| The woods don't seem incredibly sinister anymore, what with the Amusement Park of the Old City being nearly fully open next to it now. As night falls however, the faint, tinny noise of rides and games becomes almost eerie in the planet-light of the Capital World. The mission is simple, Jyn wants to find out if the copse of interconnected trees really are sentient and if it would be safe to move them to a different spot so the encroaching Amusement Park won't cause them any damage. It's supposed to be easy. Sure. |

start up the campfire song song
Still, he's here, he's a professional Perimeter Guard dude on a professional job. He already knows 4/5 of the rest of the team, he guesses. So that's neat. Communication is a big thing with teamwork. And he loves teamwork, and it's kind of nice to be along on this mission at all, so. Why would he not be down for greeting and conversing.
Finn's about as chill as he gets, generally speaking. Alert and never quite relaxed, but genuinely interested in helping with as much campsite stuff as he can. There are no complaints to be had about taking watches or pulling firewood duty thus far.
Can't spend the whole time staring down the treeline, right?
or if you want something more specific just hmu wherever and i'll make it happen. i'm chill. ]

He takes up a seat next to Finn, helping himself to the food on offer. He hadn't known what it was the first time Jyn had given him some, but now he's very much aware of the little creatures all over the place. As a matter of fact... ]
You knowβ we have one of these as a pet, back at our place. A porg. Her name's Oona.
no subject
Oona, huh? [ It's definitely a name he's never heard before. ] Never really pictured these things making good pets.
no subject
Me neither, actually. But she's pretty well-behaved. Likes to cuddle a lot, gets along with the dog. [ Jim shrugs. ] Lucy saved her during that big flood.

Camp fire watching/insomnia
The idea to meditate is one that keeps floating around in her mind. As good of an idea it is, she doesn't want to be distracted. No, the best thing she can do is take a deep breath and focus on the camp fire--add to it if it starts to die out.
Though, it's a bit weird to know there's still some porg on a stick off to the side for anyone to eat. They were everywhere and soulful creatures. It's...it's just weird to her, but food was food.]

Volunteering to be one of the Guard's escorts for this mission had seemed like a good idea at the time, but now that he's out of the Quarantine, he's starting to second guess himself. The forests back home hadn't really been safe, especially since the possibilities of Sylvans were high in certain areas where the Veil was thin. This area has the heavy feeling that the Brecilian Forest of Ferelden still carries.
As the fire crackles around the area they've picked to use as a camp, Cullen runs a gloved hand down his face and really thanks that the uniform of the Guard is far more practical than his armor. However, his sword, shield and gun are well within reach if the need arises.]
You seem tired. You should rest.
[Pot. Cauldron.]

I'm fine. Better someone keep watch.
[See? She has a reason to be up! Someone should make sure the camp fire doesn't...go out...or something.]
no subject
But, if he's going to be with this group, he at least should be friendly.]
It's true, but that needn't be you. And you shouldn't stand watch all night either.
[He knows he isn't sleeping anytime soon, even if it would be practical to do so.]

He's crawling out of his tent in the middle of the night β3? 4? He's kind of lost track of what time it isβ, only to find Rey sitting by the fire. Zipping up his tent again, he makes his way over and takes a seat next to her. ]
You should be sleeping. [ He means in general. She should be trying to get some sleep, at some point during the mission. ]
no subject
Someone needs to keep watch.
[Is her automatic reply, but she does place another log on the fire to keep it going.]
You okay?

[he has zero qualms about the porg. he and jyn eat it so much when they're out here that he's perfected the right moment for maximum tenderness and crispiness over a fire.] Taste it now, any longer and it gets too tough.
[before he tucks in for the night, he's sitting near the fire, looking over his datapad and munching on the aforementioned porg.]
[he'll get up later in the night and leave the tent he shares with jyn, making his way over to whoever is currently sitting awake. watch rotation! whether the other person likes it or not. the key to a successful team is making sure no one person is hoarding all the duties that keep them tired through the next day. when possible, of course.] Time to switch, go rest. My turn.

i was told by apple care i could go to jumanji and get the moss
The dream goal here is to do a good job of watching his teammates' backs wherever he can. Finn's more about firearms than knives or hand-to-hand, so he's maybe not he ideal cover in some of these cases, but he's still gonna try and he's gonna stay committed. Some plausible options this fine journey include:
- Any of your standard content re: trying to watch everyone's backs. Shooting vines! Dragging incapacitated friends to relative safety! Pulling people out of gross vegetation pit traps! He's got sharp hearing and the eye of the tiger, and a whole lot of determination.
- Alternatively, on the other end of the spectrum, possibly in need of assistance from any of these issues himself. Finn is neither stealthy nor sly, and a lot of his own problem-solving techniques boil down to bodily hurling himself into things. You take a D&D party out on a quest like this, it's good to have a fighter class sometimes.
On the bright side, if he's sinking to his death or getting snagged by fines or slowly losing the feeling in his limbs as part of the "and now the flower and/or any nearby wildlife gets a fresh lunch" process, he's gonna be very vocal about it. Lots of oh come on and the general air of someone who knew that things were going to go extremely Wrong today.
Anyway, if anyone would like a specific/closed starter or anything, feel free to let me know and I will gladly deliver. ]
And then you put the moss on the gaping wound
The other Perimeter Guard member is someone he has seen around the headquarters but hasn't truly met before coming on this mission. He seems nice enough but he reminds the former Commander of so many new recruits that Cullen lets him do as he will as much as is feasible without being dangerous to the entire party.
But one to many times he's thought that jumping at a target is a good idea. As Finn attempts to charge forward again, Cullen reaches out and grabs him by the back of his jacket.]
Do you know how to use a shield?
[Please, Maker, let this man know something of what Cullen is saying because he doesn't have enough time to teach him on the fly.]
no subject
No one can say he's always on the right track. It's been a work in progress, which Poe one time punched him on the ear for. He thought that was awfully bold considering Poe's history and personality, but you know.
Safe to say he isn't expecting someone to grab the back of his jacket on this occasion. Or the question, just generally. So for half a second he devotes most of his mental energy to the "???" movement, brow furrowed. ]
Yeah, of course. Started training with them years ago. [ If Finn sounds a little like he's wondering how it's relevant and where Cullen's going with this, it's because he's wondering.
Once he got out into the real world and the star war part of being in star wars, the fighting turned out to be a lot more blasters and spaceships and a lot less melee. He hasn't exactly needed to put one into use. ]

jyn doesn't scream but it's a close thing and the hiss of air she pushes out is as high pitched as a shriek. which is a far cry from the casual way she calls out, ]
Uh, Finn.
[ these pants are ruined, she can feel the blood seeping into her boots. this is terrible. ]

Finn considers the pros and cons of panicking a little, in one of those detective-show-esque rundowns where everything slows down around them and they can watch the individual flutters of hummingbird wings. He opts against panicking. He thinks he will not have it. He can do that later. ]
What the hell kind of a jungle is this?!
[ Okay he saves most of it for later. It's good to hang onto enough to stay on edge. Let him just
sling an arm over his shoulders here. We're gonna three legged race this shit. Get out of dart town and deal with what looks like a very organically-sourced arrow.
Make a note to self to shoot the flower. That feels equally organic. ]

He doesn't get caught in yet another vine, at least. He does trip up over a bunch of dried up roots and leaves, though, only to find himself tumbling straight into a pit of quicksand. Quickdirt. Whatever. He tries to pull one leg out, only to stick his other foot in, and slowly he starts to sink deeper into the pool of dirt swallowing him whole.
His voice will be heard in the immediate vicinity the moment he realizes he's stuck: ] Hey! Need a little help here! Help!
[ But it's not the only encounter he'll have, obviously. A good portion of the flora out here seems intent on killing them, so even though he doesn't have the unfortunate luck of being caught in another trap, it's likely the rest of the team will. He'll come to the aid of anyone who needs it, whether that is cutting vines with his magical dagger, or dragging someone unconscious to safety, then trying his best to get them to wake up again. It may or may not include splashing some water on your face. ]

[because he is always prepared, cassian does have a rope, which he's already tugging out of his bag just in case.] Don't struggle in it.
[he's moving urgently anyway, taking in the edge of the pit and being careful where he steps. he can just imagine jyn laughing at both of them while singlehandedly yanking them free.]
[after making sure a nearby tree branch is sturdy enough, he throws the rope over it, ties the other end to the trunk, then swings the loose end.] Hold that, to keep yourself from sinking in deeper.
no subject
[ Not his first rodeo hereβ so to say. He does relax a little when he sees Cassian. He might be waist-deep in quicksand dirt, but he knows and trusts Cassian to do anything he can to get him out of here.
He nods, taking the end of the rope and curling it around his hand and arm several times, until it's pulled taut. He gives it a testing tug just to make sure it's holding for now. ] Thanks. Uh... how can I help?
[ Does he just stay still? He will, really, if that'll help. It's just that feeling the dirt move around his legs and feet is incredibly harrowing. ]

[he is slowly discovering he might hate plants, which doesn't bode well for the state of his very green and leafy apartment.]
[one of the assassin vines twists around his ankle and yanks him to the ground with a thud. if you're right in front of him, maybe lend a hand?? even if he is immediately digging around for his knife to cut himself free, two more vines are creeping their way around his other leg too.]
[once he notices the dangers of spores, he starts cutting out little cloth facemasks out of a spare shirt, long enough to tie around people's heads so they don't have to hold them up. it's not the best filter to breathe through, but it's better than no filter.] Here, use this until we pass the flowers. Or maybe even the whole time.

the vine had wrapped around her neck without even a whisper, thorns digging into her throat and leaving drips of blood sliding down her paling skin.
hi. ]
no subject
[he cuts through the vines at his legs and cuts at himself a little in his hasty process, but it's definitely better to have bleeding legs than jyn with a bloody throat.]
[he scrambles for her immediately, and he grabs the vine with his bare hands. the thorns cut into his palm, but he loosens it enough to slice through it, freeing her neck. he comes very close to her skin in the process, but cassian is very well versed in necks and knives that he never came actually close to hurting her. it's almost instinct, how fast and quick and good he moves.]
