Merry Christmas at the Lightwood-Bane-Whatever home. Starters in the comments.

Christmas Eve - Magnus
He made a pot of Magnus' favorite tea and made a tray of their favorite sweets along with a few savory snacks. They didn't talk about their life in Idaho much, but Alec missed the tea shop and reciting poetry to his husband. Taking the tray to the library, he sets it down on the table near the velvet couch. He arranges the vase of greenery, and red and white roses beside a wrapped present. When he's sure he has everything, he texts Magnus to meet him in the library.]
Baking in the Kitchen
To Alec: Handmade bow and quiver.
To Magnus: Hand carved music box with hidden drawers for small valuables. When opened this song plays once and then unlocks the hidden drawers.
To Izzy: A special chest. For weapons and jewelry.
To Rey: Hand carved Bo Staff. And a stuffed tiger.
To Clary: Artists workspace. There wasn't time to build something this elaborate so he dipped into his savings.
Jace can be found in the kitchen, baking mini-pies and cookies for dessert. The roast and potatoes are waiting to be put into the oven and there are a couple of fancy wines on the counter for everyone.

And if she also had any doubts about her showing up in Riverview, his Christmas gift kind of quietened those. She might have still been adjusting to playing happy families again, but at least he was alive here.
She came bearing a wrapped gift and handmade card which may or may not have featured one of the doodles of him baking. Of course it didn't nearly do the real thing justice. ]
So this isn't exactly on the same scale as your gift for me, but at least it comes from the heart.
[ Clary gave him a smile and held out the parcel. ]
no subject
You can be a Shadowhunter and an artist here.
[ He smiled then, soft and genuine. He was careful not to rip the paper too much and saved the card for after, but the moment he realized the book was not in fact a cookbook-as he had guessed the moment he felt the weight and shape of it-Jace gave Clary a look. ]
For this I will assault you with facts about birds at every opportunity. Give me back my gift. [ He demanded teasingly, setting the book on the counter so he could focus on the card. ] I'm glad you're here, Clary.
no subject
[ She was still getting her bearings and so far only employment and the fact that their Shadowhunter family was here had been covered with Alec. There hadn't really been much serious talk. Well, past the whole 'surprise, Jace is definitely from another moment'. ]
Not to mention the fact that I could use my stele if that's going to be the case.
[ She watched his face for the reaction, wondering if he'd make the connection to their first chat in the city. When he seemed to get it - even if he maybe didn't like it - she gave him a dazzling smile and offered up a shrug. She was not all shaken by his threat. ]
Fine, but you're going to have to come get it. I'm just a girl. I don't lift heavy objects. [ She arched her eyebrow slightly before she laughed. ] But I look forward to hearing all about the birds. I may have taken the liberty of covering up a certain bread with some extra artwork.
[ The smile faltered for the tiniest of moments before she gave a nod. ] It'll be nice to properly see everyone.
no subject
[She knows that they're dreaded words in this household, but she follows it up by holding her free hand up even as she playfully bumps him.] I promise I'll only help with things I'm asked to do and I won't try to go rogue on anything! Your delicious treats and food are safe, I swear! [Part of Izzy is still touched by the thoughtful chest that Jace got her, so of course she wants to spend time with him, thank him about a trillion times. She just hopes that he likes what he got, even though it doesn't feel quite as special and thoughtful.
She did try, though. She's more than happy to encourage his new hobbies. After all, she benefits from them.]
For Alec
And he was always absolutely sure of himself.
Most of the time.
But lately....this wasn't like before. He craved the occasional drink or two to unfocus his mind when his thoughts betrayed him, but he didn't want to drown his emotions in a bottle or three.
Maybe he shouldn't have used that song or put so much of his heart into the bow and quiver he held in his hands, waiting for Alec to take them. It was too late now.]
Merry Christmas, Alec.
[ He was just thankful no one had thought to hang mistletoe in the apartment. ]
no subject
Turning when he hears Jace, he grins at his parabatai.] Merry Christmas, Jace.
[Moving toward Jace, Alec gives the box a curious look before taking it from him and sitting down on the couch.]
I thought we were waiting until morning to exchange gifts.
no subject
You know me. Impatient and impulsive. I couldn't wait.
[ He should have waited. Giving Alec his gift surrounded by family would be a perfect disguise. But looking at him now he knew he couldn't wait. Even if it meant losing a little more of himself. ]
Open it.
no subject
Alec had done everything he could to make Jace feel loved, including exchanging gifts that his parents wouldn't have approved of with his best friend late on Christmas Eve.]
Or you wanted to bring back an old tradition?
[Maybe that's why Jace looks a little nervous. Trying to rebuild their relationship sometimes made them both jittery.]
Are you going to sit down while I open it?
no subject
Are you?
[ Maybe they both should sit he thought, taking a breath and glancing at the sofa before gently directing Alec over to it, one had on his arm and the other at his back. Just touching him made Jace's heart beat faster lately, but he couldn't not touch him. After nearly losing him Jace had promised himself he wouldn't do anything to hurt Alec again. That promise meant he wouldn't distance himself no matter how much his heart ached.
He loved Alec as he always had. Alec needed to know that hadn't changed. But he didn't need to know how that love had evolved so unexpectedly. ]
I waited long enough to give this to you.
no subject
Letting Jace move him to the sofa, he laughs softly at his parabatai's determination as he sits down. Juggling the box, he catches the waistband of Jace's pants, he pulls him down next to him.]
How long is 'long enough'?
no subject
A few weeks. [ He had needed time to do the research, find the materials, make a few mistakes in the process of learning. ] It's not perfect. But it's strong. I tested it myself.
[ Rubbing his hands together, he smiled at Alec. It made him happy to see Alec smile, to hear him laugh. ]
no subject
Slowly he begins working at the tape, not wanting to ruin the effort that Jace had put into the gift.]
It'll be perfect because you gave it to me. Just like all those silly things I gave you when we were kids.
no subject
[ Even as he says the words he knows knows he's failing keep the emotion behind them under control. ]
I may have acted like I didn't appreciate them as much as I should have, but I've loved everything you've given me. Not just gifts.
[ Friendship. A safe place. Understanding. Patience. Even tough love when he was being an idiot and a jerk. Alec had given him so much and in return he'd probably been the worst parabatai in history. Even Valentine had lectured him about the way he'd treated Alec. ]
So this...just open it.
[ Jace laced his fingers together and squeezed, nudging Alec with his elbow. ]
no subject
I gave you ratty books and almost as ratty clothes.
[Both had been silly gestures but it'd been the only think he could think of doing back then. There'd been bigger, grander, gestures and he knew his parabatai meant those as well but he isn't sure what to say about those.]
We've both given each other things that were important. Things we needed even when we didn't realize that we did.
[Friendship and acceptance. Seeing the potential no one else had until Magnus noticed him. There were so many times that it would have been easy to give up if he hadn't had Jace believing in him and needing him.
Looking over at Jace, he can't quite hide his amusement at how impatient his parabatai is before starting to rip off the paper. Pausing when he uncovers the box]
Are you sure you don't want me to wait until tomorrow?
no subject
[ And Jace had loved them all despite behaving more like a feral animal at the time. Alec never gave up on him no matter how horrible he'd behaved. ]
Still are sometimes. [ He teased, trying not to look guilty for having been such a jerk most of their lives.
And then Alec proved his point by refusing to simply open his present.]
I'm sure!
no subject
Pretending to glare at Jace, he makes sure to pause from opening the box just to annoy his parabatai. Once he made sure he's proven his point, he pulls the lid off the box, staring at what is inside.]
How did you find one so... [Even the bows in Idris or the ones the Iron Sisters made weren't as beautiful as Jace's gift.]
no subject
And then he would be distracted by the gift so maybe he wouldn't notice how deeply affectionate they sounded.
FINALLY!
Jace's heart felt like it stuttered in anticipation. Did he like it?]
It's not perfect. I made a few mistakes. Broke a few strings getting the tension just right.
no subject
Carefully pulling the bow out of the box, he holds it balanced between his hands, shocked at the beauty of the wood. The grain of it reminds him of some of the antiques he'd seen during his trip with Magnus. The bow itself could have easily been in a shop in Idris.
Occasionally I break a few strings. That doesn't mean it isn't perfect. It's stunning. I've never had a bow that was meant to be something beautiful.
no subject
It's strong, too. [ It reminded him of Alec in so many ways, but he couldn't explain what he meant without giving himself away. ] I didn't have time to make arrows.
no subject
[Even without testing it, Alec knows that it would hold up in most fights. Maybe not against Greater Demons or the kinds of beings Sebastian had called up, but it'd be perfect for regular missions.] You don't have to make arrows. I go through too many of them to have ones that match.

CHRISTMAS EVE
CHRISTMAS DAY
Christmas Day
His parents is part of a homesickness that's easier to ignore. He has the feeling Christmas would be awkward with the impending divorce and neither one of his parents happy about his boyfriend. Showing up for Christmas dinner married to Magnus would probably give them both heart attacks.
Anyway, they're happy here. At least he thinks they are. Jace he can figure out and of course he'd know if Magnus was becoming frustrated with their new life. Izzy... there's times when he can't quite read her the way he used to. But she seems happy watching them open presents and share the treats Jace had made.
Reaching for the bottle, he pours more wine for Izzy and small amount for himself. Much less than he normally would have pre-breakup.]
Merry Christmas, Iz.
no subject
She could almost compare them to your average mundane family.] Thanks. [Reaching for her glass, Iz nods, replying back both automatically and with warmth.] Merry Christmas, big brother. [She holds her glass up, studying Alec for the moment.] You happy with how it all turned out?
[Even without their little family being quite as complete as it was before.]
no subject
You're welcome. [After setting down the bottle, he picks up his glass and sits down beside her. Gently tugging on a curl, he smiles, watching the cat prowl beneath the tree.]
I am. I can't remember a holiday that was this quiet. [Or as quiet as possible with Jace's new hobbies, Magnus' magical decorations, and a cat who wanted to pounce those decorations.] Christmas wasn't bad at the Institute, but it never felt comfortable like this. Are you happy?
no subject
Me either, but it's nice. [Izzy looks directly at her brother, a smile on her mouth still.] I am happy! Sometimes it still seems crazy that all of this normalcy is real, and that it shouldn't be so easy to be comfortable and not have life disrupted by...everything, but I am happy. [Izzy reaches over, ruffling her brother's hair playfully as she speaks before letting herself lean his way, setting her head on his shoulder for a moment.] I like it here.
no subject
Why shouldn't it be easy, Iz? Mundanes live their whole lives like this. [It might be easy but Izzy's right and it does seem strange sometimes.] I assumed it felt crazy because I'm not supposed to have this. [Izzy will probably swat him for saying that but it's true. Alec had never thought he could be with someone he loved, let alone marry the person he loved.]
I like it too. [Hugging her with one arm, he smiles at how happy they could be without all the expectations that had been forced on them.] Things were getting better at the Institute, but here we can be whoever we want.
no subject
[It's a tease, but one that's followed by a sigh and then a shrug.] I think it feels crazy more because life was never this calm back home. There's always some kind of hell breaking lose, ahdn when there wasn't it was all about expectations of mom and dad, or the Clave...or whatever. [And yep, there goes that light swat against Alec's chest for what he's saying; as far as she's concerned he's supposed to have this - the family and the happiness - and her statement, the lack of this has nothing to do with his sexuality.]
It's just different here, and we get to meet a lot more people...experience a lot more than we did. [The smile that spreads on her face as she speaks about that is one she can't quite help. she doesn't regret coming here. OF all the things she's done, they've done, it's definitely not on the list. She still wishes Max could be here, though.]
I don't think any of us are that different from who we were, even though we can be whoever we want, you know.
no subject
You used to complain that it was dull. [At least Alec thinks she did. He remembers Izzy making comments about it while trying to wheedle Hodge into letting them go on missions...ones that he now knows they'd been too young for. The expectations, though, he doesn't really remember. Even before dating Magnus, he'd been the disappointment, the one his parents never thought would be good enough.] When they were around... and the Clave needs to quit acting like a pack of scared idiots.
We have. I like it. I never thought I would. [After years of seclusion, he'd never thought he'd learn to be social. He knows part of that is Magnus' understanding of his personality instead of seeing it as 'wrong' like most people did. Resting his cheek against her hair, he can barely believe that they can be safe and happy like this after everything that happened, it shouldn't be possible.
He makes a quiet, disbelieving sound at the idea that they're not different than how they'd been in the past.] Jace bakes and makes furniture. You're working with the police. I'm not hiding and hoping that no one notices me. That's not different to who we were before.
no subject
Something that they don't get to do very often, with their busy schedules and the fact that Alec is married and with plenty of people and things to distract him. Not that Izzy doesn't have the same, but still. Fewer obligations.]
Did I? [The tone of her voice conveys the fact that Izzy's playing dumb on that one. She's aware that there were times that she complained about how dull things were. In her defense, though, she was younger. Things have changed the older she's gotten, the more she's been through, and the more her perspective has had time to mature and just...expand from the almost sheltered, and yet highly pressurized, environment that they were raised in.
Rolling her eyes, though, Izzy shrugs, pointedly.] I wouldn't hold my breath on the Clave growing or changing any time soon, good thing we don't have to worry about that here.
There are still surprises left in the world. [She teases her brother - in reference to him never thinking he would like experiencing different things. He's definitely become more and more adventurous. He may have her beaten in a few areas, thanks to Magnus, but Izzy's always been adventurous and interested in experiencing all that she possibly can.
Turning, though, so that she can poke Alec in the side, Izzy grins at his argument.] No, it's not. [She holds up a manicured finger, wanting to make her point first.] Because these are choices we're making, things we're doing. Jace has the chance to explore and try these things, but he's still Jace. I'm working with the police, but I'm still me. And you...you're not hiding, youre just free to do what you want, be who you always were without any fear or reason to hold back. Growing as people...sure some of us are, but completely different, nah. We just have room to pursue different aspects of ourselves now and it's been good for all of us, from what I see.
no subject
[Jokes that he really doesn't mind because he knows how far in the closet he'd been before Magnus had saved him. Izzy's the main reason he can be himself with someone he loves. The thought causes him to give her a real, if awkward, hug.] You did. I hope you're not bored here. [She could be, though. She'd enjoyed missions almost as much as Jace had. None of them had really thought of having Mundane lives before. Usually they'd mocked those type of lives until Clary and Simon had shown them what Mundanes were really like.]
It's good that they're not since I broke the secrecy laws. [Along with a half dozen others but that would probably be the one they'd lecture him over.]
There are, but are you discovering them now that we're in a completely new reality. [His intent is to tease her but there is a hint of seriousness beneath the words. Alec has been worried about her since Simon's not here and she hasn't been acting how he remembers. But those memories might not be correct and she doesn't seem to know about their parents, so maybe this is normal for her and Alec doesn't have a frame of reference left to compare to.
Not sure if he should be afraid or surprised by Izzy's assessment, he considers it for a moment. Some of it feels right but some of it reminds him of the odd moments they'd had in Wayward Pines when things hadn't fit together the way they should have.] You two are still mostly the same. [Which isn't quite true. There's something different about Jace, but it's not something that Alec can ever put into words. He's not sure if they elude him because it's related to the parabatai bond, something that Izzy and Magnus don't have a frame of reference for, or because of something else.] Sometimes it feels like I became a completely different person. It's not bad, just strange sometimes.
no subject
[She teases withm a wink before accepting the hug, not exactly sure what it's for, but always willing to accept a show of affection from her brother.
Rolling her eyes playfully, though, Izzy scoffs at his statement.] Have you seen how many opportunities I have to shop? And the work I do with the police! I'm more than capable of filling my time, don't worry about me. [She reassures him, shrugging the concern off.
She liked things about home, but there were far too many things that were in need of change too. And nothing was changing rapidly enough. Here...things are better in some very apparent ways.]
You and me both! [Izzy's been careful about explaining things about being a shadowhunter, but she hasn't avoided the subject. No reason to. There isn't a Clave here to enforce any secrecy - they can speak freely about whatever it is they have the desire to and it's refreshing to just put everything out in the open - so maybe she sort of gets how Alec feels, in a completely different way.]
Here and there. [Izzy shrugs.] Even I still find things that surprise me. [She teases, sticking her tongue out at him, choosing to keep the conversation light.
She's not as settled as Alec. She's not finding it to be the respite and the huge change that Jace finds it. Of the family she is probably much closer in line with how Magnus is handling the situation, and even that is a loose connection. She puts herself out there, but she could stand to do it more, focus on her family less, but that's still going to take time. And is easier said than done.]
You still seem the same to me. You've always been a little weird, but you're still my brother.
[Izzy winks, a smirk on her face.]
