community housing

[ Anyone who knows Ronan Lynch or has seen him around will recognize his raven Chainsaw swooping around menacingly in front of the community housing. Is she hunting something? Trying to gouge your eyes out?

Another look will reveal Adam standing below her trajectory. Every so often, he tosses up some food that gets her to swoop and calls out something in Latin. Whatever he's saying, she responds by doing aerobatic tricks.

Stand there long enough and she might come barreling worryingly close to you. ]

breaking and centering

[ Have some sort of vehicle that needs a tune-up? Or just want to find someone with a wrench? Breaking and Centering is your place! Adam is working, but it's a slow day. If you're just passing by, he's balancing on a workbench with a textbook in his lap and a wrench in the other.

If you're bringing him something to look at, you might be treated to a mildly judgmental: ] What did you do to it?

perimeter

[ Adam has been taking classes at the university, but he's not getting all of the information he wants. Therefore, he has to find it for himself. He takes some light provisions, long-sleeved shirt and pants to protect from strange plants, a knife, cheap binoculars, and a notebook.

The plan is to find a creature he's never seen before and study it from afar. Find him kneeling between overgrown plants and taking notes, or maybe save him from a creature that will probably eat him. ]

Well... There's one place, but it's always been tricky. Most of the time I care more about the people than the places, and those people can't come back like I would.

[ So it's easier to just avoid the conflict anyway and put himself in the middle if unavoidable. ]

Sounds stressful. Like you wouldn't want to get close to anyone then. [ Well, that's just him. ]

What place?

What? No. That's not what I mean. Getting close to people is about... the only thing you've got going, really.

[ He smiles slightly, licks his lips and offers a shrug. Almost like he's about to tell a real secret. ]

Rome.

[ He looks confused, like he can't imagine why anyone would put themselves through that kind of pain. ]

Where you grew up. Why is it tricky?

[ It's okay, kid. You're young. ]

Well... for a long time, my image was pretty well-known there. It would be hard to fight for it without getting pulled into more.

[ That information distracts him enough. He looks amused. ]

What, like a bandit? Did they have wanted posters up?

[ He laughs, rocks on his heels. Shakes his head after a moment. ]

No... No, not quite. Other end of the spectrum there.

[ It takes him a moment, but then his eyes widen a bit. ]

Oh. Did they think you were a god?

[ His eyes light up for the realization and he nods. ]

After a while, that's one of the things they went with.

That's amazing. [ The beauty of ancient civilizations. ] What did they call you? Don't tell me you were like Bacchus or something.

Bacchus? No, no. Although that would have been cool. Quirinus.

[ aka the god that many people came to believe was originally Romulus. ]

[ It takes him a moment to bring up Plutarch in his head, but then he becomes confused again. ]

How did that happen? Plutarch said that Quirinus was associated with Romulus, that's a pretty big leap to come up with for someone who doesn't age.

Unless that someone who doesn't age was actually the inspiration in the first place.

[ He's watching Adam now, curious to see how those thoughts will coalesce. ]

[ The cogs are clearly turning in his head. ]

What, you went to a guy in his dream? Told him you were Romulus?

[ Okay, no cigar yet. ]

No, I can't do anything with dreams. You're getting close but a little mixed up.

You could just tell me. [ But he doesn't actually give him any time to answer, because Adam wants to figure it out on his own. ]

You can't be Romulus because― [ Wait. ] Your brother...?

[ He can't really muster up a smile for him jumping onto the right track because he jumps right onto the hard part about it, too. ]

Remus, yes. When he died... [ when Romulus supposedly killed him ] ... that's when this whole thing started.

But you― [ Maybe he shouldn't bring up the whole murder part. It's just a legend, anyway. ]

You founded Rome. You have to know about the legends. Are they accurate? Like, the wolf...?

[ Well, there's a reason he calls himself Cain now, kiddo. But it's a personal sort of pain and guilt. ]

I did. And no. No, the wolf just kind of... happened? I don't know where that even came from.

[ He has an idea, but he doesn't like that idea and it's not going to get more attention than it deserves. ]

We weren't raised by wolves.

[ He stares for a long moment before he laughs. Yeah, he sure did just ask the founder of Rome if he was raised by wolves. ]

Sorry, it's just―this is really cool. Why are you going by Jacob now? Aren't you proud?

[ His brows go up at that. ]

What would I call myself? You gotta mix it up sometimes. Besides, Jacob is the father of nations. I figured that still fits.

You don't feel any sort of connection to your name? You're a big deal. I'm sure plenty of people here would know you, probably gain some respect.

Here, you mean? I'm not so sure about that. How many places have a Rome, anyway?

[ It's a weird thought, and one he needs to look into more. How many universes have a version of Cain around? ]

Maybe it won't even mean anything.

I've met a few people who have similar worlds. And anything remotely similar has to have a Rome. I mean, without it―well, I guess I don't need to explain world history to you. [ He smiles and shrugs. ]

You shouldn't sell yourself short. I bet if you wanted to, you could make something nice out of this place.

[ He smiles for the world history comment, then gives a shrug. ]

Maybe. Probably. Fair enough. Then again, I did declare the next century my time off... [ That gets a more sardonic look. As if that's just something you do. ] Not that I sell myself short, but I haven't been a leader in a long time since it's become easier and easier for word to travel.
