She misses Christmas on the farm so much it's a physical ache in her chest.
Which is probably a big part of the reason that she turns up on Jon's stoop instead of just sending his gift. She'll rationalize it to herself as a cost issue. Having something this heavy brought over through a service would no doubt be very expensive. A ten gallon bucket full of legos is not exactly easy to transport. Natasha, for example, has wheeled it across half the city on a skateboard. Cause that makes total sense.

Or at least he's trying to. When he hears a knock on the door, Jon pads over in his pajamas. Because it's Christmas. He opens the door and beams when he sees who it is. ]
Miss Natasha! Merry Christmas.

Whatever this place really is, whatever the flaws and whatever her personal punishments, it's not all bad. This is a bright spot. "Do me a favour, huh?" She stands up, rocking herself slightly to the side so the board rolls her out of the way. "If you're too old for these, don't tell me until after New Year's." She knows that it would go over well with Cooper and Lila, but they're hardly normal children. Of course, Jon isn't normal, either. That's probably part of the reason this feels so comfortable.

We don't have any food right now. At least nothing good. Damian almost burned down the kitchen trying to make pie.

She lets herself in after him, closes and locks the door, and then steps on the heels of her boots to slip her feet out of them. She's prepared this time, for the cold weather, with fleece lined snowflake socks. From inside her shopping bag, she pulls out two more pairs, and holds them out to Jon. "All right. Reindeer or trees?"

[ No contest. Jon glances at the kitchen before looking back at Natasha with a sheepish grin. ]
Uh, do you want something to eat? Damian tried to make pie but he kind of burned it all. And it's not great. But we probably have something in the fridge?

Which still smells like smoke, and that's hardly appetizing. "Is he usually a better baker, or is this par for the course? I've got break and bake cookies." A couple of packages come out of the shopping bag and get set on the counter. Triple chocolate. Because if you're going to eat junk, don't do it half-assed. "We could probably find a place to deliver. Chinese restaurants are always open in New York. There's probably a lot more variety here, where most people don't even know what Christmas is. If you're hungry. You're hungry, right? Growing boys are always hungry."
Which is to say that she's kind of hungry, too. Lugging forty five pounds of legos across the city is surprisingly draining. She could definitely go for some noodles, or maybe soup. Depends on what Jon wants. The whole point of Christmas is to make the kids happy. The usual kids might not be here, but Jon counts for something.

[ Since this isn't a typical Christmas for Jon and that does bother him on a microscopic level, but Jon isn't going to hold onto that feeling right now. He sets the gallon of LEGO to the side, nodding at it with approval. ]
I'm good for ordering if you are. I have some extra money for the holidays from Ms. Jones.

Natasha had bungled her way through pancakes for ages, but kudos to the kid for aiming high. She turns on the fan over the stove to try and get rid of the lingering smoke smell. "Do you have a candle? Something citrus? It helps." If he doesn't, she can rub some orange peel on random surfaces in the kitchen. Surely there's an orange or a lemon or something in the house? "Or we could just make the whole place smell like chocolate." She waves the packages of cookies in the air for a moment. She's not going to make him cookies from scratch. She likes him way too much for that. Still, there's something to be said for anything fresh from the oven.
"Cookies and movies and lego forts. If you're up for it. That's a bit of a mixed bag there," she says, nodding her head at the massive bucket. "Literally. Takes a lot of pieces to fill up a ten gallon bucket. So they're just, you know, pieces. No full sets, I don't think. We'll have to make it up as we go."
no subject
I'm up for it. How did you even get so many? Did you have a secret mission inside a toy factory?

[ Jon missed the slip, bouncing on his heels. Natasha was the coolest adult here and whenever she came by, it was amazing. He leans over the table as he watches Natasha work. ]
Are these chocolate chip?

[ His mind is blown. ]

All right, it's a weird sentiment and she'll be the first one to admit it.
Still.
Nat cranks on the oven, sets if for convection at the a higher temperature, and slides the cookie sheet in. "All right, so the whole chewy and crispy trick-- we need..." She checks the back of the package and bites her bottom lip. "That'd be..." She adjusts the temperature a little hotter and nods, then tells her phone to set a ten minute timer "Right. So. Movie? Lego fort? Both?"

Movie first. Watching a movie during the holidays is tradition. Dad makes us watch the old stuff, but we're allowed to change it up.

God, this is so much like home it hurts. It hurts in a wonderful way, the kind of pain that makes her remember that there's something good to hold on to. The kind of pain that forces her to remember that she's not a machine any more, that if there's something that can be hurt, there's something human.
