a stranger's bed

As a lead in to September, Riverview's ♥ Month of Romance, this is a completely optional mingle that will cause affected characters to end up in each other's beds. There are various options for both established and new CR. While it's easiest for characters still living in Communal Housing, anyone who has moved to their own homes can be affected and end up finding their way to Communal Housing, or within their own housing.

Residents of the Quarantine may notice that various businesses selling food and drink - cafés, diners, bakeries, restaurants, and other such establishments - are heavily advertising a new flavor that's supposed to be the biggest thing since pumpkin spice. A flavor additive that's said to subtly change the flavor of whatever the diner is eating or drinking to optimize the dish, drink, dessert, or any other food item it is added to for each person's individual taste, it's been selling like wildfire and is the latest trend.

After the cause of the rash of amnesia was revealed to be plant-related, sellers are keeping the origin of the secret ingredient very close to their chests, since it is a derivative of a recently-discovered plant dubbed chameleonis. Depending on the method of ingestion, this additive can have a variety of unexpected side effects, but only once the person who has ingested it becomes sleepy. Methods of ingestion include:

● Ingestion: Beverage: When ingested as a flavor shot to drinks ranging from sodas to coffee to alcoholic beverages, it can cause a desire for closeness to a particular other person. Affected characters end up crawling into bed with that specific other character when they become sleepy.

● Ingestion: Food: When ingested as a flavoring added to a baked good or other meal, it can cause an intense desire for body heat when the character becomes drowsy. It won't matter to an affected character who is providing the body heat, so long as it's someone, and they will end up sleepily crawling into someone else's bed for warmth.

● Inhalation: When inhaled ether from a steaming hot beverage or soup, or as an essential oil or aroma from a bakery, it can cause disorientation when a character becomes sleepy. Affected characters either aren't sure which bed is theirs and simply crawl into the closest one, occupied or not, or become convinced that another character's bed is their own.

Feel free to post up a top-level for your own character either affected and invading a random bed or unaffected but open to having their bed invaded by affected characters, or tag around to other people's top-levels.

Okay! I promise I won't say I'll eat dreadful things just because I'm being polite. Happy?

Good. (Satisfied, she settles back into the snuggle.)

I didn't mean to make him eat dreadful things, mind you. I was just... Trying to liven things up.

Oh, is that why you brought those flavoured syrups? To liven up the cheese?

(She's teasing now, eyes bright.)

Yes - I thought, this goat cheese is not strong enough. Clearly it needs more.

That one was my favourite. You have good taste!

And you're not just saying that, right?

(She yawns and snuggles even closer, clearly not really worried.)

No, I'm being serious!

(Lucretia gives her a little pat on the side as she snuggles closer, reassuring.)

I've had a wonderful evening.

Me too. One of the nicest nights since I have been here.

It's really nice to have normal things to do like this. Sometimes it just gets so weird around here, you know?

(She chuckles softly.)

I think we both more than qualify for living weird lives. But I know what you mean.

True. You know, that's why I probably think being here is normal– I've forgotten what normal is.

Me too. It's...a little hard to get used to, if I am being honest. I haven't stayed on one planet for more than several months in years. And even when I was - if I got the itch to explore or to leave, I always could.

I know. I keep expecting something to happen.

(For now, she supposes, it's like taking a year after retrieving the light early in a cycle, except without some of the others being there at all, and also way more infighting amongst the few that are. A bad relaxation year.)

I couldn't keep my eyes off the sky for the first week being here, even though I knew the light wasn't coming. Do you have a favourite planet that you've visited?

Betazed. (She says without hesitation.) One of my best friends is from there - it's a gorgeous planet. Warm, lots of lakes and waterfalls.

It sounds beautiful. (Aw, Lucretia wants to go. She doesn't have anything to hand to write with, but she'll try to remember that– Betazed.)

Were you there for long?

It's a member planet of the Federation so I have been there several times! Though I have never stayed much more than a week or so.

Like a vacation planet. (Real hashtag beach year vibes, nice.) Always good to keep one of those in your back pocket, so to speak.

A little like that, yes. (She chuckles.) Though there is a true vacation planet, Risa. It was terraformed and designed as a resort location.

I can't decide if that sounds lovely or horrible.

(Probably depends on when it was terraformed. Good to know space capitalism is still thriving.) Though at the same time, I would really relish finding a vacation planet, I think. Take a break from it all.

(She would be severely offended at being called a capitalist - and if Lucretia ever goes shopping with her, she will quickly discover how inept with money Beverly can be. Though it's not the capitalism angle that she thinks Lucretia is worrying about - it's the colonialism.)

Don't worry, the Risans chose to do it centuries ago, long before the Federation was in existence. (She yawns again.) And definitely before humans got our act together.

Oh! That's good, then.

(Beverly's yawn reminds her of how sleepy she is: how are they still having this kind of conversation? Lucretia giggles weakly and presses her face against Beverly's shoulder, voice a little muffled.)

You know, when normal people get drunk they– they cry, or talk about their feelings, or dance a lot, not talk about... expansionism.

We can dance if you want to.

(Though it's clear neither of them are moving any time soon. Beverly doesn't think she's ever been so comfortable in her entire life.)

Mmm, maybe later.

(Much, much later.) If I ever feel like getting up, which I won't.

Me either.

(She hums contentedly.)

I could stay here forever.

(If she wasn't drunk and half-influenced still by potion, Lucretia would have some real intense butterflies right now.)

Same. You're nice to hug.
