Now he could only crawl weakly back into bed and sigh at how even curling his fingers feels weaker than it should be.
Still, that tricorder thing isn't something he's seen before, and he eyes it curiously.]
Fufu, you're awfully blunt for a doctor. That technology isn't something that most of the doctors use here, either. [Since this is probably the fifth time he's been here already.] It looks more similar to that place I was before here...
[Is he even listening to these call outs? Barely.]
no subject
You mean that Eluvio place? Jim mentioned that.
[Not that it matters any to him. What matters is getting this kid back in good shape. Were they back on the Enterprise or he understood the current tech better, he had a feeling he could do a helluva lot more for the kid than he currently could.]
I'm from the twenty-third century Earth. Work on a starship and all that. [He gives the information like it is. Not like any of them would know about his reality or the kid would've recognized a tricorder when he sees it.]
Regardless, I have no qualms lockin' ya down, kid if you don't calm down and get some rest. And when I find out who had you gettin' so tuckered out I am gonna give 'em a piece of my mind. You got enough problems without tryin' to race to the grave.
no subject
After spending so much time in a hospital already, I... really don't enjoy being locked up like that, so I'd appreciate if you could avoid that. [He knows he just tried to break out, and he might try again, but he really dislikes this place in ways he can't eloquently describe.]
That aside, though, you said something interesting just now. Do you know of someone from the Eluvio, as well? Someone that remembered?
no subject
But he's not heartless. He's a doctor for a reason. So he lightly closes up the tricorder and puts it aside before sitting on the edge near the foot of the bed. Not looking at Eichi, he eyes the window he had been prying open.]
Supposedly my captain and I were there, but we don't remember it. But then, after dealing with splits in time lines before, I don't think this is such a huge thing to worry over.
[He finally turns his head to Eichi, his expression milder than before.] I'll make ya a deal. I'll figure out how to make these visits short and sweet and try not to take your desire to run personally... but you are gonna have to start payin' attention to your limits. If ya don't, then you're gonna get stuck in here and I promise ya, I know how to deal with flight risks. My captain is definitely one of them.

[That's two more who don't remember, and he makes a mental note of it. This scolding is unpleasant, even if he knows that it's called for, and he lets out a quiet sigh for it. It's the offer at the end that gets him to glance over to the doctor.]
My health had been relatively fine lately, so I thought a walk would be fine. Gladio was so insistent on jogging... It's true that I should have refused to attempt. [So, his bad.]
This weak body of mine is terribly irritating. If you can deal with it quickly, then I'll do my best to stay out of your way, of course.
no subject
[He feels a little bad for giving that information. It seems to upset the kid more than anything else, but he decides it's best to be honest than make anything up.]
Well, best to see your limits and stick with them. Just start listenin' to your body and quit lyin' to yourself. It'll only bury ya.
[Pausing, he angles his head a bit and rolls his eyes at Eichi's less than gung ho behavior. But then, he gets the idea of having limitations. Turning the tricorder over in his hands he let out a soft sigh.]
When I first started out as a doctor, there was this young girl. Sickly thing. Born with a lot of problems. And for all the miracles of medicine, I knew I couldn't save her. She wanted to be a Starfleet captain. Sail the stars and help people. Guess part of why I decided when I had nothin' left, I'd join Starfleet and help the universe for her. So, let me help and help me out in turn. I'll figure out somethin' to get ya ahead of this thing, but you've gotta work with me. Understand? I'm not a miracle worker, though I wish I were.
[And he likely has no miracle left to give after saving Jim. Not that he'd trade that sliver of a chance hope at a miracle for anything. Still, he knows this kid needs a shot of hope more than anything else. So, he plans to give it to him.]

As a doctor, you must understand that some patients can't sit idly by and deal with treatment as death inevitably approaches. The doctors here, the doctors on the Eluvio, and the doctors back home have all realized there's no curing this. I have my medicine, my monthly check ups, but I still have this weak body.
In order to achieve my goals, I won't stop at my own limitations. It's not that I'd like to die early, Dr. McCoy, but I don't intend to "wait it out" for so long. I'll be patient in some ways and careful in others, but there will probably always be times when I push myself. That's just how it is for me.

[In the end, he rolls his eyes. He really hates this. People that don't give a damn about what their body tells them. It makes him angry, but it's not his place to decide for them neither.
Still, he cuts a narrowed look at the other before pushing to his feet.] I'm not gonna say I can make you do anything, but I also can't say I agree. I can only do what my job allows me to do. Just remember that you're not the one that's gonna be left to live with your actions in the end.
no subject
Would you be willing to do that for me? My condition can worsen or ease up depending on the season and a number of other factors, so it's better if I have one person who's aware of it.
no subject
I'm a doctor. It's my job to care for a patient. Like their attitude or not. But if you go out and land yourself back in here repeatedly with no regard, you can see another doctor. Till then, I'll deal with it.
no subject
You know, I'll wind up in the hospital regardless of whether or not I push myself. There are times when even walking is too much. You can't expect me not to walk, can you?
no subject
[Kids. The heck was wrong with them these days?] If ya get my drift that is.
no subject
[Now he's being sassy. Hm. But that's ruined by a little coughing fit.]
no subject
Breathing out slowly himself, he rolled the whole situation over in his mind before trying to pick his words carefully.]
Stop tryin' so hard to be defiant. You're wastin' your air on it, that's for damn sure. Just please try to realize I'm not tryin' to hurt you or take your life away. I'd rather be of help. I get the notion you've never really tried to see it from a doctor's point of view. Though... most people don't.
Just try. S'all I ask. And save the smart assery for when it's needed. [Squeezing his shoulder lightly, he pulled away and moved to the door.] Since my presence isn't so wanted, I'll show myself out.
no subject
Mm, you can rest easy that I won't scale down the building. If we could avoid any IVs this time, then I'll behave extra well for you, doctor. ...Thank you.
no subject
If you sleep today, I'll personally release you in the mornin'. [Pausing, he frowns a little at himself then turns to look at him. He can't help but offer even if he doesn't think Eichi will take him up on it.] I need to finish my rounds, but I think I can scare up a deck of cards or somethin', if you want to play a game before I go home. I know hospitals are pretty borin' for the patient.
no subject
[Tomorrow morning... That's good enough, considering his condition. He'll take it and sleep the day away.]
We can end it there if you like. <3
[It wasn't the 'wisest' choice he could have made... but he felt like it was the best one for now. If you can't make some sort of connection with a patient you may as well not even try. And well... he didn't like the lack of hope anyway.
Giving him a slight smile, he ducks out of the room and gets back to work so he can keep that promise.]
