[Taken from the June TDM, with some additions:]

Whether you've just arrived in the city or you've been here a while, and you have a sensitivity to the spiritual, magical, multidimensional, or anything else outside the realm of everyday normal, you've probably noticed a distinct uptick in weird feelings, strange nightmares, or daymares - hallucinations of scary things that are lurking just behind you.

You're not the only one who's noticed it.

There are rumors going around that the psychological and spiritual disturbances are due to the emergence or re-emergence of a deity. Some people say that it's something new that's come through the portal with the sharp increase in new arrivals recently, and others say it's simply an ancient spiritual presence or some ancient incorporeal monster that's been somehow awakened. Gramarye, the top-tier magic research center in Riverview Quarantine, has been studying anyone who's felt this presence, and have recently confirmed that whatever it is, it's being fed by all the extra energies and prayers and thoughts as the city's population increases. The one thing everyone agrees on is that, if the expanding community is feeding the entity, then the entity has got to go!

A scouting party recently travelled into the Abandoned City and forests outside the walls to search for leads or any other evidence of a way to solve the problem. After a day of searching, the team stumbled upon an abandoned temple. While it didn't seem like much, its exterior run-down and wood rotting amongst the centuries' old mulch and muck, it felt... unsettling. Alive, almost. One member of the party could feel a powerful presence emanating from it; realizing they were out of their depth, the team returned to the Quarantine to relay the information and obtain reinforcements.

Teams are now being assembled across the city to travel into the Abandoned City or the forests outside the walls and find this temple once more. The mission might be dangerous, though - there are the usual dangers of venturing out into the wilds, but this time, characters may also face booby traps, spectral or physical guardians, and if the entity itself gets awoken? Someone may have to kill it.

[So this log will be set up in 'stages'. The first few headers will be closed to each of the teams for initial travel meetings, camping, monster fights, etc. Feel free to post your own top-levels underneath and tag out, mingle, whatever you'd like. Headers for further 'stages' of the mission (such as once all the teams meet up at the temple/deity hideout) will also be posted so that teams can intermingle/have more CR.

Since there are so many people involved, consider this one big mingle thread in the vein of the TDMs. Here's a link to the google doc for those interested as well.]

i. Camping

It was pretty strange, only knowing a few people in this group. But Lyle was prepared, at least as much as possibly could be. He had supplies needed, especially for his weapon of choice: long range rifle and a hand gun along with the supplies for them.

Shhh... you don't really need where he borrowed those from.

But as they hunkered down for the night, Lyle found a spot where he could pull out the rifle and make sure it was cleaned and good working condition. Considering he relies on fire arms, best to make sure there's not going to be any problems.

ii. Monster fight

When the monsters began to make their appearance, Lyle moved to the side to let those with more of a physical fighting skill through. He did however having his long range rifle out, looking further towards the temple and taking aim further off into the distance.

That was until he heard a crashing sound behind him. The problem with sniping... a little hard to keep watching everything.

"Shit!"

Lyle grabbed for his hand gun and whipped around right as one of the creatures came crashing out now in front of him. Could he get that shot off? He'll certainly try.

"Hey, watch it!"

Ed had a lot to do in this group, keeping an eye on Nico to make sure no one gave him any trouble and he wasn't pushing himself too hard, keeping an eye on the new people in case they were dangerous, keeping an eye on Lyle to make sure he wasn't in danger - and of course, something was bound to bend in all of that juggling.

He had just sliced through one of the monsters coming at him, but when Ed heard the crash he turned to face the source of the noise and realized just how close that thing was to the one here with the least hand-to-hand experience. There was no sniping from that distance, that's for sure.

Whether Lyle fires the gun, or hits the thing when he does, Ed doesn't pay attention. Clapping his hands together and slamming them to the ground where he crouched nearby and watching the spikes of earth shoot up out of nowhere - stabbing through it from all angles. He panted as he stood again, wiping some dirt off his face with the back of a gloved hand. "You all right?"

Lyle had gotten the gun in his hand and probably got a shot out, but no matter what he did, the damage that he caused quite handily paled in comparison to Ed's alchemy where spikes suddenly shot up out of the ground and impaled the monster. Lyle just stared in shock for a moment as he collected his wits before he looked at Ed.

Well, if this hadn't been as intense a situation as it was, Lyle's thought would have been "cool!"

"Yeah, I'm all right. Thanks."

Lyle picked up his rifle again, which had been dropped in the name of grabbing the hand gun in time.

If this had been any other situation, Ed might have joked about how alchemy was convenient in a pinch, but this was serious and the trip wasn't exactly short. Combined with the monsters, plus not knowing what could lie ahead for them all he was a little too tired for quick wit.

"No problem. Things out here can be pretty unpredictable."

All seriousness here. Not even joking about that. He had almost been attacked by a monster and had been saved by alchemy-created spears stabbing it quite thoroughly.

"I'll be more careful."

Yeah, he knows the long range gun part of this is useful, but if he's essentially a sitting duck that needs to be saved every five minutes, he's better off trying to club them with the butt of the rifle.

Although he and Lyle had never fought together like this he knew he didn't need a lecture on watching his own back. That had been a close call, and it was stressful but it was certainly more stressful for the target. Ed just wished there was something he could offer, because a long range weapon like that would probably best benefit them from the trees, except that they were traveling so Lyle couldn't really sit in the trees and watch them from above. And Ed was no expert on guns, nevermind long range ones, specifically.

"You might want to stick with a pistol until we get there, at least when we're in one location you'll have more time to react with that thing." He didn't like making the suggestion, mostly because he assumed Lyle could figure that much out on his own and didn't need to be told by someone several years younger than him how to fight. He also knew that this what out of his element, and Ed knew how to be a tactician when it was needed.

"Yeah, pistol might be better for the moment." He had reached that conclusion as well. Being able to fire into the distance was useful and helped clear out creatures that were coming towards them, but being a sitting duck wasn't useful out here.

Good in theory, not so much in practice.

So Lyle put the rifle back over his shoulder, pulling out the pistol to use that instead.

"When we get to the temple, maybe you can find a tree for a good vantage point or something." At least he hopes any fighting that happens there is going to remain in mostly the same place. "We're all going to have to worry about backing up Nico while he does whatever he needs to in order to make this thing go back to normal."

Lyle nodded. "When we get there, I'll find some place to camp out and take out these creatures from there." One would think that it would be all in one place, but who knows. "I'll do everything I can."

"Good plan."

That was a lot of the reason he had asked Lyle to come along, there hadn't been much use of his sniping skills in Purg but Ed was aware of them and he figured that would put them at a disadvantage when they got to the big fight. Which was no doubt coming.

"Thanks, I'm sure you'll take care of it once we get there."

Honestly, he found himself lucky that Lyle was so easy going about all of this, considering if the situation had been reversed and he knew this version first he was pretty sure the other one would have laughed at him and kept his distance with half the things he told him about. He knew he was serious when the matter called for it though, and despite their bickering a good person to have around for these things. Even in Purg Lyle had been trustworthy and loyal so as useless as he was sure to feel right now, Ed knew he'd have the opportunity to change that once the time struck.

Yeah, he didn't exactly feel like he was helping much at the moment, but he was sure that would change once they actually got to a location that was more stable, where he could set up shop and just go to town.

For the moment though, he packed up his rifle and made sure he had the ammo for the hand gun handy. It would be easier if he had the hand gun at the ready. Didn't mean he still couldn't pick off as many creatures as he could at a distance, but this would be easier.

"All right. Let's go."
