[closed] Mission: Don't Wake the Deity
who: Akihiko Sanada, Nico di Angelo, Edward Elric, Alphonse Elric, Rin, Keith, Lyle Dylandy, Khisanth (Onyx), Jason Todd, Ava Orlova, Morgana, Takashi Shirogane, Yuffie Kisaragi, Chloe Decker, Lucifer Morningstar, Thor Odinson, Link
what: Mission: Don't Wake the Deity
when: Friday, July 28th - after the scouting party has returned and shared their information
where: The Abandoned City and surrounding woods
warnings: Violence, probable monster attacks, mind control/people being compelled, etc. Will add more warnings as needed.
[Taken from the June TDM, with some additions:]
Whether you've just arrived in the city or you've been here a while, and you have a sensitivity to the spiritual, magical, multidimensional, or anything else outside the realm of everyday normal, you've probably noticed a distinct uptick in weird feelings, strange nightmares, or daymares - hallucinations of scary things that are lurking just behind you.
You're not the only one who's noticed it.
There are rumors going around that the psychological and spiritual disturbances are due to the emergence or re-emergence of a deity. Some people say that it's something new that's come through the portal with the sharp increase in new arrivals recently, and others say it's simply an ancient spiritual presence or some ancient incorporeal monster that's been somehow awakened. Gramarye, the top-tier magic research center in Riverview Quarantine, has been studying anyone who's felt this presence, and have recently confirmed that whatever it is, it's being fed by all the extra energies and prayers and thoughts as the city's population increases. The one thing everyone agrees on is that, if the expanding community is feeding the entity, then the entity has got to go!
A scouting party recently travelled into the Abandoned City and forests outside the walls to search for leads or any other evidence of a way to solve the problem. After a day of searching, the team stumbled upon an abandoned temple. While it didn't seem like much, its exterior run-down and wood rotting amongst the centuries' old mulch and muck, it felt... unsettling. Alive, almost. One member of the party could feel a powerful presence emanating from it; realizing they were out of their depth, the team returned to the Quarantine to relay the information and obtain reinforcements.
Teams are now being assembled across the city to travel into the Abandoned City or the forests outside the walls and find this temple once more. The mission might be dangerous, though - there are the usual dangers of venturing out into the wilds, but this time, characters may also face booby traps, spectral or physical guardians, and if the entity itself gets awoken? Someone may have to kill it.
[So this log will be set up in 'stages'. The first few headers will be closed to each of the teams for initial travel meetings, camping, monster fights, etc. Feel free to post your own top-levels underneath and tag out, mingle, whatever you'd like. Headers for further 'stages' of the mission (such as once all the teams meet up at the temple/deity hideout) will also be posted so that teams can intermingle/have more CR.
Since there are so many people involved, consider this one big mingle thread in the vein of the TDMs. Here's a link to the google doc for those interested as well.]

He might look at Brennan, but he doesn't really offer a greeting - not that he really offered much of one to anyone else on their arrival, either. Ed just wasn't really like that. The plus side to Al not being here was that he wouldn't berate him for it, but he could still hear his brother's disappointment even without his presence.
A smirk at the introduction is offered, though - trying not to look too amused as he regarded Nico curiously. "Just a little, huh?" He wouldn't be surprised to find Nico raising more than one before all of this is over.

However, when the fecal matter hit the air circulation device, Keith pushed himself to get over any effects from Nico's aura he might be feeling to step up and help. His own two blades appeared in a flash of purple and red light respectively, and he crouched into a fight stance, gritting his teeth and ignoring the warnings to stay back.
"You don't have to do this alone," he snapped back.

"Well, I will give you points for style," Rin drawls. He slides a dagger--long, wickedly curved, its blade glinting in the low afternoon light--from the depthless sleeve of his tunic. He saunters up beside Nico, one eye on the approaching beast, the other on that most unusual sword.
"Points for that thing, too," he says. He can feel the magic roiling off of it, as fierce as a storm. But his people were made to withstand such magic; the aura runs over him like a prickle down his spine. He shivers, but he is not repelled. "Can't wait to see you swing it."

He quickly caught up with the nonchalance in the kid closest the.. skeleton? His own feelings quickly went from alarm to intrigue.
"Hi, Brennen." He spoke as he walked over, glancing over their skeletal new party member with interest before turning his attention to Nico with an amused smile, raising a hand in greeting. "That's a handy trick. Is he real?" A pause at the awkwardness of the wording of his own question. "Like. An actual skeleton and not a spirit."

They had decided to split up for this, especially after a few other people had offered their own interest in joining in once the scouting party had returned with their findings. Jay and Morgana had gone off, and now that Chloe was on board Ed had suggested Al and her go with Yuffie and Link.
Although he hadn't expected anyone to follow his suggestions as the rule, he had made a few in regards to how the groups should form - based on their skillsets. Adding Shiro in with Jay and Morgana, and bringing Lyle (who was probably the least prepared for all of this) with his group.
Considering he didn't live with anyone in his group, he'd made arrangements to meet them by the wall protecting the city. After the scouting party they knew it would be a bit of a trek, but Ed didn't carry much with him as he waited for the others - sure to be out and ready early after making sure that everyone else on his floor was set for this.
He offers a wave when he sees someone approaching, the arm band that labels him a member of the Guard clearly visible so they won't have any issue getting through the wall without an escort to get to work.
ii. camping:
During the scouting party, the first day not turning anything up had been frustrating. It meant they had to stay out longer and keep looking, and there had been so many unknown variables that the length of time they were gone would be hard to pin down.
This time though, Ed had been prepared for this trip, figured about how long it would take - maybe even shorter since they knew where they were going - so he could be found at any point while they're making camp, helping to set up or relaxing to settle in for the evening. If anyone is up and about during the night, they might notice he's not getting the most relaxed sleep - feel free to wake him from a nightmare or find him already awake milling about the campsite. Alternately, in the morning before they head out, packing things up or over breakfast.
Chances are if he's not doing anything he's scanning the network, but feel free to interrupt.
iii. monster fighting:
Ed was used to all sorts of things, from chimeras and homunculi at home to the monsters found in Purg. The ones here so far had been no big deal, nothing really monumental to even make him so much as lift an eyebrow - but that didn't stop them from being weird to deal with. Just like the monster crabs of Purg, sometimes things just came forward and there wasn't much anyone could do about it but fight back.
The closer they got to the temple the weirder, and stronger, these things became. Not that it was going to dissuade Ed, clapping his hands together and forming the blade on his automail without a thought to who might be around and paying attention to that strange detail. People were finding out left and right already, he wasn't about to hide it in an actual battle.

Gaze catching on the wave and recognizing the armband, he gave his own polite wave in return, unable to quite keep the excitement out of his step as he hastened over. Akihiko looked ready for a camping trip, if not so much an actual fight- he wore his regular sweatervest and button down, with a pack of essentials.
"Hey there! Have you seen anyone come through going after the deity?" Maybe a little to the point, but his tone is light. He's still not quite sure how the Perimeter Guard works, but he figures asking one is a good starting point. "I'm new around here, but I'd like to help if I can." Probably.

"Fancy trick!" he calls from somewhere above Ed, where he's currently crouched in the high, obfuscating branches of a tree. He's been following the group this way, jumping from tree to tree, doing extremely sweet flips from branch to branch. It's good exercise, and it keeps him above the fray--which, at this point, he has little interest in entering.
"I hear something quite large approaching," he adds, his own position still masked by the canopy cover. "Hope you're good with that thing."

After having fallen in with a group that had been kind enough to let him join their pre-organized efforts, Akihiko was excited to travel alongside them to find the mysterious temple the scouts had put their efforts into finding. He'd likely pester for as much information as could be given, and was open to anyone who might want to strike up conversation on their as of yet peaceful journey out.
When it was time to make camp, he helped in any way he could to set up the site, keen to see if he could offer any of his new acquaintances aid. He himself had only a sleeping bag, but truth be told he wasn't ready to sleep just yet; Akihiko could likely be found perched at the edge of the campsite with his phone. He was both used to staying up through the Dark Hour, and unused to feeling the presence of nonhuman entities outside of the single hour in the dead of night. It set him a bit on edge, so he kept an idle watch alongside the skeletal guard that Nico had pulled up. Which honestly? Quite cool that it could be summoned and then left to its own devices.
iii. monster fighting;; (CW: suicide fakeout)
With the first few encounters, he managed to keep to the sidelines or purely to close combat. He'd promised his healing skills and didn't want to use up too much of his stamina on offense if it was going to be needed often. It was good to be forced to get a size up of their opponents before getting flashy anyhow, since he was used to mostly shadowy entities.
When several set upon them from either side though, after a quick scan of what was ahead, he readied himself. Without hesitating, he reached under his vest and drew his evoker, flipped the muzzle between his eyes and pulled the trigger. Through his skull and out the back, a plume of what appeared to be shattered glass blew out and formed together into a hulking figure behind him. Akihiko put away the pistol with a little grin to himself; it had been some time since he'd been able to fight alongside Polydeuces. For anyone he may have talked to on the hike, he likely would have warned about the cameo appearance of the spirit, but likely did not think to warn of how exactly it was summoned.
"Clear the left for a second!" Directly after, he murmured a word to himself, the warning just before electricy gathered around the Persona before channeling through two of the monsters, both stumbling with the shock for a moment and giving an opening for someone to jump in.
iii. wildcard
(Since Akihiko's the add-on in this group, I figured it would make less sense for him to have his own prompt for people to gather. Hit me with anything that strikes your fancy though, and any introduction threads through the journey there/after everyone got together are great too! Will match posting style!! c: )

And he still doesn't.
"I thought my people had a flair for the dramatic."
He declines to jump in. Yet.

Keith was intrigued. He'd been picking up on strange energy since arriving, and it was starting to really get him on edge. Like when he had sensed the Blue Lion, he felt this need to go out and find out what the heck was going on. However, unlike when he had sensed the Blue Lion, this was completely unfamiliar territory to him, and completely unfamiliar native wildlife. Going alone was definitely not the way to handle this. So, he'd joined up with one of the groups heading out.
He and Shiro had agreed to be separated for this. It wasn't Keith's ideal way to go, but their skills were very similar to one another, even their fighting style, so they both felt it would strategically be best to split up for the sake of keeping balanced groups. Keith would have preferred to stay close to Shiro, but it wasn't something terribly foreign to him, and he was able to push his anxiety over the idea off to the side for now.
He was dressed in his Paladin armor for the trip, and seemingly unarmed, but, if asked, he would produce his red and white bayard from the particle storage by hovering his hand for a moment near his thigh to make the handle appear in his hand, the two lights just below his hip blinking in sequence just before it appeared, and then expanding it into blade form, and he would pull out a dagger with an odd, glowing symbol on the hilt that expanded into a sword.
2 - camping
Keith wasn't very social, and spent a lot of each night near the perimeter of their campsites, keeping watch for monsters and whatnot. However, he would talk if approached by someone. He just wasn't usually someone who would go out of their way to talk to someone else.
3 - monsters? monsters...
So, yeah. Those two blades? Keith was actually pretty good at wielding both at the same time. He incorporated the shield into his fighting, too, if he needed to against monsters that threw things or spit things or even breathed fire, if any of those were out there. And while he wasn't perfect, he was still good. The purple sword was also really good for throwing, and Keith made liberal use of that as a distraction technique or distance attack, always making sure to retrieve it again after the fight was done.
He was confident, too, which could be his downfall, as was his temper if things got out of his control. He could probably use some back up.

It was pretty strange, only knowing a few people in this group. But Lyle was prepared, at least as much as possibly could be. He had supplies needed, especially for his weapon of choice: long range rifle and a hand gun along with the supplies for them.
Shhh... you don't really need where he borrowed those from.
But as they hunkered down for the night, Lyle found a spot where he could pull out the rifle and make sure it was cleaned and good working condition. Considering he relies on fire arms, best to make sure there's not going to be any problems.
ii. Monster fight
When the monsters began to make their appearance, Lyle moved to the side to let those with more of a physical fighting skill through. He did however having his long range rifle out, looking further towards the temple and taking aim further off into the distance.
That was until he heard a crashing sound behind him. The problem with sniping... a little hard to keep watching everything.
"Shit!"
Lyle grabbed for his hand gun and whipped around right as one of the creatures came crashing out now in front of him. Could he get that shot off? He'll certainly try.
ii.
Ed had a lot to do in this group, keeping an eye on Nico to make sure no one gave him any trouble and he wasn't pushing himself too hard, keeping an eye on the new people in case they were dangerous, keeping an eye on Lyle to make sure he wasn't in danger - and of course, something was bound to bend in all of that juggling.
He had just sliced through one of the monsters coming at him, but when Ed heard the crash he turned to face the source of the noise and realized just how close that thing was to the one here with the least hand-to-hand experience. There was no sniping from that distance, that's for sure.
Whether Lyle fires the gun, or hits the thing when he does, Ed doesn't pay attention. Clapping his hands together and slamming them to the ground where he crouched nearby and watching the spikes of earth shoot up out of nowhere - stabbing through it from all angles. He panted as he stood again, wiping some dirt off his face with the back of a gloved hand. "You all right?"

TEAM TWO

Much like when the first team went out to scout Jason had prepared for everything he thought might happen. His messenger bag was loaded down with everything he thought he might need short of a change of clothes. His jacket was zipped up to hide the bat symbol on his chest, because one never knew when they might need a handy taser but his secret identity was important to him here.
He had stepped up as if he was the leader of the group he had been paired with, since he had gone with the first group. Beyond mostly remembering the way, he could also feel something off the closer they got.
Once he saw their destination in the distance he lifted a hand in the air and whistled to get the other's attention. "That would be our destination, We wont make that by nightfall. We should set up camp for tonight." He hadn't spoke much on the way out, but now that the prize was in sight he felt a little more relaxed.
Camping
The night set in pretty quick, and Jason had made a point to sit off by himself, leaning against a tree reading a book for as long as his little clip on light lasted. he could have gone over to the fire but by the time the light died he slipped the book back in his bag and pushed himself up, leaving the bag by the tree.
He walked to circle the perimeter of the camp. Not wanting to overlook anything that could leave the team in danger. The guns rested at his sides in the holsters ready to go if danger presented itself. But the night seemed to be going quietly. Jason didn't know which bothered him more, the quiet or the idea that whatever that force he could feel hadn't made itself known yet.
He had opted not to try and sleep that night, there was to much on his mind for it. So, when the sun was just starting to rise he walked from Camp just fair enough to watch the sun start to peak out over the clouds, taking his phone out he finally powered it on to check his messages. A cigarette lit up as he smoked away from the others, allowing himself a few moments ponder sending a message before deciding against it. Crushing out the cigarette and shutting off the phone again he turned to head back to camp.
Monster Fighting (CW; minor self harm)
The closer they got to the temple the more the random monsters seemed to appear. He had expected something like this, and despite lacking sleep he was awake and alert, both guns gripped in his hands shots fired into monsters that came into his vicinity. He had to be mindful of ammunition. He had expected trouble but not a wave of monsters.
"Fuck it!" he screamed after getting hit in the jaw and knocked off his feet by one of the monsters. Pushing himself up he shoved the guns in their holsters and jumped back, flipping himself over to put some distance from his attacker before he knelled again pushing his sleeves up then yanked the all-blades from his boots turning both copper blades to slash the top of his arms to power the blades that seem to double in size. Twisting them in his hands against as if the cuts didn't hurt.
"Come on then, let's play." He called out running back at the monster

After hearing the information about this temple, Shiro had been intrigued. He still felt that it would have some answers they needed to figure out this place so he had of course agreed to come along. He had thought on it for some time, but Shiro thought it would be better if he and Keith were on separate teams because after training together so many times, they had a similar style. It was better to not have them both on the same team.
He had packed light, only what he needed but he did have his paladin armor other than that he seemed to be unarmed.
He walked along with the group, keeping an eye out for anything that might be coming their way. He carried himself like he knew what was going on whether he did or not.
ii. Camping
Shiro already had trouble sleeping on a normal basis so he knew he wasn't going to get much sleep tonight. He had camped out by the fire, sitting quietly and listening for any sounds of potentially dangerous creatures around them. It wasn't exactly the most exciting job, but Shiro wanted to do it.
iii. Monster fight
Fighting was something that Shiro was used to and when the monsters made their appearance, Shiro was ready. When something got close enough to him, his right hand activated, glowing purple, and he slashed at the creatures as though his hand were a sword, cutting through anything that was in front of him.
TEAM THREE
no subject
The sun has barely crested the horizon when she awakens that morning. She's far too keyed up to have gotten much sleep the night before; there's still that hum underneath her skin, an ebbing kind of anxiety in her blood that she isn't quite sure what to make of. It's like the air has changed since the rise of... whatever this thing is. Deity, being, creature. It's not something she's used to. Knowing that not only is all of this even possible — magic, monsters, and the like — but that she can be affected by it is daunting. Like something's tied a string to her and is insistently pulling at the other end. Trying to pull her out.
She sighs and adjusts the strap of her bag on her shoulder as she waits by the wall, waiting for her team to arrive. She's certainly not going alone, after all. Not when she's so unfamiliar with the terrain. She sees someone coming soon enough, though, and nods towards them in greeting.
"I don't suppose you've got a lot of experience with things like this, do you?"
ii. camping shenanigans
Her dreams are tangled up and frenetic, flashes of images falling behind her eyelids as she sleeps that night. She's been seeing things like this a lot recently; sometimes that temple, sometimes not. Tonight, she sees people standing outside of it, bodies held tight like bowstrings as they stared forward.
To whoever may be near her, they'd find her tossing and turning in her sleep, a cold sweat breaking out across her brow before she suddenly shoots up. Chloe's chest rises and falls with each of her panting breaths, a shaky hand rising to tug the messy strands of blonde hair out of her face.
iii. monster fighting
When Cisco told her about being prepared for mutant crocodiles, she didn't actually think he'd been literal about it. But there they were, facing a small horde in one of the valleys that'd stretched out and broken off from the woods. They hadn't seemed to quite catch sight or sense of them yet, though she could see some of them lifting their giant maws and sniffing at the air curiously, beady little eyes blinking in attention. Her hand rested against her gun out of habit, ready to pull it out in case they posed an even larger threat.
They moved over each other restlessly, as if agitated. She wondered if that was their natural state of being or if they'd been affected somehow, like the rest of the Quarantine. If this energy or presence had made them more volatile than usual. They'd have to do something, but moving too suddenly may alert the things to their presence.
"Any ideas?" she whispers.

"Missions start!" Yuffie's voice was very loud considering how early it was. "Who's ready to take names and kick butt?"
She was bright eyed, bushy tailed and ready to go. She was dressed in her usual ninja garb though there was now a long metal piece that ran from her left shoulder down to her wrist, conforming to the rough shape of her arm. Her hip held a new black bag that she'd tossed some snacks into while a vast collection of blades were strapped to a belt that hung loosely around her waist.
On her back was something that looked like a sword in a cloth sheath with a ring in the place of a pommel. To complete her attire was a black headband that circled her forehead.
"The Great Ninja Yuffie is here!" She was also bored since she'd been up for the last two hours waiting to go.
camping shenanigans/look out (~ ̄³ ̄)~
Yuffie knew that they'd have to eventually stop and set up camp for the night but she wasn't looking forward to it. Being in the woods made her think back to her journey with Cloud and the others. She missed them and it was annoying.
With everyone sitting around the campfire, Yuffie rose to make an announcement. "I'm taking first watch. Someone come and get me when its time to switch." She didn't care who took second watch and sauntered off towards the perimeter of their campsite before anyone could stop her. It took two passes around the campsite for Yuffie to find a tree that afforded her a view of the whole area.
She climbed it effortlessly, landing quietly on a sturdy middle branch. Her eyes scanned the horizon as she settled back against the trunk of the tree. Yuffie didn't keep normal sleeping hours, usually grabbing four hour stretches of rest at a time. If she slept for too long she'd wake to nightmares and she wasn't particularly interested in doing that with a group of people that she barely knew.
Yuffie pulled a chocolate bar from her snack pack and began to munch on it as she waited for something interesting to happen.
monster fighting(ノ・ェ・)ノ
This was what Yuffie had been waiting for. Yes, she was supposed to heal or whatever but she was a fighter and she was eager to get back to doing what she knew best. Without waiting for the others, she went running into a small clearing where a weird looking elk thing was grazing.
"Prepare yourself!" Yuffie used the monsters face as a springboard, bounding over it and into an attack position. The creature stumbled, blinked and then took off into the woods. "Yeah! You better run!"
She was too distracted by her own shouting to notice that it wasn't her that the creature had been running from. The ground behind Yuffie rose and fell as if it was breathing. Something was coming.

"I might pass out from this, so someone will need to get the baggie of ambrosia from my bag, in case I do. It'll look like lemon squares, really. But don't touch or eat any of it because it'll burn through your bodies," he tells the groups around him. He hopes he won't pass out, but there's never any telling with things like this. His powers are strong, but they occasionally come with a price, and that price is exhaustion. And with something as powerful as a god, he might wear himself out.
But there's no time to think about that. People are suffering because of this thing and Nico wants to make sure that stops. He's familiar with gods, probably more so than anyone else here, and he wants to make sure that people are safe from whatever lies within the temple.
Taking another deep breath, he nods, more to himself than anyone else, and then looks around again.
"Everyone ready?"

He was glad that in the end so many people came, that meant there were enough of them with enough varied skills to back each other up - and Nico would need it the most. As much as he shouldn't have been taking on the fighting to begin with, to preserve his energy, he was doing most of the work here, at least from their group. Ed had no idea what some of the others were capable of, but he had sort of hoped someone else might be able to step up and help out with the number of people they'd collected for this.
A moment was spent glancing around the group, new and familiar, but this wasn't on him. He might have made arrangements to find this temple and encouraged people to come along - or welcomed their interest after the fact - but all he'd done was organize it. That meant now all he could do was hope for the best, and trust that Nico knew what he was doing... and wasn't in over his head.
While everything is still quiet and peaceful Ed hung back, arms crossed over his chest as he waited to see what the next step was, when he might be needed. If something came at them to attack he'd be quick to jump to the offensive - the glove covering his automail was already gone from a previous fight on the way to the temple, so anyone that wasn't aware before might notice it now.
There had been talk about the deity controlling people to protect and guard the temple, but Ed didn't see anything that looked like a guard and he certainly didn't think it was going to bother to try to take over any of them. For now, all he could do was keep a look out.
