community housing

[ Anyone who knows Ronan Lynch or has seen him around will recognize his raven Chainsaw swooping around menacingly in front of the community housing. Is she hunting something? Trying to gouge your eyes out?

Another look will reveal Adam standing below her trajectory. Every so often, he tosses up some food that gets her to swoop and calls out something in Latin. Whatever he's saying, she responds by doing aerobatic tricks.

Stand there long enough and she might come barreling worryingly close to you. ]

breaking and centering

[ Have some sort of vehicle that needs a tune-up? Or just want to find someone with a wrench? Breaking and Centering is your place! Adam is working, but it's a slow day. If you're just passing by, he's balancing on a workbench with a textbook in his lap and a wrench in the other.

If you're bringing him something to look at, you might be treated to a mildly judgmental: ] What did you do to it?

perimeter

[ Adam has been taking classes at the university, but he's not getting all of the information he wants. Therefore, he has to find it for himself. He takes some light provisions, long-sleeved shirt and pants to protect from strange plants, a knife, cheap binoculars, and a notebook.

The plan is to find a creature he's never seen before and study it from afar. Find him kneeling between overgrown plants and taking notes, or maybe save him from a creature that will probably eat him. ]

Maybe you were on a leyline. We seem to be from similar places. [ He pauses. ]

Sorry, I guess you don't want random people trying to throw out guesses about your whole life. Do you like it, living for this long?

Like it? Overall it's been pretty good. It can't all be, though.

[ He shrugs. ] It's... not a choice I made, so I just deal with it best I can. So yeah, guess I do.

[ He's always heard stories about how awful it is to be immortal, but he supposes they were never written by immortals. He seems pleased by the answer, at least. ]

It must be cool to get to see so much of history exactly the way it was. And you've had so much time to learn, like, every skill. I believe the supergenius thing now.

[ Oh, he doesn't doubt some people would be miserable with it. It takes all types. Maybe they were lucky that it was him of the twins that was stuck with this, in a way, that he could deal with it. Abel's price, however... well, it doesn't make anything worth it. ]

Gee, thanks. Yeah, I've learned a lot and I'm lucky I have an aptitude for learning. Can't imagine what someone with less interest would do with all this time.

[ Not exactly true. Conquering the world, sparking conflicts, whatever keeps someone distracted from the infinite maw of eternity. ]

[ Adam, of course, begins to think of what he would do with all that time. He could get so much done, completely recreate himself if he pleased.

But then he would have to see Ronan and his friends die... ]

I think I'd learn biology and study myself. Maybe discover the secret to immortality, sell it... That'd make for a good sci-fi novel.

[ His expression hardens a little. ]

And I'd wager to say that's why it's better to just go to ground in reality.

Guess you're right. [ He probably shouldn't have said that. He'll keep it in mind. ]

Do you like it better here?

[ It's less that he shouldn't have and more than it's just bad timing. Cain's in a bit of a sucky period of his life right now. ]

Not necessarily? It's a place... a really confusing place. I'll know better once I really carve a spot out for myself here.

What kind of spot are you hoping to carve out? [ He doesn't mean to sound like he's interrogating. He just needs to understand a person before relaxing around them. ]

I mean, there are gods here and all, so I can't imagine you're the only immortal.

[ His smile is somewhat unsure, although no less genuine for it. ]

Apparently I'm not, no. That's... different. I guess I'm just waiting to see what happens, what kind of people really find their way here? I don't really have any plans to make a big deal of myself.

[ Adam nods. That's basically what he's been trying to do too. ]

It's weird, right? A lot of the people here seem so nice... but if they decided to, they could probably destroy the whole city.

Which is abjectly terrifying. [ His brows go up to emphasize. Even if he doesn't look scared and isn't constantly frightened, knowing that there are such superpowers just strolling the streets is... humbling. ] Laying low and blending in may just be the best choice.

That, or making lots of friends really quickly.

[ Finally, someone who gets it. ]

You're probably a master at the former, right? People would notice if you never aged, so... how do you usually avoid getting involved in all the battles that happen throughout history?

Just in case.

Makeup helps with that. As does changing your habits. [ A lot of it is the acting, knowing how people move when they age and how interests mature. Cain's had to do a lot of that but really, his interests are just all over the place. ]

As for the battles? I'm immortal, but I'm not a fighter. You pack up and leave. In a case like this where we can't... you offer to do as much on the sidelines as you can.

[ Sounds like a coward's way. Cain likes it as a path of least resistance. ]

[ Adam's preferred method of existing is in the shadows, as unnoticeable as possible. So it's helpful advice and he seems genuinely interested. ]

Work on both sides, you think? I mean, I wouldn't be surprised to see some people get into a pissing contest. It's just a matter of deciding who's actually stronger.

[ Cain doesn't always go out of his way to be unnoticed, but he does work hard to make sure his presence doesn't spread outside his own influence. ]

Both sides, or something like handling supplies or keeping other people out of it. Whatever puts you in a good position without making yourself a prime target.

[ Adam smiles in a secretive sort of way, like he approves of this kind of thinking. ]

Are you a pacifist? I mean, you've had plenty of time to become a skilled fighter.

[ He laughs, a little unexpected for the question. ]

No, definitely not. I can fight. Just... I don't really get into fights for no reason. Why should I?

[ He spends most of his time around someone who loves fighting for no reason, so he shrugs. ]

You never felt some sort of alliance with a place you were in and wanted to fight for them?

Well... There's one place, but it's always been tricky. Most of the time I care more about the people than the places, and those people can't come back like I would.

[ So it's easier to just avoid the conflict anyway and put himself in the middle if unavoidable. ]

Sounds stressful. Like you wouldn't want to get close to anyone then. [ Well, that's just him. ]

What place?

What? No. That's not what I mean. Getting close to people is about... the only thing you've got going, really.

[ He smiles slightly, licks his lips and offers a shrug. Almost like he's about to tell a real secret. ]

Rome.

[ He looks confused, like he can't imagine why anyone would put themselves through that kind of pain. ]

Where you grew up. Why is it tricky?

[ It's okay, kid. You're young. ]

Well... for a long time, my image was pretty well-known there. It would be hard to fight for it without getting pulled into more.

[ That information distracts him enough. He looks amused. ]
