Never cooked before. Start out making pie. Yeah, sure.

Natasha had bungled her way through pancakes for ages, but kudos to the kid for aiming high. She turns on the fan over the stove to try and get rid of the lingering smoke smell. "Do you have a candle? Something citrus? It helps." If he doesn't, she can rub some orange peel on random surfaces in the kitchen. Surely there's an orange or a lemon or something in the house? "Or we could just make the whole place smell like chocolate." She waves the packages of cookies in the air for a moment. She's not going to make him cookies from scratch. She likes him way too much for that. Still, there's something to be said for anything fresh from the oven.

"Cookies and movies and lego forts. If you're up for it. That's a bit of a mixed bag there," she says, nodding her head at the massive bucket. "Literally. Takes a lot of pieces to fill up a ten gallon bucket. So they're just, you know, pieces. No full sets, I don't think. We'll have to make it up as we go."

[ He goes to open a few windows, his nose wrinkling before nodding in satisfaction. Jon should have done that earlier. Jon glances at Natasha. ]

I'm up for it. How did you even get so many? Did you have a secret mission inside a toy factory?

"Oh, absolutely. Totally abused my power and authority as a law enforcement officer to fill up a massive paint bucket for my ne-w little buddy." It's the barest little anomaly in her words, like the tiniest record skip ever. She'd been about to say nephew. Stupid. How very lonely and homesick she's become here. Her mask doesn't skip the same way her voice almost did. Same bright smile as she tears open one of the packages of cookies and pulls out the solid mass of still mostly frozen dough. "Let's see. If I remember, cookie sheets are... here." She retrieves one, and begins breaking the cubes apart and placing them on the sheet a few inches apart.

I knew it!

[ Jon missed the slip, bouncing on his heels. Natasha was the coolest adult here and whenever she came by, it was amazing. He leans over the table as he watches Natasha work. ]

Are these chocolate chip?

"Oh yeah." She smiles down at him at her shoulder and places another couple of cookies. "Chocolate chips, fudge chunks, mini marshmallows, and the dough is..." She checks the package. "Snowflake white chocolate. Which, I'm pretty sure that just means there's white chocolate powder in it or something? Can't bake a snowflake. Trying to sound festive? I tried some samples in the store. They were awesome." Not that it's difficult to impress her with a cookie. It took her a solid two weeks for Laura to teach her how to make perfect pancakes, and she still gets them a little too brown half the time.

Woooow. Fancy. I didn't know all those types even existed.

[ His mind is blown. ]

"People love to just make shit up for the holidays." There's the tiniest little blip in her movements as she spaces out the cookies. "Stuff. Make stuff up for the holidays." It's not that he's too young to hear someone curse, and in this place it's fairly unavoidable if you have access to the network. It's a sort of-- it's not that she thinks Clark is capable of caring, what with him not being here, but she can imagine he'd be the type of guy to frown at bad language around his kid. He might not be here, but this is still his kid...

All right, it's a weird sentiment and she'll be the first one to admit it.

Still.

Nat cranks on the oven, sets if for convection at the a higher temperature, and slides the cookie sheet in. "All right, so the whole chewy and crispy trick-- we need..." She checks the back of the package and bites her bottom lip. "That'd be..." She adjusts the temperature a little hotter and nods, then tells her phone to set a ten minute timer "Right. So. Movie? Lego fort? Both?"

[ At this point, Jon is very used to hearing people swear. He just tunes it out because he's not comfortable with it. The few times Jon has slipped up when it comes to swearing, he always feels incredibly self-conscious and retracts his words immediately. ]

Movie first. Watching a movie during the holidays is tradition. Dad makes us watch the old stuff, but we're allowed to change it up.

"Well if it's tradition, don't you think we should stick with it? Unless you're sick of the old stuff. It really just needs to be a Christmas movie. Die Hard is technically a Christmas movie. You just have to pretend to not hear any of the bad words so that I'm not actively corrupting anyone." She smiles as she takes down a plate for the eventual cookies. "That's the beauty of being a child during the holidays. You pretty much run the show. All gown ups are at the mercy of your innocent wonder."

God, this is so much like home it hurts. It hurts in a wonderful way, the kind of pain that makes her remember that there's something good to hold on to. The kind of pain that forces her to remember that she's not a machine any more, that if there's something that can be hurt, there's something human.
