[OTA] A New World

Who: Draco Malfoyhp & OTA
What: Adjusting to the new Norm.
When: August 24th, evening. (Slgihtly Backdated)
Where: around the city.
Warnings: To be added as needed.

Draco's head swam with the new information. The welcoming, the video, the explanations. All of it. It boggled the mind. Stretched his ability to comprehend and adjust to its limit, threatening to break it. He had been given a room assignment and a job offer. He had hoped to retreat into solitude in order to collect himself... only to find he was sharing a flat with another. He'd stashed the broom he'd been riding when he'd come through the portal and what little things he'd been carrying and given.

Option A

Stepping outside of the communal housing Draco paused as he looked around, then down to the device resting in his hand. He'd been given some instruction on it, aide with setting up this Friendr... thing. But it was still largely a strange mystery. He didn't understand how it worked, and that was probably what bothered him the most. Sighing he shoved it into his pocket and looked around. Where to first?

Option B

Moving away from the communal building Draco just wandered. Letting his feet take him where they may. Turning when something struck his fancy. If he came upon an establishment that seemed open to the public than he stepped inside and peeked in. Looking at goods and services offered to try and see if they might offer things he'd need in the future.

[This option you can catch him wandering around or catch him inside one of the open to public businesses in town.]

Option C

After doing some wandering around the town Draco eventually stopped for a rest as the evening wore on. Finding a bench he stopped and took a seat. The walking had helped in some ways, but in others, it left him with more questions than answers. Still uncomfortable in this strange setting. Still very much on guard and watching his words so very carefully. It made him weary and he longed for solitude... yet he did not know if he would find it in his new residence being as he shared it with another.

Dorian was finding his new residence more and more to his liking. These 'modern' conveniences were fascinating and certainly useful, and his position at the Magical Research Institute provided him with enough mental occupation to keep his mind from wandering over much to what might lay beyond the wall. That wasn't to say the mage didn't want to explore, but only that he felt he had time in which to do so.

No, the Tevinter Altus made no assumptions of knowing everyone else who'd stepped from the portal, but he'd been here long enough by now to know one who'd done so recently. His path crossed Draco's as they wandered past a boutique advertising a new line of women's clothing. He plastered on his best friendly smile of greeting and inclined his head in the young man's direction.

"Begging your pardon, but this all," he illustrated what he spoke of by giving a wave of his hand around, "seems new to you. Have you, by chance, recently arrived?"

He hadn't had much occasion to help newcomers. It was almost exciting. That and the air of subtle meloncholy that seemed to gather about this lad was intriguing.

If Draco's momentary fascination with his physical appearance was noticed by Dorian, he made no indication of it. Of course, the mage was so used to people noticing exactly how handsome he is it went without question at this point. Still, he continued to smile, because when someone things you're attractive, you damn well appreciate it, accustomed to it or no.

He chuckled at Draco's response, waving a hand as though to dismiss the boy's concern. "Only marginally, and I have a good eye." Dorian took his offered hand. "A pleasure, Draco Malfoy." And he inclined his head in greeting as he returned the shake. "Dorian Pavus. A pleasure."

"A noble goal, to be sure." He nodded at the greeting. "But please, Dorian will suffice. 'Mister Pavus' has a lot of responsibility attached I'd rather avoid."

He chuckles as though he's jesting. Whether or not that's true is yet to be seen. Either way, he's not planning on saying anything else on the subject.

"And what is it you've found thus far?'

“Oh, certainly many things to be found around here beyond understanding, but intelligible, if you give them the time.”

There was one particular invention that had caught his attention quickly as he’d explored his communal quarters; a box that was cooled within to preserve foods for a longer amount of time. He’d quickly found himself envious he hadn’t thought of something similar himself.

“What sort of world is it you come from, then, Draco? There is far much more technological advancement here than on Thedas, though,” he taps his foot on the cement walkway beneath them, “we in the Tenvinter Imperium have also devised concrete. I’ve heard some worlds haven’t.” He chuckled. “A shame, really, but there are barbarians everywhere, aren’t there?”

Dorian crossed his arms, tapping his chin thoughtfully as he mulled over Draco's words. A world where the mages kept themselves separate from the non-magic inclined sounded slightly similar to his own home. Hunted, even more so, at least when compared with the south, where the mages were often cloistered away for 'their safety and the safety of others'. Even in his homeland of Tevinter, really, things weren't that dissimilar, only with differing effects.

"Mages in your world believe those born without magic are barbarians?" He chuckled at the thought. Why, all of Tevinter looked down upon the southern lands in the same light, but it occurred to him, the Altus and even the Laetans, those in Tevinter with magic, looked down on all those without it as inferior.

"I...suppose we have something in common. Many people, mages, in my homeland feel the same way about those without magic. Over the centuries, we've even given them false hope: one day you too could join the ruling class, provided someone in your family is born with magic." He scoffed, shaking his head. "Tragic, isn't it?"

"Witch is normally used as a derogatory term, usually referred to one who practices magic without guidance or instruction, those are usually wanted criminals." His comment was more to fill the void as he mulled over what Draco was telling him. They were segregated, certainly, and far more than even the mage-born of the Tevinter Imperium were from their own people.

He followed only well enough with the breeding, though. Dorian himself was the product of careful breeding, designed to ensure the next generation was powerful, noble, perfect in every way. He happened to be a bit of a disappointment. "Ah, yes. There are distinct classes in my own homeland. I come from the Altus, families of mages capable of tracing our pure bloodlines back to the original Dreamers, thousands of years ago. Then there are the Laetans, those of, well, 'impure' stock who happened to have been born with magic. Everyone else is Soporati. The common man."

She knew him from his Friendr picture though he looked a little more tense than the boy in that picture. She stepped lightly, her feet skimming across the sand as she stood next to Draco.

"Are you okay?"

Kate smiled at Draco. "I'm glad to hear that." She looked out at the ocean. "It's beautiful isn't it?" She had been walking when she spotted his figure heading towards the water. She'd leave if he asked her too but Kate didn't honestly like being alone.

"And-" She turned back to him. "-it's nice to meet you in person."
littlemisskate: (I know)

[personal profile] littlemisskate 2017-08-28 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Kate smiled at him. "Yes." She was flattered that he had remembered her name after their brief conversation.

"There is a lot about this world that is strange." Which was saying something after what Kate had been through. "I don't know about it's magic but there is a research facility that looks into it, the portal and the magic of other worlds." She didn't know all the details but she knew that the building existed and if Draco was looking for answers he might find them there.

"Can I ask about your own magic? What's it like?"
littlemisskate: (Guarded)

[personal profile] littlemisskate 2017-08-30 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Kate bobbed her head in a soft nod. "It seemed like something that might be useful for you." Really it'd be useful to anyone who used magic.

She looked thoughtful as she turned towards him. "The magic I'm used to is different. It's like ancient rituals that can turn night to day and open the way to some power well." She shivered at the memory of it. It had all been dark magic in her mind and it made her skin crawl thinking about it.

"I haven't seen anything with wands." Kate's understanding was that it was different between worlds. Those in her world didn't have to be born with magic to do these rituals.

Kate's eyes ran the length of the wand before looking back up at Draco. "I think it would be fine but I won't make you if you think it's unsafe." She was inclined to believe him. "This world is an accumulation of so many places and cultures. The concepts of physics appear to be the same but magic is something different. With the way, that everything here coexists… I can't think that anything bad will happen."

There was hope in Kate's voice. Nothing else in the world made her as stubbornly sure as hope did. When she had first arrived she thought that she'd lost that hope but it was still there. She continued to believe.

Kate looked at Draco with a warm smile. "Is there a place you'd like to see? I can show you around some." She had time to kill before heading to work.
littlemisskate: (Yeah?)

[personal profile] littlemisskate 2017-09-09 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Kate knew that this world was different but she couldn't help and see the similarities too. Gravity worked the same, as far as she knew Newton's laws were still relevant. Did magic even care about things like that? The magic that she's seen and performed had all been dark, involving blood and death. It wasn't something she was interested but since arriving in Quarantine she's seen more, brighter, magic at work.

Her expression softened as her chin dropped and her eyes looked down at her fingers. "Yes. That is true. It's wise of you to be careful." Her voice was soft but affectionate and kind.

"I'll leave you to rest then. If you need anything please let me know, okay."
