[ This is a mingle log, so everyone feel free to write up your own starters, or just vaguely list out things your character might be up to, so other people know how they'd encounter them and where/how to engage. Some ideas for Perimeter Guard stuff:

• studying maps and working on map expansion;
• compiling wild animal data, reading/writing reports, other boring paperwork stuff;
• checking weaponry and devices, making repairs, etc.;
• going beyond the wall for a bit of surveying and exploration;
• checking out the shuttle currently being repaired (only Poe and Jim would actually be able to take it out for a test flight of any kind, but feel free to poke either of us if you'd like to thread that out!).

Not necessarily. [ Jim shrugs. ] Not everyone takes well to going beyond the walls on their first few tries. Besides, there's always the risk of running into one of the wild animals prowling out there.

[ Which isn't to say she couldn't handle herself, of course. Mostly he's curious about how she'd gotten along, and if she had any problems. ]

My parents were scientists, my mother took me on research trips when I was small. [ jyn's been going beyond walls for her entire life. with saw it was less research and more violence, but either way she seems fairly comfortable with the idea of it. animals don't bother her, they're no more difficult to deal with than the empire.

at least animals make sense. ]

Sounds like an exciting childhood. [ Jim smiles, a hint wistful for the sorts of experiences he could have had while growing up. Not that he feels like he's particularly lacking now. He certainly has more than made up for it over the years. ]

How did you like those trips? Will you tell me a little about them? [ It's as subtle as he can get when he's trying to learn more about a person who's obviously reserved. ]

[it's never hard to find jyn here, she's fairly predictable about the guard; the real surprise is spotting her talking with jim, though cassian supposes jim is probably doing most of the work. he could just let them be, but he and jyn were actually planning a trip and she looks vaguely ready to be a jerk.]

[whatever bratty thing she was about to reply with about her childhood trips is cut off when cassian drops a backpack at her side, with one slung over his own shoulder. it's probably for the best.]

Don't expect a real answer. [that's not a real hello either, cassian.] Hello again, Jim.

[ wow jyn was totally going to be nice, no just kidding she was going to be a brat just as expected and she purses her lips when cassian calls her out on it. jerk. she glances up at him, making a face. ] You interrupted us, I could have answered.

[ BUT NOW NO ONE WILL KNOW. ]

[ He looks up at Cassian's approach, eyebrows raising at the announcement. ] Hey, Cassian. [ He smiles, pursing his own lips and lifting a shoulder in a shrug. ]

Oh, I can be horribly annoying. I'd have gotten something out of her. [ Eventually. Look, if he can get a Vulcan to open up... ]

You guys going on a trip? [ He nods to the backpacks, interest piqued. ]

[he resists the urge to roll his eyes, but the look he shoots jyn in return probably makes it obvious anyway.] Could have is not the same as would have.

Feel free to keep trying though. I would love to hear it. [sarcasm?? in MY rebel spy?? it's more likely than you think.]

Outside the wall, yes.

I'm right here. [ jyn makes a face, mouth slanting down in a frown that is more chagrined than anything. how dare they both call her out like this. ]

Someone has to make sure Cassian isn't eaten out there.

[ Jim glances at Jyn with a shrug, offering an apologetic smile that really isn't all that apologetic. But at least he doesn't poke at her anymore, so there's that. ]

Very considerate of you. [ Though he has no doubt they both can look after themselves more than well. ] Any chance I can tag along?

[ Jim hasn't been taught not to wiggle into other people's business, evidently. ]

[jyn gets A Look. he's not going to get eaten!]

[the question, however, catches him off guard, but the only sign of it is the way his hands still for two seconds on the backpack. he supposes people do go beyond the wall in various group combinations.]

[cassian steals another glance at jyn first to gauge her thoughts before jim will get an answer. he only speaks towards jim though.] Itching to get out there yourself?

[ jyn shrugs. of all the people here jim is the one she finds least offensive as a human being (aka he's pretty chill, she doesn't dislike his company), so she wouldn't be bothered if he came along.

part of her feels like maybe she should warn jim that the two of them have a terrible track record for suicide mission and that everyone they know and love dies, but.... nah, that's unimportant.

maybe she misses the company of k2 rounding out their trio. ] We could use a third, sure.

[ He was not aware that being a human being was enough to be offensive, wow. ]

Brilliant. [ He grins briefly, evidently delighted to join them. Sorry guys, you've just adopted an overly excited golden retriever, hope you're cool with that. ] Let me just grab my backpack and I'll meet you by the doors.

[ And off he goes, tail wagging uncontrollably. I mean. ]

[he is maybe a little surprised jyn agrees, but there's no sign of it. small parties tend to be ideal, but three still falls under small. he knows how to work in various set ups.]

[when jim practically skips away, he looks back at jyn.] That was unexpected. [of her, not jim.] But I'm ready when you are.

[he hoists his backpack back over his shoulder and gestures at hers, waiting for her to finish up before they head over to the doors.]

What? You're the one that's always telling me I don't have time to make friends. [ and they have plenty of time to do whatever they want now, so there. she's just finally (teasingly) dragging him for jedha, fleeting smirk touching her expression. her friends came in super handy shut ur face.

foisting her backpack over her shoulder she nudges him with her elbow before moving, walking with cassian to the doors. ]

[ To be fair, Jim's very good at making friends, and a little sneaky about it too. Not purposefully, mind. More of a natural skill than anything else. Granted, for now Jyn merely tolerates him, but give her a couple of months. He'll grow on her. Like a fungus.

Backpack slung over his shoulder and a utility belt around his waist, he approaches them by the doors, smiling as he nods for them to lead the way out. ] Thanks for waiting. [ And not ditching him, he implies. ]

[he ducks his head in a very brief, very quick smile of a laugh. her friends did come in super handy. maybe she's friendlier than she thinks!]

[cassian only nods when jim arrives and says thanks, but he looks as ready to go as they are.] We did agree to wait.

[he pulls out a map to gesture at the general space they were planning to go towards.] We were going over here, just a little west of the river. There were not very many details about what is there, but last time we were close, it looked like there could be some sort of building.

Cassian's hoping to make it his summer home, [ jyn offers blithely. it was his chosen destination, not hers, so she thinks she has to right to tease him about it. she wanted to explore the plants more, cassian out logic'd her and thus: west they go. into the unknown regions, just like home. ]

[ Jim nods as he takes a peek into the map. Jyn's offhanded remark gets a crooked smirk and a faint chuckle out of him, and he lifts a shoulder, tipping his head. ] Well, to each their own.

[ He nods towards the path as they step through the doorways and out beyond the wall. ] I'm just tagging along, so please. Lead the way.

[for the last time jyn, there could still be plants there! he just rolls his eyes and ignores her completely as he steps out; he's already kind of leading even if they're all walking at the same pace. he just quietly hopes he won't have to slow or stop, but his back has been mostly okay lately.]

I'm hoping there will be something worth bringing back.

It may be a few hours walk. Two, three. Four if we are unlucky.

We're always unlucky. [ it's not necessary to point out as she's shifting the way her pack rests against her shoulders, but it's better not to imagine they're only going to be walking a while.

it's no worse than jedha, at least it's not cold here, though jyn still -- out of habit maybe -- winds the scarf wrapped around one of the backpack straps around her neck, lifting it to cover her hair. it'll protect her pale skin from the dappled sunlight. ]

Do you do a lot of walking? [ to kirk. maybe they have speeders where he is from, maybe he owned one. ]

Oh, good. You're an optimist, I see. [ His tone is sarcastic but playful. Jim's all too familiar with pessimists or 'worst case scenario' sort of people, so this doesn't faze him much.

To her question, he nods. ] A fair share. It depends on the away missions, what sorts of planets we visit, and the like. Sometimes we end up traveling for weeks or months without a stop in sight, and we're basically trapped on the ship for all that while, but I try to keep active anyway.

But here— I do a whole lot of walking, in the Quarantine. Almost every day.

[he gives her bad shoulder a suspicious look, but says nothing. he refuses to be called out for his own lingering injuries.]

[jim is definitely hanging out with a couple of very pessimistic people who sometimes flirt with the idea of hope though.]

Your ships can sustain themselves for months without stopping at all? [even the destroyers needed to land for maintenance when they weren't landing to terrorize. maybe not as often, but it was hard to think about them not coming down on a random planet every few weeks at the least. he's now imagining jim's ship being massive on that scale.]

[ they're dead, jim. jyn gets to be as much a pessimist as she wants. ]

The Enterprise is a lot bigger than Rogue One. [ "considerably larger", but because now they're talking about jim's ship and that was actually an enjoyable conversation and because cassian doesn't count as a witness so no one will believe jim if he says anything, jyn teases. ] Love of his life, she is.

[ Luckily for Jim, he's more than used to handling pessimists, and he's not so easily brought down. He's too confident to not be optimistic, even when faced with the worst of odds.

Jim chuckles at Jyn's quip, not knowing her enough to truly appreciate how rare it is for her to tease. It's a nice change from her usually somber demeanor, though. ] Well, wouldn't go that far, but... close enough. And yes, most of the fleet's starships can travel for months on end without stopping. It's not ideal, obviously, but it's easily doable.

[he nearly does a double take when jyn teases jim, then catches himself but only because there's a third party. it doesn't make it any less weird though!] Rogue One was tiny. Most ships would be bigger than it.

And most of the ships back home with high sustainability aren't exactly what we would call friendly explorers like yourself and your Enterprise. [deadly explorers?? land on a planet and drain the resources explorers??]
