a stranger's bed

As a lead in to September, Riverview's ♥ Month of Romance, this is a completely optional mingle that will cause affected characters to end up in each other's beds. There are various options for both established and new CR. While it's easiest for characters still living in Communal Housing, anyone who has moved to their own homes can be affected and end up finding their way to Communal Housing, or within their own housing.

Residents of the Quarantine may notice that various businesses selling food and drink - cafés, diners, bakeries, restaurants, and other such establishments - are heavily advertising a new flavor that's supposed to be the biggest thing since pumpkin spice. A flavor additive that's said to subtly change the flavor of whatever the diner is eating or drinking to optimize the dish, drink, dessert, or any other food item it is added to for each person's individual taste, it's been selling like wildfire and is the latest trend.

After the cause of the rash of amnesia was revealed to be plant-related, sellers are keeping the origin of the secret ingredient very close to their chests, since it is a derivative of a recently-discovered plant dubbed chameleonis. Depending on the method of ingestion, this additive can have a variety of unexpected side effects, but only once the person who has ingested it becomes sleepy. Methods of ingestion include:

● Ingestion: Beverage: When ingested as a flavor shot to drinks ranging from sodas to coffee to alcoholic beverages, it can cause a desire for closeness to a particular other person. Affected characters end up crawling into bed with that specific other character when they become sleepy.

● Ingestion: Food: When ingested as a flavoring added to a baked good or other meal, it can cause an intense desire for body heat when the character becomes drowsy. It won't matter to an affected character who is providing the body heat, so long as it's someone, and they will end up sleepily crawling into someone else's bed for warmth.

● Inhalation: When inhaled ether from a steaming hot beverage or soup, or as an essential oil or aroma from a bakery, it can cause disorientation when a character becomes sleepy. Affected characters either aren't sure which bed is theirs and simply crawl into the closest one, occupied or not, or become convinced that another character's bed is their own.

Feel free to post up a top-level for your own character either affected and invading a random bed or unaffected but open to having their bed invaded by affected characters, or tag around to other people's top-levels.

[It works well enough, because Magnus laughs.]

You sure? Don't feel obligated to.

[He's just being polite. He'd much rather hang out and talk with Taako a while. It'd help both of them to put the whole ordeal behind them.]

[There we go! Much better.

Taako hops out of bed easily; trance rather than sleep means that he doesn't get particularly groggy in the morning, and walks over to offer Magnus a hand up.]

I'm gonna be cooking anyway, pretty sure it won't kill me to make a little extra.

[He accepts Taako's hand and uses it to boost himself off of the floor. ~~About time. What was he doing down there for so long.~~]

Thanks. And as sure as you're cool with it, I'd love some free breakfast.

[Same thing he was doing stuck under a crystal mirror for like half an hour.]

Hey, who said anything about free? Maybe I'm gonna make you pay for it.

[Now that things are officially Not Weird, Taako feels like it's totally fine for him to flash Magnus a grin as he heads out the bedroom door, making his way towards the kitchen.]

[He laughs again at Taako's jokes, but when Taako turns away from him, he lets out a held breath. He's nervous.

It's easy for Taako to slip into joking routine with Magnus because Taako has all those memories up in his brain-thing. For Magnus, he's just met Taako a few weeks ago. He's been aware that there's some kind of history between them, but it wasn't until now that he gave any wonder to what that history might've been. And waking up next to Taako, uninvited, could mean a whole lot more than just a weird sleepwalking incident.

So, that's reason one for being nervous. Reason two was that he felt kinda nice waking up the way he did.

He promptly steps on all of this emotion and follows Taako into the kitchen.]

What's on the menu?

[By the time Magnus arrives in the kitchen, there's already a bowl out, along with a pan and a handful of ingredients as Taako gets to work.

At some point, he seems to have acquired a hair tie, since he's pulled his hair up into a loose bun.]

Blueberry and ricotta pancakes sound good? I'll fry up some bacon to have with it.

[He knows how Magnus feels about bacon.]

Sounds great to me, whatever ricotta is!

[He's surprising himself, being this cool in the midst of his newly acquired dilemma.]

Where are the plates at, again?

[He's starting to pick up a routine of attempting to help out whenever Taako cooks. Mostly with the dishes and drinks, though. He knows he shouldn't get in the way of Art.]

[Taako huffs a laugh, still doing his best to act like this is a perfectly normal morning that neither of them should feel awkward about.]

It's cheese, but not like, cheesy.

[That definitely makes sense.

He takes a moment stir everything together, and then while the frypan is heating up, Taako sets the pot of coffee on.]

Cupboard to your left, if you wanna get maple syrup and, shit, there should be a punnet of strawberries in the fridge, you can grab those too.

Like, one of those fancy cheeses? The kind you wouldn't find in a Fantasy Pizza Hut?

[He pulls a couple plates down from the cupboard, then navigates to the fridge for syrup and strawberries. From there he starts kinda setting up the table, placing each of the plates at a chair, arranging the strawberries and syrup bottle between them. It's actually kinda cute? Maybe?]

[It feels like a morning on the Starblaster, Taako and Magnus having stumbled out of whoever's quarters they spent the night in, getting breakfast ready for the rest of the crew. Lup would come in and give him a look, or high five Magnus in a way that wasn't at all subtle.

It feels like everything is just... a few feet to the left, so close to being right but so far away, at the same time.]

Only if it was like, the world's nicest Fantasy Pizza Hut.

I don't think the world's nicest Fantasy Pizza Hut is even gonna be fancy enough for your fancy cheeses.

[Satisfied with the amount he's contributed to this meal, he stands at the edge of the kitchen, in conversing range of Taako. He's glad that Taako is occupied with cooking right now, as the action adds kind of an awkwardness-buffer to the situation.]

[There's a reason Taako tends to have a lot of difficult conversations in the kitchen. He likes having something to do with his hands, something to keep him busy and distracted, especially when his thoughts are liable to wander, as they are now.]

I dunno if you're fancy enough for my fancy cheese, my man.

[He says it with a grin, as he flips the pancakes over, making sure they're perfectly cooked.]

I readily accept your cheese challenge, my good sir!

[He edges into the kitchen a bit more, not enough to disrupt Taako (he thinks), but enough to get a good look at what's going on.] How're the pancakes comin' along?

Careful, you'll get invited to wine and cheese night next, we go all out for that one.

[Taako is used to working around another body in the kitchen and although Lup doesn't take up anywhere near as much space as Magnus does, it's still not any kind of issue.

There's bacon sizzling in one pan, and the pancakes are cooking nicely in another, at this point all that's really needed is keeping an eye on them so they don't burn.]

Oh, no. I'd hate that.

[Sarcasm, obvi.

He moves forward just a smidge to get a whiff of the food and oooh, boy, it is good.]

Hot damn, that smells amazing. How long are you gonna make me wait for these cakes?

[Taako, in true chef fashion, threateningly brandishes a spatula at Magnus.]

We're gonna have to teach you some patience, huh?

[With a wink, Taako turns back to the stove and starts putting everything on a plate, which he then mage hands over to the table while he does a super quick clean up (like five seconds, because he's also hungry).]

[He's glad Taako turned away after that wink. It caught him off guard and he thinks he may have blushed.

Well, whatever! He joins Taako at the table and does his best not to inhale his whole plate in one gulp.]

Shit, seriously, this is good. You're spoiling me with all this good food, Taako.

[Taako has a bit more class than Magnus, and starts with a small bite, pleased with how they turned out even if he knows that Magnus would probably have been fine with plain pancakes and syrup.]

That's just how I roll, bubbale. It'd be like, an actual fucking challenge for me to cook something bad.

Hey, I believe it.

[After a few more bites, he actually manages to take a definitive pause from eating to speak directly to Taako.]

Seriously though, Taako. Thanks for the food. And for being chill, in general.

I mean, hey, if you want me to be awkward about it I'm sure I could come up with something.

[He says it with a grin, clearly joking, but also he's bad at like, saying you're welcome.]

Naw, I mean— [He laughs.] I mean in general. It was kind of weird turning up here and not knowing anyone, so having someone to hang with has been fun.

[Even though it's only been a few weeks, he has picked up that this can be a difficult thing for Taako to respond to, so he shifts the mood back to humor for Taako's sake.]

But also the food. If you stop cooking for me I'll have to stop coming around.

I think we're pretty safe then, knowing like, myself, I'll even cater my own funeral.

[That's a little bit morbid, but well... there's Kravitz, after all.]

And I, you know, I get it. I didn't know anyone when I rocked up here, it was shitty until I made friends.

[Clark, and Bryn, and Ellie. They made it a lot easier.]
