[Open] Come away little light
who: Rey and OTA
what: Rey coming to the conclusion she would be here for sometime and CR building.
when: 9/16--9/20
where: Around town
warnings: None, will be updated as needed.
In the beginning, Rey was dead set on finding a way home. She wanted--no, needed to find a way back home. There were things she had to do. She had to find Luke, she had to give him his lightsaber and...hopefully, he would train her. Given her connection to the Force, she would need to be trained. There would come a time when she would face Kylo Ren again, and she had to be prepared, but now that she was stuck in this place. What would she do?
It had been a week or two since she came via portal to this place. A place that made no sense to her and one she wasn't willing to trust. Some viewed it as a second chance, a new home for themselves. While that was fine for them, she couldn't stay, but she couldn't leave either. Was this part of the Force? Obi-Wan said she had to learn to trust in it. The Force could be confusing, but there had to a be a reason behind it, right? Rey was contemplating that idea, letting it circle around in her head as she left the Communal Hall. If she was meant to be here, then maybe it was time for her to start looking for work?
She went into the city, her eyes flickering down to her phone every now and then. There were times when she was searching through it and the posts on the network, looking for answers..none came. If she was going to find work...what would she do? Jim had suggested she join the Perimeter Guard, but could she? She didn't exactly trust how things were being run here...but what other choice did she have?
Rey wasn't paying too much attention to where she was going until she stopped realizing she was at the park. She took a seat on a park bench and mentally ran through her options and what she would need to do to live in this new place.

Sounds like you're pretty new. How long you been here?
[ It had been a while since Cisco arrived, but he remembers it, and how disorienting it had been, even for him, and he had come in with at least a passable knowledge of multiverse theory and a certain familiarity with weird shit just sort of happening nonstop. ]
I'm Cisco, by the way.
no subject
A few days where she used the network to write to people and even met a few in person. A few days to gather information and she was no where near leaving. A ship that was in pieces, but she wouldn't take it from Jim and Poe. She wouldn't dare. If anything, she would have to build a ship from scratch, and to do that she would need money...and food.
She turned to face him a little more.]
Rey. [And had they spoken on the network? She didn't think so...] How long have you been here?
no subject
Good to meet you, Rey. I've been here half a year, ish.
[ It's kind of weird to think about that. In some ways, it feels much shorter than that - when he thinks about the place itself, and how much he still doesn't know about this moon, and the portal, and the rest of it. But when he considers the people he's met here, the friendships he's made... six months seems like barely any time at all. Cisco smiles softly at the thought.
He pulls out that rather rumpled paper bag he'd used for his lunch, hauls out the half-eaten bag of gummy bears and sets it on the bench between them, indicating that she's welcome to take some. He plucks a green one from the bag and pops it into his mouth, chewing as he thinks about what to say next. Eventually, he settles on: ]
Yeah, I was pretty freaked out for about the first month or so, then I started to chill out a little more. You from Earth?
[ It's one of the first questions he asks new people, here. Which is pretty wild, when he stops to think about it. ]
no subject
[Given the circumstances, it was nice to meet anyone that wasn't trying to do anything evil, dangerous, or harmful. Thus far, it was....interesting to be in a place where there wasn't a war, and there was more life to it. No sand, no hot sun bearing down, and a bed. Though, it was a bit too soft for her likening. There were nights when she contemplated sleeping on the floor for comfort.
She watched Cisco take out a brown bag. For a moment she thought he was reaching for a weapon, but he didn't seem threatening. He looked like he was trying to help her, which was nice. It wasn't often help was given on Jakku, not without a price. Her eyes peered down to the bag he set between them, knitting her eyebrows together.
What were those colorful pebbles? She didn't think he was offering to her, not when she had nothing to give in return.]
Earth? No, I'm from Jakku--a desert planet. [Or junkyard as a lot of people like to call it. A wasteland, but things still grew there. Albeit, rarely, but some plants managed to survive...she did.
So he was a different planet and had been here for a few months...]
This is very different from where I'm from, and staying here longer than I thought..it's jarring. [She'll need a job, and there were so many other things to figure out on a big, grander scale.]
Does it get easier?
no subject
[ Cisco looks around them, at the vibrant greenery of the park, and at the tops of the trees sticking up between the buildings all through the city, and the forest beyond. This place is lush, and a bit humid, and just about as far from a desert as it's possible to get. ]
Never heard of Jakku from anybody else I met here.
[ Which doesn't necessarily mean that she is alone, here. Cisco's hardly met everyone, and besides, not everyone comes from a universe as planet-bound as he does. ]
So have they got, like... interplanetary travel? 'Cause we definitely didn't where I was from. So the whole... living on a moon, meeting aliens and whatever, totally blew my mind.
[ When she asks if it gets easier, he considers carefully before he gives his answer. He doesn't want to give false hope, or trivialize this girl's obvious distress at her situation. At the same time, he has to be honest. So he shrugs, and says: ]
It did, for me. At first I missed home a lot. My friends, my job, my city. But I adjusted. Got used to the way this place works. Started meeting new people from all over the multiverse, trying new things.
[ Cisco's smile is gentle, encouraging, and he gestures to the bag of gummy bears, taking another two himself and saying: ]
Do they have gummy bears, on Jakku? 'Cause if not, you should definitely try one. They're food. Well, candy, but still. My point is, that's the best thing about this place. Getting to try stuff from places you never woulda been able to go, and meet people you wouldn't have been able to meet.
no subject
Not many people go to Jakku. [A junkyard planet where people very rarely left. Not unless they were traders, criminals, or thieves. Those who had a ship could leave. Whereas those without one couldn't, stuck working for Unkar Plutt day, after day. Cisco's question briefs takes Rey's mind off her own troubles. Talking about something familiar was calming, in a way, even if it was about Jakku.]
Yes, you can travel between planets if you have a ship. You can make the jump to light speed and go from star system to the next.
[In a few hours one could go from one world to the next, learn new things, or evade the First Order. A little of both in Rey's case. Learning about the Resistance, about Luke Skywalker, and evading the First Order in one go.
She stayed quiet, taking in Cisco's words. There were pros and cons to being here, but her drive to leave was there. She needed to leave to find Luke Skywalker. It was starting to feel like she had been ripped out of where she was supposed to be, and dropped in a new place. Similar to when she was first left on Jakku. It was beyond her control, but instead of waiting for something to happen, she wanted to make it happen herself. It was frustrating, but she would have to make it work. What other choice does she have?]
Gummy bears? [By her tone and skepticism, it's clear such a thing isn't on Jakku.] No, we don't have anything like that. We get portions for the parts we bring in, I was a scavenger. [Working all day in the hot sun, looking for parts and cleaning them, only to have her fate be determined by someone else.
She looks at the gummy bears and reaches to take only one.] Thank you. [it's a rarity that someone was willing to share their food, and even having one gummy bear..] It's...chewy, but very sweet. It's...nice. Do they all taste the same?[Very chewy, but not tough? Sweet and maybe a bit tangy? This probably sounds so odd to someone who's used to such sweets.]
no subject
That is so awesome. Seriously, on my planet we've barely made it to our moon, and that's only about 240,000 miles.
[ He watches, encouraging smile still in place, as she takes a piece of the candy and chews on it. Her expression stays fairly neutral, and her praise is somewhat faint, but it's hard to say if she is pretending to enjoy them some to be polite, or if she is just a restrained sort of person. ]
The different colors are different flavors. They're all sweet, though.
[ He doesn't want her thinking she is going to come across one that is savory or whatever, which would be pretty weird. But something she had said before she tried the candy has just sunk in, and Cisco asks: ]
Parts? Parts of what? Machines?
[ It seems the logical answer to him, but he realizes that he's biased to think that because he's an engineer and thinks about machines automatically in a lot of situations. ]
Did they assign you a job here?
no subject
Really? Just to the moon? [Wow, that's...such an unfortunate thing.] So you don't do trades with other planets? Or go to other star systems?
[Even being suck on a desert planet she knew of the other worlds out there. Other planets with their own histories, especially during the time of the Empire.
As for the gummy bears...to know they have a different flavors was interesting. She looks at him then back at the candy and tries another piece, a red one this one and tries. Well...it's sweeter and it makes her smile. Once one gets over the texture of it..it's quite good?] No, there isn't anything like this on Jakku. It is sweet though, and good.
[Congrats Cisco, you made Rey like a gummy bear. She won't take another one though. He's been far too kind to let her try it twice.]
No, star ships. There's a star ship graveyard. I would look for parts, something that could be used again for another ship or scrap metal. Take those parts and trade them in for portions--food. [She has to be careful with her words, making sure she uses common phrases. But, could he imagine it? Working in the desert, under a hot sun for parts and then having someone determine what was valuable enough for food?]
No, they didn't assign me a job. I can't remember if they asked for my skill set or not. [And even if they did, she would only say she was a scavenger, nothing else.] Do you have a job here? Did you find one or did they give one to you?
no subject
[ He is oddly embarrassed, thinking about how primitive Central City must seem to Rey. Objectively, he knows it isn't anything he has control over but he feels ashamed to be from somewhere so limited - probably residual bullshit over the way Eobard had sneered about 2014 being barbaric times. ]
That... sounds like it could either be super awesome or the crappiest job ever. I've been doing some of that, since I got here. Looking for parts and scrap out in the ruins outside the wall. Kinda blows, not gonna lie.
[ He doesn't want to sound too harsh about it, because for all he knows, she loves scavenging. Maybe that's her best life, or her chosen career or whatever. But being paid directly in food sounds, to him at least, like a pretty stressful way to live. Maybe it's more of a commune, simple-life vibe? Except no, that sort of thing never really works in practice. Probably subsistence living and hard times. ]
Yeah, they offered me one, and I took it, but I think there's plenty of people who find a job all on their own.
no subject
Maybe they just need a nudge? But, it's probably better in some aspects. No galaxy gangs or people trying to take over the galaxy. [Like the First Order so...]
It wasn't the best. If there was a sandstorm that lasted for days, you would have to work twice as hard to find something to trade in. [So, not the best job ever, but she had gotten used to it. She learned to survive, and now she would do so again. She does perk up hearing Cisco has managed to find scraps and such. No one mentioned the ruins to her before, at least not what she can recall.]
Scraps? Like metal? Or, building material? [Because if it's any of those options, she would gather those items for him, maybe work out a deal.]
What job did they assign you? [Curious because, well, she needs one too at this rate. Jim said she might be suited for the perimeter guard, which was very tempting at this point.]

[ One of the things Cisco has found strangest, and ultimately most appealing about this place, is the way everyone seems to genuinely embrace difference. They are all displaced, here. All come from different places, different cultures. No one group has all the power, and there is not enough consensus amongst the various diverse inhabitants for any biases or bullshit to develop. Which is very different to what Cisco's used to. If he somehow ended up back in Central City tomorrow, he's pretty sure he wouldn't like it as much, now. ]
Wow, yep, that sounds super stressful and uncool.
[ It does somewhat put a damper on the offer that he had just been thinking about making. If she hated scavenging, she probably won't appreciate ending up doing it in a new place, will she? Maybe he shouldn't ask, after all... ]
Like metal. And machine parts. The same stuff it sounds like you were scavenging, only from the buildings in the abandoned parts of the city, not star ships. See, I design tech for the emergency services. You know, policemen, firefighters... the people who help when there's a crisis. But getting supplies can be tricky. So... sometimes I gotta go out and just look around.
no subject
We can cause problems on our own, but there are others who do just the same--just different species. [Look at the Empire, humans did that and the First Order was doing the same. Though, there were other gangs made up of alien and human...so really, there's plenty of ways to start wars, but humans happen to be involved in a lot of them...so there's that.
Yes, her old life really wasn't the best. She doesn't have hatred for it or anything. She would prefer not to do it again and go back to her original plan of training under Luke, but since that's pretty much on the back burner now....she has to find a new way to bring income. So if she has to scavenge, she won't mind it.]
There's an abandoned city? [So someone really over looked that part for her. Her mind is going and she think she may have found a job? Possibly?]
If you need help getting those parts or supplies, I could go with you. I wouldn't mind. You could look for materials and I could look to see what could be used on a ship. Or, useful. Depending on the part, it could work for one thing or another...[Forgive her, she's starting to get a bit excited and also a bit relieved. Her problem for a job may have solved itself.]
If I had my speeder, it would make transportation easier...could try to build one again I suppose...
no subject
[ So, from the sound of it, Rey is human, too. Interesting. Cisco hadn't wanted to assume - he's run into all sorts of people here who look human but are actually something entirely different.
Her offer to go scavenging with him - and even moreso her obvious excitement over the prospect, are a huge relief to Cisco. He smiles, wide and bright, and starts talking excitedly as soon as she's done: ]
Are you serious? 'Cause I would really love the help. And, I mean, I could pay you. Not in food or whatever like Jakku, I mean actually pay you money, I'm making way more than I know what to do with right now but I'm kinda overworked doing it all on my own. And by kinda I mean seriously. Just designing stuff and testing it and then fabricating it is a full-time job, and spending all this time tramping around looking for supplies is just extra on top of that.
[ He pauses, though, that smile dimming a little as he considers the logistics, the reality of it. Rey had sounded completely surprised there even is an abandoned city. Which means she hasn't been out past the wall, and might not know... ]
You, um. You actually might not wanna go out there, though. It can be sort of dangerous. Sometimes the buildings have rotted floorboards or they're falling down 'cause of vines and whatever. It's not always safe. There are monsters and stuff. Giant lizards, carnivorous plants. That's kinda why I hate it so much. It's not just about being too busy.
no subject
Yeah, there's a long history of different battles or wars. Wouldn't know all of them, but the last war was between the Rebellion and the Empire. [Because who didn't talk about that? Who didn't whisper a tale about the Rebellion, of Luke Skywalker or Han Solo? Granted, Cisco doesn't know about the two main players in that war, or the one that the galaxy was now facing, but it was just an example.
There's an energetic nod of her head. Yes, she could do scavenger work for him. It was second nature to her by now. He would just need to be specific for what he needed. The comm--phones could be used for that. Sending photos or calling each other to up date each other. Or, simply going together.]
I can handle myself. On Jakku there were sinking fields, and other things to avoid. [Like the other scavengers, but really, if she could handle having Stormtroopers firing at her, battling Kylo Ren, and piloting the Falcon, the abandoned city would be fine.]
Would it be okay to work for you part time? Or would you need me full time? [Because she was considering joining the Perimeter Guard, but she still needed a tour of it first. Which reminded her, she needed to send Jim a text about that.]
When you want me to start? [Best to know now to figure out what else she needed to take of before the month was up.]
no subject
Sounds very big and epic and scary. Who won? And how long ago was it?
[ She sounds confident about her ability to defend herself and deal with dangers, and Cisco wants to believe her. His life would be a lot more convenient if he just could. But he's seen Barry overestimate himself a hundred times, and he's too paranoid a person to react with entire confidence and relief. ]
Okay. I mean... if you're sure. I- you just seem really nice and I would for real feel like the shittiest person on the whole moon if you went out there and got hurt and it was because of me.
[ But if he has doubts, they are not strong enough that he doesn't go on talking out the specifics of the job with her. ]
Part time would probably be best, if that works for you. I've only got so much storage space in my workshop. You could start whenever. I guess I should... figure out some paperwork or whatever. Make it official. I was planning on going out past the wall this Friday. We could go together, I could... show you some of the spots I usually go, all of that? And if you're still game after that we'll work out wages and a schedule and all that boring adult shit.
no subject
You're...worried about me? [Her eyebrows knit together in confusion. They had just met and already he was concerned. Then again, Finn wanted to aid her when the First Order ships were flying down on Jakku and continued to hold hands. They developed a friendship and he cared enough, after some time. But for Cisco...he was worried right from the get go. Could it be that he was this trusting of a person?]
I mean, I'm very sure I can handle myself. I have my staff and I know how to fight. [People always assumed because of her smaller frame and her pretty (their words not hers) face that she wasn't trouble until she had to defend what was hers. She wasn't a pushover.] We can go together, scavenge for what you need and if any trouble comes along, I can take care of it.
[It sounded like a fair trade to her, especially if he was willing to let her do it part time. Which meant, she could still see about visiting Jim and asking him for a tour of the Perimeter Guard.]
No, that works out fine. It gives me the chance to do other things and visit the library for more information. [She could handle 2 jobs, it shouldn't be too difficult, and it would be nice to not have to rely on scavenging for a sole income.]
Friday would work out fine. Do you prefer early in the morning before it gets hot or later? [Already her mind was working on a list of items she would need to bring: water, small packets of food, and possibly a bag assuming he didn't have one already.]
no subject
[ Cisco answers with an air of faint confusion, as if he is baffled by the thought of not being worried about her. The logic of it is perfectly obvious, to him. According to Cisco's view of the world, putting a random stranger in danger is irresponsible, and if he did it without warning them first, that would make him a pretty shitty person. Besides, he is a worrier. It's just how he approaches the world.
But her reply makes it sound like maybe his concern is coming off as condescending, and Cisco definitely doesn't want to underestimate her, either. He's been underestimated himself enough times to know just how irritating it can get. His eyes flick over to the staff when she mentions it, and yeah, you could do some serious damage with that thing. When she insists she knows how to fight, he raises his hands in concession, saying: ]
Well then you're a step ahead of me, 'cause I'm absolutely terrible at fighting. Very much a run and hide kinda guy, myself.
[ And the rest of the arrangements seem to fall into place easily - she's not afraid of the danger, she wants to work part time, and her question about when they should leave tells Cisco (if he wasn't sure before) that she almost definitely isn't lying about her experience at scavenging. ]
How about midmorning, let's say 10? Lemme get your number and I can text you in case there's any complications...
[ And he gets out his phone so the two of them can exchange info. ]
no subject
Do you care about all your business partners? [It's a foreign concept to her, and she's trying to rationalize it in a way that's familiar. Does he care because she would be working for him? Or does he care because they just met? It's hard to grasp considering the conditions she grew up in. It would make sense for him to care if she's helping him, protecting him, but after meeting so soon? No.]
There's nothing wrong with running and hiding. It means you'll live another day. [Hopefully, assuming he didn't get caught or anything like that. But, he would have her looking out for the two of them, so it wouldn't be bad. If anything, she had the lightsaber, and the Force to guide her, that should be more than enough...hopefully.]
That would work. [Gives her enough time to get things together and... oh, the phone. She sheepishly looks down.]
I don't know my number, not yet. [Right...she could make calls, and having a number to dial into would help. Nonetheless, she does take out her phone and attempts to figure it out...just give her a moment or so.]
no subject
He laughs, half at himself, a touch of his embarrassment and confusion coming out in it. ]
I haven't... had business partners ever before, actually. I mean, coworkers, I guess- is that... the same thing? You know what, forget it.
[ Cisco is pretty much in agreement on the whole running and hiding thing, but the fact that Rey talks about it in the context of living for another day is just another illuminating piece of the puzzle. He watches her pull out her phone and struggle with it, not saying anything for a few moments until it's clear she's not struggling to remember instructions told her, but instead just doesn't know what she's doing at all. Carefully, he says: ]
Here, lemme show you.
[ Rather than take her phone out of her hands, which would be pretty rude, Cisco just leans over closer with his own, turning the screen so she can see as he taps through, slowly and deliberately, to the settings and the correct tab to find his phone number. He's had a lot of practice by now, teaching people how to use their phones, and it comes to him easily. ]
Your setup should be the same, try it out.
no subject
[There's skepticism on Rey's part, if only because Unkar Plutt never seemed to care whether she lived or died. Whatever she brought into him, he decided on how much or how little she was paid. She lived in a world where no one really gave much of a care for one another. Sure, some helped her out, but the majority of people only looked out for themselves, they had to. Maybe it's the same way she grew to care for Finn and he grew to care for her, but that was after hours of being with one another and fighting together.
But, if he wanted to drop the subject, she could.
They needed to exchange information and Rey's mind is trying to recall how to work her device correctly. She hasn't had much time to tinker and play around with it. Only having to send out texts or make replies, but that was it. She never had to call anyone, let alone look for her own number. Cisco is very patient though...he guides her, showing her what to do to reveal her number.]
I think...that's it, right? [She taps on settings and then the right tab to reveal her number.] And if I want to add yours, I just go back, Contacts...and I think there's a plus symbol there. [Okay, it's starting to come to her.]
Thank you. [For showing her and for being patient...and a whole bunch of other things.]
no subject
So he gets her squared away with his number, smiles, and says: ]
Sure. And, like, if you ever need anything, I mean... in a non-job related way, or you're having trouble settling in, just shoot me a text, alright?
no subject
I understand, and should you need anything, let me know.
[That seemed fair, right? As long as they were willing to do things for one another (no strings attached, hopefully), then it would be fine to contact each other just to..check up on each other? A somewhat strange concept...but it was nice to be able to know she could speak to someone else if she needed too.
They exchanged numbers and Rey got back up to stand on her feet. She told Cisco she had to go, but thanked him again.
She couldn't wait to go out and do something normal, something that was once part of her old life.]
