( closed ) how about you and me
who: Jim Kirk & Leonard McCoy
what: a failed dinner date surprise
when: now
where: their place, shared housing
warnings: gross domesticity, probably some smooching and general self-indulgent shippy stuff. will update if need be!
All in all, Jim had liked the flower festival a little more. Granted, he'd still been getting used to life in Riverview then, but the mood in general had been livelier and more festive. Not that people were in any way sadder or more unpleasant, but there was definitely a lingering feeling of grief and loss that just didn't sit well with him.
Most of the aspects weren't really up his alley, so he skipped on a lot of it. He accepted any lanterns only so he wouldn't be rude, but he didn't share any stories, he didn't hang any lanterns. He was honestly debating on whether to send a single lantern down the river in a few days, but he had time. Until then? There was one tradition he could get behind, at least.
Or... well, try his best, anyway. Because cooking really wasn't a strong suit of his.
He organized himself so that, hopefully, it wouldn't be too disastrous. Choosing a recipe: check. Buying ingredients: check. Getting some little decorative items just to set the mood: check. Oh, and a cute fancy apron (fundamental, clearly): check.
It all seemed fairly straightforward. He set up the table for two, simple but with a couple of candles and a small jar with flowers, the rest of the flat tidied up to near perfection. And it would've been perfection if it weren't for the fact that halfway through keeping an eye on the meat roasting in the oven, he let the rice burn and stick to the bottom of the cooking pot, and by the time he took care of that there was an even stronger smell of something burning in the air. He opened the oven and— ah. Great. A curtain of smoke right into his face that quickly enough spread through the rest of the flat.
Windows open, Jim was currently using a kitchen cloth to force the smoke out, looking a bit like a mess from having to deal with the disaster of his cooking attempt. Bones shouldn't be back so soon, though, so he could still try to get them takeout. Wouldn't be as special, but it'd have to do— and that way Bones wouldn't have to see the complete mess Jim had made of the kitchen, or the charred roadkill that should've been their dinner.

But since he started living with Jim and just being with him, he noticed it more and made a face as he smelled at his shoulder with a sigh. Not like he could get rid of it at the hospital, so he just had to wait till he got back to their shared home. An arrival that came a little early today after finishing his rounds early and no more appointments were slated. Maybe he wanted to leave early at that cause, well... the mood was a bit stifling with all of the somber activities and what each one meant to the people there.
What he hadn't expected was to open the apartment door to the smell of burning food or a sudden puff of smoke. Blinking a few times, he moved inside, dropping his things by the door as he closed it so he could hurry inside to the kitchen to see what could possibly be on fire. Only, what he found had him standing there looking a little stunned to say the least. His mouth opened a few times, trying to work out the words to say before he crossed an arm over his chest to catch his elbow while the other hand moved to cover the smile pulling at his lips.
Between the mess and the look of Jim in that ridiculous apron, it was too much and way too fucking adorable to not nearly laugh at the spectacle in fond amusement. Leaning against the wall, he arched a brow and just watched him a moment before clearing his throat. "You fought the stove and the stove won?"

Whirling around suddenly, he stared wide-eyed at Bones, holding the kitchen cloth in one hand and wearing an oven mitt on the other. A single strand of hair was standing up into a ridiculous and comical curl upwards into the air, which probably only made him look even sillier.
"You're early," he started by stating the obvious, because that needed clarifying. Of course. Holding his breath for a moment, he finally let it go with a groan, lifting up his hand wearing the mitt to cover his face. "...it was supposed to be a surprise."
'Supposed' being the keyword here.
no subject
Moving to Jim, he reached out and softly slipped his fingers through his best friend's hair to smooth that wild lock. Letting his fingers drift down, he traced the side of Jim's face and finally pulled his hand away. "It's still a pleasant surprise, darlin'."
Turning away, he moved into the kitchen looking about curiously and tallying 'what went wrong' before turning to look back at Jim. Holding his hands out, he curled his fingers to beckon Jim back to him. "What other food did you pick up when you went shopping today, sweetheart?"
no subject
He figured Bones wouldn't be upset, obviously, but Jim was, and also a little frustrated that even with the recipe he couldn't manage a damn meal. Seriously, how hard can cooking be? He captained a starship, for crying out loud. Still, he let it go with a sigh, shoulders relaxing at the brush of fingers through his hair.
Taking off the oven mitt, he dropped it onto the counter, then stepped closer once Bones gestured towards him. His hands slid up Bones's arms, then Jim curled his own around his neck, leaning in for a quick kiss. Only because he hadn't gotten one today yet and that just had to be fixed.
"Not much. Just what it said on the recipe. Didn't want to go wild on the groceries, since that's more in your wheelhouse." Not that Jim slacked when it came to helping around, but when it came to grocery shopping, he never did it alone. Before tonight he didn't even know what went into cooking rice. (It was arguable whether he even knew now or not, considering the complete disastrous result currently stuck to the bottom of the pan.)
no subject
For him.
Damn but that hit like a ton of bricks when he thought of it that way. It made Jim even more attractive in the mess of it all as he relented and slipped into his arms. Easily winding his arms about Jim's waist, he slipped one hand up his back to softly knead at the back of his neck as he returned that quick kiss. It felt surreal in a lot of ways. Like something of an anomaly, but he loved it. It felt like finally honest to god coming home. After all, it wasn't the place, but the person. It always had been for him.
"Efficient." He murmured the words softly into Jim's hair as he kissed into it softly. "Sounds like you." Leaning back against the counter, he let his eyes drift over the 'damage' and noted which sources of smoke likely upset Jim the most. Which left him with an open pot of rice and the meat that looked a bit charred around the edges. He started to tally off things he'd already bought before leaning his head against Jim's. "I think I still have some vegetables we can steam, and I think we could pull out the rice that's not on the bottom and make it work." If that failed, they could just make more.
Turning his head finally, he nudged the blonde's cheek with his nose. "We can likely see if there is anything we can get out of either before we call it a lost cause, alright? Want to give it a try?"
no subject
Also it was a good opportunity to spring a surprise date on him, because Jim could be romantic too, when he wanted to be. Except for the minor flaw in his plan that he couldn't cook worth shit.
"That the new word for lazy, hm? Efficient?" Jim sounded neither upset nor serious, his lips quirking into a smile as he raised an eyebrow at Bones. Following the doctor's gaze, he glanced over his failed cooking attempt, wincing slightly at first, only to raise his eyebrows in surprise at Bones's words.
"Really?" Wouldn't it be too dry, or taste like burnt food? Jim wasn't feeling particularly confident about trying to salvage the food, and it showed in his face. Still, Bones likely knew better than he did, so he shrugged. "Sure. Can't possibly make it worse, I guess."
no subject
God, he would never get used to being allowed to do that. And honestly, right then, he was a damn mess of butterflies over what Jim had been tryin' to do. Sliding his hands down Jim's shoulders to cup his elbows, he arched a brow at him. "As long as it's not burned all the way through, we can trim off the burnt parts. Maybe be a little dry, but we can get around that in other ways."
Tapping against his elbows with his fingertips, he leaned in to touch their foreheads. "And if I steam some vegetables, add a little water to the rice that's not scorched, we could put the vegetables over the rice. If you're feeling adventurous, we can even make a cheese sauce to drizzle over it."
His hands dropped from their place to rest on Jim's hips for just a moment before he started to pull away. "Pending on the kind of meat you made, we could even just stir fry it together with the vegetables and put it over rice. So... we'll just be creative and you tell me what sounds better."
no subject
He also enjoyed the closeness a lot, and evidently wasn't in a particular rush to pull away from Bones. If anything, he kind of wanted to stay just like this and kiss for a good while, but he had to remind himself that he had had a plan for tonight, and despite the setbacks so far, that plan wasn't yet completely ruined.
So, though his hands curled into Bones's upper arms and clung there for as long as possible, he eventually let go once Bones pulled away. "Mm, cheese sauce... yeah, that sounds good," he nodded, hand brushing briefly across Bones's side, dropping from his waist right after he pressed a quick kiss to the doctor's nape. Okay, done, he was definitely done now. "Mixing it all together, too. That'd probably work, I mean— you're the chef here. Sounds delicious either way."
no subject
He sent Jim an amused grin, and with a wink he stepped back and moved to the rice so Jim could do as he asked. Carefully moving the rice that wasn't scorched to the bottom into a bowl, he managed to save a good bit of it before dumping the burned part into the trash. "Rice can be tricky, and I'm pretty sure I've always managed to brown at least some to the bottom. Honestly, I think what pot you use has a lot to do with it." In all truth, he wasn't surprised it happened when Jim tried to do more than one thing at once. Even he did that once in a while.
Once he set that aside to fix later, he shifted behind Jim and dipped his head to rest his chin on his shoulder, hands sliding down his biceps softly. "Ready to do some carving, captain?" Pausing a moment, he decided he knew Jim could easily do this himself, but he wanted to stay close a moment. Touch him and well, stay in his space. Which was why his hand slid down over his forearms till they curled around his hands lightly. "Mind if I help?"
That time the words were said softly just behind the other man's ear just before he kissed the skin there. "Unless you'd rather be time efficient and I work on something else right now?"
no subject
He wasn't quite expecting for Bones to get him to do it himself, though. Not that Jim couldn't, mind. With a simple explanation he probably could do it just fine on his own, but he wasn't about to tell Bones to step back either, even if he didn't quite need that kind of guidance. He liked Bones standing that close to him, and goosebumps flared up his arms at just the slow brush of hands down to his own wrists.
"No, I think... I really could use your help right now," he threw over his shoulder with a smile, body easing back against Bones's. Lies, of course. He could perfectly do it on his own, but no, he didn't particularly feel like being time efficient right now. He figured Bones wasn't in any rush either, so.

Leaning a little closer, he scooped up the knife and pressed it into Jim’s hand before moving to curl his fingers over Jim’s carefully. Nothing about how he moved was hurried. Everything moved more at a sweet sedate pace as his other hand moved to guide Jim’s to move the food into position to start trimming the charred parts off. He worked to keep the process precise, sure, but he more focused on the feeling of Jim under his hands and against his body.
After they made it through most of the meat, he tipped his head to rest it against the side of his. “You know, the main reason I wanted to get home earlier was cause I knew you were here and it was just silly to stick around at an empty hospital when I could be here. Probably silly, isn’t it?” But even on the ship unless he had piles of reports to do, he found ways to go see Jim. Whether on the bridge or irritating him in his quarters. It was just what he had to do to spend time with him when the captain’s duties ate up so much of Jim’s time. Not that his own work wasn’t a bit overwhelming most days.
Now just seemed different. Like he needed to work harder and make more time for Jim. But the dynamics changed, hadn’t they? “So what else did you do today? Anything interestin’?”
no subject
Bones's closeness felt nice, as did the warm touch of his hands on him, but it proved to be a little distracting, so Jim had to double down on his care and attention as he cut up the meat. An even worse way to ruin the night right now would be if he somehow managed to cut either himself or both of them by being more focused on the brush of Bones's fingertips across his wrist or over the back of his own than the motions of his hand and the way he handled that (very sharp) knife.
He ended up getting more sidetracked by Bones's words than his touches, though. Luckily they were practically finished, so he stopped for a moment so he could glance over his own shoulder, managing to get a glimpse of Bones's face and smiling at him. "No. No, I don't think it's silly at all." It was sweet, actually— not that he was particularly surprised at hearing Bones wanted to spend time with him. Jim felt much the same way himself. The change in their dynamics only really made him feel like he didn't have to hold himself back from expressing just how much he liked the doctor's company. And the nature of said company, of course.
"Not much. Pretty quiet day too, what with the celebrations." There weren't a lot of duties to see to at the Guard, and most natives seemed to be more focused on setting up lanterns and spending time with their loved ones than anything else, which actually worked pretty well for Jim. "Gave me some time to get things together. Even if I ruined it a little bit with the food, and you ruined it a little bit too by coming home early," he hummed playfully, more of a teasing poke at Bones than anything else. "Planning out a date is surprisingly a lot more difficult and time-consuming than I'd anticipated."
no subject
“Guess we’re just a ruined mess together. But long as we’re together, guess the mess is just fine.” He pointed out softly, a grin pulling at the corners of his lips as he let go of Jim’s hands to draw them in and splay them over Jim’s stomach a moment before wrapping his arms completely about his waist. “It can be, but if it helps… all I need for a date to be perfect with you is you, so you don’t really have to try too hard.” Though, the effort Jim made really did make a million butterflies explode in his stomach and chest almost making his breath hitch every time he thought about it. “But you know, this? Makes me really damn happy, mess or not.”
Hugging him a little tighter, he pressed another kiss to his neck then softly pinched Jim’s side. “Guess you better get that finished there and I’ll get the vegetables goin’.” Much as he wanted to just stay there and hold Jim like that, he also knew if he sat there like that, he likely wouldn’t get anything done. Not that it made him pull away from Jim any faster as he started to unwind his arms. “When you get it trimmed, put it in a pan and we’ll heat it up with some gravy and sauce to moisten it up.” By the next heating, it would likely make better sandwiches, but he could push it for this one meal for a typical dinner.
no subject
Not too hard necessarily. A lot of things felt effortless so far, when it came to Bones, and Jim rather liked that. He liked how easy all of it came to him, despite his admitted lack of experience when it came to something even a hint more serious than a brief fling or a casual hookup.
Pressing back against Bones, he suppressed the urge to complain when the doctor pulled away completely, and instead turned his attention to the meat again, finishing the work on it and getting it all into a pan like Bones told him to. He did nothing more than that, though, because gravies and sauces were out of his scope of knowledge and he didn't want to screw it up. He set the pan on the stove instead, leaving if off for now and making his way over to where Bones was preparing some vegetables, peering over his shoulder curiously.
no subject
Normally he would've just said thank you. Let Jim know in a subtler way he appreciated it. But thinking back at the look of frustration and disappointment he'd seen in Jim when he first walked in, he felt the man deserved more than that. After all, Jim making an effort for him meant more than he realized it would.
Shaking his head at himself as he finished chopping the vegetables, he put olive oil and water at the base of a pan before getting them ready to steam. Adding the seasoning as he felt Jim's chin on his shoulder, he smiled slowly. Sliding the pot closed, he moved it to the stove without breaking the contact with Jim. "Wanna learn how to make gravy and sauce or do you like your view from there?" Turning his head a little, he smiled at Jim warmly.
no subject
Which had him realizing something. He took off the apron, and instead tugged it down Bones's head, manoeuvring it a little so he could tie it around his waist. There, now he looked like the actual real cook he was.
"I can learn, but just so you know, I like the view too," he patted Bones's ass lightly, then took a spot next to him near the stove, keeping an eye on what he was doing.
no subject
"You know, if I didn't still smell like the hospital, I'd protest this brightly colored monstrosity." He didn't think it was that bad. But it was pretty bright and obnoxious. And only Jim of all people would buy it. He just wasn't sure if he got it for the shock value or cause he actually honest to god liked the thing.
He started to ask what view, but then he felt that hand on his ass and he couldn't help the very small jump in reaction. "Well, I don't know how you're lookin' at my ass while leanin' over my shoulder, but I call that some fancy multi-taskin' sweetheart."
Pausing as Jim moved away, he arched a brow before starting up the gravy at the stove. "You know, I'm not against you hovering. Kinda likin' you close like that if you want."
no subject
"All it takes is a bit of leaning back, really. It's not rocket science." He stayed close, but still didn't move too close. Part of him kind of wanted to wrap his arms around Bones's waist, but he knew that might hinder his movements, so he kept his arms and hands to himself, figuring they could be as cuddly as they wanted to later on.
no subject
Shaking his head, he went back to his task and worked at putting the gravy together. He wasn't the best at brown gravy, but his mama taught him right. So he kept at it before glancing back at Jim. "Hm... pop quiz later then." He paused purposely later before smirking. "On the gravy. Not my ass."
Chuckling to himself, he get it ready to simmer a bit while leaning over to get the items to melt the cheese and make a cheese sauce. He did a mental check list of the items cooking and checked each before going back to the sauces. "Did you have plans for after dinner?"
no subject
Nodding vaguely at the first comment, he rose his eyebrow and glanced at Bones, then burst out laughing at the unneeded, but still amusing, clarification. "Oh, that's good to know." Because he might just have gotten confused, of course. Pinching Bones's side, his laughter died down to a chuckle, and he let out a sigh at the question.
He had, actually... well, not planned, exactly. He'd had an idea. But it had seemed a little silly in the end, so he didn't include it in his dinner plan. So he just shook his head. "Not really, no. Figured we could do whatever you wanted."
no subject
Smiling a little too brightly, he ducked his head and kept his eyes on the stove. The smile was one that took over his entire features, crinkling the corners of his eyes and lighting them up. That only lit up more with the laugh as Jim pinched his side. Slapping at his hand playfully, he half turned to look at Jim quietly.
Arching a brow slowly, he caught that sigh and stayed silent a moment before looking back to the food. "What was it you wanted to do, Jim? Cause aside from stickin' close, I have no preference, but I think you look like you have a thought in mind."
no subject
Not that Jim really had any issues getting Bones naked whenever and wherever, mind. Something he'd been enjoying far too much as of late.
He held in a breath at Bones's question, finally lifting his shoulders in a shrug and smiling plainly at him. "It's a little silly, but also— a surprise. So I guess you'll just have to wait." And now he really would have to go through with it, whether it was a little too much or not.
no subject
Smiling in spite of himself, he tipped his head to look at Jim with an arched brow just as he finished the gravy to pour over the meat. "Guess I'll just have to tell ya if it's actually silly or not, later." Lifting the pot with the gravy, he drizzled the liquid over the meat in the other pan before covering it to start heating at a very low heat. Depositing the gravy pan in the sink to wash later, he checked on the cheese sauce before also glancing at the time to see how long it would be before the vegetables would be done enough.
In the mean time, he moved to Jim and leaned in between his legs lightly and tipped his head to kiss the line of his jaw softly. "But now you got me curious as to what it is you have in mind for after dinner."
no subject
"Well, try to let me down easy if you do think it's stupid." He had a feeling Bones wouldn't. It was probably right up Bones's alley anyway. Jim just wasn't very well-versed in romantic shows of affection, so all this was fairly new territory for him. Not particularly scary but still a hint intimidating, but let's face it, Jim always did love a challenge. Besides, this was Bones. The doctor would be the first to tell him if he was screwing up somehow, and Jim for one was comforted by that knowledge.
Smoothing his hands up Bones's arms, he curled his own loosely around his neck, tipping his head a little so Bones's face fitted against his jaw and the curve of his neck. "Guess you'll just have to be a little patient and wait for it. Think you can handle that?"
no subject
But that train of thought derailed when Jim made that request. Lifting a brow slowly, he gave him a careful look before leaning in closer and kissing Jim's temple. "Doubt I'll think it's stupid and you know I'd never hurt ya if I can help it." In fact, he'd try just about anything Jim suggested just to make sure the blonde was happy.
"Hey..." A smile pulled at his lips as one hand rose to slide through Jim's hair. Closing his eyes a little, he hummed a happy sound when Jim pressed his face into his neck. "Honestly? I waited years for you, so I guess I got the corner on the market on patience." Suddenly his eyes went big as those words left his mouth and he mentally cursed. He'd really not meant to say that out loud.
