If you happen to be taking a nice stroll by the river on Tuesday afternoon, you will be treated to the rather unusual (for most people anyway) sight of a woman flying. Said woman does not look very happy about this state of affairs: jaw clenched tight, she resolutely avoids looking down. Her arms and legs move almost like she's treading water, as she doesn't exactly know what the correct motions are for flying. Experimentally, she gives her arms a flap, but that only sends her higher into the air.

Okay, so not that. She closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, and tries to force her body down in an awkward sort of dive. All she succeeds in doing is somersaulting in mid-air with a rather undignified yelp. Panic is threatening to set in and she calls for help from anyone who is walking by, at least until a certain magical girlfriend can come to her rescue.

Good.

(Is it maybe bad that she's now thinking about kissing her in mid air, of what that would be like? She's never used her magic like that before.

Lucretia gives her head a little shake; focus.)

Do you think you'd know how to use any other magic? Maybe we should get you to try other spells of mine. Fly is a third level spell, after all. (Knowing how to do that out of the blue isn't nothing.)

(Maybe when she's more comfortable with this whole magic thing she'll be willing to try that out! But for now, she's focused on dealing with the problem at hand.)

I... don't know. I don't feel any different? Does magic feel like anything?

[scholiast]

(Yes, she's being very sensible. Lucretia's just excited by all the possibility here.)

Sometimes? I suppose when I need to use it I can feel it, but I don't feel it all the time. Sometimes it feels like I have electricity in my palms right before I cast. It's a good feeling though.

[dancingmd]

So I guess we won't know until we try it?

[scholiast]

Yes! I'll take you through some basics, see what we can find.

(For now though, they're almost to the ground, and Lucretia brings the both of them to a gentle halt. She lets go of Beverly's hands, and leaves her there as she completes her descent.)

Okay. It's– just think about the space you occupy, right now, and then shift that space downward.

[dancingmd]

Okay.

(She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath before she begins. This all seems so... imprecise. She'd actually feel a lot more comfortable if there was some sort of incantation, something to memorize and use every time like an equation. But she'll do what she can, imagining the ground below her moving closer, the space between shrinking. To help in this visualization, she moves her hands down, like she's pushing the air away.]

[scholiast]

(To be fair, Lucretia simply hasn't given her a very precise desciption but uh, that's magic for ya. Hard to explain. In her case, the movements are pure muscle memory; she's been casting for decades.)

That's– good job, Beverly. Keep going. (Apparently visualisation helps her. It's interesting to watch her puzzle her way through this, that's for sure.)

Nearly there.

[It takes longer than she'd like, but eventually, she feels her feet hit solid ground and as soon as she does, she opens her eyes again.]

It worked!

[Relief spilling over, she throws her arms around Lucretia's neck.]

Thank you, thank you! I never want to have to do that again!

[scholiast]

(She hugs Beverly loosely back, amused.)

You're welcome. I'm sorry you got stuck up there in the first place. Were you up there for quite a while?

[dancingmd]

Maybe ten minutes. Felt longer though.

[scholiast]

Yeah, that's fair.

(She leans back, reaches up to cup Beverly's face gently in her hands and give her a light, chaste kiss.) You know, I kind of like saving you.

[dancingmd]

Good thing, since you've had plenty of opportunity for it lately!

[scholiast]

Seriously. You should try to be a little more careful.

[dancingmd]

And deny you the chance to be my knight in shining armor? Never!

[scholiast]

(She smooches Beverly's cheek, pleased.)

You're such a considerate girlfriend.

[dancingmd]

I try.

[She flexes her hands experimentally.]

I don't understand how this happened.

[scholiast]

Neither.

(She looks at Beverly's hands curiously, but there's nothing different about them. Hmm...)

Copy this? (She makes the gesture for mage hand, a little flick of her thumb and ring finger. A spectral hand appears in front of her, a ghostly extension of her arm and wrist.)

[dancingmd]

(Beverly copies Lucretia's flick precisely - she always was good at imitating the movements of others - and while no ghostly appendage appears, there is a sort of... tingling in her fingers.)

I felt something!

[scholiast]

(No way.

Lucretia looks up at her, excited.)

What did you feel? Did it tingle?

[dancingmd]

(The excitement is catching, no doubt aided by the rush of adrenaline from her recent soaring experience, and she gives Lucretia a vigorous nod.)

Electrical, almost!

[scholiast]

You do know magic.

(Her mind is racing. Could Beverly have picked it up through her some how? That doesn't really make any sense though... it's not how magic like this works. You have to be taught, you have to learn.)

I haven't heard of anything like this happening before.

[dancingmd]

How does it normally work?

[scholiast]

It's a taught skill, it... isn't usually something that comes about naturally.

(But then, this situation– the fact that they're living on a moon, having come through a portal and all from different places and points in time– isn't at all natural. Maybe magic has a little more wiggle room here.

Something occurs to her then, so suddenly and so plainly that it seems ridiculous that she didn't think of it first.)

Did I tell you about what's been happening between Taako and I this week? That we've been feeling each other's emotions?

[dancingmd]

You did not. (Her brow furrows. The dots aren't quite connecting yet. And...) Are you... I can't imagine that's been easy for either of you.

[scholiast]

No, it hasn't.

(It's been shit, to be honest. Taako's been struggling and upset but he won't let her reach out to him; Lucretia's been caught up in her relationship and embarrassed to have her thoughts about that read. It's been a tough week.)

Um, but anyway– do you think this could be the same? An exchange of... energy, in a way? Rather than thought, or feeling?

(Maybe in any other circumstance this would be a big ol' reach but Lucretia's been here for nine months now, and she's starting to think that nothing is a coincidence any more.)
