a stranger's bed

As a lead in to September, Riverview's ♥ Month of Romance, this is a completely optional mingle that will cause affected characters to end up in each other's beds. There are various options for both established and new CR. While it's easiest for characters still living in Communal Housing, anyone who has moved to their own homes can be affected and end up finding their way to Communal Housing, or within their own housing.

Residents of the Quarantine may notice that various businesses selling food and drink - cafés, diners, bakeries, restaurants, and other such establishments - are heavily advertising a new flavor that's supposed to be the biggest thing since pumpkin spice. A flavor additive that's said to subtly change the flavor of whatever the diner is eating or drinking to optimize the dish, drink, dessert, or any other food item it is added to for each person's individual taste, it's been selling like wildfire and is the latest trend.

After the cause of the rash of amnesia was revealed to be plant-related, sellers are keeping the origin of the secret ingredient very close to their chests, since it is a derivative of a recently-discovered plant dubbed chameleonis. Depending on the method of ingestion, this additive can have a variety of unexpected side effects, but only once the person who has ingested it becomes sleepy. Methods of ingestion include:

● Ingestion: Beverage: When ingested as a flavor shot to drinks ranging from sodas to coffee to alcoholic beverages, it can cause a desire for closeness to a particular other person. Affected characters end up crawling into bed with that specific other character when they become sleepy.

● Ingestion: Food: When ingested as a flavoring added to a baked good or other meal, it can cause an intense desire for body heat when the character becomes drowsy. It won't matter to an affected character who is providing the body heat, so long as it's someone, and they will end up sleepily crawling into someone else's bed for warmth.

● Inhalation: When inhaled ether from a steaming hot beverage or soup, or as an essential oil or aroma from a bakery, it can cause disorientation when a character becomes sleepy. Affected characters either aren't sure which bed is theirs and simply crawl into the closest one, occupied or not, or become convinced that another character's bed is their own.

Feel free to post up a top-level for your own character either affected and invading a random bed or unaffected but open to having their bed invaded by affected characters, or tag around to other people's top-levels.

If it served as well, I'd be in it, I assure you. [Thor rolls over again to look at her.] My bed is much colder, much lonelier.

Well, I'm sorry about that, but you can't just go crawling into a woman's bed without asking!

That certainly is true. [Thor says, and suddenly critical thinking is kicking in once more.] I do not recall why I thought this would be appropriate.

(She's still annoyed, but there's a hint of worry creeping into her voice as well.)

What do you mean? Do you think... you inhaled some of those spores that were causing problems a few weeks ago? I thought we'd taken care of that...

No.. well. Yes, I did, but I recovered from that. [He doesn't seem particularly worried, just confused.]

I'm in my right mind, I think, I just felt a strong compulsion to be in a warm bed and.. here I am. [He shrugs, he's also not moving.]

[She frowns and mutters.] Strange.

[She reaches over to her bedside table and grabs her tricorder.]

Are you experiencing any other symptoms?

Well.. [Thor trails off, raising a brow at her tricorder before he continues.]

A little drowsy, I don't feel cold but I want to feel body heat all the same. I'm normally not such a heavy sleeper, either.

Hmm.

[She flips open her tricorder and presses a few buttons. It hums softly as she starts to scan him. He is... certainly not human, that's for sure. In fact, he seems almost close to a Zalkonian, with their regenerative ability.

Also he's really old.]

Now I don't have your species on record so it's hard to be 100% sure but I don't see any neurological problems or thyroid issues or anything like that....

[The scan is still going though, so something else might crop up still.]

[Thor stays still during the scan. Partly because he's comfortable where he is, partly because he's trying to figure out what she's doing.

Eventually, it starts to come together.]

You don't have Asgardians? [He sits up a little, expression almost offended.]

Could it be something I ate?

Not that I'm aware of - depends, I suppose, on where your homeworld is in relation to Earth.

[She frowns at the tricorder.]

You know... you may be right. There is a trace of something odd here... nothing dangerous I don't think.

It is part of the nine realms, connected by the bridge. I've spent quite a long time on Earth, as well.

[He says it conversationally, it's nice to have things in common.]

Well, I don't think I ate anything out of the ordinary... Although I did try the new flavouring they've been boasting- but so many people were consuming it.

Hmm... I don't see-

[Suddenly her eyes go wide. Lucretia. She had chalked up climbing into Lucretia's bed to drunkeness and well... she likes Lucretia. A lot. It's not that much of a stretch. But they had so much of that flavoring too...]

Oh!

Did you partake in some as well? I'd say it was well worth the results. So very warm and comforting.. I am beginning to see the connection, actually.

[She sighs.]

I did. Not tonight but... it was nice.

[She'll concede that at least. It's impossible to stay mad at him, given the situation, but still she has to try to figure out how to get him out of her bed.]

It is very nice.

[Thor agrees, and he obviously considers their conversation over because he's settling down again and letting his eyes fall shut.

At least he's not snoring yet.]

Thor!

[Knowing that she has zero chance of physically moving him, she instead reaches over and whips the blankets off of him.]

[Thor awakens with a start, followed by a tragic, mournful cry when she rips the blankets away from him.

He curls on his side, still reluctant to leave the bed, but he's progressing to that stage. At least his bed has blankets.]

How can you be so cruel? [He really doesn't mean it, but he sounds every bit as dramatic as his question is.]

[It takes every fiber of self-control that Beverly has within her not to roll her eyes.]

I'm very sorry, but there's simply not enough room for us both.

Very well then. [Thor says with a huff of all things. He rises from the bed and steps out of it, putting his hands on his hips.]

I shall find a bed big enough for two, and I shall sleep in it without you. [By which he means Loki's bed.]

Sleep well. [He says, because he's not a complete ass. He turns and exits her room.]

[Is... that... supposed to make her jealous? She shakes her head in disbelief, but there's the tiniest hint of a smile in her expression. Viking gods indeed!]
