I don't think a warp drive would be of much use around here anyway. A probe would be pretty great, though. I've managed to find a few parts and materials out there beyond the wall, so who knows. Might come in handy.

[ He smiles a little at her request, nodding promptly. ]

Of course. Come on in.

[ With that he leads the way into the shuttle, stepping aside to let her come in and take a look on her own first. ]

[ She steps in and looks around, taking the measure of the place and looking for where improvements could be made, where the needs are. ]

She’s well cared for, I see.

[ He smiles a little at the remark, patting one of the walls lightly. ]

Of course. She's my baby.

[ Probably the closest he'll ever get to having a child, he thinks. And maybe he's just playing surrogates here, because he doesn't have the Enterprise around, but he's poured his heart and mind into this shuttle too. He can't help but care for her just as much after all the work he put into her. ]

[ She pauses in her survey, her hand on the back of a chair. ]

So, if you don't mind my asking—what's your story? Where were you before you came here?

A starbase, called Yorktown. My ship— me and my crew were waiting to be reassigned while we waited for our ship to be rebuilt.

[ Long story, which he doesn't get into right away. Hers is a broad question, so he's not entirely sure where to start. ]

I'm guessing you've never heard of Starfleet?

[ She shakes her head. ]

Poe Dameron and I are from the same universe. So anything he doesn't know—assume that I don't either.

Oh. [ He perks up and smiles at the mention of Poe. He's Jim's first officer here, so that should tell Amilyn all she needs to know about how well they get along. ]

Well then— Starfleet is a deep-space exploratory and diplomatic service maintained by the United Federation of Planets, or Federation for short. I'm a Starfleet Captain, and I was about halfway through a five-year mission when my ship crashed on a planet and was totalled. The only solution was to build a new one from scratch, but it's a big ship, and a big crew. It's the sort of thing that takes a while to be finished.

[ That reaction to Poe's name gets a smile. As for Starfleet, it's a very different model of space exploration that Amilyn is most familiar with, though she does remember her history readings about various planets that started out in similar ways, before the earliest formation of the Republic. ]

I'm sorry about your ship.

[ Said with no small amount of feeling; she remembers well the hurt she felt when she watched as the Ninka was destroyed. ]

I commanded a cruiser myself, before I came here. And then ... well. It's a longish story. You might know a little of it from Poe?

Thanks. But it's alright. Just one of those things you can't really avoid.

[ Seeing her go down had been an awful experience he wouldn't want to live through again, but on the other hand, Starfleet did start working on a new one fairly quickly. Jim's admittedly curious to see what she'll end up looking like, once she's finished. Of course he won't be able to see that while he's here, but anyway. ]
