasn't Magnus." There was fondness and respect. Alec had followed his heart. He and Magnus were traveling the worlds together now. "You make a good team."
no subject
"We are a good team, but who's Lydia?" He tried to remember if he'd ever met anyone in Idris or at the Institute with that name. Even during his travels with Magnus in Europe he couldn't remember meeting a Shadowhunter with that name. "I don't know what you're talking about." Had Jace gone on a weird side trip to a place like Wayward Pines before arriving here? "Did something happen to you that I don't know about?"
no subject
"The kiss was hot, but hot enough to make you forget the bride?"
He wasn't ready to discuss what had happened to him after he'd walked through the portal with Valentine. But he couldn't ignore Alec actually forgetting Lydia.
no subject
Wait... Lydia. Bride. "Why would I marry a woman?" Even before he was out of the closet no one really thought about him marrying. "I'm gay, remember?" Maybe Jace didn't remember. He could think Alec was bi like Magnus. "Jace, there's no way I'd agree to that!"
no subject
Something was wrong.
"You didn't." He slowly set his cup on the table and glanced around at the shop. Was this another test? A trick? A spell? A glamour? He didn't remember turning himself over to Aldertree. He remembered turning away from Alec and stepping out of the portal here. "You didn't marry Lydia. It's complicated and I don't know why you don't remember."
no subject
"Whatever took the three of us to Idaho did something to our memories. For weeks we didn't remember our lives outside of town and they gave us false memories..." Maybe the scientists had done the same thing to Jace, but hadn't made sure that their memories lined up. The same had happened when he'd discussed the past with Izzy. "My memory might still be hazy but I don't know why I'd marry Lydia, whoever she is. I wouldn't - "
Sighing, he took a drink of his coffee then began twisting the mug between his palms. "There's a reason why Maryse says I won't give her grandchildren." Shadowhunters married for very specific reasons if they didn't marry for love and Alec wouldn't be able to help Lydia, whoever she was, with those.

Now Clary is his sister. His father is a murderer and a traitor. Alec is married to Magnus. Happily married to Magnus. And Magnus had been the one to keep Alec from slipping away completely. Magnus had stood by Alec, protected him. All Jace had done was beg Alec not to leave and make a mess of everything else. He had been the reason. Maybe his father was right. No matter hard he tried to be good his demon blood would inevitably win.
"It's fine, Alec. It's not you." It was him. It had to be.
no subject
"That is not an answer." Breaking off a piece of one of the cookies, he gave Jace a look that warned that he knew that his friend wasn't eating. Whatever was wrong with Jace was more important than whoever this Lydia was. "Something's going on with you and you can't keep hiding it from me. Every time you've tried, we almost lost you."
no subject
Taking a deep breath he pulled his hands back from the table and stared at Alec's piece of cookie. The piece meant for him.
"I don't mean to hurt people. To hurt you." He looked at Alec, the sincerity of what he was saying shining, unshed, in his eyes. "Apparently....it's in my blood, my nature."
no subject
Nudging the cookie closer to his parabatai, he waited to see if he'd take it. If he didn't eat... Alec had not qualms about guilting Jace when needed. They'd been doing similar things to each other almost since they'd met.
Sensing something was off with Jace, it took him a moment to realize that his parabatai was near tears. Jace rarely cried. After his father died, in secret when no one but Alec could see or after soem of the things Sebastian had done, but not in public. Not over a simple conversation. "You're not hurting me, Jace. There's a difference between confusing and hurting." One that Jace should know. It was almost like he was ten again, waiting for someone to punish him for simply existing. Alec hadn't understood the reasons for that behavior when they were boys but now that they were older, he knew what had caused it. "Whatever it is, you can tell me. I'm your parabatai."
no subject
Jace didn't cry in public, but he was close. It seemed like he'd been close too often lately. He was close now, but he'd spent his entire life controlling his emotions. Focusing on the piece of cookie helped. He took it. Not to eat. Just to make Alec happy.
"I don't even know where to start. Can you believe it? Me. Finding it difficult to talk about myself."
Reluctantly, he took a bite of the cookie. To make Alec happy, not because he was actually hungry.
"Something is wrong with me, Alec." He managed after a moment trying to swallow that one bite. He set the rest of the cookie on the table. "I can't trust my own mind right now. I'm...scared...this is all a glamour or a spell and I'm going to wake up and I'm still going to be chained up on Valentine's ship."
no subject
It was probably a strange way to mark their lives, but since Jace hadn't been surprised that he was in a relationship, whatever had happened had to be after that.
Considering how injured Jace had been at the hospital, the stab wound and the obvious sign of a fight, he assumed it had been after he'd gone hunting for Sebastian in Idris. "I can believe it. Remember I don't believe that act you put on for everyone else."
He was about to tell Jace that there was nothing wrong with him when his parabatai said two things that he rarely admitted to. He was scared. The Shadowhunter that at first hadn't needed a Fearless rune to confront the worst demons was afraid. The other comment didn't make sense. Valentine had never chained Jace up. At least Jace had never told Alec that he had. "I don't know what you're talking about with Valentine, but I'm really here. We both are. I'm not going to disappear."
no subject
And then he was focused on Alec. Remembering with perfect clarity the way his dark hair stuck to his skin when he finally opened his eyes and looked at Jace. The way they had clung to each other. He remembered the moment when he was sure he'd lost Alec. The absolute terror and grief.
Even now he he was fighting to stay in his seat. He wanted to reach out and touch Alec's face. Hug him. Hold Alec to him and feel that he was alive and safe. He wanted to believe Alec wouldn't simply disappear if he turned away or closed his eyes.
"I never imagined anything could make me feel so lost, so scared, so alone, and in so much pain I wanted to die. Until I held you in my arms and begged you not to leave me and....for a moment...you did."
It was as if the entire shop didn't exist. Jace was completely focused on Alec, on that memory, and knowing it was his fault Alec had nearly died trying to find him.
no subject
Maybe he was wrong about the time frame. Maybe Jace had been brought here after the Angel had resurrected him. This could be some aftereffect of Jace's runes being altered. He'd pushed Alec and everyone away, encouraging Alec to spend time iwth Magnus, so he'd never gotten a true sense of how the bond felt while Jace struggled with the attempts at possession.
"What Valentine did doesn't matter right now but eventually we'll have to talk about it." Avoiding issues and letting Jace push him away was part of the reason why Sebastian had been able to manipulate them.
Still not understanding what was going on, Alec leaned in and hugged Jace, not caring who saw. "I'm here, Jace. I didn't die." But Alec still couldn't figure out what Jace meant. The only time that Alec had nearly died in his arms was after they fought the Greater Demon and that was weeks before they'd gone to Idris. "I know how it feels to be that lost but I'm here. If you focus on the bond, you'll know this is real."
no subject
"I love you, Alec."
To love is to destroy, to be loved is to be the one destroyed. His father taught him that when he still young and working so hard to earn his fathers approval and praise. But Jace couldn't imagine his life without Alec. He couldn't imagine not loving him or not being loved by Alec.
"I'll tell you anything you want to know. Just not here."
no subject
When he was sure that he could pull away without Jace thinking he didn't want him near, he sat back to consider is parabatai. Keeping one hand on his arm, he knew he wouldn't get any answers as long as they weren't alone. None of the others would bother them if they hid for awhile, knowing that they needed time together. "We can go back home and talk there."
no subject
A bond he'd been ignoring more recently. He needed to fix everything between them. He couldn't risk losing Alec again.
Pushing a stray strand behind his ear, Jace nodded. But before he started to get up he reached for the piece of cookie Alec had given him and finished it.
