In the days leading up to March 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Sampremi. This is one of Riverview's four yearly celebrations of love, this one focused on sexual love and lust, and sexual relationships that might bloom into more (or not). Traditions associated with Sampremi are a roving street market, raves where residents can seek out some free love and get a little crazy, a massive week-long kink convention, and a tech expo with all-ages and adult options.

a celebration of sexual love and lust

Riverview has always been a place focused on love and building connections in order to foster community, and for a lot of people, sex is part of that, which makes it something worth celebrating! For people who use sex as a way to connect with others, even if only for a short time, or those who use it as a way to connect on a deeper level with the ones they already love, Sampremi is the perfect holiday to get their freak on in a host of new and exciting or comfortable and familiar ways. The holiday features a large kink convention, where various entities in the city can show off their toys, explain their niche kinks, and share their insights with anyone who might be interested, a series of raves that are both all-ages and adult where residents can find someone(s) to share a night (or a week, a few months, or even a life) with. This year, there is a large tech expo where cutting edge tech companies in the city are sharing their newest toys, like improved virtual reality, robotics advances, and many other types of toys - all for work, play, or, in the spirit of the holiday, pleasure. And for those who don't want to connect through sex or who aren't old enough to, there are dances, games, and an entire market full of street food that's meant for sharing, so they can connect in other ways.

i. color raves

Advertised on flyers and digital screens around the city, made to pop as if they were under blacklight, is a series of what's called "color raves" that are happening in various large empty warehouse spaces around the city. They are called color raves for the bright colorful lights, the preponderance of glowsticks that attendees wave around, and for the brightly colored powder for attendees to play with, some of which is spiked with a mild party drug and some of which is just for fun (with the difference clearly marked, of course). There are three types of color rave - adult, all-ages, and youth raves.

(CW: DRUG USE) At each adult rave and all-ages rave there is one specific room where attendees can enter (after proving themselves 18+), and dance or play tag with brightly colored powder that contains small amounts of a legal party drug commonly available in Riverview, which is absorbed through the skin. Not much more intoxicating than having a few beers, the effects of the drug are a pleasant low-key buzzing euphoria, positive sensitivity to touch, a heightening of desires for intimacy, and a mild lowering of inhibitions. Once a character has been hit with the powder, the color lingers on the skin so other attendees can know who has partaken, but once the powder makes contact with a surface (whether it is skin, clothing, or structural) it deactivates, meaning that partakers can safely dance with non-partakers without sharing the intoxicating effects.

Adult raves will have bouncers at the door to ensure that anyone entering is 18+, and there is no limit to when and where the debauchery happens. Clothing is optional, showing skin is encouraged, and there are a lot of neatly tucked away spaces for attendees to get some time alone with one or more than one person, as well as spaces intended for orgies. The atmosphere is sex-positive and non-judgemental, open to any orientation or preference, with various forms of protection available for free, however, to ensure that everyone plays safe there are sober security teams out en masse at all premises to oversee the events.

All-ages raves are open to anyone who wishes to attend, regardless of age. There are bouncers at the door who will check ID and stamp the hand of anyone who is 18+ with a special ink that shows up under blacklight for easy identification. At all-ages raves, 18+ and underage characters can mingle, but there are specific areas set aside for only 18+ characters where they can get down and dirty either in private or the open.

Adult and all-ages raves will have only spiked powder to avoid confusion.

Youth raves are intended only for younger characters under 18, so they can stay up all night and dance like crazy, and meet other young people in the city. The legal drinking age in Riverview Quarantine is 14, and so anyone over 14 can enter and indulge in a few drinks, dancing, and playing tag with a version of the colored powder featured at the adult raves that won't give you anything but a sugar high. There is copious amounts of security on site to ensure that everyone is safe, as well as nurses and off-duty police officers to offer advice or care for anyone who overindulges out of lack of experience. Youth raves will have only sugar powder, brightly colored and sweet to the taste, meant for fun and to play tag with rather than to cause intoxication.

ii. kink convention

For the week of March 4-10 there will be a massive kink convention on the top floor of one of the large exhibition centers downtown, limited to characters 18+. The exhibition is a sexy adult informational convention featuring various kinks and fetishes. Whether you're into leather, latex, lace, or anything else, you'll be able to find the clothes, toys, guides, books, erotica, fiction, and a wide variety of other interesting stuff to explore. While the atmosphere is sex-positive and there are private and public (for the voyeurs and exhibitionists in the room) venues for having sex, it's definitely focused on exploration and information about different stuff to try.

If someone has thought of it and figured it sounded sexy, it can be found here, and with Riverview's high level of tech advancement and widespread acceptance of magic, things can get pretty kinky. Whatever your kink is, there's probably a VR program, sex toy, potion, or spell that can make it happen, and someone who's got the downlow on how to make it great.

iii. tech expo

Riverview prides itself on its technological advancement, and so, running concurrently with the Kink Convention on March 4-10 and on the bottom floor of the same convention center, various cutting-edge tech companies in the city will be sponsoring a Tech Expo. The expo features demonstrations of all of the most advanced technology that's coming into use in the city, ranging from advancements in VR and holotech to robotics and gadgets, you can find the latest and greatest in almost any area of modern technology. Attendees will be able to come with a friend or a date or anything in between to play VR games, enjoy holoprojected escape rooms and puzzles, meet robot pets, try out the most recent music player or that new cell phone that can bend without breaking, and a wide variety of other gadgets.

While most of the tech expo is all-ages and non-sexual, there is a decently-sized adult area where characters must show ID proving they are 18+ in order to enter, where the technology is mostly related to sexual use. This area features advanced sex toys, VR systems intended to explore sex with other people in a virtual environment with no strings attached, sexy video games and holoprograms, and many other sensual technological.

iv. street market

One of the major draws of the festival is the special street food that can only be obtained this time of year. Almost everything you can buy at the Sampremi Festival is meant to be shared - whether it's one piece of meat on two or more sticks or desserts baked with a narrow part in the middle for convenient tearing, everything is built to be shared. The stalls sell everything from cups of soup, sandwiches, roasted or fried meat, deep-fried vegetables and cakes, dumplings, donuts, bagels, turnovers, and anything else you can think of.

Many of the savory dishes are based on the meat of a particular fowl native to the moon Riverview is situated on that has a taste and texture halfway between chicken and duck, cooked to be spicy (ranging from very mild to throat-burning). Many of the desserts are based around a fruit native to the moon that is spherical, red-orange, and has a light sweet taste that is similar to a combination of mango, pineapple, and strawberry. Both ingredients are considered to be aphrodisiacs. Of course, the foods aren't actually aphrodisiacs and any effect is purely placebo, though there are some booths (clearly marked and with someone to check ID) that sell actual aphrodisiac-laced foods and drinks to people who are 18+.

The festival features an entire row of fair games ranging from very high-tech games featuring virtual reality and neon holograms to extremely old-fashioned games with darts and balloons or balls and glasses. The games all have prizes in various shapes and sizes, with the standard stuffed animals, but also with goods and special items donated by any business in the city; ranging from tiny prizes to huge and expensive ones. Due to the nature of the holiday, many of the stalls are set up to cater to winning a prize for your partner(s), and due to the nature of the Quarantine, a lot of them involve aiming or other aspects of pretending to fight.

Originally, the part of the street festival that involved an actual market, with stalls and booths set up with goods, was aimed primarily at romantic trinkets like flowers or jewelry, gifts intended to be purchased for a loved one. As time has gone by, however, this aspect of the market has increased, with many businesses participating, though the emphasis is still on small businesses and anything relating to local culture rather than booths for any of the larger more corporate businesses. There is still plenty of jewelry to be found, for sure, mostly handmade and artisan, but the scope of the Market has widened immeasurably. The Sampremi Market is an excellent place to find specialty foods, clothing, jewelry, art, or other goods that were originally native to cultures on other planets in this reality, or other realities altogether. Many residents in the city use the market to share their unique cultural goods and traditional dress with others.

[ All in all, it's not very difficult to spot familiar faces around the raves, but in this particular case, he had asked Victor specifically if he was thinking of going there. So in this particular instance, Jim's actually roaming the party with a purpose, looking for him among the crowd.

Between the colors, the flashing lights and all the powder everywhere, it takes him a little while, but he eventually spots the bleached hair, and starts making his way over. The glasses give him a bit of pause, but he recognizes Victor in his stance and the way he moves, so he feels fairly safe to drape an arm over his shoulders as he leans in close to speak into his ear. ]

I like the glasses.

[Victor probably would've come anyway even if James hadn't asked, but since he had of course Victor made it a point to attend. Feeling James close has him sucking in a breath. Apparently sleeping with the man on multiple occasions has not made Victor any less receptive to his closeness. Victor would've blamed the drugs if he didn't have this sort of reaction naturally where James was concerned.

He pushes said glasses up the bridge of his nose]

It's the only way I can participate in the rave. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to tell who's been sampling the powder.

[ Whatever energy flows between them, Jim has a feeling that, after a week of sleeping together, it would be well out of their systems if it were just a fleeting thing. It doesn't have to be anything too serious either, granted, but Jim likes the thought of just exploring it little by little, taking their time. He enjoys having Victor around a lot, and right now he can't say he minds the added excitement that comes with touching Victor when he has the powder on his skin, either. ]

That so? [ He catches the frames in his fingers but doesn't take the glasses off of him, just inspecting them curiously. ] How do they work?

[yes, the powder is definitely heightening the sensation. He hadn't even realized how badly he wanted to be touched until he was. The drug buzzes through him, urging him to be daring. He lifts a hand to trace fingers along the neckline of James's shirt]

I crafted a special filter for the lens. Any bright colors will appear in sharper focus to me. That way I'll be able to distinguish the powder on a person's skin. I still couldn't tell you whether it's green or orange, but I at least know it's there.

[ Jim hums softly, a sound drowned easily by the music, though it shows in the way he closes his eyes and bites a little at his lower lip. His skin tingles warmly where Victor's touching him, and it almost makes him want to grab the doctor's hand and urge him to touch even more. ]

That's... ingenious, actually. And it works? You can see the powder? [ Honestly, it hadn't even crossed Jim's mind that Victor might have issues spotting the powder, but thinking of it now, it makes sense. ]

[he's starting to learn enough about James's expressions that he can tell the man is humming, even if he can't quite hear the sound. His lips are touched in a smile, one that grows a bit smug at the praise]

Of course. That woman over there-- [he indicates with a nod]-- has some on her breasts, and that gentleman has gotten it in his hair. Seeing as his dancing partner has powder on their hands, I'm guessing that's where he got it from.

[ He follows with his eyes as Victor points out the other people at the party, nodding. The powder loses its effect when it's passed from one person to the other, but the color still lingers, so it's a fair assumption to make. ]

I see. [ He turns so he's facing Victor fully, putting both his arms around his neck. ] What about me?

[ There's powder going down the side of his face and neck, partly covering a collarbone, staining part of his black shirt and white trousers, as well as his arms and hands, but really he's just asking because he wants Victor looking at him. ]

[he wets his lips as he surveys James, subtly leaning in a little closer as if that will help]

You have it everywhere, James. I can see it on your face and neck. You've even gotten it on your clothes. God, I wish I knew what colors they were. The way you light up is... beautiful.

[ Oh, it helps. Granted, it helps in distracting Jim, but it's not like he's about to complain.

His smile grows wider, and a little more bashful too, which isn't a usual sight at all. If Victor was wondering the way to fluster Jim, then the answer is evidently sweet praise and compliments. ]

But I'm still beautiful even in black and white? [ He asks, a little playful, but also fishing for more praise because that's just how he is. ]

[he snorts at the question, though he can't help feeling pleased to see James bashful for a change. His fingers carefully follow the line the powder makes on James's face]

Of course you are, James. Why else do you think my eyes always draw to you?

[ His smile stretches even wider if possible, and he lets out a soft chuckle. His arms unwind from around Victor's shoulders, hands cupping his neck instead as he leans in to kiss him, the touch tender and slow, pulling away before the contact deepens at all. ]

Sure know how to make a guy feel special. [ Obviously he loves it that Victor can't keep his eyes off of him. ] You're terribly handsome too, just so you know. And the powder looks really nice on you.

[he sighs and presses back against the kiss a little. The drugs have lowered his inhibitions enough to where he doesn't feel overly conscious about this public display of affection. The sexually positive atmosphere doesn't hurt, either.

The compliment has him smiling in pleasure]

Ah. Thank you, James. I was doing some experimenting on how the placement on the body would change the speed and potency of the drug. It's too bad the effects become dormant once the powder comes in contact with skin, or I'd test how it feels to ingest it.

[in other words, he wants to lick it off James's neck. For science?]

[ Victor's answer has his smile turning to a grin, a little bit mischievous, evidently aware of where Victor's headed with that. ]

Well, there might be some... heightening factors. Unrelated to the powder. Unless you think that the effects of the drug would be the only thing that would make you enjoy having a taste.

[ Jim for one knows he'd need no such drug to thoroughly enjoy licking Victor's neck, even if there was no powder or anything else on it. ]

Now you're just fishing for compliments. You know damn well how much I enjoy your taste.

[and to prove the point, Victor tilts his head and runs his tongue along James's neck. He goes for a patch of skin not dusted by the powder]

[ Stuck somewhere between letting out a gasp in surprise, and a giggle at the ticklish sensation, Jim ends up breathing an airy sort of purr, closing his eyes and tipping his head back a little. In a better light, Victor probably would spot a bit of a fluster on his cheeks, but as it is Jim just lowers his eyelids a hint, biting at his lower lip. ]

I just... really like compliments. Particularly when coming from someone— special. [ He leans in, lets his lips ghost Victor's. ] That was very unfair of you, by the way.

[he chuckles, brushing fingers through the other man's hair. The way his pulse jumps and his body buzzes feels pretty standard for being with James, except heightened because of the drugs. That kiss certainly feels more intense, even if it's barely a brush]

And since when we were playing fair?

[ Jim almost laughs at that, because really, even in the short time they've known each other and been involved, Victor already should know better than to provoke him with something like that. Jim would fluster and embarrass the pants off of him, and he wouldn't care in the least that it was in the middle of a very crowded party.

But he proposes instead, ] Kinda wanna find a couch for us to take up, make out there.

[Victor actually does laugh, because he really should know better than to provoke James. But with his inhibitions lowered by the drugs, he bypasses that knowledge and provokes anyway, and looks very pleased with himself for doing so.

He laces his fingers through James's, pulling him along to the nearest couch]

You sure you don't mind sitting out the party?

[ He smiles a hint as Victor catches his hand, fingers weaving through the doctor's and curling into a present hold as he follows him towards the couch. Once Victor sits down, he takes the spot right next to him, closer than strictly necessary simply because he wants to be close to him. ]

I'm not sitting out the party. I'm enjoying it with you.

[ He shrugs. There'll be plenty of raves throughout the month anyway, and plenty of opportunities for him to come back to one if and when he feels like it. He can't imagine he'll enjoy any of them as much if Victor's not there, but still. ]

Now who's the one making a guy feel special?

[he clearly does not mind at all. Victor rests his hand on James's thigh, leaning in to brush their lips together in a light kiss]

You are special.

[ He stated as much only a few minutes ago, after all. Shifting closer as Victor lands his hand on Jim's leg, he leans in and returns the kiss, resting a hand over Victor's collarbone, then sliding it up to his neck. ]

[his fingers twitch and a flush heats his face. The lighting's low enough that James might not see, but then again James might know him enough to tell he's flustered anyway.

Not quite as good as making out to Sting, but the music has a nice bass that vibrates through his body. Or maybe that's the drugs affecting him. He doesn't care either way, because James's mouth is a much better focus for his attention]

[ The music is making it feel as though his heart is beating even harder in his chest too, and that feeling only gets stronger when his lips meet Victor's. He leans in closer, resting a knee on Victor's lap, both his hands crawling up the doctor's neck and his fingers sifting through his hair.

Tilting his head to the side, he fits their mouths together, parting his lips to brush the tip of his tongue lightly across Victor's upper lip. ]

[a growl is trapped in his throat and he slides his hand farther up James's thigh, the other going around the man's shoulders to pull them closer to each other.

The brush of the tongue makes him gasp and he keeps his lips slightly parted. Honestly, he really likes how crazy this man can make him]

[ Jim lets out a soft little giggle into the kiss, fingers curling into Victor's hair, fingertips and nails dragging across his scalp. The powder makes him ache even more for touch, and every bit of Victor's skin feels as though it's the softest and warmest thing he's ever felt.

Not yet pushing to deepen the kiss, he nips lightly at Victor's lower lip, tongue dragging across the flesh right after. He can still feel the taste of Victor's mouth even while keeping the kiss light and slow, and it's enough to make him feel warm and tingly all over. ]
