The woods don't seem incredibly sinister anymore, what with the Amusement Park of the Old City being nearly fully open next to it now. As night falls however, the faint, tinny noise of rides and games becomes almost eerie in the planet-light of the Capital World. The mission is simple, Jyn wants to find out if the copse of interconnected trees really are sentient and if it would be safe to move them to a different spot so the encroaching Amusement Park won't cause them any damage. It's supposed to be easy. Sure. |

jyn doesn't scream but it's a close thing and the hiss of air she pushes out is as high pitched as a shriek. which is a far cry from the casual way she calls out, ]
Uh, Finn.
[ these pants are ruined, she can feel the blood seeping into her boots. this is terrible. ]

Finn considers the pros and cons of panicking a little, in one of those detective-show-esque rundowns where everything slows down around them and they can watch the individual flutters of hummingbird wings. He opts against panicking. He thinks he will not have it. He can do that later. ]
What the hell kind of a jungle is this?!
[ Okay he saves most of it for later. It's good to hang onto enough to stay on edge. Let him just
sling an arm over his shoulders here. We're gonna three legged race this shit. Get out of dart town and deal with what looks like a very organically-sourced arrow.
Make a note to self to shoot the flower. That feels equally organic. ]

when finn grabs her up, jyn has a fleeting memory of struggling to carry cassian across the beach. it's odd to be on the opposite end of the spectrum. she doesn't think she likes it. no, no, she would prefer to not be the damsel in the distress in this situation, she much prefers to be hercules. ]
I would have defended those plants. And they turned on me.
[ talk about fucking traitors. ]
no subject
Jyn bad-mouthing plants is better than Jyn dying from poison, so. He'll take it. He'll go in for it. ]
Yeah, it's despicable. [ Now he kinda misses Rose. ] Who knew flowers were so picky about who they like?
[ He's not gonna tote her too far along before stopping to scope out this dart situation. Just far enough to not be at risk of more darting. ]
no subject
They should hate you, subtle as a bantha, stomping through the forest.
[ whoops, she tries to take a step to help them along, even though finn is supporting her fine!, and it crumples beneath her, crushing her into him with another startled noise, clutching at him. what the fuck. ]
I'm not sure-- I don't think I can feel my leg.
no subject
[ HE'S BEING BULLIED 2K18 neither friends nor strangers can let him live his unstealthy life.
More immediately relevant: wait what hold on that's? bad??? Luckily he knows how to function regardless of rising panic levels. ]
You'd be doing me a big favor if you got sure fast, Jyn. [ Come on brain think of things come on brain this is a bad situation that needs to be handled efficiently. ] Okay. Okay, we should get you down and get that thing out of your leg first. If there's something on it-- it's probably better not to leave it.
[ He sounds more like he's asking for corroboration and permission than anything else. Who has two thumbs and never got taught more than basic-ass first aid? This guy. The second this crossed over into her theoretically not being able to walk back to camp on her own, it flew out of his range of expertise. ]
no subject
this is the worst? ]
You're right. But we need something to hold pressure on it after we take it out.
[ she doesn't want to bleed to death ok ok ok ]
no subject
I'm sure hands won't cut it. [ It's gonna be fine. Totally great. Super fine.
Just gonna. Lower her a little ways out of shooting range there. Time to fake it until they make it and put off the panic for later. People said it was dumb for him to wear one of his 2 whole jackets on a mid-summer jungle mission in the outdoors. People said he would look foolish and boil to death. And you know what Finn said? Nothing. No one actually said that. He considered the idea.
But you know, once you've committed to black jeans, black boots, a black long-sleeved shirt and a leather jacket for a day-long trek through Jakku it's like. At a certain point you're committed to the Look.
Anyway the Force clearly works in mysterious ways, because now he can just go ahead and pop that jacket off and maybe it will help him keep his friend from bleeding to death until they can hit bandage town. ]
Could work? [ Like honestly? He'll make it work. Whatever. WHERE THERE'S A WILL THERE'S A WAY AND HE HAS EXTREME WILL. ]
no subject
There's a medkit at camp. It's got something in there for poison. [ in case he was wondering, in case he was worried. maybe she is just saying it for herself because force this would be such a chump way to die and SHE REFUSES. and cassian must be panicking because if she is hurt that pendant taako gave them both must be burning.
she touches the bracelet idly like she can turn it off. ]
We'll still need something to hold it there... [ oh, but she's got that. with and unhappy expression, she unclasps her holster, pulling her blaster free to pass it to finn. he can use that to keep his jacket secure against her bloody leg. ] Alright. Don't pull it out, push it the rest of the way through.
no subject
She is very much not allowed to die from a giant poison dart, let alone right here and now.
Finn accepts the holster, which well and truly should do the trick, more than anything in the "well maybe if we tie the sleeves and wish really hard" category was set to. He sets it next to his expertly bundled jacket where he won't lose track of it. He takes exactly one quick, steadying breath, because he's not the one with the leg dart and she's actively telling him what he can do that will help more than dragging her back to camp as-is. ]
Right. Count of three?
[ I mean spoilers, he's the exact type of person who goes on two when he says count of three. Jyn doesn't strike him as much of a count-of-x person, anyway. The important thing is that dart will be pushed through and out within ten seconds of his question. It's not exactly a yeet qualifier. More like a very desperate cool cool cool cool cool cool cool no doubt qualifier. Bonding moments. ]

maybe they should have pulled it out, she thinks once it's free and the pain rushes to her leg from the pressure finn applies. she told him not to but maybe pushing it through only served to push more poison into her blood stream. since she doesn't immediately pass out or die, she doesn't think this train of thought is necessary to reveal to finn at present time. either way it is out and that is the point! ]
Good job, team. [ the murmur is only threaded through with pain, so at least there is that. ] You'll make a lovely nurse, Finn.
[ excellent bedside manner. ]
no subject
I'm not made for nursing.
[ But he'll admit that the steady hands are a big help at this exact moment. ]
no subject
[ it turns out that jyn, who is by nature the opposite of loquacious, finds that talking makes it easier to block out the pain that is radiating up her leg. it is probably not very reassuring to finn to have even the most basic of Fact turned upside down like that, but here they are. ]
Saw used to say that if you knew how to fix someone, you know how to hurt them. The opposite should be true. Know how to injure someone, you should know how to heal them.
[ it's how jyn learned her first aid, through the lens of how to best injure someone -- how to injure them to the point that first aid became something of a lost cause, a shot of pain meds so they wouldn't be in pain when they died but no real wasted effort expended to trying fruitlessly to heal them.
it's not every eight year old's first aid education, but she feels no embarrassment in giving finn the small morsel. he didn't have every eight year old's education, either. ]
no subject
Unless she's delirious. Is this Jyn when she's delirious? He's never hung out with her while she was conveniently delirious from something. At least the plan to get her back to camp ASAP can't get more urgent than it already was. ]
They covered a couple of the basics with us. Not much. It's objective-first. In simulations or in the field. If something like this happened, you'd, uh. You'd get left wherever you went down.
[ Plenty more where one soldier came from.
Finn pauses, all the better to by this point triple-check his makeshift wrapping job. He makes a face. So help him if this dumb thing doesn't hold up for the slow limp back to relative safety. ]
I never thought about healing. Guess I didn't know I could.
[ It's not a bad thought. He knows more now than he used to. He knows more in the past five minutes than he used to, probably. But he does hate Stress. Shoutout to Jumanji for starting the shitstorm regardless. ]
no subject
I would never leave you behind.
[ and he hasn't left her so already the progress is excellent. look at them. sharing and caring. her hand drops, but only to grip his arm instead, giving it a light squeeze as her weight shifts like she is getting ready to stand up. ]
Alright, let's go. This poison is turning me into a kriffin' chump.
no subject
That sentiment is in some ways more concerning than the actual bleeding she's doing? There's a moment of verifiable alarm for it, because that's not how Jyn does. Finn is touched, obviously. That's his nature. In the context of the fact-sharing, it's a really nice thing for someone to tell him.
Still, the thanks he sends up to... the Force or something, whatever, when she gets herself back on track, is very real and very heartfelt. She didn't pass out after saying something very nice and meaningful! It was a real concern! ]
Oh, is poison all it takes? [ Letting Jyn push herself all the way back up is not in his rolodex of current plans, so he instead offers all the support he can to help her lever her way along on this quest. ]
Get an arm around my neck. We'll make it back in no time.
[ It's all bluster but the bluster means he's found that elusive 1% of chill that he misplaced. ]
no subject
rude of him to be roughly the same height as almost every man in her life what is this brolluminati bullshit. seriously: cassian, bodhi, chirrut, hadder, poe, finn... only baze and k2 and her dads bucked the trend. that's not cool. no wonder she is so grumpy all the time.
also there is a trend with all those boys, don't look too deep into it. ]
I didn't even tell Cassian and we died. [ finn is #1 ]
no subject
It's not the most graceful arrangement. Finn can acknowledge that. But even fumbling, graceless progress is better than no progress. The farther they are from dart town, the better. All that's left is keeping an eye on their surroundings as they start their badly-timed three legged race practice, and Finn is happy to say he's exactly keyed up enough to be doing that. There isn't a ton else he can do to ensure it's a smoother stroll to camp. ]
So you're saying I'm special. [ Oh Jyn u flatterer. You beautiful rule-breaking moth. It's a hell of a time for it. ] Is it gonna be my job to keep you from telling Cassian he's special today? Until you get done being poisoned. Because I can't make any promises.
