who: Cain (Jacob Kane) [
aeturnus] / You!
what: Catch-all for the rest of the month
where: Floor Six, out in the city, Gramarye
when: July 15th-31st
warnings: n/a, will edit as necessary. pls tell me what he'd see on your character, though!
Floor Six.
[ Cain's not one much to outright bug people in their home turf. Unfortunately for the people that live on the sixth floor of communal housing, it's also his home turf and so he's definitely made himself comfortable in the meanwhile. For quite some time now, he's had a table set up in the corner of the central room with various bits and bobs and inventions — more recently, they've begun to take more concentrated shapes such as a briefcase or something circular of the same size. There's a notebook laying on the disc and, for those who know technical jargon, it appears to be working out methodology for allowing the objects to go down and up in size without harming the structural integrity. It notes his own laptop as the first example which is probably why this isn't all typed down in the first place.
There's a small bear that accompanies Cain around the floor half the time, has been around since mid-June when he recovered from the Chalice's power, strange but perhaps not too strange for where they all are right now. It speaks in simple utterances but appears to enjoy all the floormates, especially if they feel like giving it food. Where is it the other half of the time??? Good question.
Aside from that, most days he cooks for himself and others if asked. His cooking skills are fantastic, definitely above bar even when he's just making something quick, and he never really minds sharing. Once a week, however, he seems to plan something more specific and even starts setting up the making of a cheesecake; when he puts that one in the freezer to set, he puts a note on saying it's off-limits. Weird!
Other than that he's probably got a lot of books around his bed and always seems to be doing... something even if it's quiet. Finding him truly at rest and unbusy is near to impossible. At least he still sleeps sometime, at the very reasonable hours of 4-9AM. ]
Out & About.
[ There's a lot of time spent out in the city. When he isn't working on his job, projects, magic lessons, physical training, or language lessons for friends, he's wandering. It's about 40/60 since not everything is done all at once or on the same days and he knows how to structure himself. There's still too much to see in the city and more often than not he wanders just to cement the buildings and businesses in his mind, keeping an eye out for anything new or places that may have shut down or changed due to people being relocated or going home.
There's some of that, but not as much as he'd hope or expect.
Still, he forges on and keeps an eye out. Things happen all the time and he'd rather not miss it. Or at least he'd rather be there in person because inevitably everything ends up on the internet. Sometimes he'll even have purpose, such as shopping for groceries or checking out various tech shops as if he can discern their secrets just from window-shopping. ]
Gramarye.
[ Cain's here once or twice a week for multiple reasons. Much as his world is about as magical as a brick (ghosts and Reapers aside), he's found an aptitude for it within himself and takes lessons from Victor von Doom and Lucretia. So, of course, he stops by and peruses their books where he can.
Most notably he's been helping Lucretia with her project to collate information on various worlds' magical influences and how casting works there, so sorry not sorry if you get stopped to answer a few questions or maybe they just need some clarification on a statement you already made? Or maybe he's just hogging the copier because Lucretia takes Many, Many Notes and he needs versions of them for himself too.
He's probably hogging the copier the most, tbh. ]
For Loki (616).
[ Although Cain's notably been avoiding showing up to Tony's lab directly, after sending that game-like testing application to Tony (okay, maybe it really is just a game pretending to be something useful), he stops by to see if it's helped on the progress of the actual things. Unannounced because it's more of a work location than a home location and he figures if Tony's general attitude and work ethic are to base anything off of, he's probably there, right? Right.
So he shows up, laptop-phone-ridiculous-thing in his pocket and a few things he's been working on in his bag. That it doesn't seem occupied at first glance is surprising, but he'll go ahead and enter anyway. Not like a security system is really going to do much more than alert people he's here. That's the whole point. ]
Hey... Tony?
Wildcard!

Maybe it was where they guy kinda reminded him of Dick in looks, or maybe it was the tinkering but today he couldn't ignore it and his eyes moved over the pieces thinking there is no way they could fit... but Roy made arrows radioactive so, anything was possible. The numbers floating near him gave him about fifteen more years.
He shifted into the nearest chair and slipped the towel off his head and around his neck as he sat back.]
Just watching, curious what your making. [ He spoke like it was perfectly reasonable, which he felt it was sharing a living space and all.]
no subject
Nothing specific, I'm more trying to test a theory here. Some of the tech floating around is way beyond what I'm used to so here I am, trying to backwards engineer with a laptop and a Home Depot toolbox to my name.
The surprising thing is how it's not a total failure so far.
no subject
I have been curious about the tech floating around, myself. So, how much luck are you having so far?
no subject
[ That said, he's still trying to carefully place the two pieces together. After some fiddling, it slides in and he sits back in surprise, then grins. ]
Whaddya know?
no subject
[ He grinned a bit watching it slide in place.]
Well, hot damn. So, what's it going to do?
[ For the first time in months he was feeling like things felt normal. It was nice.]
no subject
[ That said, he picks something else up and flips the combined piece over to start poking into the seams to gauge it for himself. ]
no subject
I'll be right back.
[ He moved waking towards his bed, lifting the towel to finish drying his hair before he tossed it on the bed and knelled to unlock the trunk and yank the bag he was always carrying out and walked back to the table sitting it down, then to the fridge, getting two of the beers he had carried in the night before sitting one down near the other he opened the other for himself but didn't open the bag yet. ]
You do a lot of tinkering like this?
no subject
[ Way beyond what his world is capable of, and Cain's curiosity and intellectualism just can't leave him alone. He has to figure this out, stay on top of it, learn it all. Thankfully he knows better than to get frantic about it because he's got as much time as he wants, really.
At the beer, he grins and nods in thanks while his hands are still busy. ]
You got something?
no subject
[ He asked as he took a drink. ]
I do, but I need a promise of secrecy before I even think of showing it to you and seeing if you can fix it.
no subject
[ He's looking at you, Tony Stark. All of them, probably, but he's only got it confirmed for one of the three. ]
Ooh. Telling me you have a secret to keep that's in a mysterious bag is already a pretty good secret, but I'll go with yes, I promise.
no subject
[ Jason narrowed his eyes a moment before shrugging a bit.]
Just know I will shot your foot off if you breath a word.
[ He opened his bag, the guns and holsters on one side and the red shiny helmet pulled out and tossed it towards the other. ]
The displays are off sync. I had it all programmed for Gotham and eastern time but none of that is right here.
no subject
[ Seriously. Three of them? Yikes. He doesn't feel bad for outing him, either, since he made that public post on the Fourth of July anyway. It was easy to see for those who know the type.
Catching the helmet, Cain turns it over in his hand and starts to examine it. For now, just purely how it's formed and functions from the outside before he plans to hook it up to anything. He'll need to partition off the laptop first and make sure this tech won't corrupt anything but from a technology standpoint it definitely has him very, very interested. He's also completely unphased by the threat. His foot? Please. ]
Right, there's probably other GPS and location systems to hook up to here. Shouldn't be hard at all once I figure out how the base program works. That could take me a couple of days, I'm not going to be able to just look at another world's code and know it, but what you want is really simple. I could duct tape it in if worse come to worst.
no subject
[ Opps. He'd do that eventually, more so now that he sees it could be very useful.
Jay sat back taking a drink from his own bottle watching Cain with the helmet. He understood a good chunk of it from having to repair it himself when bits got blown off or parts burned out. Usually he would toss it to Roy or use one of his spares. But, Roy was not an option and had not been for months now, and he had none of his spares here.
He was amused at the lack of reaction to the threat and nodded as Cain spoke.]
I know a little on how it works, my old partner tinkered with it before work split us apart. [ WHich wasn't true, but it was a good enough lie. ] There is no rush, just keep it out of sight, I'd rather not have everyone knowing if that makes sense. And no duct tape, jeeze I could use my phone before I'd use that. At least on the helmet.
no subject
[ He scoffs lightly in amusement, still looking at the helmet before setting it down to gently feel around for seams or other means of getting into it. At Jason's continued response, he looks up with a look that he's obviously tempering for him. ]
Metaphorical duct tape. Let's not even get into the logistics of how bad real duct tape would be for something streamlined like this.
no subject
[ Doing a whole lot of nothing. He was trying to learn the city, find out how the crime in the city worked if there were drug lords he could shake for cash. Daddy needed some expensive things, and he didn't have the deep pockets he used to have.]
On the side near the ear.
[ He spoke as if he could tell what he was looking for, a simple latch that would make the top of the mask lift. It was basically two pieces, one for the bottom half his face, the other for the top, the latches just under where his ears would be. ]
See, now you sound like Roy. [ Jason didn't even realize he was smiling.]
no subject
[ Whether he actually gets in contact with Tony or not isn't Cain's business, but he'll certainly take credit for reminding him. At the instruction, he finds the latch and pops it open, starting to really feel around for the mechanics and hold the front piece up near his face to peer through the visor. Intriguing!!
He glances over, briefly with the mask still there, before lowering it to continue his inspection. ]
I'll take that as a compliment. Think I could keep this with me for a few?
no subject
Opened it was easier to see how it fit and what it was made of. When Cain asked his question Jason nodded.]
Yeah, sure, just be careful with it. And if anyone asks, it's not mine.
no subject
[ Cain says it as a joke, but he's well-aware that it could just be what that's about. Hard to say around here. If nothing else, he doesn't sound very judgmental with his comment, just entertained. ]
no subject
Nah man, nothing like that. [ There's a glimmer of mischief in his eyes.]
Take as long as you need, and just let me know how you want to be paid.
