( open ) get on board for perimeter guard shenanigans

who: Perimeter Guard members & visitors
what: a catch-all for routine Perimeter Guard stuff and shenanigans
when: throughout September
where: Perimeter Guard, beyond the wall, etc.
warnings: put any warnings in comment headers if need be!

[ This is a mingle log, so everyone feel free to write up your own starters, or just vaguely list out things your character might be up to, so other people know how they'd encounter them and where/how to engage. Some ideas for Perimeter Guard stuff:

• studying maps and working on map expansion;
• compiling wild animal data, reading/writing reports, other boring paperwork stuff;
• checking weaponry and devices, making repairs, etc.;
• going beyond the wall for a bit of surveying and exploration;
• checking out the shuttle currently being repaired (only Poe and Jim would actually be able to take it out for a test flight of any kind, but feel free to poke either of us if you'd like to thread that out!).

Go forth and have fun! ]

[ Apparently Will was that guy who threw himself into the paperwork.

It was actually a very useful tactic to avoid socializing and the paperwork had to get done and he actually enjoyed writing up details on the monsters and wild animals. He did most of this work in his classroom in between the classes he taught on ... well monsters and wild animals.

Ask politely and he might just take on other reports. Particularly those that are now past due?

Occasionally Will made his way out to the motor pool where he'd take on a mechanical project of some sort. Again, it didn't usually require that he be sociable and he could spend hours taking an engine apart to find the minute bits of damage that needed to be tended.

He was good at diagnostics and if the oil on his cheek and hands was anything to go by didn't mind getting grubby. It really didn't matter what type of engine; if it had mechanical moving parts, he was in there tinkering away.

Otherwise he could be caught standing up on the wall, usually close to dusk when the monsters and wild animals began to stir in the deep foliage just beyond the security of the walls. There was often an expression on his face that may have given the impression that he was considering making his way down to join them. ]

[Ivar has heard from other Guard members that Will apparently is very diligent about his paperwork. That's just the sort of man Ivar needs right now. He pulls up, surprisingly silent for someone in a wheelchair. His odd blue eyes have a fierce light to them, compounded by the fact he keeps playing around with a knife as he talks.]

Can you do me a favor? I'm supposed to write up a report and apparently they're not taking being illiterate as an excuse this time.

[Apparently, killing a big, green beast the size of a small hill and skinning it while taking a civilian along required him to actually state what happened.]

[ Ivar could have rolled up in one of the Perimeter Guard off-road vehicles and Will might have missed it. The man tended to be sunk too deep into his own head much of the time.

Or in other words, he jumped slightly when the man began to speak, looking up and over the rims of his glasses with an owlish blink before completely process that the guy was speaking to him/. ]

Being i ... [ He started, stopped and let his brain catch up to his mouth before he continued. ] How have you gotten along in the past?

[He waits for Will to look up, noting with some amusements the man's startled nature.

Ivar shrugs at the question. There isn't much call for learning how to read among Vikings. They keep track of things almost entirely through oral traditions. Ivar had only learned as much as he had because there wasn't a whole lot else to do when he was a child and unable to get around. Learning to read Norse runes had kept him occupied.]

I only ever learned how to read runes, not the Christian alphabet. When it comes to doing reports, I just ask everyone else to do them for me.

[It just so happened Will happened to be convenient and available right now.]

[ Will blinked, intrigued by the comment about runes but simultaneously wondering if it would be considered rude to ask.

Possibly.

For the moment, he nodded and sat back. ]

Do you mind if I use some of the report in my own research, and possibly the classes I teach?

I don't mind. Are you a teacher then?

[It's the Viking way of saying that Will looks like the kind of nerd who definitely can't fight. They didn't think much of scholars, which back in the 800s usually meant the religious class of priests and monks, which Vikings loved to raid and pillage.]
