( open ) get on board for perimeter guard shenanigans

[ This is a mingle log, so everyone feel free to write up your own starters, or just vaguely list out things your character might be up to, so other people know how they'd encounter them and where/how to engage. Some ideas for Perimeter Guard stuff:

• studying maps and working on map expansion;
• compiling wild animal data, reading/writing reports, other boring paperwork stuff;
• checking weaponry and devices, making repairs, etc.;
• going beyond the wall for a bit of surveying and exploration;
• checking out the shuttle currently being repaired (only Poe and Jim would actually be able to take it out for a test flight of any kind, but feel free to poke either of us if you'd like to thread that out!).

[ He was not aware that being a human being was enough to be offensive, wow. ]

Brilliant. [ He grins briefly, evidently delighted to join them. Sorry guys, you've just adopted an overly excited golden retriever, hope you're cool with that. ] Let me just grab my backpack and I'll meet you by the doors.

[ And off he goes, tail wagging uncontrollably. I mean. ]

[he is maybe a little surprised jyn agrees, but there's no sign of it. small parties tend to be ideal, but three still falls under small. he knows how to work in various set ups.]

[when jim practically skips away, he looks back at jyn.] That was unexpected. [of her, not jim.] But I'm ready when you are.

[he hoists his backpack back over his shoulder and gestures at hers, waiting for her to finish up before they head over to the doors.]

What? You're the one that's always telling me I don't have time to make friends. [ and they have plenty of time to do whatever they want now, so there. she's just finally (teasingly) dragging him for jedha, fleeting smirk touching her expression. her friends came in super handy shut ur face.

foisting her backpack over her shoulder she nudges him with her elbow before moving, walking with cassian to the doors. ]

[ To be fair, Jim's very good at making friends, and a little sneaky about it too. Not purposefully, mind. More of a natural skill than anything else. Granted, for now Jyn merely tolerates him, but give her a couple of months. He'll grow on her. Like a fungus.

Backpack slung over his shoulder and a utility belt around his waist, he approaches them by the doors, smiling as he nods for them to lead the way out. ] Thanks for waiting. [ And not ditching him, he implies. ]

[he ducks his head in a very brief, very quick smile of a laugh. her friends did come in super handy. maybe she's friendlier than she thinks!]

[cassian only nods when jim arrives and says thanks, but he looks as ready to go as they are.] We did agree to wait.

[he pulls out a map to gesture at the general space they were planning to go towards.] We were going over here, just a little west of the river. There were not very many details about what is there, but last time we were close, it looked like there could be some sort of building.

Cassian's hoping to make it his summer home, [ jyn offers blithely. it was his chosen destination, not hers, so she thinks she has to right to tease him about it. she wanted to explore the plants more, cassian out logic'd her and thus: west they go. into the unknown regions, just like home. ]

[ Jim nods as he takes a peek into the map. Jyn's offhanded remark gets a crooked smirk and a faint chuckle out of him, and he lifts a shoulder, tipping his head. ] Well, to each their own.

[ He nods towards the path as they step through the doorways and out beyond the wall. ] I'm just tagging along, so please. Lead the way.

[for the last time jyn, there could still be plants there! he just rolls his eyes and ignores her completely as he steps out; he's already kind of leading even if they're all walking at the same pace. he just quietly hopes he won't have to slow or stop, but his back has been mostly okay lately.]

I'm hoping there will be something worth bringing back.

It may be a few hours walk. Two, three. Four if we are unlucky.

We're always unlucky. [ it's not necessary to point out as she's shifting the way her pack rests against her shoulders, but it's better not to imagine they're only going to be walking a while.

it's no worse than jedha, at least it's not cold here, though jyn still -- out of habit maybe -- winds the scarf wrapped around one of the backpack straps around her neck, lifting it to cover her hair. it'll protect her pale skin from the dappled sunlight. ]

Do you do a lot of walking? [ to kirk. maybe they have speeders where he is from, maybe he owned one. ]

Oh, good. You're an optimist, I see. [ His tone is sarcastic but playful. Jim's all too familiar with pessimists or 'worst case scenario' sort of people, so this doesn't faze him much.

To her question, he nods. ] A fair share. It depends on the away missions, what sorts of planets we visit, and the like. Sometimes we end up traveling for weeks or months without a stop in sight, and we're basically trapped on the ship for all that while, but I try to keep active anyway.

But here— I do a whole lot of walking, in the Quarantine. Almost every day.

[he gives her bad shoulder a suspicious look, but says nothing. he refuses to be called out for his own lingering injuries.]

[jim is definitely hanging out with a couple of very pessimistic people who sometimes flirt with the idea of hope though.]

Your ships can sustain themselves for months without stopping at all? [even the destroyers needed to land for maintenance when they weren't landing to terrorize. maybe not as often, but it was hard to think about them not coming down on a random planet every few weeks at the least. he's now imagining jim's ship being massive on that scale.]

[ they're dead, jim. jyn gets to be as much a pessimist as she wants. ]

The Enterprise is a lot bigger than Rogue One. [ "considerably larger", but because now they're talking about jim's ship and that was actually an enjoyable conversation and because cassian doesn't count as a witness so no one will believe jim if he says anything, jyn teases. ] Love of his life, she is.

[ Luckily for Jim, he's more than used to handling pessimists, and he's not so easily brought down. He's too confident to not be optimistic, even when faced with the worst of odds.

Jim chuckles at Jyn's quip, not knowing her enough to truly appreciate how rare it is for her to tease. It's a nice change from her usually somber demeanor, though. ] Well, wouldn't go that far, but... close enough. And yes, most of the fleet's starships can travel for months on end without stopping. It's not ideal, obviously, but it's easily doable.

[he nearly does a double take when jyn teases jim, then catches himself but only because there's a third party. it doesn't make it any less weird though!] Rogue One was tiny. Most ships would be bigger than it.

And most of the ships back home with high sustainability aren't exactly what we would call friendly explorers like yourself and your Enterprise. [deadly explorers?? land on a planet and drain the resources explorers??]

[ yeah, that's right, buddies. jyn is capable of humor. you saw it here first, no one will ever believe you. she raises her eyebrows at cassian like SAY SOMETHING I DARE YOU ]

They're called Star Destroyers for a reason, hard emphasis on destroyer.

[ Jim doesn't need people to believe him, he'll just appreciate it for what it means. Jyn struck him as someone very closed off from the beginning, so any sign that she's getting friendlier around him is a very good thing. ]

I... alright, well, I can assure you Starfleet has absolutely no intention or means to actually destroy any stars out there. [ Let's just not talk about Ambassador Spock and his not-so-neat trick with the red matter. ] Our fleet is made up almost entirely of exploration vessels. They are armed and capable of being in battle, granted, but it's mainly for defense purposes. More of a... 'attack them if they attack us first' kind of thing.

[ And even then, Jim personally would rather only retaliate if there really was no other alternative. ]

[there is absolutely nothing imperial about jim. he's too openly good. cassian has met a lot of imperials, and no one with a captain ranking got it by being friendly and adventurous. he can believe starfleet is more exploratory than invasive a navy, even if the concept sounds utterly fake to him.]

And who would attack such an inoffensive fleet? [even with a peaceful mantra, cassian knows the galaxy is full of all kinds of people. maybe someone really hates starfleet. maybe there's pirates. there are a lot of choices! he just wants to know more. but at least this time it's for curiosity's sake and not a compulsion.]

[ there's a faint scoff from jyn, not derisive enough to derail the conversation, just enough to note that there's loads of people that would attack an exploratory fleet. she knows cassian knows that so she doesn't feel the need to point it out, especially as she's the same kind of curious. ]

The universe isn't all perfect that way. We strive for peace and aim to make friends along the way, but not everyone out there feels the same way. Some species are still hellbent on fighting their wars, and some are just naturally suspicious. Understanding makes friends out of very different people, but not everyone's willing do do that, sadly.

[ Still, Jim thinks it's worth it, even if they're successful only a handful of times. It's still progress, even if they leave a planet without having made a solid or lasting connection with the people inhabiting it. ]

[it makes sense logistically but it doesn't actually give cassian a direct answer as to what sort of people. he can fill in the blanks of course, there are plenty of parallels in his own galaxy.]

Do you try again, or leave them to their own devices? One would hope you do not get yourself involved in their wars either, for a peaceful operation.

[ jyn has a feeling that they might try again. somehow kirk manages to get around her cactus exterior, after all. ]

They might have no choice. Plenty of people get pulled into wars they don't wish to fight.

Well, you know what they say. If at first you don't succeed... [ Keep being an annoying little shit until people have no other choice but to give in. ]

But yes, we do try to stay away from other people's conflicts. It's one of our many orders, directives and regulations that strictly define what we can or can't do, or the degree to which we are allowed to get involved in specific situations. [ Not that Jim is that stellar at following orders. /COUGHprimedirectivewhatCOUGH ]

[there's a bit of a pause.]

And how often do you break that rule?

[or any rule. every single impression he's gotten of jim leads him to believe it's at least once a month that some rule is broken because jim is following his heart or whatever optimistic garbage people like him bleed out.]

[as though he didn't join a death mission on a surge of hope but whATEVER]

I am sure there are some conflicts you find impossible to leave be.

Perhaps a galaxy ruled by an Empire that imposes it's "peace" through tyranny?

[ just as casual example. she doesn't really need to ask if kirk would be on the rebellion's side -- she has no doubts that kirk would want to personally punch the emperor in the face. ]

Officially? Almost never. Like, maybe once, possibly. [ Jim offers a neutral smile at Cassian's question, then looks over at Jyn. ]

That's no peace. It's just an excuse for megalomaniacs to do whatever they want.

[ That is, until someone stands up and says they've had enough. If all the people in a world, in a solar system or in a galaxy oppose something like that, then it's only a matter of time before such an Empire meets its own end. Jim genuinely believes that, anyway. ]
