a stranger's bed

As a lead in to September, Riverview's ♥ Month of Romance, this is a completely optional mingle that will cause affected characters to end up in each other's beds. There are various options for both established and new CR. While it's easiest for characters still living in Communal Housing, anyone who has moved to their own homes can be affected and end up finding their way to Communal Housing, or within their own housing.

Residents of the Quarantine may notice that various businesses selling food and drink - cafés, diners, bakeries, restaurants, and other such establishments - are heavily advertising a new flavor that's supposed to be the biggest thing since pumpkin spice. A flavor additive that's said to subtly change the flavor of whatever the diner is eating or drinking to optimize the dish, drink, dessert, or any other food item it is added to for each person's individual taste, it's been selling like wildfire and is the latest trend.

After the cause of the rash of amnesia was revealed to be plant-related, sellers are keeping the origin of the secret ingredient very close to their chests, since it is a derivative of a recently-discovered plant dubbed chameleonis. Depending on the method of ingestion, this additive can have a variety of unexpected side effects, but only once the person who has ingested it becomes sleepy. Methods of ingestion include:

● Ingestion: Beverage: When ingested as a flavor shot to drinks ranging from sodas to coffee to alcoholic beverages, it can cause a desire for closeness to a particular other person. Affected characters end up crawling into bed with that specific other character when they become sleepy.

● Ingestion: Food: When ingested as a flavoring added to a baked good or other meal, it can cause an intense desire for body heat when the character becomes drowsy. It won't matter to an affected character who is providing the body heat, so long as it's someone, and they will end up sleepily crawling into someone else's bed for warmth.

● Inhalation: When inhaled ether from a steaming hot beverage or soup, or as an essential oil or aroma from a bakery, it can cause disorientation when a character becomes sleepy. Affected characters either aren't sure which bed is theirs and simply crawl into the closest one, occupied or not, or become convinced that another character's bed is their own.

Feel free to post up a top-level for your own character either affected and invading a random bed or unaffected but open to having their bed invaded by affected characters, or tag around to other people's top-levels.

[ Loki stares at him before grumbling. ]

Take the damn bed.

[ He slides off to find himself a seat. He's irritated now. It should not be that easy for Riverview to circumvent his wards and yet, here Ivar was. Right in the throes of an old nightmare which he had witnessed.

It sets his teeth on edge and his fingers flex unconsciously. ]

Thank you. I will.

[Of course, now that he's been woken up with a knife at his throat, it's a little harder to drift back off to sleep. The adrenaline has finally kicked in even if it doesn't show on his face. He shifts so he's lying on his side, not bothering to sit up just yet, watching Loki sit there.]

I would have thought a god would be a more sound sleeper.

[ His lips twitch at the boldness of the statement, though there is little humour in his expression. Another thing that separates Loki from the Asgardians. Or it is simply the sum of his experiences now, sleeping in corners of the galaxy. Fear rarely lets one rest. ]

The other gods are warriors. I am a survivor.

[Ivar props his head up with one hand. He's stupidly fearless the way all Vikings are. There's no place in his world for weakness and being afraid of things is definitely a weakness.]

I get it.

[No one had ever expected Ivar to survive, let alone become as tough as he had, now the leader of an army.]

What were you dreaming about?

Dark things that would give you nightmares.

[ If Ivar was expecting a straight answer, he certainly wasn't going to get it from Loki. He settles himself on a chair, running his long fingers through his hair. ]

Do not mention this to Thor. I do not need his input on my sleep habits.

I highly doubt that.

[In order to have nightmares, one had to be scared of things. There was precious little that Ivar feared anymore. Maybe someday, when he grew up a little, he'd finally get it. Or maybe not. Hard to tell.]

It's none of my business.

[ Loki snorts. ]

You doubt because you do not know. Even here, your enemies are still men and appear as men.

[Ivar still looks a little bit skeptical. He wonders what is so terrible that it could make a god afraid.]

And yours appear as...?

[ Loki shoots him a dirty look. ]

Is this a line of questioning you wish to pursue?

[Ivar will just ignore that look. He's a persistent little bastard.]

I'm curious.

[He's also going to ignore that saying about curiosity and cats.]

[ He resists the urge to sigh. Loki had forgotten that. It was one of the qualities he had enjoyed of the old Norsemen. He rubs his temple, deliberating over his words. Then he decides against it completely, waving his hand, green magic seeping through the movements as a large worm-like creature appears, resting comfortably on the floor of Loki's room. ]

This is far larger than you might think. About the size of one of the buildings in Riverview.

[Ivar watches the magic with intent interest. He always liked it when the magic users around here showed off their skills. He watches the creature, one hand resting under his chin as he tries to picture it at full size. No matter that he was raised on tales of the Midgard Serpent, it's still hard for the human mind to visualize things on such a massive scale.]

What is it? Where did it come from?

A leviathan. It hails from some ill begotten moon.

[ His tone is flippant. Leviathans don't given Loki nightmares, but it brings his point across. He's hardly going to give voice to the cold fears of a mad titan. ]

It is a mindless monster. It will only heed the call of its master.

[Ivar wonders how something that big can even be fought against. It seems like it would swallow someone whole or simply crush someone with its massive bulk.]

Someone can control that thing?

[ Don't even think about it Ivar. ]

To a certain extent, yes. I hesitate to call his master a person though.

[Hey, this is along the same lines of what happens if you give a mouse a cookie. If you present a Viking with something that looks like a challenge, inevitably he'll want to fight it.]

What is it? Another god?

A monster, more like. There must be balance to the scale.

[ Pot, kettle but Loki doesn't care. It's not as though Ivar will ever run into the Chitauri anyway. He slouches on his chair, not sure if he's annoyed by the constant questions or not. ]

Of course.

[Monsters were as prevalent in Norse stories as the gods themselves. One day, Ragnarok would come, and they would kill everything in their path. Apparently satisfied, he can't think of what else he should ask the god, so he falls silent, sinking back down on the pillow.]

[ Loki laughs softly, like rainfall. He gets up to pull the blankets over Ivar in a rare fit of genuine feeling. ]

Sleep well, little viking. There will be plenty of monsters for you in your dreams.
