In the days leading up to March 1st, residents new and old will notice preparations beginning, a flurry of activity getting the city ready for the upcoming celebration: Sampremi. This is one of Riverview's four yearly celebrations of love, this one focused on sexual love and lust, and sexual relationships that might bloom into more (or not). Traditions associated with Sampremi are a roving street market, raves where residents can seek out some free love and get a little crazy, a massive week-long kink convention, and a tech expo with all-ages and adult options.

a celebration of sexual love and lust

Riverview has always been a place focused on love and building connections in order to foster community, and for a lot of people, sex is part of that, which makes it something worth celebrating! For people who use sex as a way to connect with others, even if only for a short time, or those who use it as a way to connect on a deeper level with the ones they already love, Sampremi is the perfect holiday to get their freak on in a host of new and exciting or comfortable and familiar ways. The holiday features a large kink convention, where various entities in the city can show off their toys, explain their niche kinks, and share their insights with anyone who might be interested, a series of raves that are both all-ages and adult where residents can find someone(s) to share a night (or a week, a few months, or even a life) with. This year, there is a large tech expo where cutting edge tech companies in the city are sharing their newest toys, like improved virtual reality, robotics advances, and many other types of toys - all for work, play, or, in the spirit of the holiday, pleasure. And for those who don't want to connect through sex or who aren't old enough to, there are dances, games, and an entire market full of street food that's meant for sharing, so they can connect in other ways.

i. color raves

Advertised on flyers and digital screens around the city, made to pop as if they were under blacklight, is a series of what's called "color raves" that are happening in various large empty warehouse spaces around the city. They are called color raves for the bright colorful lights, the preponderance of glowsticks that attendees wave around, and for the brightly colored powder for attendees to play with, some of which is spiked with a mild party drug and some of which is just for fun (with the difference clearly marked, of course). There are three types of color rave - adult, all-ages, and youth raves.

(CW: DRUG USE) At each adult rave and all-ages rave there is one specific room where attendees can enter (after proving themselves 18+), and dance or play tag with brightly colored powder that contains small amounts of a legal party drug commonly available in Riverview, which is absorbed through the skin. Not much more intoxicating than having a few beers, the effects of the drug are a pleasant low-key buzzing euphoria, positive sensitivity to touch, a heightening of desires for intimacy, and a mild lowering of inhibitions. Once a character has been hit with the powder, the color lingers on the skin so other attendees can know who has partaken, but once the powder makes contact with a surface (whether it is skin, clothing, or structural) it deactivates, meaning that partakers can safely dance with non-partakers without sharing the intoxicating effects.

Adult raves will have bouncers at the door to ensure that anyone entering is 18+, and there is no limit to when and where the debauchery happens. Clothing is optional, showing skin is encouraged, and there are a lot of neatly tucked away spaces for attendees to get some time alone with one or more than one person, as well as spaces intended for orgies. The atmosphere is sex-positive and non-judgemental, open to any orientation or preference, with various forms of protection available for free, however, to ensure that everyone plays safe there are sober security teams out en masse at all premises to oversee the events.

All-ages raves are open to anyone who wishes to attend, regardless of age. There are bouncers at the door who will check ID and stamp the hand of anyone who is 18+ with a special ink that shows up under blacklight for easy identification. At all-ages raves, 18+ and underage characters can mingle, but there are specific areas set aside for only 18+ characters where they can get down and dirty either in private or the open.

Adult and all-ages raves will have only spiked powder to avoid confusion.

Youth raves are intended only for younger characters under 18, so they can stay up all night and dance like crazy, and meet other young people in the city. The legal drinking age in Riverview Quarantine is 14, and so anyone over 14 can enter and indulge in a few drinks, dancing, and playing tag with a version of the colored powder featured at the adult raves that won't give you anything but a sugar high. There is copious amounts of security on site to ensure that everyone is safe, as well as nurses and off-duty police officers to offer advice or care for anyone who overindulges out of lack of experience. Youth raves will have only sugar powder, brightly colored and sweet to the taste, meant for fun and to play tag with rather than to cause intoxication.

ii. kink convention

For the week of March 4-10 there will be a massive kink convention on the top floor of one of the large exhibition centers downtown, limited to characters 18+. The exhibition is a sexy adult informational convention featuring various kinks and fetishes. Whether you're into leather, latex, lace, or anything else, you'll be able to find the clothes, toys, guides, books, erotica, fiction, and a wide variety of other interesting stuff to explore. While the atmosphere is sex-positive and there are private and public (for the voyeurs and exhibitionists in the room) venues for having sex, it's definitely focused on exploration and information about different stuff to try.

If someone has thought of it and figured it sounded sexy, it can be found here, and with Riverview's high level of tech advancement and widespread acceptance of magic, things can get pretty kinky. Whatever your kink is, there's probably a VR program, sex toy, potion, or spell that can make it happen, and someone who's got the downlow on how to make it great.

iii. tech expo

Riverview prides itself on its technological advancement, and so, running concurrently with the Kink Convention on March 4-10 and on the bottom floor of the same convention center, various cutting-edge tech companies in the city will be sponsoring a Tech Expo. The expo features demonstrations of all of the most advanced technology that's coming into use in the city, ranging from advancements in VR and holotech to robotics and gadgets, you can find the latest and greatest in almost any area of modern technology. Attendees will be able to come with a friend or a date or anything in between to play VR games, enjoy holoprojected escape rooms and puzzles, meet robot pets, try out the most recent music player or that new cell phone that can bend without breaking, and a wide variety of other gadgets.

While most of the tech expo is all-ages and non-sexual, there is a decently-sized adult area where characters must show ID proving they are 18+ in order to enter, where the technology is mostly related to sexual use. This area features advanced sex toys, VR systems intended to explore sex with other people in a virtual environment with no strings attached, sexy video games and holoprograms, and many other sensual technological.

iv. street market

One of the major draws of the festival is the special street food that can only be obtained this time of year. Almost everything you can buy at the Sampremi Festival is meant to be shared - whether it's one piece of meat on two or more sticks or desserts baked with a narrow part in the middle for convenient tearing, everything is built to be shared. The stalls sell everything from cups of soup, sandwiches, roasted or fried meat, deep-fried vegetables and cakes, dumplings, donuts, bagels, turnovers, and anything else you can think of.

Many of the savory dishes are based on the meat of a particular fowl native to the moon Riverview is situated on that has a taste and texture halfway between chicken and duck, cooked to be spicy (ranging from very mild to throat-burning). Many of the desserts are based around a fruit native to the moon that is spherical, red-orange, and has a light sweet taste that is similar to a combination of mango, pineapple, and strawberry. Both ingredients are considered to be aphrodisiacs. Of course, the foods aren't actually aphrodisiacs and any effect is purely placebo, though there are some booths (clearly marked and with someone to check ID) that sell actual aphrodisiac-laced foods and drinks to people who are 18+.

The festival features an entire row of fair games ranging from very high-tech games featuring virtual reality and neon holograms to extremely old-fashioned games with darts and balloons or balls and glasses. The games all have prizes in various shapes and sizes, with the standard stuffed animals, but also with goods and special items donated by any business in the city; ranging from tiny prizes to huge and expensive ones. Due to the nature of the holiday, many of the stalls are set up to cater to winning a prize for your partner(s), and due to the nature of the Quarantine, a lot of them involve aiming or other aspects of pretending to fight.

Originally, the part of the street festival that involved an actual market, with stalls and booths set up with goods, was aimed primarily at romantic trinkets like flowers or jewelry, gifts intended to be purchased for a loved one. As time has gone by, however, this aspect of the market has increased, with many businesses participating, though the emphasis is still on small businesses and anything relating to local culture rather than booths for any of the larger more corporate businesses. There is still plenty of jewelry to be found, for sure, mostly handmade and artisan, but the scope of the Market has widened immeasurably. The Sampremi Market is an excellent place to find specialty foods, clothing, jewelry, art, or other goods that were originally native to cultures on other planets in this reality, or other realities altogether. Many residents in the city use the market to share their unique cultural goods and traditional dress with others.

Thanks. [ This is honestly one of the most resourceful hauls Finn's seen anybody get in the middle of a rave so far. He was getting concerned that he might have to start stealing wet wipes from the sex supply tables. What a time that would have been.

He slams the painkillers and a mouthful of water without question, because they forged a mosh pit bond and he trusts in that. His legs are already starting to feel sore after all the jumping. It's turning into a little bit of a time. ]

I'm starting to think something hit me in the face earlier. [ Dry as the desert sand? Yes. His smile still hasn't died out completely, though. ] But if we're trying to be positive, it could be worse than it is. Been a pretty lucky night for me so far.

[Roy's Seen Some Shit, so he's more on the resourceful side than a person might expect a complete doofus like him to be. When Finn's done swallowing his painkillers, Roy takes the bottle back and dumps a bit of the water on the paper towels before handing it back to Finn and sliding closer on the seat, reaching out with one hand to tilt Finn's head back a little to get a better look at his nose. It's kinda nice, because Finn's skin is warm and he's nice and solid, and it feels good to have a bit of physical contact.

Which is kind of pathetic, really.

When Finn makes that deadpan joke, Roy can't help it, he bursts out laughing, shaking his head while he starts dabbing carefully at Finn's upper lip and around the corners of his nose, clearing away some of the splatter so he can see the damage.]

I consider any night where I'm only bleeding from one spot a lucky night, personally.

[It's warm and casual, and he raises one red brow as he grins at Finn.]

Even more lucky if I run into someone cool at the rave, you know? So I'm gonna call it a lucky night on my end too.

[Leaning back, he takes a look at Finn's face, laughs again softly.]

You know, this is a good look on you.

[ What a nerd. Finn doesn't think that, it just needed to be established in the narration what a nerd Roy is.

Finn likes warm and casual. It's only really been a possibility in life for the past handful of months, but he took to it like a fish to water. Or maybe like a sponge to water, as the case may be. Being in close quarters and navigating is par for the course. Casual contact hasn't really lost the novelty, even living with Poe "hugs like a punctuation" Dameron.

So no complaints here, honestly. If anything, he's got the prime angle to watch Roy's focus zero in before he laughs. Which he's not against. Like almost everyone he's met here, Roy has a nice face and it's hard to miss. And in light of his clear efforts to be careful, Finn puts his sitting-still training to its best work yet. ]

First time trying it. [ He gets caught in a brief loop of trying to pull an unimpressed face, only it involves a little nose-scrunching, which hurts, which makes him want to scrunch his nose up more, like it's supposed to help. Is it still worth it??? Yes. ] Last time trying it. Hopefully. I usually meet people without making them mop me up.

[ Disaster bi power move: I swear I'm not bleeding all the time and could still be cool. ]

Not that I don't-- I still appreciate it. I mean.

[Nerd is definitely a name Roy would embrace. Has embraced. He's been a nerd about as long as he's been alive, whether it's because of his dorky jokes or his robotics obsession or whatever else. Nerdiness runs in his blood.

Honestly? Roy's also all about warm and casual. Those things have been woven through the fabric of what he is his whole life, just like his tendency to the nerdy, but it's not actually all that often that those parts of him are welcome, wanted. Usually he's working hard to get through the armor on someone or another who doesn't really want his attention or affection. Having someone around, even for like 15 minutes so far, who really wants that attention, feels good.

When Finn tries to make a face and then wrinkles his nose, winces, and goes into a little cycle of it, Roy laughs, abruptly. It's cute, and Roy can't help but be incredibly charmed by it.]

Thanks for the reassurance, man, but some of my best friendships and relationships have started with mopping someone up. And I mean, usually the circumstances aren't as uh...enjoyable as this.

[Is he flirting? He's pretty sure he's flirting. Wow.]

[ The story of two dinguses who manage to charm each other by being... huge dinguses. It's good to be able to appreciate your own brand. And someone else's biceps, probably.

Roy's laugh is infectious enough to put a grin on Finn's face. And the rest is enough to keep it there. ]

I know the feeling. [ See: how he met anyone before he got here. ] You're definitely pretty enjoyable, though.

[It's a fine and beautiful story, honestly. A bit dingusy, but that's kinda the point, right? Also biceps are great.

That grin is really good though. Like, seriously good. Roy could get used to looking at that grin. Which is a terrible thing to think, honestly. Because there's a bit of expectation there, and Roy's getting used to expectations being a bad thing - no expectations means you don't get hurt.

Wow. Downer, much?]

Oh, uh. Wow thanks. So are you. You know, we should definitely hang out sometime that's not in the middle of a rave. Or is in the middle of a rave. We could totally hang out here.

[ He's kinda like ah yes success internally. He's at a rave with a sore nose and a cool dude. This is honestly great by his usual standards. ]

I mean, I think we could manage both. Unless you're only around when they're throwing parties in warehouses.

[ Like the modern version of chance meetings with mermaids or something, I guess. ]

Both is great. Seriously.

[Roy's grin softens, his eyes warm, and there's no mistaking the hint of relief behind his expression. The fact that Finn wants to hang out too shouldn't be as big a deal to him as it is, it really shouldn't. It wouldn't, if he wasn't such a loser, if he hadn't been arriving from a long string of rejections and abandonment that makes the whole concept of friendship a bit of a sore spot.

Maybe this whole new world thing isn't such a negative. Maybe he'll be able to start fresh and make real friends that won't ditch him when things get tough. Is it stupid to hope for that? Probably. But he's stupid. It can't be helped.]

Actually, you know, I don't often go to parties in warehouses. You?

[ Honestly, Roy fits right into the Star Wars sequels vibe. Trying his best, ride or die, and thirsty for both friendship and approval.

Finn is glad to see his expression smooth out a little. Reads like a good thing to him. ]

Not before this week. Wanted to try something new. See if it was worth going out. [ And as it turns out, jumping around in the mosh pit was hype as hell and he's met some really cool people. Win-win. ]

[Maybe he picked the wrong universe to exist in because it seems like at least the Star Wars sequel crew don't seem to turn on each other as often. Either way, after what he'd just been through back home, he's feeling really cut off and alone, even if Jason is technically here.

There are some things that can be forgiven but not quite forgotten, after all.]

[Another little grin, and he leans in a bit.]

Finn keeps his eyes on Roy for a long second, considering. Maybe he's actually thinking about his answer instead of already knowing with full impulsive conviction what it is. Maybe he's trying to figure out if Roy is definitely flirting with him for sure through sheer willpower and observation. Maybe he's just enjoying the view and enjoying being in a nice uncomplicated good mood for a change. Regardless: ]

I think I'd like that. [ Finn pushes his chair back and gets to his feet. ] And this party sets a pretty low standard for quiet, so at least we're gonna have options.

[ finn there could be zero options and you'd probably offer to make out with him in the mosh pit at some point. that's what the kids call a messy disaster. ]

[It took Roy a really long time to work out that it was always worth going out. It had been a struggle when he'd been at the depths of his depression, to even bother getting out of bed, let alone going out. But in the end it had always been worth it, it had made him feel more human, like he had some connection.

Right now, though, he's way more interested in Finn looking at him like that, dark eyes on him and considering him, and there's something kind of validating about that. Roy can feel his ears heat up and he can only really hope that with the bright lights in the darkness and the red hair poking out from under the edge of his trucker cap, Finn can't tell.]

Oh yeah. For sure. You know, I think I saw some...you know, chill out crash rooms back there. With you know, couches and lounges and stuff.

[Vaguely, he gestures behind himself, toward the back end of the warehouse, eyes still on Finn's face.]

You in?

I'm in. Sounds like fun.

[ No room for aloof chill in the crash room zone. Not that anyone in the entire warehouse has been broadcasting chill anyway. But that's fine.

Finn never put any points into his play hard to get stat.

He takes hold of one of Roy's wrists, a loose grip that's easy to shake off by design, ostensibly for the sake of not getting separated while winding their way through rave central. It would be lying if I said it weren't also at least 10% impulsive "free physical contact real estate"-motivated. ]

You lead, I'll follow.

Great.

[He can't help the ridiculous little grin he gets on his face when Finn says it sounds like fun, chilling out in a lounge with him. Honestly, Roy's barely even given thought to whether or not they might make out, or if he wants to - at this point, he's just excited that someone wants to hang with him.

When Finn takes hold of his wrist, his grin widens just a little more, and he goes along with it easily, closing his fingers on Finn's sleeve, and stepping ahead of him, leading him back toward the crash rooms he'd seen on his way in. For now, there's no point in talking much more, not while the music is loud and they're dodging people in the crowd.

It's only when they get toward the back of the warehouse and a few doors start to appear, closed off with curtains or open with the insides of the rooms visible, that Roy turns to talk to his companion again.]

So uh...how long have you been around here? In Riverview I mean.

[ Successful party navigation is what it's all about. Finn follows, as established, finding Roy's grin is just as infectious as it was earlier.

He doesn't meet a lot of people that he's inclined to feel more at ease with right off the bat. It's usually a little stranger, more stiff and hesitant, when he meets someone new, tries to feel things out. Not to discount how much he cares about the people he knows; he went from thinking Taako was a jerk to knowing Taako is a jerk and still loving him, basically.

People are just hard sometimes. Because Finn is a dedicated overthinker. He doesn't look gift horses in the mouth when he doesn't start off feeling like he's always a step to the right of what people are supposed to do or say. ]

About four months. Give or take a few days. Feels like longer sometimes. [ Riverview: stuff's always popping. ] What about you?

[Roy's awkwardness is a little less about feeling like he's moving to the beat of his own drum (even if he really, really is most of the time) and more like never quite knowing what people think about him. After all, he's had a lot of experiences, especially lately, where he's thought people liked him, cared for him, were gonna stick with him, and then they just...didn't.

Not really all that hard to see why he's got a bit of an awkwardness issue, especially around people he actually likes. And he likes Finn, even though this is a first meeting, even though he's only hung out with him for less than an hour.

As they get to the quieter part of the warehouse, he starts nudging at the curtains to see if rooms are occupied or not each time he passes one, until he finds one that's empty. Pulling back the curtain, he raises a brow curiously and gestures inside.]

Wow. I just got here. Uh...this room look good? [A pause, and then-] Seems like this place gets pretty crazy, huh?

[ Finn gives the room a cursory looking-over, a little nod. It's got an edge on the competition just by being unoccupied. It's the little things. He's been trying to work on appreciating those for what they are. ]

Crazy's one word for it. Some of that's just-- luck. Or the way things go when you've got people from all over the universe. But it's not that bad.

[ He pulls up a seat on the couch, good posture and all. ]

I've met some of the best people I know in this city.

[When Finn gives him a nod, Roy slips inside, holding the curtain open behind him. The room is small, but there's space to lounge, on a large flat couch that dominates half the room, and there's a pitcher of water that looks like it's cool, the sides sweating a bit in the heat of the warehouse. Roy walks straight over and pours a glass for himself, then pours a second one and offers it to Finn while he plops down on the couch beside him.

No good posture here, sorry.]

Yeah, guess you've got a point. You get a bunch of people from different worlds and there's bound to be some weird traditions.

[Taking a sip from his glass, Roy smiles against the rim of it.]

Yeah? What're they like? I've...been hoping I could find some good people here. Think I might've started in on that tonight.

[Gently, he nudges Finn's shoulder with an elbow.]

[ He'll totally take a glass of water. Raving is no excuse not to hydrate.

The compliment is a critical hit, for the record. Most compliments are critical hits for Finn. He likes knowing he made a good first impression. ]

Everyone's different. I spend a lot of time arguing with some of them. So you know. Stubborn. A little crazy. [ Like attracts like. Such is life. Anyway, basically everyone he cares about personally hangs the moon 2k18. ] But they're good when they don't have to be. They try to help people. Can't ask for much more than that.

[There's something familiar and appealing about that, the way he says everyone's different, that hey argue, that they're stubborn, a little crazy. That sounds familiar, in all the best ways possible, and he's grinning before Finn's even finished his sentence.]

Sounds like a good crew. Reminds me of my adopted family back home, Jason and Princess Koriand'r. [A little headshake.] Kori.

[A soft exhale, and he looks up at Finn again.]

We were a bunch of misfits. I think I was the only one who really wanted to be called a team. But we were family. Good stuff.

[ Strangely enough, there's something familiar in what Roy says, too. If not necessarily in the best ways possible. But being the only one who seemed to want that connection.

It reminds Finn of how things felt back in the First Order, with his fire-team. Slip and Nines and Zeroes. Just wanting to belong, to not feel alone. Caring about what happened to them when he technically wasn't supposed to. Didn't really work out for him there. He felt more in place after five minutes of knowing Poe and Rey than he did after a lifetime of training and conditioning.

Sounds like Roy's team was a little more in the lines of Poe and Rey than with his fire-team, in the end. At least he hopes so. Everyone deserves that. ]

Yeah. Good stuff. [ You know what, he takes some of it back. Familiar feeling aside, there's charm in the sentiment behind it. The easy warmth, the fondness. That speaks to Roy's character, he thinks. ] Maybe you'll still find something like it while you're stuck here.

[It might be casual, almost a joke, but it's the crux of most of Roy's problems, that feeling like he's the only one who really wanted that connection. Who ever seems to want that kind of connection.

Kori and Jay, even if they hadn't wanted to admit it, though...they'd at least seemed to like the dynamic, to act like family even if they weren't calling it that. Roy'd been okay with that, even if it was settling, just a little.

He might not agree that he deserved basically anything, but it was nice to have, while it lasted.]

I hope so. I mean, Jason's here so that's a bonus, mostly, but...it'd be nice to find people I don't have a ton of baggage with.

[Leaning over, he nudges shoulders with Finn, mouth curved into a slightly crooked smile.]

You feel like adding another person to your crew?

[It's light, teasing, a bit of a joke, but there's a certain vulnerable, accidental seriousness to it too.]

[ Everyone likes feeling like they could belong. That's been Finn's feeling, at least. Less about a family he'll never meet, or a home planet he'll never remember. Less about jumping onto some higher cause. It's always been more about the people. Not feeling alone. He finds it reflected in just about anyone he's drawn to, that he likes, if in different ways from person to person.

Not being the only one who feels like that, reflects certain things, helps him feel genuinely alone a little less. He's spent plenty of his time here hoping that he returns the favor.

Finn nudges back, more a measured movement than a relaxed one. But his expression is sincere. ]

I'm pretty sure I've always got room for one more.

[ He's already known Roy for more than five minutes so that's pretty far along his baseline of good vibes for keeping a person. ]

[There's just something about this guy that draws Roy to him, a certain warmth and earnestness that makes him feel comfortable and like he's not the most awkward guy or the most emotional guy in the room. Roy knows he's a Lot sometimes, so it's nice to be around someone who seems to get that.

Nice to meet someone who so readily says he's always got room for another person. Roy's grinning, abruptly.]

Oh awesome, because, fancy that, I also always got room for more people.

[ Finn's always been pretty easy to win over, himself. Doesn't take long, doesn't take much.

He likes Roy. ]

Guess we're both up one, then.

[ And lo, with their size-ups looking agreeable, first impressions really good, and choices officially made to become attached to each other like the ride-or-die disasters they are: Roy and Finn proceeded to hang out with each other at the rave until one or both of them had to leave. They got in a lot of moshing time, and I like to think that to at least one random background character, they became urban mosh pit legends. It was rad. ]
