( closed ) lost research

who: Jim Kirk, Leonard McCoy, Peggy Carter, Re-L Mayer, Shai Ebbisaryn, Sans, Dick Grayson, Scott Lang, Yuuri Katsuki, Victor Nikiforov
what: a rescue mission
when: from May 15th through to the end of the month
where: abandoned area, along the river, the delta and the waterfalls; between the first and second walls
warnings: monster attacks, probably some injuries/blood, don't expect anything more than that; add any needed warnings on your own threads as needed, please!

Despite the risks, most of the journey was a fairly quiet one. A lot of hours walking, making their way along the riverside, trekking through the woods and across small clearings. When the sun set they'd set up camp somewhere, and as soon as it rose they got back to their feet and out towards the Delta underneath the waterfalls.

Jim made sure they had all they needed; maps, compasses, whatever devices that could help them navigate the terrain. As far as supplies went, they had plenty of covers and extra clothes to make sure they didn't suffer through the colder nights, but there were no luxuries out here. If it rained, they'd be mostly unprotected, and they could only shower and wash their clothes so long as they had the time and access to the stream of the river. There was plenty of food, hopefully enough to last them the round trip, but they also had a myriad of tools and weaponry needed for any hunting and scavenging so they didn't always have to consume from the food they'd brought along for the trip.

The creatures living out here were another concern, and on a journey this long, they were bound to run into something sooner or later. They should be packing enough weaponry to keep the team safe and everyone in one piece, though.

Hopefully, it would be worth it. Jim didn't even care if they didn't get their hands on any of that research— all he cared about was that there were people possibly lost and in danger out there, and he wanted to try and save them.

[ ooc: this is a mingle log, so everyone feel free to write up your own top levels and/or tag around as much as you like! ]

Hey. [It's an extremely weak protest at that jab at his height. The truth is, these reeds are tall, and neither of them will be able to see much through it as they are.]

Erugh.... [The disgusted sound escapes him before he can talk himself. Suddenly, he's not looking so eager to investigate the grassy area.] I guess if they were being chased by something, there might be bodies.

[Exhaling forcefully, stomach turning just a little at the thought.] Not the best way to end the mission, though. It would be pretty awful if we came all this way just to find that they're...gone.

What, Mr. Medic in Training can't handle a dead body? [ She knows it's not normal for Yuuri to have seen something like that, but she can't help the urge to rib him a little while she could. It's absolutely done because she wants to give him a little bit of a hard time instead of an actual expectation. The first time sh'd seen a body or a murder had been fairly rough on her, too. But, well, she'd been expected to hide it and had performed as necessary, as with all things. ]

If something was chasing them for food, there may be nothing left at all, or just bones. Depends on how thoroughly they've been eaten, if they have. [ Always the realist, even when she's probably better off sparing Yuuri the details. ]

It's always been a possibility, unfortunately. Being out in this remote of an area... anything can happen. I'd prefer to bring back live bodies in one piece, though, personally. They're a lot easier to transport.

Not really. [He says it somewhat petulantly. Even if he's slowly getting accustomed to the sight of blood while shadowing Dr. McCoy at the hospital, he'd rather not see a dead body if he has the choice.

As she continues on, Yuuri's face gains a greenish tint. He'd just started feeling a familiar sort of gnawing at his stomach earlier, but he's definitely not hungry anymore.]

Does it...get easier? The more of them you see. [He doesn't know how else she could joke so calmly about it.]

[ How can she talk about it so casually? Because she's Re-L Mayer - she's spent most of her life shoving down feelings to prevent being seen as too emotional in a society where emotions were seen as unnecessary. Essentially, it came with the territory. Plus, she's having fun giving him a little bit of a ribbing - if they did come upon a corpse there's no way she'd want to deal with Yuuri throwing up on top of it all, so she'd leave him alone.

Mostly. ]

The first is always jarring, I think. But over time it's easier to pull yourself away from the thought of the fact that there's a body in front of you and move on with the investigation as a whole. Dealing with inspections and investigations it's... fairly easy to become accustomed to a gruesome scene. [ A pause, then : ]

It also helps that many of my cases previous to coming her had been murders.. and not neat ones either. [ She moves toward Yuuri with carefully chosen steps, wanting to make sure he's close by. ] Either way, there's most likely not one close. You'd smell it.

[He goes quiet for a moment.] I threw up back on the Eluvio--you know, when people were discovering the bodies around the ship? It... was a little easier just hearing about it in those network broadcasts, but when Jason and Vaas actually showed part of it on video, I just... [Yuuri shakes his head, looking like he's growing nauseated just from the memory of it.]

It's hard to imagine just... getting used to something like that.

Maybe that's not the right term... you become.. desensitized is the right word, I suppose. It still registers that it's a body, just.. you don't react as strongly to the fact that there's a corpse in front of you. [ She shrugs. It's all hand in hand with living, at this point. And besides, her range of emotions are so beaten down at the moment it's a wonder she can react to anything strongly enough to have it be noticeable. Either way, she's following him through the reeds, a bit taller and able to see a little bit more if anything was trying to stalk them. ]

Eventually it will happen for you, too, I think.
