( closed ) lost research

who: Jim Kirk, Leonard McCoy, Peggy Carter, Re-L Mayer, Shai Ebbisaryn, Sans, Dick Grayson, Scott Lang, Yuuri Katsuki, Victor Nikiforov
what: a rescue mission
when: from May 15th through to the end of the month
where: abandoned area, along the river, the delta and the waterfalls; between the first and second walls
warnings: monster attacks, probably some injuries/blood, don't expect anything more than that; add any needed warnings on your own threads as needed, please!

Despite the risks, most of the journey was a fairly quiet one. A lot of hours walking, making their way along the riverside, trekking through the woods and across small clearings. When the sun set they'd set up camp somewhere, and as soon as it rose they got back to their feet and out towards the Delta underneath the waterfalls.

Jim made sure they had all they needed; maps, compasses, whatever devices that could help them navigate the terrain. As far as supplies went, they had plenty of covers and extra clothes to make sure they didn't suffer through the colder nights, but there were no luxuries out here. If it rained, they'd be mostly unprotected, and they could only shower and wash their clothes so long as they had the time and access to the stream of the river. There was plenty of food, hopefully enough to last them the round trip, but they also had a myriad of tools and weaponry needed for any hunting and scavenging so they didn't always have to consume from the food they'd brought along for the trip.

The creatures living out here were another concern, and on a journey this long, they were bound to run into something sooner or later. They should be packing enough weaponry to keep the team safe and everyone in one piece, though.

Hopefully, it would be worth it. Jim didn't even care if they didn't get their hands on any of that research— all he cared about was that there were people possibly lost and in danger out there, and he wanted to try and save them.

[ She'd probably laugh at Yuuri's trials and tribulations if she wasn't so focused on whatever was in her hands. Or, well, she might've helped too, but at the moment she's a little more focused on what she had and, perhaps, if there was anything else to find. Once there's a bread crumb out there Re-L is a bit like a dog with a bone, ready for some kind of reward at the end of that bread trail to say the least. ]

Something glimmering in the sun.. it could've been water but I decided to take a look anyway. [ She pauses, passing the small instrument - it looks a bit like a pressure gauge if she's honest - toward Yuuri. ]

What do you think?

[Yuuri handles it carefully--while he's familiar with some technology, he'd rather not accidentally break something that might be important.]

It doesn't look too old. [He lets it sit in his palm as he frowns down at it.] If the group we're looking for dropped this, there might be some other things of theirs lying around in the grass.

Yes, a little water damaged but nothing that's been out here too entirely long - [ Though on that note her eyes fall back amongst the reeds, squinting slightly as she moves to push a few aside, trying to make sure that there weren't more clues or pieces nearby. If one of the party had accidentally dropped their instruments as they ran, or something to that effect, she wanted to be sure she found everything. They'd have a better idea of what they'd been up to out her, at least. Or what had been going on when this person in particular had been moving through the reeds. ]

The problem is if they were running, or even trying to move away from a predator at the time it makes their trajectories damn close to completely unpredictable. People will run every which way when they're trying to escape something trying to kill them, which I'm sure isn't surprising to hear.

[ She sighs, squatting down to try and see if a new perspective will give her nw clues, which.. doesn't seem to be working out at the moment. ]

Damn. It's something, but it looks a lot like a dead end for the moment, too..

[Unfortunately, Yuuri knows she's right. Having been in a few dangerous situations himself now, he's all too aware how quickly panic can take over.]

It wouldn't hurt to look around here for a little before we head back to the others. [He holds onto the instrument for now as he attempts to push the tall reeds out of the way.] Have to say, though... this is a terrible place to drop anything if you want to find it again.

Something tells me whoever was running through here and dropped that probably didn't even realize it was gone. [ Whether it was running from monsters or something possibly even more sinister was the question. Of course it could have been an honest mistake whilst doing research, too, but her gut said it wasn't that simple. Most people would at least make a search for things they'd lost - tall reeds or not. ]

Are you sure you're going to be able to see anything through these? [ Nice, Re-L. Attempting a short joke when Yuuri isn't that much smaller. ]

I just don't want to stumble on a body in here.. granted, we'll smell it before we see it, out in the water like this.

Hey. [It's an extremely weak protest at that jab at his height. The truth is, these reeds are tall, and neither of them will be able to see much through it as they are.]

Erugh.... [The disgusted sound escapes him before he can talk himself. Suddenly, he's not looking so eager to investigate the grassy area.] I guess if they were being chased by something, there might be bodies.

[Exhaling forcefully, stomach turning just a little at the thought.] Not the best way to end the mission, though. It would be pretty awful if we came all this way just to find that they're...gone.

What, Mr. Medic in Training can't handle a dead body? [ She knows it's not normal for Yuuri to have seen something like that, but she can't help the urge to rib him a little while she could. It's absolutely done because she wants to give him a little bit of a hard time instead of an actual expectation. The first time sh'd seen a body or a murder had been fairly rough on her, too. But, well, she'd been expected to hide it and had performed as necessary, as with all things. ]

If something was chasing them for food, there may be nothing left at all, or just bones. Depends on how thoroughly they've been eaten, if they have. [ Always the realist, even when she's probably better off sparing Yuuri the details. ]

It's always been a possibility, unfortunately. Being out in this remote of an area... anything can happen. I'd prefer to bring back live bodies in one piece, though, personally. They're a lot easier to transport.

Not really. [He says it somewhat petulantly. Even if he's slowly getting accustomed to the sight of blood while shadowing Dr. McCoy at the hospital, he'd rather not see a dead body if he has the choice.

As she continues on, Yuuri's face gains a greenish tint. He'd just started feeling a familiar sort of gnawing at his stomach earlier, but he's definitely not hungry anymore.]

Does it...get easier? The more of them you see. [He doesn't know how else she could joke so calmly about it.]

[ How can she talk about it so casually? Because she's Re-L Mayer - she's spent most of her life shoving down feelings to prevent being seen as too emotional in a society where emotions were seen as unnecessary. Essentially, it came with the territory. Plus, she's having fun giving him a little bit of a ribbing - if they did come upon a corpse there's no way she'd want to deal with Yuuri throwing up on top of it all, so she'd leave him alone.

Mostly. ]

The first is always jarring, I think. But over time it's easier to pull yourself away from the thought of the fact that there's a body in front of you and move on with the investigation as a whole. Dealing with inspections and investigations it's... fairly easy to become accustomed to a gruesome scene. [ A pause, then : ]

It also helps that many of my cases previous to coming her had been murders.. and not neat ones either. [ She moves toward Yuuri with carefully chosen steps, wanting to make sure he's close by. ] Either way, there's most likely not one close. You'd smell it.

[He goes quiet for a moment.] I threw up back on the Eluvio--you know, when people were discovering the bodies around the ship? It... was a little easier just hearing about it in those network broadcasts, but when Jason and Vaas actually showed part of it on video, I just... [Yuuri shakes his head, looking like he's growing nauseated just from the memory of it.]

It's hard to imagine just... getting used to something like that.

Maybe that's not the right term... you become.. desensitized is the right word, I suppose. It still registers that it's a body, just.. you don't react as strongly to the fact that there's a corpse in front of you. [ She shrugs. It's all hand in hand with living, at this point. And besides, her range of emotions are so beaten down at the moment it's a wonder she can react to anything strongly enough to have it be noticeable. Either way, she's following him through the reeds, a bit taller and able to see a little bit more if anything was trying to stalk them. ]

Eventually it will happen for you, too, I think.
