[ This is a mingle log, so everyone feel free to write up your own starters, or just vaguely list out things your character might be up to, so other people know how they'd encounter them and where/how to engage. Some ideas for Perimeter Guard stuff:

• studying maps and working on map expansion;
• compiling wild animal data, reading/writing reports, other boring paperwork stuff;
• checking weaponry and devices, making repairs, etc.;
• going beyond the wall for a bit of surveying and exploration;
• checking out the shuttle currently being repaired (only Poe and Jim would actually be able to take it out for a test flight of any kind, but feel free to poke either of us if you'd like to thread that out!).

A hard light construct, right? [ Something like it. It's the easiest comparison Jim can make, with the knowledge he has from his own world, and he figures even if the man calls it something different, the concept must be the same. ]

Any chance I can take a look at it? [ His tone is a bit hopeful, but he's also ready to hear a 'no'. Curious though it is, he won't push. ]

[jedies]

[ Obi-Wan doesn't hesitate, but there's a definite sense of deliberation. A Jedi's lightsaber is his life and Obi-Wan rarely parts with his. The war had merely strengthened his grip.

But an outward look doesn't hurt. Obi-Wan shrugs casually before he unclips it from his belt smoothly. ]

I only ask you keep it in one piece.

[winscenario]

[ Jim's expression brightens when the man pulls the saber from his belt, reaching for it carefully. ]

Don't worry. I'm not dying to take it apart or anything.

[ Scotty would be a lot more prone to wanting to do that, but even he wouldn't do something like that if he weren't permitted.

He turns it around in his hands, looking the handle over attentively. Lastly he points it away from them both and activates the saber, letting out a surprised sound and a chuckle at the beam of hard light that emerges from it. ]

I'm... going to assume it's sharp, so I won't touch it. [ 'Sharp' being a loosely applied term here, but he knows what he means. ]

[jedies]

That might be for the best. I wouldn't want you to accidentally lose your hand.

[ Says Obi-Wan, the mass cutter of limbs. ]

We have different power settings. Though initiates only get their lightsaber after their trial to Ilum.

[winscenario]

You know what? I'm almost sure my doctor could fix that too.

[ Maybe. After having about six heart attacks and yelling at him until his hair fell off. ]

Initiates? [ Oh boy. Why'd you have to go and say that, Obi-Wan. ] You teach people how to use these?

[jedies]

[ He blinks, nonplussed. While he is adapting to Riverview, it still comes to a surprise to Obi-Wan when people don't know much about the Jedi. ]

Of course. The lightsaber is not a weapon anyone can use. It requires certain abilities — senses and instincts that must be honed over a long period of time. We must be taught how to wield and craft our lightsabers.

[winscenario]

Mm... I see. [ He nods, looking the saber up and down for a while, turning it around carefully before turning it off again. ]

But these sorts of abilities— can they be, I don't know... acquired? Or is it something inherent to the individual? [ A pause, ] And if so, how can you tell if someone has those abilities?

[jedies]

[ Obi-Wan folds his arms with a thoughtful hum. ]

Force-sensitivity is natural. You have to be born with it. I can sense it in other people as well. As far as I know, it cannot be acquired.

[winscenario]

[ Jim looks just as thoughtful for a moment there. He knows he probably shouldn't ask, but also... he's too damn curious for his own good. ]

Can you sense it in me?

[ So subtle, he is. ]

[jedies]

[ Obi-Wan chuckles. ]

I can, but it's not high enough to have a proper lightsaber. Though perhaps a training saber is possible.

[winscenario]

Is it? [ He perks up, almost like a kid on Christmas Eve, being given the gift he wants the most. ] Well, for that I suppose I would need someone to train me. You don't happen to know anyone who could do that, do you?

[ :) :) :) ]

[jedies]

[ People are so very transparent when it comes to lightsabers. ]

I might be able to spare a few lessons.

[winscenario]

[ Come on man, they're seriously freaking cool. Who wouldn't want to learn how to wield something like that? ]

You would? That sounds great! [ And since Obi-Wan's being so kind, he tries to return the gesture. ] I can offer some flight lessons if you'd like, once the shuttle repairs are done.

[jedies]

[ Obi-Wan grimaces. ]

While I appreciate the offer, I'll pass. I'm a decent pilot, but I've never been fond of flying.

[ Translation: Obi-Wan is actually an excellent pilot, but he hates it because he's stuck up and considers it beneath him. ]

[winscenario]

Oh. Well, that's a shame. [ Flying's great fun, how dare. ] I know someone just like you, though, so I know better than to push.

[ Granted, Bones seems to be a little more grouchy than Obi-Wan, especially when he's complaining about something he dislikes (like flying), but still. ]

In that case, if there's anything I can ever do for you, let me know. Or— I can pay you for those lessons? We can do that too.

[jedies]

[ Obi-Wan's brow furrows at the thought of being paid ]

It isn't necessary. Jedi come to serve. I'd be happy to help. Material offerings go against our code.

[winscenario]

[ Jim's learned that different people, different cultures and different worlds all work in their own ways, and he endeavors to be versatile and quick to adapt. At Obi-Wan's words, he nods, dropping any attempt to offer something in return, unless Obi-Wan should ask it of him sometime later. ]

In that case, forget I asked. [ He smiles a bit. ] For what it's worth, I've never had to deal with currency much. I'm still getting used to it being part of my daily life in this place.

[jedies]

[ Obi-Wan listens attentively, curious. ]

I suppose I am in a similar position. The Jedi were funded by the Republic. We certainly didn't have personal funds.

[winscenario]

The Republic? [ He asks curiously. ] But there is a currency in your world? Even if you don't use it personally.

[jedies]

It is a coalition of planets and systems working together. Each system has a voice in the Senate and has a position to help keep the galaxy together.

We use credits. Other places have different forms of currency of course. Gold, Spice, to name a few.

[winscenario]

Oh. That doesn't sound so different from the Federation. [ On the surface, anyway. He goes on to explain. ] United Federation of Planets. It's the main government body in our galaxy. Well, our corner of the galaxy, anyway. Some of the planets in the Federation still use some form of currency or another.
