I. Cafe [Shiro had been too much of recluse recently. He was aware of this. Those memories of what had happened to him had gotten to him more than he could accurately point out. Even though he had been doing stuff, it had taken longer than he had thought to get it out of his head.
Well now he needed to. He had gotten up early to work out, movement always helping to clear his mind. It was even earlier than he normally got up, but he hadn't slept well to begin with so it wasn't unexpected.
It also wasn't unexpected that he started to run out of energy in the middle of the day. He normally didn't... but he needed some coffee.
So he headed to the coffee shop. Stepping inside, he paused, looking up at the options]
II. Out for a run [Now that Shiro had adopted a dog, he apparently had a new early morning exercise partner. Youta didn't really care when he got up very early getting ready to work out and had even tried to follow him out. After trying, rather unsuccessfully to get out the door, he had decided to take Youta with him on his run.
Putting on the dog's leash, he had taken him out, making a run around Quarantine. If he came across people, he would stop to chat or they'd eventually find him sitting on one of the benches with Youta flopped over beside him, head resting against his leg.
[His schedule is a strange one these days, but he'll be found behind the counter today, cleaning a mug from a previous customer. The door opens and he directs his limited gaze over toward the man, smiling pleasantly.]
[That voice get the recognition going. There's what he remembered, and suddenly his grin is a little wider.]
So it has, so it has! Well now, what I'd recommend depends on your tastes. I'm afraid I'm not much help if you're a coffee lover, but I've had my share of the tea we sell and I've got a few in mind.
We, is it? [He didn't know that had been Shiro's first steps into Riverview as well. Then again, he hadn't spoken with the man since, and it was hard to say. They barely knew each other.] Not quite happy anniversary yet, then, but give us a few more months.
[He turned and gestured at the menu posted overhead on a wall behind the cashier's stand, one he couldn't read but knew well enough anyway.] My favorite up there is still a debate between the chamomile and a sweet green tea we sell, but the earl grey reminds me of home. I'll take it on a day I'm feeling up to London's streets again. The chai is interesting, but I'll have to be in a mood for it. Anything you're particular for?
[Shiro shrugged] It seemed like we had arrived around the same time based on the conversation we did have.
[At the gesture, Shiro turned and glanced at the wall behind Undertaker, taking a moment to debate the options. It didn’t take long for him to come to a conclusion]
I’m kind of partial to green tea, but the earl grey sounds like it might be interesting as well. I'll try that one.
[It had been a few days since he had met Marinette while out rescuing animals. He had bounced the idea around in his mind for a while, but he had finally come to a conclusion: he wanted to adopt that dog.
So he had told Keith that morning a very vague comment that they were going to have a new family member moving into the house before he went out, heading back to the shelter. Lucky him, the same dog was still there, all cleaned up and fed and still remembering him as the person who had randomly given him treats. So the dog happily came over to him, tail wagging.
Of course the dog was coming home with him. He'd already decided that. He had also decided on the name "Youta" the previous night while trying to get to sleep.
The shelter gave Shiro enough to start with including a basic collar and lead, bedding, and food. He would have to get more, but first he wanted to take Youta home to see how he got along with the other, larger residents of the house. He wasn't worried about how the lions would behave after having seen Black with the cat earlier, but they were quite intimidating and he didn't want cause the animal undue stress being around them. It was better to find out early if there was a problem.
As he returned to the house, he went to the front door, mainly because he was assured Black wouldn't come out that way to see what he was doing, and stepped inside. Youta, still a young and curious dog, looked around eagerly, sniffing the area of the house they had just walked into. Well, at least there wasn't a large crowd waiting for them. The lions were out of sight at the moment]
[Keith was up in his room, but the door was open. He'd picked up a little portable video game thing to play with and was fiddling around with a game on that. He was still waiting to get the stitches out of his leg from his fight with Ivar, so it was light duty for a while with the Guard and no training.
He was bored, though it wouldn't be much longer. He was due to get it looked at again soon anyway.
Red was "sleeping" on the floor, almost under the desk that was under Keith's loft bed. She was a little too big to squeeze under it completely and definitely too heavy to climb up into the bed, so she usually stayed down there. The small cat that had followed Keith home the day of the fight, though... she was curled up at the foot of the bed, right at the top of the bed's steps.]
[Shiro wasn't surprised he was upstairs. It was more comfortable and less attempting the stairs with his injury. It wasn't severe but it was enough that he had been told by someone other than Shiro to take it easy. Shiro had told him that then the Guard had too.
The no training part had to be killing him because he was normally active.
Given that he was upstairs, Red was probably with him. Also that cat. What had he named that cat even?
Black seemed to have been the least concerned with small fuzzy animals so far though a hyper young dog was different than a determined cat. Would "canine lion interaction" be different than "feline lion interaction"? Not mention how the cat would react to a dog in the house]
I'll be right up.
[Still keeping Youta on a leash, Shiro headed for the stairs. Black peeked out from the kitchen, watching the new creature that Shiro had brought in (which different than the other one). Black luckily stayed back for the moment, watching as Shiro started up the stairs with Youta. The dog happily bounded up, either unconcerned or blissfully unaware of the giant black robot watching him. A short walk to Keith's room and Shiro stopped in the door way, loosening the leash just enough for Youta be able to step into Keith's room ahead of him and look around. Considering he didn't know where the cat would be and it was Keith's room, he didn't want to let Youta just run in.
Also there was a rather large red lion within eyesight and while he didn't think Red would care too much, Youta might]
Remember when I said we might have someone else move in? Well, this might be our new roommate.
[He had also found out the hard way already that doing something stupid could pull at the stitches, and that hurt. So, he was trying really hard to wait this out. It was crazy difficult, and the pent up energy was fraying his nerves.
Keith sighed heavily, getting his game to a point where he could save it and put it aside before Shiro came in the room. He sat up as he heard Shiro get close, tucking his legs under himself and leaning forward on the rail of his bed.
When he moved, Red's eyes started to glow again, indicating she was "waking up", and she lifted her head to stare at the new small fuzzy creature that had just entered. Keith raised an eyebrow.]
A dog?
[So far, the cat seemed less than interested, her head still tucked under herself where she was curled up in a ball.]
[Youta had heard Keith speak, but was distracted from looking for him by Red moving. Whoa! Big kitty! Youta stretched to the end of his leash, sniffing in Red's direction as he tried to figure out what she was]
I helped Marinette catch this guy and his friend. He seemed to have gotten rather attached to me so I thought I'd see if we could give him a home.
[Yeah right, "the dog had gotten attached to Shiro". Shiro probably wouldn't have even given a second thought if he hadn't had some attachment to the dog since it had been at a shelter that would have taken care of it.
Besides, look! The markings make it look like Youta has eyebrows!]
I wanted to see if he got along with everyone in the house first.
[Well, wouldn't you know it that Hana had happened to get a dog around the same time that Shiro had picked up Youta. As soon as she had found out, she had immediately said they needed to do a playdate for the dogs.
Of course who was Shiro to deny that. Youta needed to have friends to hang out with after all right? Black and Red weren't bad companions, but they couldn't really play with the young dog. Besides he liked spending time with Hana as well.
So this evening, he had gotten some things together so they could eat while letting the dogs play and do something on their own. Keith had gone out - possibly with his girlfriend - but Shiro wasn't too concerned where he had ended up.
As he was getting out some drinks, Youta stretched up with front feet against the island trying to see what Shiro was doing, there was a knock at the door, startling Youta]
It's okay, Youta.
[Shiro said this as he went to answer the door, Black "waking up" from his position by the far wall, eyes beginning to glow again]
[ Hana knew that a lot of people did end up adopting animals last month during that festival - but somehow, with two robotic lions already around, she hadn't thought that Shiro would get one, too. After she'd learned about it and then thought about it, though, it started to make sense. Shiro definitely struck her as a dog person, and -
a dog would probably help with his stress, just like Pacchan was helping with hers.
It was Hana that suggested that they could watch some movies that night, too, after the dogs got introduced to each other. After completing the maze at the Hygge festival she received a copy of the movie she'd starred in at home and it felt a little random, given that she knew other people were getting more... sentimental things. But after rewatching it, Hana was filled with fond memories of filming and getting to do something completely different from both gaming and piloting - so she supposed that was why it was her 'sentimenta' present. Now she wanted to share it with Shiro, along with some other movies. Why not?
Hana asked Pacchan to sit as they waited for someone to answer the door. Obedience was still a work in progress, but definitely going somewhere. When Shiro would open the door, she'd smile and wave. ]
Hiya, Takashi! Say hi, Pacchan.
[ Pacchan's way of saying hi was apparently to break from her sit and hop up onto her hind legs to try and get pets from this new human! ]
[That may have been part of it. A dog was good therapy, wanting to play and snuggle. The lions were sympathetic, but they were just too much in their paladin's head. It was almost like having another person than the unconditional love of a pet.
He opened the door and was almost immediately greeted by the smaller dog bouncing on its hind legs wanting attention from the stranger. He smiled, crouching to pet the dog on the head]
Hello, Hana. And hello to you too, Pacchan.
[He stepped back from petting the dog, holding the door open for them]
Come on in. Youta, come say hello.
[Youta came over, peering over at them. More peoples?]
[ When Youta made his appearance, Pacchan was immediately interested, and she went about sniffing the puppy for the dog equivalent of a human handshake. Introductions over, Pacchan kept bouncing on her legs, this time at the young puppy, her tail wagging in excitement - she wants to play!
Hana, meanwhile, steppe closer to Shiro and tried to go for a half-hug with one arm - since the other was preoccupied with holding Pacchan on her leash - as she stepped into the house. ]
Thanks for inviting us over. It's good to see you!
[Oh look another dog! Youta was very happy about this, sniffing with his tail wagging enthusiastically. If there had been lamp nearby he might have knocked it over with that wagging tail. When Pacchan started bouncing, Youta crouched down in play bow. Youta wanted to play!
Shiro gave her a one armed hug as well, smiling]
No problem. Why don't her off the leash so they can play.
[Black seemed to understand that these organic creatures were fragile and pretty much spent more time observing them so even though Black was "awake", Shiro wasn't concerned]
[ Hana's expression melted into something completely gushy when she saw how Youta and Pacchan seemed to already get along. How adorable! ]
Awww.
[ He didn't need to tell her twice, though, because she was already pulling away from him and leaning over so she could take the leash off of Pacchan's collar, effectively freeing the pups to play. ]
There you go! Be nice to Youta, okay Pacchan?
[ Hana then looked around until she found Black, ever so majestic in that corner of his. She waved at the lion. ]
[Immediately after the events that had occurred a little over a month ago, Black had practically been attached at the hip to Shiro. He'd been having a bad time and the lion had known he needed the support. Now that Shiro was mentally in a better place again, Black now spent more of his time at the house, acting as a security system and looking after their paladins' new tiny charges.
Today, Shiro had decided to bring Black along with him. There was yet another festival going on and the lion should see it as well. Not that the lion would be overly enthusiastic about it, but they did seem to be curious about things in their new world and this was sort of diplomatic opportunity, giving Black the chance to meet other people here. Also Shiro was curious what Black would think of the festival's activities.
They were still wandering through the city on the way to the festival, Black paused, looking up at the sky, Shiro stopping beside him]
[What she is probably looking at is the small assassin that is very much looking at her. The mechanics of the sleek robot mixed with the power of a jungle cat and it was just... the perfect mix of animal meets machine.]
That... did you make this? I can't even hear a motor, how did you do that? Is it an AI? [He says, stepping closer, but not yet crowding the magnificent looking piece of machinery. He just-- He just had to have a closer look!]
Don't say it's magic. [He really hated magic. It was just a lawless unfair life hacker. Machines and science though? They could be studied and understood. They had laws.
[Yep, Black was looking at the young kid who was walking over, tail twitching as he watched him. Shiro was used to people being curious about the lions so as long as the lion didn't have a problem with someone they didn't know walking up to them, he said nothing. Black didn't seem concerned at least]
Sadly, I didn't make Black. I'm just the pilot... well if Black were full-sized. Black is essentially an AI. At full-size, he didn't move as much but was able to think about situations. Here, they move around as if they were animals.
Unfortunately, there is a lot about them we don't understand. I wouldn't call it magic, but they have an ability to create a bond with their paladin. It's what they are made with I think.
[Damian was taking in every bit of Shiro's jargon because this machine was pure perfection. It was a hybrid of his two true loves in life. Animals and machinery.]
You mean he could be bigger? And you pilot him? And there is more than one?! [Why does this just keep sounding better and better?!]
Made with? What are they made of? [If not magic then maybe Alien tech? Futuristic materials? He had met a girl that was from the late 2000s after all, who knew when or where this guy was from. He stares at the creature as he stalks around his pilot, the moments as perfect and fluid as a living jungle cat. The small teen tentatively reaches a hand out towards it.]
He's supposed to be bigger. If he was full sized, I wouldn't even reach the top of his claw. [Biiiiiig kitty] I am. The lions form a bond with one person who is their paladin. The paladin pilots them and can also hear thoughts from their lion, like it is coaching them.
There are five. Black is the largest of the five. We also have Red, which one of the two smallest. We're missing Blue, Green and Yellow and their paladins.
[Shiro glanced at Black, whose gaze turned to him before leaning over slightly and carefully bumping his shoulder. Might have seemed like a strange exchange. Even stranger when Shiro turned back to Damian with an answer]
The nearest I can tell is it seems like it was some rock in space... an asteroid or a comet. The most I've been able to tell it was a joint effort between the Alteans and the Galra to build the lions. I don't have much in the way of specifics because its what Black tells me.
[Damian looks back up at the man and tilts his head. Actually, he thinks he might've seen the Red one on a video...]
Red... I think I've seen that one before actually. [So that's what they were and he watches that silently little exchange.]
...Was he just talking to you? [The robot could talk into people's heads? This was getting more and more interesting, but the alien tech was sounding more and more likely.]
Open
