for Rose
When asking where she could find him, she'd be promptly directed towards the shuttle bay area, since that's where he spent most of his time. The shuttle hadn't really suffered any damage during the trip, but Jim was still running some routine diagnostics just to make sure everything was working perfectly. Hearing the footsteps approaching, he got to his feet and stepped out of the shuttle, still wearing his flight suit. Not recognizing her immediately, he tipped his head at her in a small nod. ]
Looking for something?
no subject
The chance to maybe go out and see what else was out there was a very exciting prospect. She just needs to find the guy who had said he could make that possible. "Captain Kirk," she does end up asking for and gets pointed to where he's working on a shuttle. So cool. ]
I'm looking for you, dude! [ said effervescently with her grin only growing to accompany that energy. ] Jim Kirk, right? I'm Rose. You said I could swing by and, like, see what going outside the walls was all about!
no subject
Point is, when she finally speaks up and grins wide at him, it doesn't take him long to make the connection between her and the texts she sent him, and he can almost guess who she is even before she introduces herself. ]
Ah. That I did. [ He gestures towards the shuttle with a smile. ] Well, feel free to look around. Just don't push any buttons.
no subject
Aw, man. Not even the big red ones? Those are, like, just asking to be pushed.
[ Haha, she's so funny. ]
Is this your shuttle? How do you get a shuttle? How fast can it go? How far?
[ He might want to stop her before she's twenty questions deep and he can't remember the first one. She's just! So excited!!! ]
no subject
I know! Don't ask me why they picked that color, it's terrible. So tempting.
[ Well, he seems to think she's funny. Should count for something. ]
I found her out there some months ago, beyond the wall. Got her up and running, and now here we are. She goes really, really fast, and really, really far. [ He's not going to dump specifics on her, and besides— ] It's much more fun if I show you, rather than tell you. If you're up for a ride?
no subject
Just the worst, [ she agrees, punctuated with an airy laugh of her own. She listens though to his answers carefully and-
If he thought she was excited before, there's no words to truly describe the jubilation at the offer. ] Uhm, yeah. I am absolutely one hundred percent up for a ride. Let's do it, dude. That sounds awesome.
Can you do tricks, too? That'd be so cool.
[ Rosie, it isn't a space age bicycle. Calm yourself. ]
no subject
Well, I can, but with the inertial dampeners you won't really feel that adrenaline rush as much. [ AKA it's not like riding a roller coaster or anything, more like... sitting in those ancient VR-type attractions. Except a shuttle is way cooler.
Stepping onto the cockpit, he gestures to one of the seats at the front, facing the high windshield going from the floor all the way up to the top. ] Take a seat then, and buckle up.
no subject
Ah, I mean- I guess that makes sense. Safety first and all that. [ The way she says it, however, sounds like she doesn't exactly buy into it.
Either way, she does as she's instructed after stepping into the vehicle and buckles up. ]
This is so space-age. I love it. It's, like. Only the stuff of sci-fi in my time. [ It sounds surreal to say it, 'her time.' They really are from different realities. Rose might still be having a hard time wrapping her head around that one despite all that she's been through in her (relatively) short life. ]
no subject
[ Not that Jim can't be reckless and crazy sometimes, but at least when it comes to basic safety he is responsible. And he wouldn't risk Rose's safety either, much less so for a simple trip outside the wall.
Making sure the buckle's locked in properly, he takes his own seat, revving up the engines while he buckles down too. ]
Believe me, I hear that a lot around here. [ It's not something that seems to bother him much, after all it was the same on his version of Earth, some good centuries before his time. A lot of sci-fi, a lot of things that most people likely never thought possible, even in the distant future.
Opening the shuttle bay doors, he lifts the shuttle off the ground just a couple of meters, glancing at her. ] Ready?
no subject
Yeah? I guess it must be kind of strange, being so far ahead while most people are behind.
[ She's experienced that with a couple of guys from ye oldy times already. There was even a dude from the eighties. It was wild.
The blond gives a thumbs up in affirmation that she's ready and raring to go. ] Ready as I'll ever be, dude.
no subject
[ He's a bit of a dork about it, admittedly. But he can't help himself. It's not every day he gets to talk to someone who was actually around when Beastie Boys were still a thing, or when people still used lens cameras or cassette players.
He nods at her confirmation, and that's all he needs to start piloting the shuttle towards the bay doors, flying them out slowly at first. The inertial dampeners will make it so Rose won't really feel any acceleration even once they speed up— which, considering how fast the shuttle can go, is something she really should be grateful for. ]
no subject
That's cool, dude! I'm from 2018, so- Y'know, whatever you wanna' know from back then I'd be happy to talk about. I never went to uni or anything but- I self-taught a lot.
[ Which is actually a glimmer of truth in her otherwise intricate web of lies. Rose loved to learn and had used every opportunity to. It's why she knows four instruments and has an embarrassingly nerdy knowledge of mythology. ]
no subject
There's only so much you can learn at school, anyway. [ Sure never did him much good. He learned more on his own. ] I'll keep that in mind, though.
[ The shuttle passes the doors and goes out into the wild, going higher up and flying over the nearest trees. He speeds up a little, but still slow enough to let her take it all in. ] Likewise if you have any questions about the future, by the way. Up to mid-23rd century anyway.
no subject
I mean, I'm like just assuming we have flying cars if you're a spaceship captain but- What else cool advancements are there? Like, maybe stuff I wouldn't think.
no subject
Hover cars, actually. Hover bikes too. Anything that flies is considered a shuttle. [ Even those Earthbound and not capable of space flight. He hums a little, thoughtful. ] Well, ever heard of transporters? Oh, what about replicators? Virtually no one here has ever heard of those.
no subject
Hover bikes! What! I want a hover bike. My world needs to get with, jeez. [ At the mention of transporters and replicators, she's immediately fascinated. ]
I mean, like, in sci-fi shows and stuff. But we don't have anything that fancy, a lot of people think it'll be never possible.
no subject
[ You know, if she feels like taking advantage of this place and her time here, she may as well start by getting herself a cool bike. ]
Oh, definitely possible. In my universe, anyway. Transporters and replicators are very much a reality where I come from.
no subject
[ She absolutely will. Once she... has the money. It's rough out there for a DJ trying to make a name for herself here in Quarantine. She's optimistic though that she'll get somewhere soon, hopefully. ]
So, like. You can just get zipped from one place to another? That's so convenient.
no subject
In any case— she'll find that it really is easy to buy a bike, if she wants one. ]
As long as you're within range, and there's no interference. We can, yes. It comes in handy when you travel around through deep space a lot. My ship's not very easy to land, and using transporters is much quicker and more practical than heading out with a shuttle every time we get to a new planet.
no subject
I guess that makes sense. So, like, deep space- How deep we talking? Again, in my time, we're like... at Mars, max. Which is a pretty big deal for people.
(( ooc: heyo! i'm on hiatus until probably mid-april due to life stuff so i will still be painfully slow if you'd rather drop/handwave this and start something new when I get back lmk!!! ))
no subject
Mars does not count as deep space, technically. [ Well, depends on what sort of 'deep space' they're talking about, but for the purposes of this discussion. ] We can go well beyond the limits of our solar system. The galaxy's divided into four quadrants, and we can get to the largest part of two of them. The other two quadrants not so much yet. But there are countless planets and stars even just on the Alpha and Beta quadrants, so there's plenty there to see, find and learn about.
no subject
Huh, [ is all she says to that at first. It's fascinating, really. The idea of whole galaxy to be explored just beyond their solar system. ] What's stopping you from exploring the other two quadrants?
no subject
Too far away. We have pretty advanced technology but it still takes too long to get to either of the other two quadrants, at least for now. [ He shrugs. ] We'll get there. Baby steps, you know. There's still a lot for us to explore on the Alpha and Beta Quadrants anyway.
no subject
Huh. I guess I figured in the future nothing would be off limits still, but... That makes sense. We're still figuring out how the heck to get to planets within our solar system in my time, so. We'll get there. And you guys will too!
So, like, is that what you do? Go off adventuring to new planets and whatnot?
no subject
[ But that hardly means one should stop trying. As a matter of fact Jim's not once given up on a thing after joining the Academy, and he's gotta admit, that tendency has worked very well for him so far. New life, all that. ]
A little bit of that, a little bit of politics and diplomacy, a little bit of dangerous stuff. It's not all fun times, and it can even get boring at times, but I love it. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
