i. perimeter guard patrol
[There's nothing in the world to set Sigrun at ease like a good old military routine. It sucks, of course, being one of the regular guard again, doing regular patrols like a dumb grunt and taking orders. After being a Captain with her own squad for so long, it stings a little.ii. carnivale
But the routine is good. Soothing to her deeply military soul. The pattern of patrols and the shooting range and training and eating in the mess is great for her mental health, and somehow, whenever she's out on a patrol around the edge of the Inhabited City making sure the wall is secure, whenever she's on her way back to the barracks, instead of tired, she's highly energized. Talkative.
Fellow guards are welcome to join her on patrol, or anyone can run into her at breakfast at a café or in the PG mess hall after a nighttime run around the wall.]
Sigrun has a top-level at Carnivale here!iii. wildcard
If you're interested in threading with Sigrun, but not my prompts, feel free to throw me a random starter or send me a PM or message me oncaffemisto to plot something! I know my Perimeter Guard prompt doesn't have much of a hook and is pretty open-ended, so if you want to throw your character out there minding their own business, I'll have Sigrun approach them.

[South might be dolled up in a suit of armor, but Sigrun is kind of the opposite. Dressed in her Perimeter Guard uniform with a hunting dagger at her belt and a very old-fashioned rifle slung across her back. No armor, no helmet, nothing that has a computer chip or processor. It's fairly obvious fairly quickly that she's an old-school type.
Also pretty obvious that she has zero fear. She's grinning as she walks over to the gate where they agreed to meet, at least until she sees this giant purple monstrosity. Jumping halfway out of her skin, she yelps a little, violet eyes wide.]
Whoa! What the hell are you!?
Re: closed to South
I'm a robot from the future.
[She says in her most deadpanned voice before giving another laugh and tugging off her helmet]
Never seen this sort of armor before?
no subject
Hah. Nice try. I can totally tell you're the same person I was texting with. Bad attitude.
[Laughing a bit, she rests a hand on her hip and looks the suit up and down.]
Nope. That thing's crazy. Where'd you get it?

[There's a lilting of challenge in it, and she raises her brows, still looking the thing up and down. It's the opposite of Sigrun, who's dressed in a plain Perimeter Guard uniform, with an AK-47 slung across her back. No armour, no shields.]
Bet you just get nervous going outside the walls without that thing.

Today she's not shooting, though-- she's focused on the guns the Guard has for practice in the shooting galleries. She has the pieces of one laid out in front of her on a towel draped over a bench, in fact, and she's very methodically cleaning each part.
For all that she seems very focused on her current task, when Sigrun moves towards the lockers along the back, she pipes up.]
If you're using one of the facility's weapons, take from the right side of the rack.
no subject
Today, she's planning to try one of the laser guns that the weapons trainer told her about in the morning. It took a while, but she finally understood what a laser was when the trainer compared it to burning leaves with a beam of light from a magnifying glass. It kind of makes sense, and Sigrun's fine with 'kind of' as long as it means she can shoot things.
She's perusing the rack of weapons when the other woman comments that she should take right side. Sighing, Sigrun puts her hands on her hips and glances over at her.]
Hey, would you mind giving me a hand? Which ones are the laser ones again?
no subject
The white ones with three notches along the side. The ones on the right have all been serviced recently. The others are all in a chancier state, projectile weapons included.
no subject
Glancing over at Breq again, she turns at her advice and peruses the weapons on the shelf that she mentioned, noting which have been serviced, and which are chancy.]
Thanks for the tip. I've never used the laser ones before. You think I should wait for an instructor?
no subject
[The examination of Sigrun lasts another moment or two, before she gestures the concern off with a wave.]
Unless you're doing trick shots, the firing process is only negligibly different. The differences are in the lack of kickback and the speed at which it hits the target, and those are best discovered through experience. In my opinion.
[She reconsiders, then adds,] Tinted goggles are also a reasonable precaution.
no subject
[A casual smile.]
I'm used to guns that are a lot more uh...low tech than these. Mostly hunting rifles, shotguns, and semi-autos.
[At the mention of a lack of kickback and increased speed, though, she seems to perk up, eyes bright.]
Whoa, wait, they have no kickback and they're faster? Are they quiet too? Please tell me they're quiet.
no subject
[She shrugs, then starts pointing to them.]
Those ones lose charge quickly, even on the range. All of them are highly visible. None of them leave the same kind of damage as a projectile weapon. Others simulate firing.
[She shrugs, lowering her hand again to start adding the next piece back onto the gun in front of her.]
There are always balances. What do you want to use them for?
no subject
Visible's never really been all that big a problem, at least not at home. I'm still getting used to how things are different here. The monsters have better eyes, you know? It's not all about sound.
[A little sigh, and she glances back at the other woman.]
Just doing my job as Perimeter Guard. Protecting the walls and the people, you know? Expanding this place so we can grow. Same as back home.
no subject
[She's already making calculations about that, her interest dragged away from the weapon she carries to instead focus on Sigrun. Lack of knowledge of laser guns doesn't necessarily mean a reality less technologically advanced than her own, considering the projectile weapons that she herself uses.
Without asking what she thinks of space, there's no accounting for that, either. But it certainly seems to be a more dangerous place than most of the annexed worlds of the Radch, where the wildlife was rarely, if ever, a threat.]
no subject
[Sigrun says it casually, but a moment later, she sighs as if very put upon, and turns to look at the other woman instead of the guns.]
Right, I keep forgetting we're the only place with the Rash. It's a kind of virus that turns animals into weird gross monsters, all deformed and hungry. They eat people, infect 'em with the virus if they're not immune...I'm immune, don't worry, and apparently not a carrier. They put me in quarantine for like two weeks when I got here.
[She waves a hand.]
The monsters here, sometimes they're bigger, and they look different, but it's all still pretty familiar. You know?
no subject
I can't say I've heard of anything like that that wasn't a biological weapon. [And even those were too horrible for the Radch to bother with-- annexations were messy, but creating monsters out of your future citizens would be much more troublesome than simply executing them.]/small>
Sensible. The creatures here are dangerous, but not contagious, as far as I'm aware. [She pauses.] Not that it's a good idea to get bitten anyway.
no subject
This one wasn't on purpose, far as we know. Then again, the people in the Old World were kinda bonkers. They had plastic books and a bunch of other dumb stuff that made no sense, so who knows where the Rash came from? Maybe they made it.
[It's the first time she's ever wondered that, and it's not a pleasant thought. In fact, it leaves a twisty little knot of anxiety in her gut.]
Good. Monsters are bad enough without worrying about losing people to a disease.
no subject
I suppose it doesn't much matter here. Unless the knowledge would change your treatment of that threat where you're from-- if you're aiming to return.
[She begins to inspect the next piece of the weapon she's working on, then picks up a second to check their fit.]
i
He's got a rifle slung over his shoulder and he walks the route with easy posture, relaxed but alert, eyes flicking to the direction of every out-of-place noise as they keep to the wall.]
I never know whether to be glad or disappointed when patrols are uneventful.
no subject
Of course, she never thought a place as fancy as this could have anywhere near as much trouble with marauding monsters as they did back home. That had been a pretty dumb assumption, it turned out, with all the monsters out there. At least none of them are sick with anything, at least not that she's seen yet.
Still, this patrol's pretty boring, so when the guy she's patrolling with starts talking, she sees no problem with chewing the fat a bit.]
Right? It's a bit boring, but at the same time, it's like a vacation. A vacation from a vacation mission.
[A pause, thoughtful.]
Then again that vacation turned out to be a huge pain. Here's hoping this patrol isn't the same, right?
no subject
No luck with vacations, huh? [He's not sure what vacation she's talking about, but he can sympathize. He hasn't even tried to take one in... When was his last period of leave? 1944? Early '45? Too long to recall very clearly.] I guess I should be hoping it stays quiet like this. When it's quiet for too long, you start to wonder when it's going to go wrong, though.
no subject
No. I volunteered for this exploration mission into the Silent World with a couple of kids and this Danish guy because it seemed like it would be easy, but...
[She trails off, feeling that abrupt queasy feeling she gets when she thinks about Lalli and Emil, left behind, her head saying they're dead and her heart saying they can't be. Frowning again, she worries at her lower lip with her teeth and then changing the topic quickly when he gives her an out.]
Hah. You have a point, not that I'm really used to 'quiet' too much. You think there's anything stirring out here?
[Pausing, she prods at a bush with the end of her gun, trying to startle out any waiting monsters before she passes it.]
i
She made her way there after cleaning up from a shift, spotting one of other guard-members at a table. "Would you mind a dining companion for breakfast?"
I am completely canonblind I hope I don't mess this up.
When the girl comes over and asks if she can join her for breakfast, Sigrun's face lights up and she nods, patting the chair beside her, chewing enthusiastically and swallowing the bite of pancakes she's got in her mouth before talking.
"Sure! No sweat. You coming in from a patrol or heading out?"
Re: I am completely canonblind I hope I don't mess this up.
She smiled and pulled out the other chair from the table to join her. "Coming in from a patrol."
A rather eventful one, and she was looking forward to a breakfast she didn't have to concoct herself. "Yourself?"
When a server arrived at their table, Elizabeth ordered a pot of ceylon tea and a raisin bagel with jam and butter.
no subject
Still, it's not like she doesn't like those things. On other women. Women who are prettier than her. Like Elizabeth.
Resting her chin in her hand as the other woman sits down across from her, she grins.
"Nice. Same here. I was out on a long double-shift run with one of the guys, just the two of us. More stealth than anything, looking for any breaks in the wall. Nothing special, but I'm still pumped up."
When the server comes by, Sigrun asks for another cup of tea, and cuts another slice off her pancake. Honestly, the food is probably the best thing about this place, far as she's concerned.
"How'd yours go?"
no subject
"Where I could say the same. Unfortunately, several times in the evening we had to stop several of these beasts from burrowing under the fense. Of course, we stopped them, but the smell and sounds did attract even more unwanted attention."
The server arrived with a small tea service and mug. Normally, she preferred her tea black, with only a little sugar, but this called for the full treatment.
no subject
She punctuates this statement by sliding her knife into the top of her stack of pancakes like a demonstration, before continuing.
"The noisier you are, the more of them hear you and come swarming over, then you're overwhelmed and it gets ugly. That's when you lose people."
Then she leans in a bit more, chin in her hand again, as Elizabeth continues talking, mentioning the beasts burrowing under the fence.
"Yep, that's exactly what I mean. You say they're digging under the fence? I wonder if we should up patrols..."
