[ This is a mingle log, so everyone feel free to write up your own starters, or just vaguely list out things your character might be up to, so other people know how they'd encounter them and where/how to engage. Some ideas for Perimeter Guard stuff:

• studying maps and working on map expansion;
• compiling wild animal data, reading/writing reports, other boring paperwork stuff;
• checking weaponry and devices, making repairs, etc.;
• going beyond the wall for a bit of surveying and exploration;
• checking out the shuttle currently being repaired (only Poe and Jim would actually be able to take it out for a test flight of any kind, but feel free to poke either of us if you'd like to thread that out!).

Oh, good. You're an optimist, I see. [ His tone is sarcastic but playful. Jim's all too familiar with pessimists or 'worst case scenario' sort of people, so this doesn't faze him much.

To her question, he nods. ] A fair share. It depends on the away missions, what sorts of planets we visit, and the like. Sometimes we end up traveling for weeks or months without a stop in sight, and we're basically trapped on the ship for all that while, but I try to keep active anyway.

But here— I do a whole lot of walking, in the Quarantine. Almost every day.

[evasives]

[he gives her bad shoulder a suspicious look, but says nothing. he refuses to be called out for his own lingering injuries.]

[jim is definitely hanging out with a couple of very pessimistic people who sometimes flirt with the idea of hope though.]

Your ships can sustain themselves for months without stopping at all? [even the destroyers needed to land for maintenance when they weren't landing to terrorize. maybe not as often, but it was hard to think about them not coming down on a random planet every few weeks at the least. he's now imagining jim's ship being massive on that scale.]

[realists]

[ they're dead, jim. jyn gets to be as much a pessimist as she wants. ]

The Enterprise is a lot bigger than Rogue One. [ "considerably larger", but because now they're talking about jim's ship and that was actually an enjoyable conversation and because cassian doesn't count as a witness so no one will believe jim if he says anything, jyn teases. ] Love of his life, she is.

[ Luckily for Jim, he's more than used to handling pessimists, and he's not so easily brought down. He's too confident to not be optimistic, even when faced with the worst of odds.

Jim chuckles at Jyn's quip, not knowing her enough to truly appreciate how rare it is for her to tease. It's a nice change from her usually somber demeanor, though. ] Well, wouldn't go that far, but... close enough. And yes, most of the fleet's starships can travel for months on end without stopping. It's not ideal, obviously, but it's easily doable.

[evasives]

[he nearly does a double take when jyn teases jim, then catches himself but only because there's a third party. it doesn't make it any less weird though!] Rogue One was tiny. Most ships would be bigger than it.

And most of the ships back home with high sustainability aren't exactly what we would call friendly explorers like yourself and your Enterprise. [deadly explorers?? land on a planet and drain the resources explorers??]

[realists]

[ yeah, that's right, buddies. jyn is capable of humor. you saw it here first, no one will ever believe you. she raises her eyebrows at cassian like SAY SOMETHING I DARE YOU ]

They're called Star Destroyers for a reason, hard emphasis on destroyer.

[ Jim doesn't need people to believe him, he'll just appreciate it for what it means. Jyn struck him as someone very closed off from the beginning, so any sign that she's getting friendlier around him is a very good thing. ]

I... alright, well, I can assure you Starfleet has absolutely no intention or means to actually destroy any stars out there. [ Let's just not talk about Ambassador Spock and his not-so-neat trick with the red matter. ] Our fleet is made up almost entirely of exploration vessels. They are armed and capable of being in battle, granted, but it's mainly for defense purposes. More of a... 'attack them if they attack us first' kind of thing.

[ And even then, Jim personally would rather only retaliate if there really was no other alternative. ]

[evasives]

[there is absolutely nothing imperial about jim. he's too openly good. cassian has met a lot of imperials, and no one with a captain ranking got it by being friendly and adventurous. he can believe starfleet is more exploratory than invasive a navy, even if the concept sounds utterly fake to him.]

And who would attack such an inoffensive fleet? [even with a peaceful mantra, cassian knows the galaxy is full of all kinds of people. maybe someone really hates starfleet. maybe there's pirates. there are a lot of choices! he just wants to know more. but at least this time it's for curiosity's sake and not a compulsion.]

[realists]

[ there's a faint scoff from jyn, not derisive enough to derail the conversation, just enough to note that there's loads of people that would attack an exploratory fleet. she knows cassian knows that so she doesn't feel the need to point it out, especially as she's the same kind of curious. ]

[winscenario]

The universe isn't all perfect that way. We strive for peace and aim to make friends along the way, but not everyone out there feels the same way. Some species are still hellbent on fighting their wars, and some are just naturally suspicious. Understanding makes friends out of very different people, but not everyone's willing do do that, sadly.

[ Still, Jim thinks it's worth it, even if they're successful only a handful of times. It's still progress, even if they leave a planet without having made a solid or lasting connection with the people inhabiting it. ]

[evasives]

[it makes sense logistically but it doesn't actually give cassian a direct answer as to what sort of people. he can fill in the blanks of course, there are plenty of parallels in his own galaxy.]

Do you try again, or leave them to their own devices? One would hope you do not get yourself involved in their wars either, for a peaceful operation.

[realists]

[ jyn has a feeling that they might try again. somehow kirk manages to get around her cactus exterior, after all. ]

They might have no choice. Plenty of people get pulled into wars they don't wish to fight.

[winscenario]

Well, you know what they say. If at first you don't succeed... [ Keep being an annoying little shit until people have no other choice but to give in. ]

But yes, we do try to stay away from other people's conflicts. It's one of our many orders, directives and regulations that strictly define what we can or can't do, or the degree to which we are allowed to get involved in specific situations. [ Not that Jim is that stellar at following orders. /COUGHprimedirectivewhatCOUGH ]

[evasives]

[there's a bit of a pause.]

And how often do you break that rule?

[or any rule. every single impression he's gotten of jim leads him to believe it's at least once a month that some rule is broken because jim is following his heart or whatever optimistic garbage people like him bleed out.]

[as though he didn't join a death mission on a surge of hope but whATEVER]

I am sure there are some conflicts you find impossible to leave be.

[realists]

Perhaps a galaxy ruled by an Empire that imposes it's "peace" through tyranny?

[ just as casual example. she doesn't really need to ask if kirk would be on the rebellion's side -- she has no doubts that kirk would want to personally punch the emperor in the face. ]

[winscenario]

Officially? Almost never. Like, maybe once, possibly. [ Jim offers a neutral smile at Cassian's question, then looks over at Jyn. ]

That's no peace. It's just an excuse for megalomaniacs to do whatever they want.

[ That is, until someone stands up and says they've had enough. If all the people in a world, in a solar system or in a galaxy oppose something like that, then it's only a matter of time before such an Empire meets its own end. Jim genuinely believes that, anyway. ]

[evasives]

I am very aware of the differences between official and unofficial, Jim Kirk. [he says it lightly, maybe almost teasing. it's not meant to be dramatic, just a note that cassian does understand the difference. so many of his actions for the rebellion can absolutely be classified as "unofficial."]

Sometimes the official channel is just not enough. [a beat.] Especially to stop said megalomaniacs.

[realists]

[ she half smirks at cassian because BOY DOES HE KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. there is a reason their ship was called rogue one.

she nods at both of their answers, already having known cassian's. it's nice, though, to jim has the same kind of ideals, even if he seems leaps and bounds more optimistic and idealistic. ]

Unofficially?

[winscenario]

[ It's just what he's been born into, is all. Or what he eventually grew into. He wasn't always this optimistic, to be fair. ]

Unofficially, whenever I felt it was right to get involved. [ Starfleet or no Starfleet, he has his own personal moral code which stands above anything else. If he knows he can help someone, then he will, damn the consequences. (But then he's also lucky that he's pretty much Starfleet's poster boy so he's forgiven nearly all the stunts he pulls.) ]

[evasives]

[it would be nice if more people were like jim, but there was a reason the rebellion was so slow to get going. there were only so many channels certain rebel cells felt comfortable going through. he can imagine what choices jim might have made and it makes him a little glad that starfleet sounds much nicer an option.]

Consider me unsurprised. [but it's a compliment! jim is clearly a Good Person.]

Your galaxy is lucky to have you.

[ it's quiet because it's a genuine compliment and jyn hates feelings of any kind but she felt compelled to say it. ]

[ Jyn's quiet words actually surprise him, and he looks over with his eyebrows raised. Doesn't last long before he's smiling at her, though. ]

Thank you. [ Gosh, flatter him some more, won't you. ]

[jyn habit of sudden compliments almost feels like a tactic. catching people off guard. at least jim deserves the nice things, because cassian still often thinks he doesn't.]

[he will spare jim her awkward brush off though.] Do you plan to go back to it one day?

[realists]

[ wow she does no such thing! (she does exactly that thing.) in any case she's curious to the answer, she's curious about a lot of jim's world tbh, so she doesn't catch anyone with sly compliments before he answers. ]

[winscenario]

[ Jim isn't the type to mind a compliment, to be fair. It feels particularly nice coming from someone like Jyn, because he knows she means it.

He glances over at the question. Funny that it has him pausing, though the answer probably isn't that surprising. ] One day, yes. Absolutely. I mean, I like it here, and I don't mind being here for the time being, but... it's home. You know? There's nothing quite like it.
