Get In Losers, We're Doing Research
who: Openish - Floor Six Mingle Post
what: Ed and Chloe Initiate Phase II: Research and Explore
when: Sometime After New Arrivals Show Up (July 10th?)
where: Floor Six
warnings: Please hit up Ed's Permissions Post, as he's a CRAU and may recognize your character or talk about being in various other worlds.
The kitchen is laid out with whatever (reasonable) refreshments one can imagine available within the quarantine, snacks and beverages to accommodate varying tastes spread across the kitchen island and counter tops. Enough seating for 20 (10 from the kitchen, 10 from the entertainment area) had been arranged around Chloe's display, however she chose to set it up - since it had been put on her as the tech savvy one between them to do the presentation.
New arrivals, whether they cared for the research and exploration party or not would easily find themselves surrounded by books, notebooks and other papers with various notations - all regarding Riverview, the history of the quarantine, rumors surrounding it and comparisons to other worlds that similarly pull people through portals. These are out in the open and free to browse, should one be so inclined.
[Anyone with relation to floor six is welcome to attend - resident, friend of resident, etc. If you're unsure whether or not your character would get an invitation please contact the player you have CR with. Should your character be the type to show up uninvited, feel free to crash. Pretty much anyone Ed has CR with would be notified, and he'll be making a public post on the network before this event actually takes place IC. However if you have any questions don't hesitate to hit me up:

In Quarantine, however, he'd actually managed to make a few friends. Reaper, Loki, maybe even Ed... just to name a few. And Nico didn't much like the idea of losing them. Still, he knew he had duties at home, like to his father and to the dead demigods who needed proper death rites.
For all his searching of ways to get home, to fix the portal, he'd been unsuccessful. Thus his seeking out the dead for answers.
"I don't," he said, frowning down at his hands. "To be honest, there's also the chance the dead could lie. It's happened to me before. I don't think they were lying about whatever's on the planet, though. Something must be there and we might find a way to use it."
no subject
His expression shifts at that response, more thoughtful than anything. It was also a gamble, like everything else in this place - but he certainly wasn't surprised by that news. He had been doing this for too long to be surprised by much at all, anymore. "They are just people, right?" People lie all the time, so why wouldn't the dead? It still felt weird to talk about so casually but he's trying not to think about it.
Ed nods at the last thing Nico says, determination set on his features. If that's going to help he's going to look into it, even if Nico's not offering anymore information due to his loyalty to whatever Loki's needs are. "First, we'll need to figure out how to get to it."
no subject
Unfortunately, he hadn't had much luck in finding information. What he did have, he didn't mind sharing with people in the event the info could be deciphered by someone smarter than him.
"Yeah, just people," he continued, nodding in response to Ed's question. That's what the dead were, especially the spirits he raised. Few were more than that and Nico was always careful about not raising anything dangerous. The moment he sensed danger, he would usually stop his summoning in exchange for fighting the source of danger.
"I know there's some people hoping to build a space ship, but how well that will work is yet to be seen. I've considered shadow traveling there, but it's a big jump and might wear me out. Plus, I've never shadow traveled to other worlds before. I was brought here much like everyone else."
no subject
"Yeah, my job involves bringing in scraps - I think spaceship building is part of what those go to." He hadn't really gotten too involved in that, it was way over his head. "Maybe they're hoping to accomplish something with it, but so far I haven't seen anything useful mentioned."
He gives a confused look at that last part. "You can do that?" Whether he means shadow traveling in general or to other worlds specifically remains up in the air.
no subject
But he doesn't have much time to think on it. Instead, he refocused on the question being asked, taking it to be about shadow travel in general since it was a rare skill. "Yeah, I just kinda step into one shadow and emerge out of another. I can bring people with me if I want and even travel long distances," he explained, hoping that would also satisfy any other question Ed had about his power.
no subject
No idea this is how Nico arrived here, nope. None at all.
no subject
Because that's the problem with shadow travel: the farther he goes, the more he takes with him, the more fatigued he gets. Of course, Nico sees no reason to go in depth about his weaknesses. At least not with Ed and not at the moment.
no subject
As in, he definitely wouldn't be asking Nico about shadow traveling there, and he's hoping the kid has enough sense not to actually try it, despite his earlier words.
no subject
Because when he first tried it, it left him exhausted and drained. Nowadays, he can make jumps at a faster rate and with less fatigue. It was handy, though often times Nico sill preferred walking. Which meant for the time being, shadow traveling to the planet was out of question.
no subject
"Sounds useful for short distances, though." Or getting out of trouble. It could be fairly easy to get himself out of danger, if he thought to use it for that.
"Don't suppose you have any other handy skills?" It's mostly a joke, he doesn't expect Nico to share every detail about himself with Ed, having a few secrets certainly wouldn't surprise him - but everything else about Nico seemed to.
no subject
And just as soon as it began, it stopped. The room regained its light and warmth and Nico shoved his hands in his pockets. "That's just a little taste. It's my aura and I can expand it when I want. Plus, this sword isn't just for looks."
The sword he was referring to hung in a scabbard dangling from a silver chain Nico wore as a belt. He drew it and even the sword, which was pitch-black and lethal looking, gave off the same aura.
"Stygian Iron, forged in the River Styx. Let's just say I'm pretty good with it when I need to be."
no subject
Ed remains still for a moment, as if not registering the rest of what Nico is saying. Throwing his worst memories at him is not something he's going to recover from easily, even without the time in Purg, but when you add those... Nina, and Al-
When he does recompose himself though, he looks as if nothing happened. Shaking the dread away as if it was never there. His only response to the last part was to pointedly look at the sword as Nico explained.
"Well, I didn't think you wore it just for looks." He might sound a little annoyed, but that's because he's trying to mask the discomfort from moments ago.
no subject
"Right," he said, a mildly apologetic look in his eyes. "Demigods often need to fight to stay alive, or protect people. My sword is a bit special, but it also does the job."
no subject
Ed nodded at the explanation, not really looking at him as he spoke. He didn't really understand the whole thing but it seemed like a lot to ask about all at once. Nico was still mostly a stranger, he didn't want him to feel like he was prying. "That makes sense..."
no subject
"I can also manipulate earth, form large blocks of stone, burrow through walls... Things like that. My half-sister is better at it than I am, but I can do a decent job when it's called for."
no subject
"You seem to have a lot going for you." The temptation to ask if there was anything else was subdued by the memory of the first time, so he's just going to let that go and if Nico offered more information that was fine.
He didn't seem remotely freaked out by Nico specifically, but it was probably pretty clear that he still hadn't completely shaken his discomfort.
no subject
In essence, Nico was beginning to realize he was a bit of a powerhouse compared to the other people with powers in Quarantine. It made him feel a bit responsible for protecting people; an urge that was not common for him. He figured Ed, at least, was capable of taking care of himself.
"I'm a child of the Big Three. The Eldest Gods," he said, like he was explaining the weather. "Children of the Big Three tend to be more powerful than most demigods."
no subject
"So, this isn't normal where you're from, even for others like you." It was put out as a statement, but Nico was welcome to confirm it. "Sorry, I'm not .... really familiar with your religion, I'm guessing those are three different gods, then."
no subject
"It's not really a religion. The gods are real, like you or me. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here. It's rare for the Eldest gods like my dad, Hades, or Poseidon, or even Zeus to have children, but demigods are around. The lesser gods have quite a few kids every century. And yes, they're different gods. Poseidon is god of the Sea, Zeus is god of the Air and Heaven, and my father, Hades, is god of the underworld.
Of course, there's other gods. Like Athena, goddess of wisdom. I know a daughter of hers and you could even be a child of Athena. You seem smart enough. There's also Apollo, god of the Sun, music, medicine, and poetry. He's... kinda weird, though. And then there's the evil gods, like the Titans or the Giants. They're all children of Gaea. She was, well, a right bitch."
no subject
Or, trying to anyway. He's mostly absorbing what Nico's saying, and in an abstract way it makes sense - if he didn't try too hard to think of it as a reality, and mostly just took in the details like a story. He could wrap his mind around the rest of it later.
The last part though he misses completely, because he gets to about you could even be a child of Athena and his brain short circuits. Only to be snapped back to reality by the assertion that Gaea was a right bitch - because that last part was the only part he heard.
Ed just blinks for a moment, trying to register all of that. When he does speak, all that comes out is "I'm no child of a god...." Nevermind a god of wisdom of all things, he might come off as smart but Edward spent too much time beating himself up for past mistakes to really believe it too much, himself.
no subject
"You could be a legacy and not know it. Like, Daedalus was the child of Athena—stop me if you've heard this story—and his son Icarus was a legacy. Of course, Icarus died early, flying to close to the sun with the wings his father made, but we can save that for another time. What I'm saying is Godly blood runs in families."
no subject
The shock is evident on his features at Nico's words, and for a moment he just stares before clearing his throat. "Yeah, we ... have a story like that too." He might look a little defensive right now, glancing away as he adds quietly, "There's a saying... get too close to the sun, you get burned."
no subject
"I met Daedalus. Even put his soul to rest. He lived a long time in a false body that he sustained through magic. My point is, this stuff is not just stories. I mean, where do you think that saying came from?" he asked, gesturing again.
no subject
At the question, his response is curt. "I have no idea." Really, he didn't think it was because a bunch of gods existed in some other world and were sleeping with mortals. Not that he's going to dwell on that idea, a little too focused on the heat spreading across his features.
no subject
Instead, he gives another wave of his hand and figures he'll continue on the track he's on.
"The stories all have some bit of truth in them. They vary, of course, as all retellings do, but when you get down to it, one thing usually remains and that's the backbone of the tale. The truth of it. Icarus was foolish, disobeying his father's pleas to not fly so far or so high. He paid the price for that."
