a stranger's bed

As a lead in to September, Riverview's ♥ Month of Romance, this is a completely optional mingle that will cause affected characters to end up in each other's beds. There are various options for both established and new CR. While it's easiest for characters still living in Communal Housing, anyone who has moved to their own homes can be affected and end up finding their way to Communal Housing, or within their own housing.

Residents of the Quarantine may notice that various businesses selling food and drink - cafés, diners, bakeries, restaurants, and other such establishments - are heavily advertising a new flavor that's supposed to be the biggest thing since pumpkin spice. A flavor additive that's said to subtly change the flavor of whatever the diner is eating or drinking to optimize the dish, drink, dessert, or any other food item it is added to for each person's individual taste, it's been selling like wildfire and is the latest trend.

After the cause of the rash of amnesia was revealed to be plant-related, sellers are keeping the origin of the secret ingredient very close to their chests, since it is a derivative of a recently-discovered plant dubbed chameleonis. Depending on the method of ingestion, this additive can have a variety of unexpected side effects, but only once the person who has ingested it becomes sleepy. Methods of ingestion include:

● Ingestion: Beverage: When ingested as a flavor shot to drinks ranging from sodas to coffee to alcoholic beverages, it can cause a desire for closeness to a particular other person. Affected characters end up crawling into bed with that specific other character when they become sleepy.

● Ingestion: Food: When ingested as a flavoring added to a baked good or other meal, it can cause an intense desire for body heat when the character becomes drowsy. It won't matter to an affected character who is providing the body heat, so long as it's someone, and they will end up sleepily crawling into someone else's bed for warmth.

● Inhalation: When inhaled ether from a steaming hot beverage or soup, or as an essential oil or aroma from a bakery, it can cause disorientation when a character becomes sleepy. Affected characters either aren't sure which bed is theirs and simply crawl into the closest one, occupied or not, or become convinced that another character's bed is their own.

Feel free to post up a top-level for your own character either affected and invading a random bed or unaffected but open to having their bed invaded by affected characters, or tag around to other people's top-levels.

Tony was warm. It was really the only thought that registered as he woke slowly, brain still too fogged over to parse much else. Not uncomfortable, just warm. It was easy enough to just continue lying there, drifting somewhere between asleep and fully awake and not really thinking about much of anything.

At least until he tried to move. And realized that those were actual arms wrapped around him, presumably attached to the body tucked right up against his. Okay, that was a thing. It did at least do a good job of convincing him to wake up a bit more.

It took a little bit of shifting to get to a place where he could peer over, though it did then raise the question of if finding a familiar face was better or worse than the alternative. "Uhm," he said intelligently, blinking slowly. He had not had enough caffeine yet fort his.

"Mm," came the sleepy reply as Sam nuzzled his shoulder, lazily hitching a leg over Tony. He was vaguely aware he wasn't in his own bed, but didn't much care. There was a warm body next to him, and it felt nice. It would, he thought vaguely, be nicer if the other person would stop moving around so damn much, and so he reached up to his shoulders, trying to tug him back down.

"'s too early," Sam added by way of explanation. And never mind that he kept a regular schedule of running with Steve - Sam wasn't a morning person by nature, and neither the military nor Steve Rogers could force that out of him. Right now, all he wanted to do was sleep.

And Tony did go still as Sam wrapped further around him, let himself be pulled back down against the pillows, but he wasn't exactly as relaxed as he had been. Mostly he was still half asleep and very confused. And not really objecting to the full-body contact so much as not sure what to do about it. Did Sam think he was someone else?

"Sam," he said a little insistently, "what?" And then trailed off from there. For once, just a complete lack of words or any idea of how to put them together.

"You're warm," came a mumbled explanation. Which, unfortunately, was all the explanation that happened to be forthcoming as Sam dozed off on his shoulder, maybe snoring a little.

This lasted all of five minutes before Sam woke again, this time blinking at Tony, then darting a quick glance down under the covers to make sure they were both fully dressed. Not that he cared if Tony saw him naked - it wasn't exactly the first time, and Sam was pretty casual about nudity anyway - but he wanted to know just how he'd ended up here.

...apparently it hadn't involved sex.

"Well, that's weird."

Tony stared over at him a moment longer, but when Sam appeared to be quite happily drifting back off, Tony just sighed and settled down himself. At least it was comfortable.

At least until Sam woke up again. This time there was a minute or two of nothing before Tony's eyes cracked open just enough to give Sam an incredibly dry look. "You think?" He grumbled. Though he still wasn't really moving. If Sam had decided to help himself to Tony's bed, Tony was at least going to make the most of it.

"Mm." Although Sam didn't seem much inclined to move, either. "Don't remember how I got here. Or why." But whatever the reason, he didn't seem too terribly bothered. It wasn't anything like the amnesia pollen or the chalice getting stuck in the portal; this seemed to be reasonably benign. If the worst thing that came of it was crawling into Tony's bed, then it was probably the most harmless weird thing that had happened in Riverview thus far.

While there were options he might have taken in more private housing, Sam wasn't likely to go past cuddling in the communal areas. "-why the hell are you still living here, anyway?" he grumbled. "You're a goddamn adult, get an apartment, Stark."

"Excuse you. If you don't like it, find someone else's bed to invade." Which was an easy way of avoiding the part where Sam was probably right, but Tony wasn't about to admit it. He'd had a lot of other things on his mind lately, sue him. And getting the workshop finished was always going to be the first priority anyway.

Still, he shifted over until he was mostly facing Sam, not particularly bothered by the fact that they were still tangled together. "Should we be worried about the fact that you don't remember turning up here?" It's more vaguely curious than actually concerned. As weird things have gone, this is probably one of the most innocuous.

"But I'm already comfortable here," Sam pointed out reasonably. And if he pressed closer to Tony when he turned to face him, well, that was a complete coincidence and had nothing to do with anything.

"Mm." Now that his brain was fractionally more awake, he mulled the situation over. "I had a latte, and I got drowsy, and...I wanted-" He broke off there, looking a little embarrassed. "Yeah, it's nothing to worry about. Everything's fine."

Except for the part where he'd wanted to cuddle up to Tony. That might have been somewhat less fine.

Like Tony was going to let him get away with that. "Wanted...what?" he prompted, though from the tone of his voice, it was mostly just nosiness asking. It wasn't as if he really minded, as unexpected as the whole thing was.

Well and if something weird was happening that made people do strange things, Tony kind of wanted to be prepared for it. As prepared as anyone could be with some new insane thing cropping up every other week.

He nudged Sam lightly with one shoulder just to really try to prompt an actual response. "C'mon, Wilson. Don't tell me you were just missing my glorious presence."

Sam had the decency to look embarrassed. "I, uh, did. Maybe not your glorious presence, but I kinda wanted to just...curl up with you." Which was ridiculous; they hadn't exactly had the opportunity to snuggle before, so it wasn't like he'd been missing it. It had just been an impulse, and one, in retrospect, he should have tried harder to ignore.

But it was really nice, he had to admit that. Reluctantly.

And...Tony had not actually been expecting that. He blinks once, almost visibly trying to process the information.

"Okay," he says slowly. "And are you still feeling, uh. Urges?"

"Not more than usual." And since he's still pretty damn curled up with Tony, it's probably safe to say that he's a tactile person anyway.

"None for you specifically," he clarifies. "Not like it was before. Think it wore off overnight." Which is good for a lot of reasons. And he's pretty glad it just gave cuddling urges, and not anything else.

"Well. Good."

The moment hangs there a moment longer before Tony makes a concerted effort to relax again. They're here, the situation is (apparently) dealt with. Might as well enjoy the warmth while he's got it.

"I'm going back to sleep," he says, already yawning his way around the words. "Feel free to do the same."

"'kay." Sam nestles his head against Tony's chest. "I'll make pancakes for breakfast, if you want."

Might as well offer something in exchange for invading his bed, right?
