a stranger's bed

As a lead in to September, Riverview's ♥ Month of Romance, this is a completely optional mingle that will cause affected characters to end up in each other's beds. There are various options for both established and new CR. While it's easiest for characters still living in Communal Housing, anyone who has moved to their own homes can be affected and end up finding their way to Communal Housing, or within their own housing.

Residents of the Quarantine may notice that various businesses selling food and drink - cafés, diners, bakeries, restaurants, and other such establishments - are heavily advertising a new flavor that's supposed to be the biggest thing since pumpkin spice. A flavor additive that's said to subtly change the flavor of whatever the diner is eating or drinking to optimize the dish, drink, dessert, or any other food item it is added to for each person's individual taste, it's been selling like wildfire and is the latest trend.

After the cause of the rash of amnesia was revealed to be plant-related, sellers are keeping the origin of the secret ingredient very close to their chests, since it is a derivative of a recently-discovered plant dubbed chameleonis. Depending on the method of ingestion, this additive can have a variety of unexpected side effects, but only once the person who has ingested it becomes sleepy. Methods of ingestion include:

● Ingestion: Beverage: When ingested as a flavor shot to drinks ranging from sodas to coffee to alcoholic beverages, it can cause a desire for closeness to a particular other person. Affected characters end up crawling into bed with that specific other character when they become sleepy.

● Ingestion: Food: When ingested as a flavoring added to a baked good or other meal, it can cause an intense desire for body heat when the character becomes drowsy. It won't matter to an affected character who is providing the body heat, so long as it's someone, and they will end up sleepily crawling into someone else's bed for warmth.

● Inhalation: When inhaled ether from a steaming hot beverage or soup, or as an essential oil or aroma from a bakery, it can cause disorientation when a character becomes sleepy. Affected characters either aren't sure which bed is theirs and simply crawl into the closest one, occupied or not, or become convinced that another character's bed is their own.

Feel free to post up a top-level for your own character either affected and invading a random bed or unaffected but open to having their bed invaded by affected characters, or tag around to other people's top-levels.

[After a long shift at the hospital, Beverly wants nothing more than to curl up and go to sleep. She doesn't even stop by her regular coffee shop on the way home - though she can't help but notice the enticing aroma drifting out the front door. She stops for a moment and sniffs. Must be some sort of new spice. Pumpkin-chai-whatever. Leave it for the morning.

She doesn't even notice when she pushes the wrong button on the elevator or when she steps out into the wrong communal room - she barely knows her floormates anyway and besides, people are always moving in and out. All she knows is that finally, here is her bed, safe and warm and-

There's a man in her bed.

She lets out a surprised yelp and quickly scrambles back out of bed, dragging the covers with her, as if they will protect her from uh... whatever is going on right now.]

[jedies]

[ Obi-Wan for his part merely grins. Which is terrible, but this was a little funny. He hasn't had people climb into bed in a long time. Anakin used to do it when he was younger. He runs a hand through his hair, not making any sudden moves, waiting to see if she'll calm down. ]

I think you're on the wrong floor.

[dancingmd]

What- no...

[She looks around the room, searching for hints of familiarity and finding none.]

What...floor... is this?

[Poor woman, she is flushing deep red now. She hasn't done something this embarrassing in years.]

[jedies]

[ It's rather charming, but this is probably not the right time. ]

Floor Six, I believe. Are you all right?

[dancingmd]

Floor six!

[How could she have thought this was her floor? And... She's just wearing a tank top and undewear, having been to sleepy to put on her usual pajamas. Not that they would have been there anyway. She pulls the blanket around her tighter.]

I'm sorry..I uh... Maybe I should just go...

[Except she is feeling a bit dizzy and is wobbling a bit with that.]

[jedies]

[ His expression softens minutely as he rises from his bed, making his way to one of the chairs nearby with a flippant wave of his hand. ]

Of course not. Take the bed. I was having trouble sleeping anyway.

[dancingmd]

Oh! I can't possibly -

[And yet she's edging back towards the bed anyway, her body moving almost of its own volition. She's so confused and tired and she's not sure if she'd make it back to her own bed in this state.]

I don't even know your name!

[jedies]

[ Obi-Wan gracefully takes his seat, placing a leg on top of his knee. ]

It's Obi-Wan Kenobi. Please, go ahead.

[dancingmd]

[Gingerly she sits on the edge of the bed, still unsure about this whole situation.]

Beverly. [She can feel her cheeks getting hot again.] Beverly Crusher.

[jedies]

[ It's been some time since he's made anyone blush. Though, to be fair, these were unusual circumstances. Obi-Wan merely raises his eyebrows. ]

I would say it's a pleasure though I suspect you sort of came across my bed accidentally.

[ The Force pretty much confirms that. If there were secret or dubious intentions, he would have known them immediately. ]

[dancingmd]

[It's been a long time since anyone has made her blush. Granted, it's less him than the situation (though she has to admit he is a very nice looking man).]

Of course! I would never presume to... Especially not with a stranger!

[The last person to be in her bed was Odan and even that took quite a bit of negotiation.

She frowns thoughtfully.]

You're taking this... Better than I would expect.

[jedies]

I've been in unusual situations before. This one, while strange, doesn't rank high on the list.

[ Even for a Jedi, Obi-Wan's life has just been weird and he's gotten better at simply going with the flow. ]

[dancingmd]

Well, in any case, I am sorry.

[As weird as Beverly's own life has been, this particular situation hasn't cropped up. Finally, though, she offers the tiniest hint of a smile.]

I guess I'm a lot more tired than I thought I was.

[jedies]

It has been a rather hectic few days.

[ What with the fires and rebuilding. He's hardly going to fault anyone for merely stumbling into his room. ]

[dancingmd]

It has.

[She valiantly tries to suppress a yawn and tucks her legs up under the blankets.]

But I really should get back to my own bed...

[But this one is so comfy and more importantly it's here, not six more stories up.]

[jedies]

[ Obi-Wan merely raises an eyebrow. ]

Or you could just stay here.

[ He should meditate anyway. ]

[dancingmd]

Where will you sleep then?

[jedies]

I'm a light sleeper. It comes from fighting a war over the last few years.

[ He gestures vaguely. ]

I will take the time to meditate.

[dancingmd]

[Her expression softens with sympathy. A soldier, or someone like one anyway. She wonders if dreams ever keep him awake at night, like the Borg do for her every now and then.]

You're not going to let me get out of this, are you?

[Her smile is an embarrassed one.]

[jedies]

[ Obi-Wan shrugs. ]

I am dreadfully stubborn.

[dancingmd]

[That earns a small chuckle.]

Normally, so am I.

[She yawns again, this time not bothering to suppress it.]</ small>

But just this once I might give in.

[jedies]

It seems like a wise choice. I am a Jedi. You have nothing to fear from me.

[dancingmd]

Oh well then, a Jedi.

[She grins.]

You realize I have no idea what that means?

[jedies]

[ Obi-Wan blinks. ]

Ah, I forget that's the case here. A Jedi serves the Force.

[ He rubs his beard thoughtfully. ]

Akin to a monk, I suppose.

[dancingmd]

[Great. She's stealing a mink's bed. That makes her feel so much better.

Still, while she feels guilty, she's curious.]

Is the Force some sort of...diety then?
