who: Akihiko Sanada, Nico di Angelo, Edward Elric, Alphonse Elric, Rin, Keith, Lyle Dylandy, Khisanth (Onyx), Jason Todd, Ava Orlova, Morgana, Takashi Shirogane, Yuffie Kisaragi, Chloe Decker, Lucifer Morningstar, Thor Odinson, Link
what: Mission: Don't Wake the Deity
when: Friday, July 28th - after the scouting party has returned and shared their information
where: The Abandoned City and surrounding woods
warnings: Violence, probable monster attacks, mind control/people being compelled, etc. Will add more warnings as needed.

[Taken from the June TDM, with some additions:]

Whether you've just arrived in the city or you've been here a while, and you have a sensitivity to the spiritual, magical, multidimensional, or anything else outside the realm of everyday normal, you've probably noticed a distinct uptick in weird feelings, strange nightmares, or daymares - hallucinations of scary things that are lurking just behind you.

You're not the only one who's noticed it.

There are rumors going around that the psychological and spiritual disturbances are due to the emergence or re-emergence of a deity. Some people say that it's something new that's come through the portal with the sharp increase in new arrivals recently, and others say it's simply an ancient spiritual presence or some ancient incorporeal monster that's been somehow awakened. Gramarye, the top-tier magic research center in Riverview Quarantine, has been studying anyone who's felt this presence, and have recently confirmed that whatever it is, it's being fed by all the extra energies and prayers and thoughts as the city's population increases. The one thing everyone agrees on is that, if the expanding community is feeding the entity, then the entity has got to go!

A scouting party recently travelled into the Abandoned City and forests outside the walls to search for leads or any other evidence of a way to solve the problem. After a day of searching, the team stumbled upon an abandoned temple. While it didn't seem like much, its exterior run-down and wood rotting amongst the centuries' old mulch and muck, it felt... unsettling. Alive, almost. One member of the party could feel a powerful presence emanating from it; realizing they were out of their depth, the team returned to the Quarantine to relay the information and obtain reinforcements.

Teams are now being assembled across the city to travel into the Abandoned City or the forests outside the walls and find this temple once more. The mission might be dangerous, though - there are the usual dangers of venturing out into the wilds, but this time, characters may also face booby traps, spectral or physical guardians, and if the entity itself gets awoken? Someone may have to kill it.

[So this log will be set up in 'stages'. The first few headers will be closed to each of the teams for initial travel meetings, camping, monster fights, etc. Feel free to post your own top-levels underneath and tag out, mingle, whatever you'd like. Headers for further 'stages' of the mission (such as once all the teams meet up at the temple/deity hideout) will also be posted so that teams can intermingle/have more CR.

Since there are so many people involved, consider this one big mingle thread in the vein of the TDMs. Here's a link to the google doc for those interested as well.]

Link approached Chloe decked out in his Sheikah armor and carrying a sword, shield, and bow on his back. A quiver full of arrows hung down below them, and his Sheikah Slate hung on his hip. He pulled his mask down to speak a little easier. Besides, it was a bit hot and he didn't need to cover up his face until they left. He gave her a wave and an excited smile.

"I don't know much about sleeping gods, but I've been scouting before." Scouting, killing monsters, exploring places people wouldn't normally dare to set foot. This was just a normal Tuesday for Link. "Are you nervous?"

01: arrival

The first thing Nico does when he arrives at the designated meeting point is assess the other people on is team. Some, he doesn't know. Others, he's already familiar with. After the scouting mission, it had become clear that the best solution was finding a way to put the god back to sleep. It would be best for Quarantine and the people living there. But how exactly one does that, he wasn't sure. Nico's had experience putting other people to sleep, demigods like him. But when it comes to an actual god... He wonders if it's even possible.

At the least, they'll be able to figure out a solution of some sort, he hopes. But just to ensure they're all properly prepared, Nico kneels down and places a hand on the ground. His eyes close for a few seconds and under his breath, he murmurs a few words in Ancient Greek. The earth trembles under his toes and soon enough, something begins crawling to the surface. It's a skeletal figure in what appears to be an old army uniform of some kind. Figuring he's probably frightened a few people, he glances around and shrugs.

"Just a little extra backup, if we need it. Say hello to Brennen. He'll be helping us today."

02: camping

When they finally stop for the night, Nico is the first to throw himself down on the ground. Being used to sleeping in weird places and weird positions, he doesn't even bother pulling out anything to sleep on. Instead, he unfastens his sword from his belt and sets it nearby before curling up and using his bag as a pillow. He waits as the campfire is built and then glances around. They're a strange crew, but at least he knows Ed. He feels a little comfortable with him there because at least he knows someone.

But Nico is pretty tired. He's been extending his senses a lot for both the scouting mission and now, meaning he's been using quite a bit of his powers. So in a matter of minutes, he's asleep, snoozing away because it's the best way for him to restore energy. Good luck waking him if something happens. It might take a bit. At least Brennen, his skeletal servant, makes for a good guard who doesn't sleep.

03: monster attack

When the first monster attacks as they make it closer to the temple, Nico is ready for it. His sword is unsheathed and almost immediately, a wave of cold and fear seems to emanate from it and him. He adopts a fighting position and glances behind him, waving off whoever might be close and thus affected by his fear aura.

"Stay back!" he says, giving his sword a twirl. "I've got this."

But if someone is brave enough to withstand his aura, feel free to join him in the melee.

i. preparing to leave:

They had decided to split up for this, especially after a few other people had offered their own interest in joining in once the scouting party had returned with their findings. Jay and Morgana had gone off, and now that Chloe was on board Ed had suggested Al and her go with Yuffie and Link.

Although he hadn't expected anyone to follow his suggestions as the rule, he had made a few in regards to how the groups should form - based on their skillsets. Adding Shiro in with Jay and Morgana, and bringing Lyle (who was probably the least prepared for all of this) with his group.

Considering he didn't live with anyone in his group, he'd made arrangements to meet them by the wall protecting the city. After the scouting party they knew it would be a bit of a trek, but Ed didn't carry much with him as he waited for the others - sure to be out and ready early after making sure that everyone else on his floor was set for this.

He offers a wave when he sees someone approaching, the arm band that labels him a member of the Guard clearly visible so they won't have any issue getting through the wall without an escort to get to work.

ii. camping:

During the scouting party, the first day not turning anything up had been frustrating. It meant they had to stay out longer and keep looking, and there had been so many unknown variables that the length of time they were gone would be hard to pin down.

This time though, Ed had been prepared for this trip, figured about how long it would take - maybe even shorter since they knew where they were going - so he could be found at any point while they're making camp, helping to set up or relaxing to settle in for the evening. If anyone is up and about during the night, they might notice he's not getting the most relaxed sleep - feel free to wake him from a nightmare or find him already awake milling about the campsite. Alternately, in the morning before they head out, packing things up or over breakfast.

Chances are if he's not doing anything he's scanning the network, but feel free to interrupt.

iii. monster fighting:

Ed was used to all sorts of things, from chimeras and homunculi at home to the monsters found in Purg. The ones here so far had been no big deal, nothing really monumental to even make him so much as lift an eyebrow - but that didn't stop them from being weird to deal with. Just like the monster crabs of Purg, sometimes things just came forward and there wasn't much anyone could do about it but fight back.

The closer they got to the temple the weirder, and stronger, these things became. Not that it was going to dissuade Ed, clapping his hands together and forming the blade on his automail without a thought to who might be around and paying attention to that strange detail. People were finding out left and right already, he wasn't about to hide it in an actual battle.

Yuffie was crouched on the ground next to Chloe eyeing the creatures curiously. She was used to monsters and had no reservations about going through the hoard. Her fingers curled around a metal ring that was protruding from her back, pulling a thin glittering steel blade from its dark holster. With a flick of her wrist the blade snapped open, locking into a large shuriken the size of Yuffie's torso.

It was a little ridiculous.

"Yeah. You cover me with that gun. If you hit me I'll be pissed but I'll live so just keep shooting." Dark purple eyes looked over at Chloe looking uncharacteristically serious. Yuffie was a goofball at the best of times but there were too many creatures for her to joke now. "I'm going to split them in half. Let the others deal with the ones that aren't in front of us."

Her second hand curled into a fist where her ice materia was beginning to charge. Yuffie was an all or nothing kind of person which usually got her in trouble. At least this time she'd have back up.

Ed is, gradually, more and more aware of Nico's traits. His little stunt opening up the ground and summoning help for this expedition certainly doesn't surprise him at this point, but he is going to inwardly cringe at the lack of warning for the benefit of others. Something he knew Nico wasn't used to, and at least he explained after, even if that might be a bit too little, too late, it was something.

He might look at Brennan, but he doesn't really offer a greeting - not that he really offered much of one to anyone else on their arrival, either. Ed just wasn't really like that. The plus side to Al not being here was that he wouldn't berate him for it, but he could still hear his brother's disappointment even without his presence.

A smirk at the introduction is offered, though - trying not to look too amused as he regarded Nico curiously. "Just a little, huh?" He wouldn't be surprised to find Nico raising more than one before all of this is over.

"Missions start!" Yuffie's voice was very loud considering how early it was. "Who's ready to take names and kick butt?"

She was bright eyed, bushy tailed and ready to go. She was dressed in her usual ninja garb though there was now a long metal piece that ran from her left shoulder down to her wrist, conforming to the rough shape of her arm. Her hip held a new black bag that she'd tossed some snacks into while a vast collection of blades were strapped to a belt that hung loosely around her waist.

On her back was something that looked like a sword in a cloth sheath with a ring in the place of a pommel. To complete her attire was a black headband that circled her forehead.

"The Great Ninja Yuffie is here!" She was also bored since she'd been up for the last two hours waiting to go.

camping shenanigans/look out (~ ̄³ ̄)~

Yuffie knew that they'd have to eventually stop and set up camp for the night but she wasn't looking forward to it. Being in the woods made her think back to her journey with Cloud and the others. She missed them and it was annoying.

With everyone sitting around the campfire, Yuffie rose to make an announcement. "I'm taking first watch. Someone come and get me when its time to switch." She didn't care who took second watch and sauntered off towards the perimeter of their campsite before anyone could stop her. It took two passes around the campsite for Yuffie to find a tree that afforded her a view of the whole area.

She climbed it effortlessly, landing quietly on a sturdy middle branch. Her eyes scanned the horizon as she settled back against the trunk of the tree. Yuffie didn't keep normal sleeping hours, usually grabbing four hour stretches of rest at a time. If she slept for too long she'd wake to nightmares and she wasn't particularly interested in doing that with a group of people that she barely knew.

Yuffie pulled a chocolate bar from her snack pack and began to munch on it as she waited for something interesting to happen.

monster fighting(ノ・ェ・)ノ

This was what Yuffie had been waiting for. Yes, she was supposed to heal or whatever but she was a fighter and she was eager to get back to doing what she knew best. Without waiting for the others, she went running into a small clearing where a weird looking elk thing was grazing.

"Prepare yourself!" Yuffie used the monsters face as a springboard, bounding over it and into an attack position. The creature stumbled, blinked and then took off into the woods. "Yeah! You better run!"

She was too distracted by her own shouting to notice that it wasn't her that the creature had been running from. The ground behind Yuffie rose and fell as if it was breathing. Something was coming.

Akihiko could have probably spent a little more time settling in than he did before going headfirst into volunteering himself. Yet, jumping to action was practically what kept him grounded, so he found himself making his way towards the edge of the city. He'd only seen the mission request recently, so while he'd not necessarily had anyone in mind to join him, he assumed it would be easy enough to pitch his skills to a group if he managed to find one.

Gaze catching on the wave and recognizing the armband, he gave his own polite wave in return, unable to quite keep the excitement out of his step as he hastened over. Akihiko looked ready for a camping trip, if not so much an actual fight- he wore his regular sweatervest and button down, with a pack of essentials.

"Hey there! Have you seen anyone come through going after the deity?" Maybe a little to the point, but his tone is light. He's still not quite sure how the Perimeter Guard works, but he figures asking one is a good starting point. "I'm new around here, but I'd like to help if I can." Probably.

Ed paused when he realized he didn't actually recognize this guy, and he wasn't part of the group he was waiting for. He had considered the downside of his uniform but figured once they were through the wall it wouldn't matter anymore, anyway. This guy looked like he was searching for something, so Ed was ready to dismiss him off to someone actually on duty at the moment - he didn't have time to escort someone who was clearly looking to start a longer exploration out there, even if he wanted to.

At the question though golden eyes scan over the other's appearance, curiously. "Yeah, I'm actually waiting on a group to go through now. I thought you were one of them." He didn't exactly say that he was part of the group rather than just an escort, but they could get to all of that. "You have any useful skills for hunting down a deity?" Honestly, Ed preferred to vet people in advance, but if they stumbled upon like minded individuals along the way wasn't keen on the idea of leaving them alone out there, either.

Yes! Well spotted Akihiko, you're making progress already; now you just have to hope that you can prove your worth to a bunch of strangers who don't know what a persona is. Before he could apologize for the potential inconvenience to the guard, though, he paused at the question. He straightened his posture, unable to help the amused quirk to his lips.

"I do! Well, I guess I've not taken down a deity before, but I'm used to fighting uh. Less than corporeal things. Pol-- I can cast lightning, and heal, some!" He backed out of having to explain Polydeuces, his persona, for now- he could give the disclaimer on the large spirit if he was going to be traveling with these people. And, while was by no means the designated healer back home, but he could help a team get by, for sure. Smiling properly now, he held out a gloved hand. "I'm sorry- I'm Akihiko."
alchemyfreak: (fma74)

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-07-30 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Ed noticed the smirk and couldn't help feeling like that had been a loaded question. He'll take a moment to listen to Akihiko's sales pitch before nodding some, although golden eyes fell to the gloved hand almost suspiciously before responding without a hand shake. "We could use someone that can heal... We only have two healers, and they're heading out with the other groups." Akihiko can downplay his other abilities all he wants, with Nico in their group Ed's priority was healing. The rest may just be a pleasant surprise down the road as far as he's concerned.

After a pause he takes a breath as if preparing himself for something before offering his own gloved hand finally, aware that if they're going to be fighting side by side this guy was bound to see the automail sooner or later. He is watching for a reaction as he takes Akihiko's hand to shake, because although he had certainly gotten a few so far, they were very subtle and not much of what he'd expected from the contact with metal. "Edward Elric, I'm kind of... running this mission."

Akihiko doesn't take the potentially rude gesture too harshly- prickly personalities don't mean someone can't make for an excellent team member, and scratches behind his ear with the hand that had been hovering before letting it fall to his side. With the potential vote of confidence, he perks up a little, shifting his weight back into his heels a bit. "Well I'd love to come along!"

Pleasantly surprised by the offered hand, he gave an enthusiastic handshake, and fortunately or unfortunately for Ed, Akihiko isn't the best at hiding initial reactions. It was only after he'd let go that his brows rose, belatedly registering what he'd felt, but said nothing as he listened to the introduction. Well, he'd managed to run into the best person to speak to. "Oh wow, thank you for doing so! It's nice to meet you." There's only a slight pause as Akihiko manages to not ask possibly the most tactless question to someone he just met. Instead, he sets his bag on the ground at his feet for now since it seems they have at least a little time to wait. "When did you arrive here, then? I was just in the last wave."
alchemyfreak: (FMA_CoS_10)

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-07-30 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ed had never had to deal with so many handshakes in his life, this place was weird like that - but he was getting used to it, and he was getting used to the overall lack of a reaction to his automail. It was almost enough to put his mind at ease... almost. He hadn't forgotten the mention of being able to cast lightning, which was still an interesting concept to him, but he didn't press it, asking off-handed, "You can defend yourself too, I assume." Even if he couldn't a healer might be valuable enough to take on anyway, Ed would just have to be more aware of him if he was going to need help.

There was the reaction he was waiting for, but mercifully no questions were asked, and Akihiko certainly didn't know him well enough to be filled with all sorts of inappropriate concern like his floor mates had been. It was a relief knowing he wouldn't have to field that issue later, for once, even if Akihiko had been tempted to ask about it. "You don't need to thank me, I want to know what's going on out there so I made a plan to check it out. A few friends decided to join, that's all." This was said as if it wasn't the biggest deal in the world that they had, but he definitely could use the help so he appreciated it even if he didn't say as much.

After a pause he offers the faintest smile, probably a sharp contrast to the initial appearance of Ed being strictly down to business. "It's nice to meet you, too. I'm sure we could really use the help." Having a healer in the group would certainly put his mind at ease, even if he didn't know the guy. It wouldn't be the first time he was teamed up with total strangers after all the crap Purg had pulled over the years.

The last question makes him pause, because it was such a change of direction in conversation but he doesn't dwell on it, shrugging a shoulder. "Since June." Not very long, and he's aware of that. "I've been doing this sort of thing for a few years, though." Being stuck in alternate worlds, fighting monsters? He doesn't specify which he means, but both is a pretty accurate answer.

Giving a smirk of his own to Ed, one that the others might consider a bit creepy, he tilted his head and popped a hand on his hip. It was nice knowing that Ed wasn't all too bothered by the display. Comforting even, especially given how often his powers could make people uncomfortable or creeped out. The fact that Ed smirked too made something warm bubble in his stomach and he could feel skeletal butterflies flapping in his stomach, something he tried to ignore.

"I could summon more, if we need them. But for now, I figured this should be enough," he explained, giving Brennen a nod. "He's ex-military, so he knows how to follow orders. As long as you relay them to me first, he'll obey you."
alchemyfreak: (fma57)

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-07-31 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
There wasn't really much that could get to him, Nico had already reached that point. As useful as his aura might be, Ed intended to stay as far away from him as possible if there was ever a need for that to come out. Otherwise, Nico was just like anyone else to him. Someone with some abilities trying to fit in the best way he knew how. He's ignorant to the other's thoughts and feelings, but at least that made the whole thing less awkward - especially for this.

Luckily, Ed's already smirking as Nico explains Brennan or he might give away his amusement at the idea that someone being military meant they were good at listening. If only he knew living proof of the opposite was standing right before him. "I thought it might be something like that. No need to go digging them all up until we need them, right?"

Subtle misdirection, he's still trying not to laugh at that whole idea.

Traveling to the temple
Much like when the first team went out to scout Jason had prepared for everything he thought might happen. His messenger bag was loaded down with everything he thought he might need short of a change of clothes. His jacket was zipped up to hide the bat symbol on his chest, because one never knew when they might need a handy taser but his secret identity was important to him here.

He had stepped up as if he was the leader of the group he had been paired with, since he had gone with the first group. Beyond mostly remembering the way, he could also feel something off the closer they got.

Once he saw their destination in the distance he lifted a hand in the air and whistled to get the other's attention. "That would be our destination, We wont make that by nightfall. We should set up camp for tonight." He hadn't spoke much on the way out, but now that the prize was in sight he felt a little more relaxed.

Camping
The night set in pretty quick, and Jason had made a point to sit off by himself, leaning against a tree reading a book for as long as his little clip on light lasted. he could have gone over to the fire but by the time the light died he slipped the book back in his bag and pushed himself up, leaving the bag by the tree.

He walked to circle the perimeter of the camp. Not wanting to overlook anything that could leave the team in danger. The guns rested at his sides in the holsters ready to go if danger presented itself. But the night seemed to be going quietly. Jason didn't know which bothered him more, the quiet or the idea that whatever that force he could feel hadn't made itself known yet.

He had opted not to try and sleep that night, there was to much on his mind for it. So, when the sun was just starting to rise he walked from Camp just fair enough to watch the sun start to peak out over the clouds, taking his phone out he finally powered it on to check his messages. A cigarette lit up as he smoked away from the others, allowing himself a few moments ponder sending a message before deciding against it. Crushing out the cigarette and shutting off the phone again he turned to head back to camp.

Monster Fighting (CW; minor self harm)
The closer they got to the temple the more the random monsters seemed to appear. He had expected something like this, and despite lacking sleep he was awake and alert, both guns gripped in his hands shots fired into monsters that came into his vicinity. He had to be mindful of ammunition. He had expected trouble but not a wave of monsters.

"Fuck it!" he screamed after getting hit in the jaw and knocked off his feet by one of the monsters. Pushing himself up he shoved the guns in their holsters and jumped back, flipping himself over to put some distance from his attacker before he knelled again pushing his sleeves up then yanked the all-blades from his boots turning both copper blades to slash the top of his arms to power the blades that seem to double in size. Twisting them in his hands against as if the cuts didn't hurt.

"Come on then, let's play." He called out running back at the monster

i. camping;;

After having fallen in with a group that had been kind enough to let him join their pre-organized efforts, Akihiko was excited to travel alongside them to find the mysterious temple the scouts had put their efforts into finding. He'd likely pester for as much information as could be given, and was open to anyone who might want to strike up conversation on their as of yet peaceful journey out.

When it was time to make camp, he helped in any way he could to set up the site, keen to see if he could offer any of his new acquaintances aid. He himself had only a sleeping bag, but truth be told he wasn't ready to sleep just yet; Akihiko could likely be found perched at the edge of the campsite with his phone. He was both used to staying up through the Dark Hour, and unused to feeling the presence of nonhuman entities outside of the single hour in the dead of night. It set him a bit on edge, so he kept an idle watch alongside the skeletal guard that Nico had pulled up. Which honestly? Quite cool that it could be summoned and then left to its own devices.

iii. monster fighting;; (CW: suicide fakeout)

With the first few encounters, he managed to keep to the sidelines or purely to close combat. He'd promised his healing skills and didn't want to use up too much of his stamina on offense if it was going to be needed often. It was good to be forced to get a size up of their opponents before getting flashy anyhow, since he was used to mostly shadowy entities.

When several set upon them from either side though, after a quick scan of what was ahead, he readied himself. Without hesitating, he reached under his vest and drew his evoker, flipped the muzzle between his eyes and pulled the trigger. Through his skull and out the back, a plume of what appeared to be shattered glass blew out and formed together into a hulking figure behind him. Akihiko put away the pistol with a little grin to himself; it had been some time since he'd been able to fight alongside Polydeuces. For anyone he may have talked to on the hike, he likely would have warned about the cameo appearance of the spirit, but likely did not think to warn of how exactly it was summoned.

"Clear the left for a second!" Directly after, he murmured a word to himself, the warning just before electricy gathered around the Persona before channeling through two of the monsters, both stumbling with the shock for a moment and giving an opening for someone to jump in.

Al's been up for a while, having decided to keep watch. He's used to long nights without sleep from the time he was armor, and though sleeping is a luxury he now has, he doesn't sleep too often. So he immediately notices when Chloe begins tossing and turning, pulled out of sleep by something he assumes isn't too pleasant. A nightmare, perhaps?

He quickly scoots closer, looking her over for anything that might give him a sign as to what's bothering her before tilting his head and giving her a sympathetic look.

"Brother gets nightmares sometimes too. Do you mind if I ask what it was?" he asks softly, not wanting to wake the others.

The temple looms ahead and Nico feels a sudden rush of trepidation run through his bones. This is it, he thinks. This is where he'll use the most of his powers to hopefully put the deity back to sleep. Already, he can feel it stirring and the strength of it resonates within him, making his heart thud against his ribcage. Looking around, he takes in the other teams and waits to make sure all are present and accounted for. When he's sure everyone is ready, he takes a deep breath and closes his eyes, concentrating on the strongest source of power.

"I might pass out from this, so someone will need to get the baggie of ambrosia from my bag, in case I do. It'll look like lemon squares, really. But don't touch or eat any of it because it'll burn through your bodies," he tells the groups around him. He hopes he won't pass out, but there's never any telling with things like this. His powers are strong, but they occasionally come with a price, and that price is exhaustion. And with something as powerful as a god, he might wear himself out.

But there's no time to think about that. People are suffering because of this thing and Nico wants to make sure that stops. He's familiar with gods, probably more so than anyone else here, and he wants to make sure that people are safe from whatever lies within the temple.

Taking another deep breath, he nods, more to himself than anyone else, and then looks around again.

"Everyone ready?"

Being just like anyone else to Ed was a gift Nico secretly treasured. He remembered the looks he got at camp, the way people would shy away from him, but Ed never seems to do that. The thought prompted a little bit of color to warm his ears, but he staunchly shoved aside any intrusive thoughts. He had a job to do and he couldn't let himself get distracted.

"Typically, they dig themselves up," he said, chuckling a little. "But I'll save my energy for later. With this god, there's no knowing what might happen if I try to put it to sleep."

Once Keith got past the whole skeleton thing (because that wasn't creepy, really...), he'd been okay with dealing through the trip with it being there. It seemed pretty harmless, if not just downright gross, and he was just going to stay on the other side of the group over here.

However, when the fecal matter hit the air circulation device, Keith pushed himself to get over any effects from Nico's aura he might be feeling to step up and help. His own two blades appeared in a flash of purple and red light respectively, and he crouched into a fight stance, gritting his teeth and ignoring the warnings to stay back.

"You don't have to do this alone," he snapped back.
