Jim couldn't complain about time with Victor, these days. Since moving in together, they had gotten many opportunities to enjoy each other's company, either with Lucy or just the two of them. Still, it felt nice doing something special every once in a while. It had been the reason why Jim had decided to learn how to dance, so he could surprise Victor with a special date, but that'd have to wait until he'd had a decent number of lessons.

But until then, there were still plenty of ideas for fun, romantic dates. The idea for this one had sort of been built on a random text exchange, and Victor eventually took over the preparations, but Jim didn't mind that at all. Lucy had gone to the sitter's house directly after school, so they'd have the house all to themselves until the following day, and Jim had left work early so he could get ready for their date.

Not that he needed to try so hard, granted, but like he'd told Victor once, he still wanted to. He'd picked out a nice but still comfortable outfit— a pair of dark jeans, a fun plaid shirt, and a simple pullover in case it got chilly later in the night. Overall, an adequate outfit for the theme of the date, he thought.

Checking himself in the mirror one last time (he'd gone through a whole routine, so he looked perfectly groomed and smelled really nice too), he waited until he got a text from Victor, then he grabbed his wallet and phone and headed out the door. Victor had mentioned renting a car, so he looked around for one parked outside, possibly still running.

Victor contently munched on his Twizzlers. He knew James would reach for him sooner or later; he just hoped for sooner. At last he did, and Victor let out a content sigh, trying to lean in with what space they had. He now saw why making out in cars usually happened in the back seat.

But they could kiss like this for a while.

The space between the two seats put a bit of a damper on things, but at least they weren't wearing their seatbelts anymore. Jim managed to draw up his legs as he turned to the side, hands sifting through Victor's hair while he kissed him slowly, tongue darting out once or twice to swipe across the doctor's lips.

Despite not being able to get much closer, this was still pretty nice. Jim certainly had no complaints.

Victor tried shifting closer, hand resting on James’s leg to steady himself. He let out a soft purr feeling a hand in his hair, his own fingers moving to reciprocate. The purr shifted into a moan once tongue came into play. He nudged his against James’s mouth in response. He slid his hand up and down the length of James’s leg as they kissed, the movie’s audio slowly becoming background noise to him.

Jim smiled a little against Victor's lips. It always pleased him how responsive the doctor was. He tried shifting a little closer, his knee resting on Victor's lap, while one of his hands dropped down and slid underneath his jacket, tracing his chest and shoulder. He hummed a little against the kiss, parting his lips wider so they could deepen the contact, inviting Victor's tongue into his mouth.

It was easy to be responsive around James. The man was addicting, and one taste usually wasn't enough for Victor. Especially not in moments like these where they were alone and had hours to take their time with each other. His fingers squeezed James's thigh, tongue moving at the invitation to taste more of the other man's mouth.

He let out a hum into the kiss, muffled and a little breathless, pressing further into the kiss. His fingers curled against Victor's t-shirt, his leg trying to shift closer at the hand squeezing his thigh. There wasn't a lot of elbow room in their current situation, but Jim sure as hell was going to try to make the most of it. Which would probably only make them both very frustrated before long, but they'd cross that bridge when they came to it.

Knowing them, they would get to that bridge very soon. Even know Victor was letting out a soft whine between their lips at the fact that the gear shift was still between them. But to move also meant to stop, and he didn't want to do that just yet. He made the most of their current position, fingers gliding up and down James's thigh, teasing close to his crotch but not quite touching.

Victor's hand on his thigh wasn't exactly helping either. He sucked in a breath when those fingers slid as far up his leg as Victor could manage without actually touching him between his legs, and he shifted despite himself, encouraging the touch. His hand slid down to Victor's waist in the meantime, fingertips slipping between the fabric of his t-shirt and jeans to brush against bare skin.

His skin tingled feeling fingers against the bare flesh. He groaned against James's mouth, shifting to nudge against the touch. And bumping against the gear shift. He pulled back, letting out a frustrated huff.

"Time to move?"

His tongue pushed deeper into Victor's mouth, admittedly greedy, his hand trying to slide farther underneath Victor's shirt. He didn't get too far though, not in their current position, and Victor's own frustrated reaction as he tried to do the same had a smile tugging at the corner of his lips.

"Yeah," he breathed against Victor's lips, nodding. "Great idea. What're you thinking?"

For answer, Victor reached behind them to grab the blanket he brought along. "I was thinking we could lay on the hood of the car and look at the stars for a while."

Of course they would probably start making out again, but it would at least be more comfortable than being in the front seat of the car.

Jim couldn't help smile as Victor got the blanket, letting out a soft chuckle. "You really thought of everything, huh," he hummed, stealing a quick peck from Victor's lips. "Yeah, sounds perfect. Let's go."

It wasn't terribly cold outside anyway, so he didn't think they'd be uncomfortable at all. He climbed out of the car and helped Victor stretch the blanket across the hood, before carefully climbing on top of it, letting out a quiet, suppressed laugh. "You know— I've never done anything like this before."

"Mostly. I wanted tonight to be special. We are celebrating moving in together, after all."

He climbed on the hood once the blanket was spread out and ready. It wasn't the most comfortable, but the way they angled gave them a nice view of the night sky.

"Me neither. But I thought we both love the stars, and we both love stuff like old cars, so I thought the two combined would be great."

He wiggled a little in his spot. It wasn't their soft and fluffy mattress, granted, but once he found a fairly comfortable position, it wasn't so bad. He moved a little closer to Victor, resting his head on his shoulder.

"I love it when you put that brilliant mind of yours to good use."

"I can't think of any better use than in thinking up romantic dates with you, geliebte." Yes, he knew that was sappy as hell to say, but he had a feeling James would appreciate it.

He moved his arm around the other man's shoulders and squeezed gently. The stars here were different from Earth's, of course, but Victor was starting to become familiar with their patterns.

"Mm, neither can I, as a matter of fact," he grinned. He rather liked the other things Victor used his brilliant mind for, but this was definitely a personal favorite.

He settled comfortably next to Victor, watching the stars for a while. The movie was practically forgotten by now, just a distant noise in the background. This was much better, honestly.

The movie had been fine, but laying here with James enjoying the warm air and the open sky was indeed better. There weren't any flood victims or viruses for Victor to worry about, or creatures roaming around that James would need to fight back. At least for a while, it was quiet and calm.

Eventually the movie ended, leaving them in silence. Honestly, after all that happened the past few months, the silence felt good. Victor didn't want to break it just yet.

He wasn't exactly planning on breaking the silence anytime soon, either. The distant sounds in the night barely reached them, and being here with Victor, the both of them completely quiet while in each other's arms, was probably the closest he'd ever been to feeling pure, unadultered peace.

After some minutes he couldn't help humming a song, though, the sound quiet and barely there.

Victor didn’t notice the humming at first. And even when he did, he didn’t try to interrupt. There was something so nice about James’s voice when he sang. Deep and soothing; he could’ve been an old school lounge singer.

“What’s the song?” Victor finally asked.

He smiled a little to himself, knowing that Victor was curious but wouldn't interrupt him just to ask which song he was singing. He tapped his fingers lightly against Victor's chest. Rather than answer directly, he started singing the song instead of just humming it.

"Look at the stars, look how they shine for you, and everything you do... They were all yellow..."

Victor didn't recognize the song at all. It must have been released after the 1980s. He listened to the words, smiling the more the song went on. He would have to ask James about this band later. For now he wanted to enjoy James's voice. He never did get to have James serenade him, since he'd fallen into a coma right before they had the chance.

"I liked that," he declared once James was finished. "You have a beautiful singing voice."

"I'll show you the original, sometime. That band had some really nice music." He figured Victor wouldn't know it, not unless he'd heard it here. He wasn't sure whether it was fair that Victor heard it in his voice first, but... well, at least it was heartfelt.

"Thank you," he closed his eyes, burying his face in the curve of Victor's neck a little. "Hey, I did finally get to sing to you. Minus the guitar, but still."

"I was thinking the exact same thing," Victor told him with an amused noise. "We must be on the same wavelength." Personally, Victor loved it when he and James seemed to share the same thoughts. Even before they really became a couple they were on the same page with things. It was why they fit so well together. And the differences made life together interesting and unpredictable.

"What made you choose the guitar, anyway?" he wondered.

"I always thought we were," he agreed promptly. Wasn't the first time Victor thought something and Jim said it out loud, or vice versa. Jim liked that. He'd had little moments like that with Spock and Bones before, but it was never quite like this. The way he and Victor synchronized so perfectly was unlike anything he'd ever had before.

"Don't know," he shrugged. "We had an old guitar at the farm. I think it was my grandma's or something. I had to get new strings for it, but I sort of just... taught myself."

"Self taught. That's impressive. I took formal lessons. Though my favorite thing to do was trying to figure out the notes of a song without looking at the sheet music. Just remembering how it sounded and matching it with my violin or the piano. I really like puzzles," he added with a little chuckle, "even in music."

He fell quiet again, weaving his fingers through James's hair. "It's interesting," he mused, "how we have this artistic side to us, but we chose science. But I like that. It makes the artistic side more special, because not many other people see it."
