( closed ) how about you and me
who: Jim Kirk & Leonard McCoy
what: a failed dinner date surprise
when: now
where: their place, shared housing
warnings: gross domesticity, probably some smooching and general self-indulgent shippy stuff. will update if need be!
All in all, Jim had liked the flower festival a little more. Granted, he'd still been getting used to life in Riverview then, but the mood in general had been livelier and more festive. Not that people were in any way sadder or more unpleasant, but there was definitely a lingering feeling of grief and loss that just didn't sit well with him.
Most of the aspects weren't really up his alley, so he skipped on a lot of it. He accepted any lanterns only so he wouldn't be rude, but he didn't share any stories, he didn't hang any lanterns. He was honestly debating on whether to send a single lantern down the river in a few days, but he had time. Until then? There was one tradition he could get behind, at least.
Or... well, try his best, anyway. Because cooking really wasn't a strong suit of his.
He organized himself so that, hopefully, it wouldn't be too disastrous. Choosing a recipe: check. Buying ingredients: check. Getting some little decorative items just to set the mood: check. Oh, and a cute fancy apron (fundamental, clearly): check.
It all seemed fairly straightforward. He set up the table for two, simple but with a couple of candles and a small jar with flowers, the rest of the flat tidied up to near perfection. And it would've been perfection if it weren't for the fact that halfway through keeping an eye on the meat roasting in the oven, he let the rice burn and stick to the bottom of the cooking pot, and by the time he took care of that there was an even stronger smell of something burning in the air. He opened the oven and— ah. Great. A curtain of smoke right into his face that quickly enough spread through the rest of the flat.
Windows open, Jim was currently using a kitchen cloth to force the smoke out, looking a bit like a mess from having to deal with the disaster of his cooking attempt. Bones shouldn't be back so soon, though, so he could still try to get them takeout. Wouldn't be as special, but it'd have to do— and that way Bones wouldn't have to see the complete mess Jim had made of the kitchen, or the charred roadkill that should've been their dinner.

When Jim shifted, the one arm still curled about his waist tightened and pulled him closer with a soft sound. Not that he was aiming to make it anymore sensual than it was, he just wanted him close. It was becoming quite the habit to drag Jim as close as possible.
And god, he could get used to that feeling of Jim's fingers in his hair and against his scalp. It sent shivers down his spine in a way that made him tangle his own a bit tighter in Jim's hair as he bit lightly on his lower lip. Letting the soft flesh slide from his teeth, he let out a soft contented sigh before touching their noses just barely before he kissed him again, softer this time, making the contact lingering and sweet.

But it was more than just physical too. Jim knew that, even if neither of them had brought that up yet. They just kept pushing at that line and seeing how far they could go, apparently, and so far neither of them had complained. Far from it, actually.
A small part of Jim wondered, though. Bones was a little more traditional and conventional than Jim was when it came to this sort of thing. Maybe he would prefer defining the relationship, but then Jim lacked the experience to know how to even bring that up, so he just... kept putting off that talk. Or just waiting for Bones to mention it himself.
But then knowing Bones, Jim should know that the doctor would worry too much about imposing or forcing Jim into anything he didn't want.
Humming in pleasant surprise at the bite, Jim curled his lips into a smile, returning the softer kiss as tenderly as he could manage. His hand slid down Bones's neck, thumb drawing along his jaw and down his throat, slipping just barely past the collar of his shirt and swiping across the skin there. This time around he was the one breaking the kiss, nipping playfully at Bones's nose.
"So how's that for dessert? Had enough yet?"
no subject
"Like I'd ever have enough, but I guess I'm tided over for the time bein'." That was the real problem wasn't it? He really had no idea what Jim wanted out of this. He knew he wouldn't be dropped aside like past dalliances, but that didn't mean Jim wanted this to be a lasting thing either. Well.. it felt like he did. But Leonard had wanted this long enough to know that he might be confusing his own desires into everything.
Problem was, he felt too damn scared to ask. Other than Jim's pointed evasion of relationships in the past, he also dealt with that sinking feeling that came with remembering how he'd not been good enough for that sort of thing the first time. And where he'd pulled enough away from Joce to not sting too horribly much, Jim was an entirely different story.
Releasing his face, his hands dropped down to rest loosely on the blonde's hips as he gave him a curious look. "I'll follow your lead." Didn't he always?

Stealing one last quick kiss, he moved to stand up, a bit reluctant to move away but not letting out even a sound of complaint. "Close your eyes for me," he asked, then once Bones did as he asked, he stepped away. Bones would be able to hear him fumble around for a little while, the soft dragging of the couch, a few mechanical sounds, then some soft music starting to play. The lyrics were simple and romantic, sang by a sweet and low voice.
After a few seconds Jim was tapping on Bones's shoulder, then holding out a hand towards him. The couch had been moved to the side just enough that there was a bit more room for them to move. "May I have this dance?"
no subject
His lashes lowered when Jim leaned in to kiss him and only sighed when Jim gave him that command. Closing his eyes completely, he arched his brow a little. "You really are goin' all out, aren't you?" He angled his head to hear what Jim was doing and well, maybe it was driving him a little crazy with curiosity.
Until that music started playing. It occurred to him in that moment just what Jim might be planning. At the tap to his shoulder, he blinked his eyes open and looked up at Jim again then to the hand offered to him. "You may." The doctor breathed those words as he slid his hand into Jim's and pushed to his feet. Really, honestly? If he looked at what Jim was doing, he knew this wasn't something Jim just did. It wasn't like him at all...
But he was doing it for him, and god, that made him love him more.
no subject
That tendency not to overthink and just do what he wanted, that at least was definitely something he'd do.
Fingers curling tighter around Bones's hand, he guided it to settle on his shoulder, his own dropping to Bones's waist while he caught the doctor's other hand and lifted it up just so. It wasn't some grand dance with complex steps or anything, so he just made sure to pull Bones close and start moving in very small and slow steps, as peaceful and quiet as the music playing right now.
no subject
Didn't he always follow Jim's lead? It came as naturally as breathing most days. Leaning just a little closer, he touched his temple to Jim's not quite completely touching, but enough. Letting his eyes fall closed, he knew he could just get lost in the movement and sound and just being that close to Jim.
But it did a number on his insides as they knotted up with flutters and flip flops that just made it hard to breathe quite right. "If you're tryin' to woo me James Kirk, it's workin'." He said the words soft, even if they were lighter and meant to be amused, they came out more honest than anything else.
no subject
He let out a chuckle at Bones's words, not really pulling away even to look at Bones. "Thought you were already successfully wooed before, doc." Well, sort of. And while wooing Bones hadn't been exactly what he had in mind doing all this, it was a nice perk. He just really wanted to do something nice for the doctor, Setting up a date himself seemed like the perfect way to show Bones that he was willing to put in some extra effort too, that it wasn't just a one-way street.
Moving Bones's hand and settling it on his chest, he let go of it so he could settle that hand on Bones's waist too, keeping him close. "This is nice."
no subject
Least he could do was answer that honestly. Not that he didn't try for Jocelyn. It just never worked out. And it never felt like this either. Tipping his head into Jim's he reveled int he warmth and proximity as he let out a soft sigh. Sliding his hand on the shoulder to the back of Jim's neck, the other splayed out over Jim's chest softly, pressing against the feeling of his heart. "Yeah, real nice."
Letting out a soft sigh, he had a feeling he could get far too used to this. Not just dancing, but the warmth and the closeness. It felt too good to be honest. "Jim, you know... I mean it when I say you're all I want, right? Guess want isn't really the right for it."
no subject
"Really? Kinda like that, I've got to admit," he smiled softly, turning his head just enough to catch a glimpse of the doctor's face. "It's nice to know we both still have some firsts to experience with each other." Even if he didn't think that was vital to a relationship, it was pretty exciting anyway. And Jim liked being able to surprise Bones like this, to be able to give him experiences he'd never had before.
"Yeah? And what would be the right word for it?" He said, both curious and teasing.
no subject
And he didn't know what could possibly make Jim switch gears from friendship to something like this. But maybe all the giving of himself and never walking away came to somethin'. Turning his head a little with Jim's he met his gaze for a second before his eyes lowered just slightly. "Well, I do prefer having somethings about me that surprise you. And to be honest, didn't think you'd ever do anything like this. It's pretty amazin'."
Biting into his lower lip a moment, he dropped his head down to rest his forehead on Jim's shoulder just a second. He didn't know if he should answer this question to be honest. Things were goin' well as they were. Did he really want to mess that up? "What word do you think I mean?"
no subject
Felt nicer that way, though. Knowing it was all spontaneous and a little thoughtless. Made it feel more genuine, like it really was what they both wanted. More than anything.
"You never had to win me over," he said with a hint of fondness, tipping his head down a little as he smiled in a way that, if one didn't know Jim, was almost shy. "You had me all along, Leonard McCoy."
Well, maybe not like this, but... honestly, it felt like such a natural step to their relationship, looking back now Jim couldn't say why they didn't get here sooner. Probably their jobs, in good part. Jim's own tendency to sleep around. The latter was no longer an issue, and the former was— well, not quite as relevant in this place. As much as Jim missed his friends, his crew and his ship, he was also grateful for the kind of personal freedom this place afforded him. Both of them, actually.
Jim tipped his head a little as he felt Bones press his forehead to his shoulder, raising an eyebrow curiously. Even if he did have a feeling he knew what Bones meant— and wasn't quite sure he knew how to handle that just yet. "Don't know, doc. If I did then I wouldn't ask."
no subject
In a good way. Especially when Jim went and said things like that and looked so ridiculously cute. Tipping his head a little, he brushed a soft kiss just below Jim's ear as a smile pulled at his lips. "Funny, it's about the same for me, too." Even if their first meeting he just wanted to patch the kid up and help him, it just naturally progressed one step at a time.
The hand still splayed against Jim's chest moved, softly curling his fingers around his neck so he could run the pad of his thumb along the line of Jim's pulse. Breathing in slowly, he finally lifted his own head to softly rest it against Jim's. Truth be told, he didn't know if he should say it. What if Jim didn't want to hear that just yet?
"Think maybe I'd better wait then." He felt a little light headed at that. Unsure. "Cause it doesn't matter Jim... Even if we weren't like this, I'd still be here. I'm not gonna leave you behind and I never will. You're my best friend and you always will be. But maybe I could say it this way... you're it for me."
no subject
But then that was why this was a unique kind of thing for the both of them. In different ways, of course. Bones had definitely done serious before. Too serious, probably. Regardless of his success rate, he was sure to have a hell of a lot more experience when it came to dates and the like. Jim, on the other hand, was just sort of winging it. Lucky for him, he was just naturally good at most everything he tried to do.
Curling his arms a little tighter around Bones, he pulled him closer, closing his eyes and turning his head so he could plant a warm, lingering kiss to his temple. He wasn't really sure what to say just then, but he did know he had to say something. Anything, really. Even if they ended up just dancing around the topic for now (pun not intended).
"Never thought I'd do anything like this either, you know? Thought it'd be... more difficult. Like there'd be expectations and letdowns and just... too much trouble than what it was worth. But with you, it's just... it's easy. It just feels natural and right," he shrugged lightly, pulling Bones along as he kept swaying to the music. "Guess that must mean you're it for me, too."
no subject
He'd just been brought up differently. Taught that there was just one person to spend his life with. Much like his ma did with his dad. He wanted that kind of love some much he'd jumped into the worst marriage even if it gave him his pride and joy in the end. So maybe it wasn't all for naught.
But this? This feeling of Jim's arms around him and the feeling of Jim's lips on his skin made him shiver softly. Pulling him closer, he knew it wasn't necessarily all that conducive to dancing, but they seemed to manage it alright. Lifting his head up, he turned to look at Jim leaning in close enough to nuzzle his cheek gently as he spoke those words.
"Guess it's easier to be close to your best friend." He remembered his ma once telling him to marry his best friend. He thought he had. Boy, had he been wrong. Even if Jim wasn't really promising him anything finite, he still smiled warmly, one hand sliding around to slide into his hair and cup the back of his head. "Wouldn't want you to do anything that didn't come natural... But I do know, you never gotta worry 'bout losing me. Not like that. Guess the only thing is that I have never been fond of sharin'. Think you can forgive an old fashioned idiot for that?"
no subject
But he was glad that there was an exception to that norm, just like with everything. He was also glad that Bones was that exception, for him. Even if at times he wasn't sure what was too much or too little, or if he was ready for a more serious conversation, or more deep and meaningful words.
To him, this was serious already. Serious enough that Jim didn't even think about getting involved with other people, or stopping now what they'd started. Which was why Bones's last words kind of caught him by surprise. Biting back the urge to ask whether it was even right to say they were just 'best friends' anymore, he knit his eyebrows a little at the rest instead, lips quirking and tone light even if he wasn't particularly amused by the implication.
"So what, you think I'd just go and sleep around anyway? I mean, I know I have a reputation, but," he trailed off, shrugging and pursing his lips. "Thought you knew me better than that. I don't want anyone else, and I'd never cheat on you."
no subject
And wow, he really did know how to make a mess.
Cause he wasn't sure about anything. Maybe it was ridiculous insecurities about himself, but he wasn't considering Jim's 'reputation' to be honest. More just the idea of Jim could possibly want to try something like this with him. "No, you wouldn't do that." His voice came out quiet, but not unsure. "Just wasn't sure I was..." Good enough for him? Probably, but he's not sayin' that kind of shit out loud. Not when Jim just made it pretty clear that wasn't the issue.
"'M Sorry." It was more a mumble, an admission that he'd fumbled that one. But he was a little stuck on that particular wording Jim used. "So... puttin' it that way, does that mean this is a relationship? Whole nine yards, with dating and gifts and showing up places together." God, that sounded ridiculous, but the smile was pulling at his lips before he could stop it. A stupid kind of hopeful smile. Especially when they'd already done most of that even without the official 'dating' attached to it.
no subject
"You're very silly sometimes, Bones," he said with all the fondness in the world, huffing a chuckle at Bones's question. "Thought we were doing all those things already," he hummed, though he knew what Bones meant. They could still very well be doing that and just keeping a strict 'friends with benefits' policy. But no, that hadn't been what Jim had had in mind, and he figured Bones wanted more than that too, himself.
Unwinding his arms from around Bones, he slid his hands up his front and tugged lightly at his shirt collar. "But yeah, I'd like that. Assuming you want that too."
no subject
Leaning back when Jim pulled away, he bit into his lower lip while focusing on the feeling of those hands sliding up his chest. His hands drifted down Jim's back, dropping until the caught the curve of his hips and squeezed softly. "Like you said Jim, I don't want or need anyone else."
And really, that word he couldn't quite say yet burned on his tongue, daring him to say it out loud. But he didn't. Even if he met Jim's eyes and all he could think was how goddamn much he loved him. And honestly, admitting that to himself was hard enough. A smile pulled at the corner of his lips, just as the corners of his eyes crinkled in that purely happy way that really, only Jim managed to drag out of him if not Joanna. He missed her like hell, but he wasn't mad about being here.
Not when he could look at Jim like this. "Swear to god, you've got me wrapped around your little finger, ya know that?"
no subject
They were barely dancing anymore at this point, he noted, so he set out to fix that. Sliding his hands down Bones's shoulders and arms, he caught the doctor's own hands, pulling back a little and tugging him along, trying to get him to do a little twirl.
"Mm, that's nice to know," Jim hummed with a smile, pulling Bones close again after that twirl and stealing a kiss from his lips.
no subject
His smile warmed all the more as he felt Jim moving him into a twirl. Something he let him do, but with no small amount of laughter. God, he didn't laugh enough. He attributed most of those moments to Jim though.
"Sure it is. Bet you're already wonderin' how to use it to your advantage." Well, he wouldn't lie if Jim asked, but he certainly hoped that were the case. Cause he trusted him with that even if there was a chance he shouldn't. Smiling against his lips, he returned that kiss before giving him a light grin. "See if you know this one..." He furrowed his brow in thought, calling up the words before speaking the words carefully trying not to mix in too much of his accent and mess it up. "Love is not love, which alters when it alteration finds, or bends with the remover to remove."
Ducking his head, he knew he walked that dangerous line when he used that word, even if it was part of a sonnet. "O no, it is an ever-fixed mark, that looks on tempests and is never shaken. And that... that is all I remember from it. But I figure with all them books you've read, you know that one." After all, even Leonard knew Shakespeare when he heard it.
no subject
"You make it sound so bad. You could get plenty out of me too, if you wanted to," he pointed out, raising a brow as Bones seemed to be deep in thought. His expression opened up in surprise as soon as Bones started reciting that sonnet, lips stretching to a small smile, then finally a grin as he chuckled at his last few words.
"It is the star to every wandering bark, whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken," he started slowly, picking up where Bones had left off with relative ease. "Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks within his bending sickle’s compass come; love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, but bears it out even to the edge of doom."
Curling his arms around Bones's neck, he stepped closer and kissed him, soft and lingering. "You are a damn gooey romantic."
no subject
What shouldn't have surprised the good doctor was him quoting the rest of that sonnet to him. Ducking his head, he laughed softly and shook his head. Of course he would know it. Lifting his head he let his eyes run over Jim's face a moment before arching a brow along with that amused smile. Amused and utterly melted to the goddamn core. Leave it to Jim to turn it back on him.
Leaning into that kiss, he wrapped his arms more around Jim's waist. "Yeah? You complainin' gorgeous?" Cause even if it was just a sonnet, it held more meanin' to the both of them than he wanted to really put into words. Even if Jim never said he loved him, the sentiment matched. And that was more than enough for him.
no subject
"No, not ever," he shook his head a little, nose bumping lightly against Bones. The doctor really could be a sap sometimes, but Jim couldn't imagine ever being bothered by it. Especially now. Canting his head, he pressed his lips to Bones's again, lingering in a softer and slower kiss this time around.
no subject
"Good to know. You have this knack of bringing it out in me." Smiling softly, he tipped his head to lean in closer till their lips were near touching. "Figure you're just gonna make it worse." He's full on smilin' by the time their lips touch in that kiss. Cause damn it, he knew that Jim would make him a fine mess if he kept up this kinda thing. Dinner and dancing'...
God, Jim was gonna spoil him rotten if that were the case.
