( closed ) lost research
who: Jim Kirk, Leonard McCoy, Peggy Carter, Re-L Mayer, Shai Ebbisaryn, Sans, Dick Grayson, Scott Lang, Yuuri Katsuki, Victor Nikiforov
what: a rescue mission
when: from May 15th through to the end of the month
where: abandoned area, along the river, the delta and the waterfalls; between the first and second walls
warnings: monster attacks, probably some injuries/blood, don't expect anything more than that; add any needed warnings on your own threads as needed, please!
Despite the risks, most of the journey was a fairly quiet one. A lot of hours walking, making their way along the riverside, trekking through the woods and across small clearings. When the sun set they'd set up camp somewhere, and as soon as it rose they got back to their feet and out towards the Delta underneath the waterfalls.
Jim made sure they had all they needed; maps, compasses, whatever devices that could help them navigate the terrain. As far as supplies went, they had plenty of covers and extra clothes to make sure they didn't suffer through the colder nights, but there were no luxuries out here. If it rained, they'd be mostly unprotected, and they could only shower and wash their clothes so long as they had the time and access to the stream of the river. There was plenty of food, hopefully enough to last them the round trip, but they also had a myriad of tools and weaponry needed for any hunting and scavenging so they didn't always have to consume from the food they'd brought along for the trip.
The creatures living out here were another concern, and on a journey this long, they were bound to run into something sooner or later. They should be packing enough weaponry to keep the team safe and everyone in one piece, though.
Hopefully, it would be worth it. Jim didn't even care if they didn't get their hands on any of that research— all he cared about was that there were people possibly lost and in danger out there, and he wanted to try and save them.
[ ooc: this is a mingle log, so everyone feel free to write up your own top levels and/or tag around as much as you like! ]

peggy carter » ota
[ a relic from the 40s, or not, it soon becomes clear that this is hardly the first time peggy carter had taken part of this manner of an expedition. It may take a moment for those who know her to recognize her as the curls and the heels are gone. the red lipstick and the sharp attitude are still in place, however.
sharpness aside, she would occasionally offer anyone who walks near a drink out of her bottle of water, not without a courteous nod. just try to shield her during the rain, however! any manner of offer of blankets or sympathy would be answered with a glare that would soon make it clear, this is not a woman that needs to be coddled.
and mind you, if you come upon her while she's disrobing for a quick bath, you'd get a huff and a very proper turn your back for a moment, would you? ]
[ she always volunteers for more than one watch.
a restless sleeper, she might yet join the one in charge of the night watch, even if it is not required of her, tossing a teabag into the little pot of boiling water over the small fire. ]
All quiet.
[ why she's here would become clear if they stumble across one of the beasts ( she so stubbornly refuses to call them monsters ). an attack would result in a quick reaction, a roll on a ground, kicks and hits that are nearly ferocious in nature.
it would always end in the same manner, whether she's standing or on the ground, there would be a bullet or two between the eyes and a skeptical: ]
Think it would be good for dinner at all?
[ anything else? ]
2
Yuuri looks up, surprised, when Peggy joins him by the fire.]
All quiet. [He agrees, glancing toward the edge of their camp, where a sword pokemon's floating quietly, ready to sound an alarm if it notices anything strange.] You couldn't sleep?

[ she is in her element here, for a change. her work in the police force is hardly dull but these sorts of missions remind her of the war, of her days alongside steve and his howling commandos. for once, she doesn't think back on with a sense of grief. so much has changed since she had learned he still lives.
She looks at the pokemon for a moment. ]
What is this?
no subject
[The sword pokemon gives a soft humming sound before falling silent again.] He's kind of a troublemaker, but it does feel...safer, having him help me keep watch.
no subject
[ but then - ]
I can't begrudge you, however, It does seem more useful than the normal pet. Does it hear what we're saying?
no subject
[He's just not going to mention the tribble that also came through the portal with him.]
All I know is, he's intelligent and he's got a personality just like any other companion.
no subject
[ the kind of questions she's asking, honestly. ]
You know, things like these are beyond even children's books in my world and time.
[ god knows what's going on in the 21st century. there's a lot she would believe, now. ]

[ She has to give Peggy at least a little credit - she's more able to let go of her make-up and predilection toward being put together. Re-L, however, isn't quite the same. Maybe it's the virtue of being so young or just.. a virtue of 'training' so to speak. There's an obsession with keeping up appearances, which means that even if they're hiking or in the rain, she'll be dressed and made up as if they're not out in the wilds.
Re-L has wandered off from camp to go ahead and get herself at least slightly cleaned up - washing her face to prevent typical teenage issues - the lot. She's not run in to anyone previously on these trips, but if it's Peggy -
There's less of an urge to buzz off immediately, at least. ]
It's Re-L. [ As if she's telling her she's fine from being oogled or something since it's her, fingers working in a practiced manner to peel away black clothing. Thankfully she's already not a fan of exposing her skin too long, with how damned pale she is, but gets to washing fairly fast, kneeling down on the river bank so as not to become a beacon for where they are. ]
I think the last time I was out on a desert planet was almost better than this delta, if I'm honest.

she pushes that braid over one shoulder, moist strands partially hiding the marks there, scars left by bullets, a trained eye could tell that easily enough. ]
No one else with you?
[ she seems to relax somewhat, enough to scrub dirt from her arms. ]
Only almost?
no subject
No. [ Her tone says more like a 'hell no', though, apparently having enough of group togetherness for the moment. Not entirely unusual for Re-L, though. She's usually a very solitary being, and having a little too much time around too many people exhausts what little parts of her are social to start with. One other woman, though, wasn't asking too much, and soon she's ditching her boots on the edge of the water.
Never one to be bashful in the first place dark clothing starts coming off of her and being tossed in to the river too in short order. At least down to what would be comfortably covered in a bikini - there's no nudist tendencies here, just a perhaps overly confident girl. ]
Here there is at least not sand in every possible crevice. I'm sure you can see how that's more convenient.

I wouldn't the end of it from Kirk, if he were here. Neither of us would.
[ the man has gone and accused her of breaking his heart. it's the sort of playful flirting that she's comfortable with. she likes the man well enough, really. ]
I certainly can. It's been quiet. What do you make of it?
no subject
How so? [ Of course she'd gone and nearly chewed Jim out over why robot sentience was a bad plan their very first meeting, so perhaps his banter with her seemed a little different. And well.. with McCoy being a mother hen at his worst concerning her it probably didn't help. She'd had enough discussions with the good doctor to know that he has a daughter her age and tries not to begrudge him when he defaults in to that 'fatherly' mode.
The key word being tries. ] He can't handle a little skin, then, I'm guessing?
[ She pauses to look a little pensive at Peggy's question, a non-committal hum all she comes up with as she's dunking her hair to at least freshen it up slightly, straight black hair quickly turning wavy as she does so. ]
Potentially it can mean that this will be an easy recovery mission. My gut tells me that it may mean trouble before the end of the day, though. Particularly since we're walking in largely blind as to why they've disappeared. [ But she shrugs, then, and adds her usual caveat : ]
There's also a chance that they just didn't want to study anymore and disappeared themselves. Anything is possible with scientist types.

[ he could have truly gave howard a run for his money in regard to being incredibly useful while also having far too many innuendos at hand. ]
They may have found more than they bargained for. Around these parts, that's not hard to believe. If they weren't prepared for it - if there is even a way to be prepared for this terrain. Not that many maps and books about this area.

2;
Somehow, she's not surprised that Peggy's the same. Shai makes room for her beside her at the fire, and gestures to the pot of tea she's put on for herself.]
Plenty to go around, sweetheart, if you're in the mood.
no subject
Tired at all?
[ she seems to be quite like peggy, ever vigilant, not ever fully-asleep. ]
no subject
Not the least. Night's lovely, no complaints for the company. One can sleep aplenty when they're dead.
[She sounds quite cheerful in the interim. She also doesn't need as much sleep as common folk, but that's a result of whatever genetic differences set her apart from humans.]
no subject
Cheerful as always.
[ but it's meant kindly. she warms her hands around the cup. ]
I never thanked you for your help with the lizard beasts.
no subject
Nothing more than what anyone else would've done in the same circumstance, but you're welcome, of course.
[She shifts, reaching for her own cup. It's gone cold, but she stirs it with a crackling blue construct spoon with electrical heat transfer and tadah, saves her having to warm it again.]
I'm very keen on the way you work. Poetry in motion, honestly.
[u punch gud, Peg. Of course, it's so normal to her to encounter women who are ferocious in combat that it doesn't even occur to her that it may be an oddity for Peggy's place and time. Sexism doesn't really exist where she's from, so it's just an honest appreciation of a fellow fighter.]

Clearly someone needs to get all #3 up in here
So what you're saying is that everything I've heard about British cooking is true.
[Because he ain't eatin' that, no matter how long it suffers a Proper English Boil.]
oh goodness :>
she arches an eyebrow at the dying beast, reaches for her gun and finished both the job and its pain. ]
So spoiled. It's just an animal, oddly-looking as it is. Something will eat it, if not us.
Cultural sensitivity ftw
Look, all I'm saying is I had my share of mystery meat back in San Quentin.
And something sure can eat it if it wants, because I ain't.

not many men would so readily admit to a career behind bars.
[ though that matters very little. she trusts very few in the city, ex-prisoners or otherwise. ]
Consider this, Mr. Lang.
[ yes, she knows his name. how, do not ask. ]
If we leave it here, something bigger than it would surely come to take a bit out of it. Do you really look forward to more company?
no subject
[He's one of the three. Not good odds.
He will, in fact, consider that, for a moment.]
Right. Got an answer for it. ['Scuse him while he whips out one of his Pym discs.] I can hit it with one of these and *voop!*. Gone. Problem solved.

[ Naturally, Peggy isn't the only one suffering from chronic insomnia. Watch is a relief. A place to channel a day's worth of restless energy into something that feels familiar. A purpose serving the mission.
He watches her make the tea, attention split as he never quite drops his focus from the task of listening. He's a little (pretty hypocritically) concerned. ]
You sure you don't need to crash?

[ she takes such extra care at learning just about everything that here is to learn about her colleagues. A name is such a basic detail. Can't go around working with people whose name you're not familiar with. ]
It's hardly my first dance. Nor is it yours.
[ this mission, not sleeping, pick and choose what she might be referring to. ]
I am quite alright.
