[Giant mech? Sure! Why not! It's not like Lyle didn't have any experience with this sort of thing. Granted they weren't as bulky. Or needed two pilots... but whatever. He was going volunteer to do whatever he could with them.
[How strange was Lyle's life really. Sometimes even he had to wonder. So he'd ended up with this small puffin like bird that insisted on following him. Normally it was fine alone by itself, but today... today it had kept trying to follow him out the door. But it wasn't like it was trying to make a run for it either. When it had joined him on the landing just outside the communal floor, it had just... stopped beside him, standing next to him before glancing up like it was wondering what they were going to do now.
So it was with him as he wandered the market. Oh good, wandering a dog themed market with a bird. Meh, like he really cared. When it wasn't so crowded, Lyle put the bird down so it could walk with him. When it was, he picked it up and it was content to snuggle in his hands and watch what was going on around them]
[it's one of Osomatsu's days off and he's in the market, poking around for groceries. Karamatsu has been making food for them, so if he gets an idea on something he wants to cook, he usually needs new ingredients. Osomatsu's got a list, and a full bag of groceries already. he's also wearing these little dog ears? that he got from one of the booths.
he looks up from his vegetable inspection when he feels a familiar presence, and he turns to see Lyle walking along. immediately, his expression brightens up, and he smiles, waving over his friend... boy friend?]
[It wasn't hard for Osomatsu to get Lyle's attention. (Yeah, boyfriend was probably right.) When the other waved, Lyle waved back, heading in his direction... slowly. Because he was making sure the bird stayed with him since it was walking at the moment. The porg was more than happy to follow him, luckily staying close enough that it wasn't in danger.
And Lyle kept glancing back at it.
Finally they reach Osomatsu]
Hey there! How're you?
[And the porg walks over to look up at Osomatsu, chirping up at him. Hello, person]
Hey, always good. Gotta eat after all. Find anything interesting?
[And then he sees Osomatsu looking at the bird. Lyle bends down and picks the porg up. Two hands were required and it quickly snuggled up, looking like it was using his hands as a place to perch on the rocks]
So I see you've met my... whatever this bird is. Looks kind of like a puffin. I called him "Kara".
I can see penguin too. [He added as the porg waddled around in between the two of them for the moment. Yep… this was a semi-aquatic animal. Didn’t do so well on the land]
A bit. He can get up onto things, but I don’t think flying is really their thing.
[It had been a while since Lyle had had some company up on the 14th floor. Mostly he had been living by himself up there. Well, he was alone anymore. He had a dog - which had been brought over by Ed and given to him; a small puffin like bird - which had followed him home one day when there were a ton of those things around (it had even tried to follow him up the stairs, bless its little heart); and Haro, which was currently in the bedroom.
Well, wouldn't you know, someone's belongings were brought up to Floor 14. Initially it wasn't person who was going to sharing the space with him, but Lyle would find out soon enough.
[ Lockon stopped short in the doorway. There’s only one person in the world who called him by his name. It had to be a coincidence. Lyle was the first person he ran into when he arrived and now they’re roommates? Either someone was trying really hard to get them talking again or… Could it just be a coincidence?
The stupefied look on his face gave way to a friendly smile and Lockon waved a hand in greeting. ]
Hey, Lyle.
[Unfortunately, the word died on his lips and he lit up at the sight of a familiar little robot. ] Haro!
[ Don’t be that way, Lyle. Neil and Haro have been partners for – as far as Neil’s concerned – the last several years. But them? They’ve been estranged far longer than that. Which isn’t to say he isn’t happy to be sharing a living space with his brother again.
He kneels down and scoops Haro up with a warm laugh, then turns his focus back to Lyle. ]
So, we’re going to be living together, again, huh?
[ Hopefully, it will all work out. If it doesn’t, Neil will be the bigger person and step aside. After all, his brother was here first. Though, the place seems kind of empty now that he’s looking around. ]
[Well, you could be happier to see your brother... or at least show it.
Haro is happy to sit in Lockon's arms. It's where he is supposed to be, right?]
Yeah, looks like we are. They brought up your stuff earlier so yeah, just grab a bed. Which ever one you want.
[Lyle's willing to give it a try at least]
Well, I'm the only human here. All the others have either moved out or left. But I'm not completely alone. There's-
[And he's interrupted by the rather frantic sound of a bird before the porg comes running into the room. It stops when it sees Lyle and chirps at him before basically hopping over to him]
What? I'm right here. Well, there's one of them. I named him "Kara".
[ The only human. That makes him smile just a bit. It’s not that Neil thinks it’s like Lyle to phrase it in such a way – he can’t claim to know his own brother well enough to make a judgement like that – but he likes that it’s phrase that way. Maybe it’s because he’s been partnered with Haro for so long, it’s hard for him to think of Haro as just a robot. Maybe if he’d ever had pets, he wouldn’t think of them as simple possessions either, but more like companions.
The porg’s squawking drew Neil from his thoughts and he blinked slowly at it. ]
Isn’t that the bird you picked up… [ When I got here? They all look so similar. This one, though, he’s sure looks familiar. He grins and tucks Haro in the crook of his arm so he can reach out to the little bird. ]
Nice to meet you, Kara.
[ And then he focused his attention back on Lyle, an almost eager smile on his face. ]
[Well, Haro wasn’t just a robot to Lyle either. Might be why had been a little miffed at Neil basically running over and picking up the haro so quickly. He was his buddy too! But it was true; Lyle had been the only human until Neil had walked through the door. He wasn’t anymore]
Probably. It did follow me home not long after.
[The porg looked at the new person, inching closer to look at him. Yes, it looked like the other human but didn’t smell the same. But at hearing its name, the porg made a chirp in reply. Yep, was starting to recognize what a “Kara” was]
Anyone else? No, no one. Just three of us… well now four.
[ Just them, huh? Lockon could see how this could be awkward. Was he even wanted here? It’s not like he knew his brother well enough to gauge his feelings. What a sorry excuse for a brother Lockon turned out to be.
Unconsciously, his arms squeezed slightly more around Haro. All the casual friendliness melted away from his face, replaced by worry. ]
Lyle, if it’s going to be troublesome for you that I’m here, I can see about living somewhere else.

He was a special vehicle operator after all.
Now who was he going to get paired with?]

time to meet kara

Ooooooi! Lyyyyyle!
yes, definitely!
And Lyle kept glancing back at it.
Finally they reach Osomatsu]
Hey there! How're you?

Not too bad! Just lookin' for stuff for dinner.
[when the porg comes up to him and chirps, Osomatsu notices. he looks down at it. blinking. what's that? an owl?]

Ehhh? Kara? [he glances from Lyle to the bird, then leans in, reaching out a finger towards it] You... didn't name it after Karamatsu, did you?
no subject
though the guy thought his name was Kyle]Actually, no. "Kara" means friend in Gaelic. And he literally followed me home so clearly he wanted to be a friend.
[The porg coos at Osomatsu, happy where it is and watching with large soulful eyes]

And you don't know what it is? [not surprising. the place was crawling with alien animals, both inside and out of the quarantine]

[Keith was staring at your porg, Lyle... that sounded a lot dirtier than it actually was.]
no subject
[Lyle looks down at the porg that was hopping along beside him. When Lyle stopped moving, it stopped turning to him and looking up]
They called it a porg. So I guess that's what it is. Looks like a puffin without a beak to me.
no subject
[Keith stared at it for a second, his head tilted slightly in consideration.]
Does it fly?

A bit. He can get up onto things, but I don’t think flying is really their thing.

Where did you find it?

[Kara wandered over as Keith crouched down, looking at the hand that came out towards him and gave a curious chirp at it. He didn't seem afraid of it]
There was like a week where there was a bunch of these things. He started following me around and came home with me.
no subject
[Keith looked up at Lyle with a quirked eyebrow.]
If I ever used that excuse, my dad would make me release it back into the wild.
[Of course, a lot of desert creatures weren't exactly friendly pets to be bringing home...]
