The woods don't seem incredibly sinister anymore, what with the Amusement Park of the Old City being nearly fully open next to it now. As night falls however, the faint, tinny noise of rides and games becomes almost eerie in the planet-light of the Capital World. The mission is simple, Jyn wants to find out if the copse of interconnected trees really are sentient and if it would be safe to move them to a different spot so the encroaching Amusement Park won't cause them any damage. It's supposed to be easy. Sure. |

[Or at least, she hopes she won't. Maybe she'll exhaust herself to the point of passing out. Or, find time to quiet her mind and get some actual sleep.
Urgh, Jim, why you gotta be persistent? She shrugs her shoulders at him. At least around him, she could let her guard down a little.]
Can't quiet my mind. I feel...restless in a way, but I tried meditating for a little bit, didn't help.
[As for Jim....]</small. If you're fine, why aren't you back in your tent?
no subject
[ He's not done trying tonight, though. He won't try to get her into a tent, but he might see if he can convince her to take a short nap out here. That way they both can still keep watch and be ready if anything gets close to their campsite. ]
Mmm... one of those nights, huh. [ He nods at her, understanding. Her question draws a sigh out of him. ] Don't know. Some nights it's just harder to fall asleep. I think... I'm just used to having Victor next to me.
no subject
I managed to some sleep in, you know.
[A few hours before waking up and finding herself here.
There's a hum of understanding from her.]
It's...hard to adjust to. Going from having someone next to you...and then being alone. It's a feeling you never want to get used to again.
[Her voice is soft there, and come to think of it, she slept better whenever someone else was around. But only someone she trusted, nothing else.]

[ Rey knows about Bones, after all. How hard Jim took it, how he often had nights when he couldn't even lie in bed, let alone sleep. She knows how well he understands, having to get used to a change like that.
Because it's not the sleeping alone so much as knowing that person won't come back that feels the worst. At least now he knows Victor isn't gone; he just isn't out here, right now. ]
Mm, I brought some energy bars with me. They're pretty tasty. You want one?
no subject
Rey cast a glance at him and then back at the remains of the porg.]
...Sure.
[She wasn't going to go on a mission on an empty stomach.]
You didn't try the porg, did you?
no subject
I did, actually. Jyn fed me some porg stew on our last missionβ though I didn't know what it was at the time. But I had some tonight, too.
[ Apparently she thought Jim would think they were too cute to be eaten or something. ]
You knowβ Lucy has one of those as a pet. But it's... kinda like when I had that chicken, Petunia. Didn't stop me from eating chicken.
no subject
It's okay? I wasn't sure what to expect from it.
[Rey swallows the piece she was eating and looked at him. He...didn't eat, Petunia...did he?]
I hope you're not going to tell her you ate one of her pet's friends.
no subject
[ There are a bunch of porg all over the place. Sure, it had been a bit of a shock at first, learning that those cute little things had been what Jyn had fed him, but he got over it. He won't eat any if he can help it, but out here he has to admit there are few choices as practical as this.
And no, he did not eat Petunia! She's currently a very happy hen, living on a farm in the outskirts of the city. He's not some kind of monster. ]
Are you kidding? She would never forgive me. I'm pretty sure she doesn't even know that some people eat them. I'd rather preserve her innocence.
no subject
Could use something for the taste--or I don't know. I don't actively cook this stuff.
[Hey, Rey doesn't know! Or if he told her, she forgot! It's sometimes hard to keep up with him since he has so many adventures now with his new family--and he also has many adventures on the side too. He's a busy man.]
I don't know! I don't even know how old she is and what she can handle. [But yeah, if the girl was innocent, learning that someone could eat her pet would not be the best thing to do.]
no subject
Yeah, the stew was nicer. I think there were spices and stuff.
[ Practically gourmet food, considering they were out in the wild. ]
She's nine. And she can handle a lot, but I still think that's a bit much. [ He doesn't want to traumatize the poor girl. ]
We haven't done a movie night in a while, [ He says apropos of nothing. ] We should fix that when we get back.
no subject
Sorry..I...I thought of one of my friends--he's a Wookie, big, giant covered in fur and he's name is Chewbacca. He's called Chewie for short--and he was eating a porg on the island they're from. So...I thought ...I thought of a random phrase that's a bit funny.
[And also made her miss her friend. She hoped he was doing well.]
She made a stew? Why couldn't she have done it this time? [At least then they wouldn't see the gaping maw of a porg as it roasted on the spit.]
Well, someday she's going to learn that porgs are eaten. Do you want her to find out in a campfire way? [She gestured to their environment with porg on a spit--well whatever is left of it. But it does make her wonder about something...] Are you going to adopt her? Or, have you and Victor...talked about anything? [Marriage or...anything?]
No...no we haven't. We could...if you're up for it. [She didn't want to take him away from Victor, especially right after coming back home from a mission.] Could do my place, maybe even try a different beer to go with pizza.
no subject
[ Yeah, okay, that does sound pretty funny. And not even tired-funny, justβ silly. ]
I don't know. Maybe she just didn't bring the things she needed to do it with her this time around. [ Like a pot, or spices. Or maybe she just wanted variety. Jim doesn't ever contribute to campfire dinners since he can't cook, and as they say, beggars can't be choosers. ]
Noβ Look, she doesn't need to know now. She'll learn eventually. [ Possibly at school. Or going past some restaurant and seeing a somewhat traumatizing dish on the menu. Okay maybe he'll just tell her sometime.
Rey's question derails his train of thought. He presses his lips and shrugs. ] Don't know. I mean, we are all living together, so... I guess that sort of counts as adopting her.
[ Just not officially. But then that hardly seems to matter, here. As for what she means when she's asking him whether he's talked to Victor about 'anything'β he has no idea what she's really getting at. ]
Give me a couple days once we're back, then we'll set something up. I'll pick out a fun adventure movie this time around.
no subject
Maybe. You don't want to pack too many things on a trip like this. [Be tied down by them, or have them get in the way of things.][At least Jim had a connection with her. Better the girl learn it from her parents who could answer questions rather than be traumatized another way.]
That's nice. She has you and Victor to take care of her. [Ah, well, it's not her place to ask if Jim had any other plans of...maybe marrying Victor. Just...she wants to make sure he's happy--clearly he was at the party he threw--but, she doesn't want him to go through the same heartbreak again.]
Mm, that's fine. Though, I still say we do at least one space film--just to see what other worlds think about it. Not a documentary but like...that Mean Girls movie you showed me. [Satire and comedy, but in space!]
no subject
Yeah, exactly. But you could always ask her to make you some porg stew when we're back. I mean, if you're really hankering for it. [ He kids, really. ]
Yeah. I like to think we work well together in that aspect too. [ Neither Victor nor Jim have any experience taking care of a kid, but together they manage to each fill in where the other lacks. They complement each other. So far, it hasn't gone that badly. ]
Fiction, you mean. [ He nods. ] Sci-fi, then. I'll pick something out for us to watch. [ Probably something older because those are his favorite. ]
no subject
That, I don't have a doubt. I mean, you're good with people, why wouldn't you be good with kids? [Because kids are just tiny people? But, clearly, she doesn't know what happened when Jim and Lucy first met.] But, Victor is very nice. I didn't know who he was when we started chatting with one another.
[A nod of her head. Sci-fi would work--as long as it was comedy and not...depressing. Or, anything that really had a heavy feel to it.]
no subject
I'm not that good with kids. [ He arches his eyebrows, looking away with a tilt of his head. ] Should've seen when we first met. I'm pretty sure she was about ready to call the police on me.
[ Luckily Victor was there, and managed to calm things down. ]
We're close, now. But... we had a pretty rocky start.
no subject
[Which is the opposite of her situation, but she was slowly making strides towards fixing things. Little by little.
Though, right now she preferred to talk about Jim and his new life with Victor. Honestly, she was really happy for him.]
Since you're getting along well with her, do you think you'll want another kid? [What? If he likes one, maybe he'd have another? Or adopt one? Being a 'family' man kind of...suited him. At least, that's what she thought.]
no subject
[ He smiles fondly. He does care a lot about Lucy, though he doesn't really know what to say that they are to each other right now. He's more than just her friend; but he's not sure if he'd say he's her parent. It's not the same as Victor, he doesn't think.
His thoughts are derailed when Rey asks that question, though. If he were drinking anything right now, he'd have probably choked on it. ]
Wowβ! Where'd that come from? [ He raises an eyebrow at her. ] I'm notβ she's not even my kid, to begin with. Technically speaking. And Victor and I haven't even talked about anything like that. We haven't been together that long.
no subject
[Sorry, Rey is a bit confused about this. Jim was in a happy relationship. one that she could only assume would go on for quite a while. He also has one kid with Victor, wouldn't they want another? Wasn't that how relationships sort of worked? Another child for them to raise? Or, was she entirely over stepping bounds?
Yes, yes she was.]
So, you don't view her as your family? [Did she misread things there?] You could look into adopting her, if you want.
Besides, I mean, you're in a happy relationship. Victor has a daughter, I would've thought you'd want another one. [She shrugs. Hey, growing up on Jakku didn't give her the best example of what families were supposed to be like.]
no subject
Noβ that's not what I meant. I do care about her. It's just complicated, is all. She has Victor, and she sees him as a parent. It's different, with me.
[ He's more like 'Papa's boyfriend' than anything else at this point. Which, admittedly, is a step up from 'potential evil stepfather'. ]
That's not how things work. Not always, anyway. Victor and I didn't exactly go through the conventional steps in a relationship. We sort of... skipped ahead in a lot of things. But a kid is a lot of responsibility, and it takes time, and commitment, and... [ And hell, he doesn't even know if he'll choose to stay here, if one day he's given the chance to go home. ] It's just complicated, is all. I don't think we're ready for that.
