I. About Town

[Teddy can be seen at various places around Riverview, but he seems to favor heading out to the park, to the coffee shops. He even sniffs out all the best places to pick up comics and video games. He doesn't mind striking up a conversation while standing in line, or if a title of a comic or game really catches his attention.]

II. Hitting the Clubs

[After his experiences with the cultists? Sleep still isn't coming quite so easy and honestly, the loud music that plays in the clubs around Riverview is distracting and, in a way, a relaxing way to just not think. For the most part, Teddy can't get drunk, but he's legal to drink here and he at least can be seen socially carrying something in his hand or accepting drinks bought for him. Sometimes he can be seen out on the dance floors or just sitting back and people watching or making some conversation here and there.]

III. Training

[Whether it's at the gym or basketball court, or even taking an early morning jog around Riverview, Teddy can be seen out and around Riverview. He might not have a job that necessarily requires strength, and he might have some natural advantages that way, but training and pushing himself is something he genuinely enjoys. As crazy as his life has been since his arrival? He could use some normal.

Teddy might offer to spar with people here and there, although if he's clearly at an advantage, he's holding back. He might invite people to play against him in a game of basketball or offer to spot anyone who needs it in the gym.]

IV. The Incredible Hulkling

[Citizens of Riverview may see a large, green winged man in the skies or perched here and there, patrolling for people to help or handling whatever monsters may be around. Sometimes he's just large and green, on foot and tall enough to tower over most people. He doesn't mean harm though. If someone is bothering you, he'll step in to give a hand. If someone is up to no good, Hulkling is on the case.

He can also be seen leaving the city for some proper monster fighting. Again, sometimes punching things that might want to hurt innocent people is just good stress relief.]

No, I guess not... I was in space for a while before I came here. I've been shot at with alien guns before, but-- I've never actually seen one that close.

[And he's so glad she didn't shoot him with it, you know.]

Does it shoot lasers or something?

[Sorry, he might be an alien, himself, but he was raised on earth and he's a giant science fiction nerd.]

You should consider that fortunate.

[She should probably be less on a hairpin trigger in Riverview, but the kidnappings and monster attacks have not left her particularly relaxed.]

The gun? No. The ammunition is a particular type of device.

Probably... I'm not complaining about it, really. Although a gun probably comes in handy around here, with cultists and stuff.

[Teddy has had an experience a little too close to all of that, honestly. Not exactly fun.]

Really? What does it do? Or are they like... really high tech space bullets?

By their design, they travel a certain distance after hitting something solid.

[It might not be the most satisfying explanation, but it's the most accurate one Breq can give. She doesn't reach into her coat to pull out the gun, either, just crosses her arms loosely.]

[It's fine-- he doesn't need to see it up close. It's just-- kind of cool to hear about, you know?]

That sounds-- well, pretty deadly actually. I'm definitely glad you didn't shoot when you saw me.

[He pauses.] What are you doing out anyway? Enjoying a walk, dipping into vigilantism?

I'm not suited for vigilantism.

[Not when her instincts remain shoot first, ask questions later. As Teddy very nearly found out.]

I was searching for a cafe.

You know, if you want-- I can probably point you in the direction of a decent one.

[He gives a more sheepish smile, shrugging his shoulders.]

Vigilantism means you definitely need caffeine every once in a while, you know?

I can imagine.

[The same way the soldiers in her acquaintance always seemed to be in need of tea, on long nights. More than usual.]

You frequent this neighborhood, then?

[Good to know, if she goes wandering again and sees more winged outlines against the roofs of the building.]

Yeah... I try to move around. I know there's probably not the same danger as there is back home, but--

[He gives a shrug of his shoulders.]

Creatures, cultists... I don't want anyone else to be kidnapped if I can help it, you know?

Nor do I.

[She tilts her head, acknowledging that point.]

I work within the Perimeter Guard to that end, but more military units aren't meant for internal policing.

Oh, yeah? The Perimeter Guard does do plenty of good on its own. I guess sometimes it feels like there just needs to be a more--

[He idly waves a hand.]

Personal view of things, I guess? Someone to keep an eye on things that happens on the street... which I guess is what police are for, but-- a little extra security never hurts. Or maybe I'm just a little paranoid.

The first vigilante I met here dealt with the occasional street harasser--it's a useful in between, I believe. An active citizenry can be a benefit.

[Which is her way of saying it may not be a paranoid thing.]

And after everything, may even be necessary. There's no Station AI here to know everything that happens.

Yeah... I've dealt with a few of those, myself. Back home, they were really popular.

[He gives a short, wry smile at that.]

Station AI?

The vigilantism? Or the street harassment? [She asks it wryly, quirking one eyebrow at him as she finally gestures, inviting him to lead the way.] If you don't mind showing me to one of those cafes, I can compensate you for your time. [And also buy him a drink for almost but not quite pulling a gun on him.]

Hub Stations, where I'm from, have and AI to maintain the station's functions and monitor the residents.

Both? I patrolled the streets back home too... stopped a lot of idiots who thought it was cool to harass people minding their own business.

[He starts to lead the way to the cafe, letting out a laugh.] Hey, it's totally fine.

[He turns his head to look back at her, nodding his head.]

Do they watch the residents everywhere? Or just on the streets?

Everyone has a microchip from birth, so the Station knows where they are.

[As they move, Breq begins to explain, talking about it as though it's perfectly normal.]

When the Station losing track of you means potentially being on the wrong side of an airlock, most accept the idea.

Wow-- are you okay with that? I mean, I get that it has its uses, but...

[It sounds creepy to him, to be honest.]

Entirely.

[And she doesn't sound put off, too. She gestures as she continues to speak, calm and rational.]

A Station isn't being used to monitor its residents by the government, or the station police force, not primarily. A Station is monitoring its citizens to protect them. It may report dangers to those authorities, but if it feels its residents are being mistreated, it has a way of making that known.

It still sounds... uncomfortable, I guess? For me. I was in a situation back home where the government wanted to keep an eye on anybody with super powers... people felt like we needed to be watched, that we could be dangers. It wasn't something I was a huge fan of.

[He shrugs his shoulders. It's not his place to judge, right? So--]

But I mean, if it's not-- used to lock people up for just saying or thinking the wrong things and no one feels bad about it... then it's probably a pretty thorough system at least.

Any system can be corrupted. [She admits that easily enough, almost casually, with a shrug and a flick of her fingers.] I'm sure it has, in some parts of the Radch. With years of travel separating the entirety of space, it's easily the case that illegal offenses can be hidden away.

The distinction is, it wouldn't be the Station AI causing the corruption.

Just the people behind it or something?

[He gives a wry smile.]

I mean, that seems to be the case a lot...

Exactly so. People are people, after all.

[She tilts a hand to him, acknowledging, then gestures ahead of them, to a particular storefront.]

Is that the cafe you were thinking of?

Oh-- yeah. That's definitely it.

[He moves to get the door for them, motioning her in first.]

They really do have some of the best coffee here.

[And Breq nods to him as she ducks through it, accepting the polite gesture.]

I look forward to trying it.

What kind do you like? Regular or are you the type of person who likes more cream and flavor than coffee?

[Although to be honest, Teddy is sort of weak to all the fancy flavored ones, himself.]
