what: the superfamily moves into a supermansion (okay, it's more of a cottage).
when: the move is early to mid-may, guests may come by for the latter half of the month.
where: the supercottage.
warnings: family shenanigans?

[ clark has found a house for his family. kara and jon have bedrooms upstairs, on the ground floor there's a kitchen, a living/dining room and lois' bedroom/study. there's a basement that will eventually feature a pool table or similar but for now is pretty empty.

supers, feel free to write your own starters for moving shenanigans, domestic things, getting used to living together, having guests over, etc. ]

i. kitchen.

[ Riverview is a temporary place for all of them, but Clark has put some work in around the house to make it more homey. The furniture and curtains he chose are all in warm tones, and there's a lot of light in every room. He's always been into DIY stuff, and it's important to him that they all feel safe and relaxed here.

Clark started with the kitchen. He has wasted no time putting up a shelf on the kitchen wall and filling it with recipe books. He's also been writing down the ones he found on the local internet, as well as some approximations of Kryptonian food from ingredients Kara chooses.

He was serious about a herb garden. The moment he's read a book on how to care for the herbs properly, Clark starts on his own in the kitchen window. Experience will teach him the rest of what he needs to know.

The only thing he might not like about living with family is that he can't surprise them. Even Lois, because the aroma drifts through the house.

It won't stop him from trying. ]

Five more minutes! It's almost ready.

ii. front garden.

[ They have a small garden in front of the house. Clark's expertise is crops, not flowers. He chose a good beginner's plant for their garden: a cheerful yellow and pink bloom for the fence nearest the neighbour. ]

Should we put something over the awning on the back door? It might look nice with a creeper plant.

iii. visitors/wildcard.

[ He'd wanted to see the place as soon as possible of course, but he'd given it a few days before reaching out, figuring that all of them would probably need some time to settle in before dealing with an impromptu guest. He'd called ahead today just be safe, ensuring he wouldn't be catching Clark at an inconvenient moment.

The place is lovely in that charmingly Smallville way, though probably he should have expected that. He eying the exteriors admiringly as he knocks on the door, balancing a small basket a little awkwardly on one arm as he does it. It wouldn't do to arrive at a friend's new home without a gift in hand. ]

[ Kara and Lois are both at work, with Jon at school. Clark has taken a few days off to spend time with the house. He finds he likes being a homebody.

Dick calling ahead just means Clark can definitely surprise at least him with a warm meal. It's already done when Dick knocks.

Clark beams at Dick as he opens the door. ]

Hey. Come on in.

[ Clark looks happy. Not that he’d really expected anything else, but it warms his heart to see it anyway. ]

Good to see you again. [ In the basket is some fruit, some bakery treats (which he definitely bought instead of attempting to make himself), and a small packet of recipes printed on nice paper and tied with pretty string. He can’t remember many of Alfred’s, but it seems only right to share the few that he does. Alfred would want that.

Also tucked in the back are some thoughtfully chosen takeout menus. ]

I wasn’t sure if you were more of a takeout guy or a family dinners every night guy, so I went for both options.

[ He's always happy to see a friend. Dick is solidly in the inner circle and not just because he knew the other Clark. ]

I'm more of the latter, but thanks, I'll make good use of the menu. Do you want to put the basket here?

Sure. Thanks. [ And he sets it down in the indicated spot. ]

So, how's life on the home front been treating you?

[ Very well, he suspects. Still, he wants to hear it from his friend. ]

i. just like a painted sky
( Typically, she isn't one to like being cooped up inside, even when it's raining or snowing. When it's sunny like it is today, there's no excuse whatsoever to stay in. She takes some art supplies she's bought outside, an easel, canvas, some paints and a jar of clean water. Setting herself up in the grass, she glances from the quaint, comfortable image the house makes all on its own, to her canvas and back again.

A few strokes of her brush, and a rough outline begins to take shape. It doesn't take long for the canvas to reflect the house itself, though getting the right shade for the building is a bit of a challenge.

Kara cleans her brush by stirring it in the now dark, dirty water in the jar, and tilts her head, stepping back. )

A little more white, maybe? Or blue? ( She'd heard whoever had come up behind her a while back, and had been too focused to acknowledge them until now. ) I can't decide.

ii. blanket forts r us
( Staying in isn't nearly so bad when you have company, though! Kara grins over at her companion now, as she huddles beneath an afghan not all that unlike one she'd had at home, and holds up the remote. )

Ready? Oh, wait! I forgot snacks.

( The horror! ) What do you feel like having? This is The Princess Bride. I'm personally going to want popcorn.

( Surprising this one is a hopelessly lost cause by now. Kara is down the stairs and peering around the corner the second she smells something cooking.

She'd just been about to peek inside the oven with her x-ray vision when he catches her, and she grins excitedly. )

What is it? It smells great!

( Also kind of familiar, if not exactly the same as she remembers. Kara's eyes open wide, and she meets his gaze in astonishment. )

Like something from home.

[She invited him to visit and view the new home, but it had felt like an intrusion for Jon. For several days he had put off paying his respects, distracted by his work around the perimeter and also trying to get acclimated to this entirely different world.

After awhile, his hesitation seemed ridiculous and his excuse became small. Kara had been kind to him and he wouldn't mind seeing her again or the place that she had moved to. Without Ghost, there was no one to make the walk with, so he set off alone.

When he approached her home, he spied her outside painting. He waited a moment, watching her image bloom to life, colorful and bright as she was. He hated to disturb her, but a part of him wanted a better look.]

That's very good.

[He doesn't usually call on the houses of other people, but after speaking to Clark the other day, he has decided that he owes Kara an apology. He looks incredibly wary as he pads silently up to the front door and knocks, all his instincts telling him that this is a terrible idea and he should run away.

The moment she opens the door, he blurts his intentions out bluntly.]

Turns out you don't want to hurt him. Sorry.

[And then he turns as if to leave, like that could be the end of it.]

( Her cheeks flush a little as soon as her sensitive hearing picks up the sound of his heartbeat. It's silly, but she can't help it much. At least she has some time to regain her composure before she turns around to smile at him, a warm, sunny expression on her face. )

Hey! I wasn't sure if you'd come. It's good to see you. How are you doing?

( Any composure she'd had almost flees from her when he compliments her work. Kara takes in a deep breath, and glances back at the painting, brows furrowing again. )

Thank you. Though the colour of the house still isn't a match.

( First of all, he's the last person she'd expected to show up looking for her of all people. There's no mistake, though, he's definitely not here for Kal or Jon or Lois. What he says to her is also not at all what she might have thought he would, and so she's left frozen there for a long moment, blinking owlishly.

But then it processes rapidly in her mind as he moves to turn away, and she steps forward out into the sunlight to follow. )

Hey! You don't have to go. ( If he turns to look at her, he'll find her expression sheepish. She adjusts her glasses, and shakes her head. ) I was a bit of a jerk, too. Sorry about that.

( For Rao's sake, is it possible that she's just found someone more socially awkward than she is? She smiles a little, and gestures toward the house. )

Did you want to come in? I don't know if my cousin's given you the tour or not. He's pretty proud of the garden.

[He wants to go.

He should go.

But he doesn't. He stops and turns to look at her again, discomfort fairly easily read in the way he hunkers down into his hoodie despite the warmth of the day. Not that he can go in short sleeves, not if he wants to keep his arm hidden.]

Yeah, he said.

[Well, this is already awkward.]

He wanted me to come and help him out with it, but I don't think that's the best idea.

i. closed to clark

[ the house is lovely. it's not the kind of place lois had imagined herself living in, less metropolitan and urban and more quaint, rural in a charming kind of way. lois is doing a lot of things she hadn't imagined herself doing or experiencing these days, from having a son (even if, especially if he's from another world), living in a quaint house, being in another universe altogether.

it's lovely, but the furnishing is still a bit sparse and lois is about to suggest that she could go buy at least a desk for herself when she finds clark in her study, building what looks like one. ] You didn't develop mind-reading powers while I wasn't looking, did you? [ she asks, only mostly joking. ]

ii. open to anyone who knows a super (or lois)

[ clark knows more people than lois does, or if he doesn't know more people, he's at least more sociable, warmer than lois. she doesn't mind that; she's learned that in order to be taken seriously and get the answers she wants, she has to play hardball sometimes. it's not something she'll ever regret.

it does mean, however, that her contribution to having guests over will, at least initially, be just to offer them a drink. she's made sure there's scotch and various other things she likes in the kitchen. for the rest, she considers it clark's domain. ]

iii. closed to taako and illya

[ lois still considers taako odd, and she thinks that clark's russian friend is hiding something, but after a night of poker (and a few glasses of scotch), she really doesn't mind either of those things so much. in fact, she hasn't minded taako's oddness in a while now. she even bought umbrellas to put into his drink because he seems to like colors.

they've put the poker cards away for now and relocated to the couch in the living room. clark's off putting jon to bed and lois has toed off the heels she'd still been wearing and curled her legs underneath her body. ]

If this were a college party, this is the part where we'd start playing drinking games. [ she remarks. ]

[ They picked this room for her bedroom and study, giving Jon and Kara the space upstairs. It overlooks the backyard, and it has thicker walls to keep the noise down.

He thought hard about building a desk for her instead of buying one. Carpentry wouldn't take him long to pick him, and he could ask Flint if he had any problems.

Clark compromises by getting one secondhand. It had arrived at the house disassembled. So far, he's been unnoticed in putting it together.

He should have known he couldn't fool her. ]

Maybe. [ He waves to her very playfully. ] What do you think?

[ Nobody can sneak up on Clark. Especially not errant and hungry cousins.

He beams at her. ]

It is. I'm trying out one of the recipes you gave me.

[ He's nervous about this, having never tried anything from Krypton. Clark can't taste the food to make sure the flavor's the same. All of it is new to him. ]

I'm doing well, thanks for asking.

[ It's easier for him to be here than around the communal housing. He doesn't have to constantly listen for someone approaching when using his abilities.

Clark is used to going without, but he's been trying to make them more normal in Riverview. Everyone else has powers or doesn't blink at them. ]

We're a little close to the forest, but I think we can handle it.

[She was always so cheerful, something he rarely saw in his life, save from Sam. Being around someone like that was pleasant and genuinely nice. There was so little warmth in his world that he found himself drawn to those that could compensate.]

I'm well enough. You seem to be at home.

[He couldn't really see the difference in the colors, but took her word for it.]

What will you do with the painting?

It's not impossible. [ she pretends to consider it seriously, though she's pretty sure the answer is no. it gives her a moment just to look at him, too, broad-shouldered and building a desk for her. ] But in this case, I think it's more likely you just saw a need and decided to fill it.

[ a beat, before she adds: ] I could have gotten a desk myself, too, you know. [ it's a thank you more than a rebuke. ]

I thought I'd surprise you. [ He grins. ] Are you going to supervise?

Do I need to? [ but she's already leaning against the doorframe, still looking. ] I think I might. [ or lend a helping hand, if superman needs one. ]

You could.

[ He's not going to mind. Clark even gestures her to a chair. ]

[ she won't mind watching him work, either. or spending time with him in general. so she settles in the chair after a moment, smiling a little. ]

You're going to make me feel lazy.

You're welcome to get the other side of the table.

[ The instructions are neatly spread out on the floor in front of Clark. He can turn them towards her.

He can do this with super-speed, but that defeats the purpose. ]

[ lois shrugs, getting up again. ] You still get to do all the heavy lifting. [ she's perfectly capable of following instructions and putting together furniture; she's done it before. but never with a man she was moving in with. ]
