The Apothecary's Halloween Haunt

For the entirety of October, The Apothecary bar has been and will continue to be decorated in deep shades of purple and orange, not to mention a whole lot of black and an array of convincingly grim yet decidedly elegant decorations. The real party doesn't start until the sun sets on Halloween night, stretching past the witching hours and through the following day in celebration of the lesser-known Samhain. From dusk of October 31st to dawn on November 2nd, the bar is alive with magic largely thanks to the menu of six alcoholic potions whose effects are posted on menus around the bar. These menus will be placed in clear sight with moving images of each drink so that guests are fully aware of their magical properties—if someone hands you a mystery drink, you're encouraged (but not obliged) to find out what it'll do to you before partaking. Each potion lasts an average of three hours, or until an antidote is drunk. And though multiple potions can be "stacked" by drinking them without an antidote in-between, party-goers will be cautioned that some potions may mix to create strange results. Luckily, the host will be attending from dusk to dawn in order to sort out any dangerous effects.

While the drink menu is the main event, there will be plenty of other ways to find some ghoulish entertainment. Tables are laden with a variety of both sweet and savory appetizers which all paying customers are welcome to enjoy. Because of the length of the party, the kitchen will be serving a limited menu of main-course items during typical mealtimes throughout the days. And because no party would be complete without music, there will be a "live" skeleton band performing jazz, rock, and the occasional but obligatory Halloween song upon request—please use this power wisely and save your fellow party-goers from two hours of continuous Witchy Woman.

Given that this is a Halloween party, costumes are highly recommended and will be rewarded with a free drink upon arrival. If you come without a costume, bartenders will recommend trying the Monster Mash or Werewolves of London potions in order to get you more into the spirit of Halloween. Though the bar will be dotted with large couches, plush armchairs, and piles of floor pillows, dozing guests will be encouraged to go home and sleep between festivities. If you're unable to handle over thirty-six hours of continuous partying, go enjoy a nap and then return to the bar for another round later on!

◇MONSTER MASH FLAVOR flat, warm; spiced rum, cranberry juice, grenadine EFFECTS Forget your costume at home? Don't worry, because drinking this potion while result in a full-body change into a classic Halloween creature, with a twist: it's either the sexy version, or the scary one. Though the drinker will be partially recognizable beneath it, the change can be a costume of its own. Some common transformations include but are not limited to: vampires, werewolves, zombies, witches, demons, and Frankenstein's monster	◇THRILLER FLAVOR flat, chilled; whiskey, bitters, sugar, orange zest EFFECTS If you're craving a change, this is the drink for you. The potion will bring about a random shift in the color of the drinker's hair, eyes, or both. Differences can range anywhere from natural shades to neon hues, as well as a variety of patterns and multi-colored or mismatched options. And don't worry, any facial hair you may have won't be left out of the fun!
◇TIME WARP FLAVOR flat, chilled; light rum, creme de menthe, lemon juice EFFECTS For those party-goers looking for a whole new perspective on Halloween, this drink offers two unique experiences. When sharing with another guest, knock the glasses together and drink simultaneously for a body swap. Feeling really adventerous? Get multiple people to join in on the fun! If you're drinking alone, you'll find that your biological sex will change from male to female, or vice versa.	◇WEREWOLVES OF LONDON FLAVOR sparkling, chilled; vodka, chambord, sparkling limeade EFFECTS Get ready to howl at the moon, or maybe fly off towards it, after trying this drink. Shortly after imbibing, partakers will manifest any number of animal traits, though all from the same animal. Perhaps it's as simple as a pair of bird's wings, or a full set of cat ears, tail, and eyes. The potion will pick up on any animal-like traits you may have, so snakes and rats beware.
◇I PUT A SPELL ON YOU FLAVOR flat, chilled; gin, vermouth, creme de cassis EFFECTS This potion is for anyone who's ever wanted to live out their dreams of being a teenaged wizard at boarding school. Though it may take a few tries to get perfect certain tricks, drinkers will be able to perform low-level spells with their hands such as: levitation, creating colored sparks, turning items invisible, elemental manipulation, summoning or conjouring items, short-distance teleporation, and a number of other simple tricks. (Any violent abuse of these abilities will result in immediate and forceful administration of an antidote and expulsion from the bar.)	◇HIGHWAY TO HELL FLAVOR flat, warm; absinthe, sugar, heatless fire EFFECTS Though this drink doesn't contain a potion, does it really need to when you're drinking something that's still on fire? This shot of absinthe, though adorned with a multicolored and edible flame, will warm you through and have you breathing the same cool fire for as long as it takes the sugar cube to dissolve on your tongue.

◇DON'T FEAR THE REAPER

These shots are free of alcohol and provide an antidote to every other drink on the menu. One splash of this delightfully chilled and refreshing drink will reserve all transformative effects as well as void all magical abilities. And though it is non-alcoholic, it does not provide any sobering qualities.

[Still more social than her. The most she's done has been to talk to him and make some eye contact here and there.]

I guess she had great fashion sense? [Because fashion wasn't something that was fret over on Jakku. But yes, she saw him with a woman like that, a blonde, and someone else.] Yes, saw you with them, but also greeting others. Acting like a host. [Which, he kind of was, but more out going than her at any rate.

And he sort of had her stumped there, but only for a moment.] I don't think I'm much fun. Unless it's building something. [But was that really fun when she did it more out of necessity than for her own enjoyment?]

The outfit was very sparkly? [Alec's fashion sense is limited as well but he knows better than to say anything that might cause his sister to pout. Or elbow him somewhere sensitive to get back at him for not noticing how amazing her outfit is.] They're my family. My sister's in the beaded dress. My brother's the blond and the cat is Magnus. I had to force myself to larn how to interact with people. A few months ago, I would have been trying to sneak out or hiding in a dark corner.

[One of the many changes caused because he'd met Magnus and learned to accept himself.]

I think you are. I've never met anyone that built things. Most of my kin is only taught how to fight. We don't learn skills.

[Rey knits her eyebrows together and looks at Alec in confusion. So the outfit was great was it was sparkly? Well, she supposed that could make it great, but she wasn't paying too much attention to the outfit. regardless, she listened to him list that those people were his family. Of course he would feel comfortable talking to him.

So, he knew what sort of position Rey was in.]

It's not that I don't know how to interact...[It's just a bit awkward for her. Besides, she's better with a smaller group of people.] I just have a lot on my mind, that's all.

[Yes, that seems like a good reason to stand by the wall.]

I had to learn to build things, or fix them at least. Part of my job growing up. [And learning how to fight...she did that too.] By fighting, do you mean with a weapon or without?

You have a lot on your mind and you're not used to gatherings like this? [It's a guess mostly, based on his own experience. He'd been terrible at social situations, constantly worrying while his siblings had fun.] You know Jace and Izzy would like to meet you. Magnus too. [That's a given since Magnus is always curious about anyone Alec actually talks to and who might be impressed with his magic.

The idea of a child having a job doesn't surprise him like it probably would most Mundanes. Training, in its own way, had been their jobs growing up.] It's still a special skill. One most of my kin don't have.

We learn both. Jace prefers blades. Izzy has a whip. I'm strongest with a bow and staff. Our training starts when we're ten. Younger for some of us.

[There was a nod of her head. She wasn't used to gatherings where she knew maybe one or two people? Or a gathering that was this loud and filled with people. Either way, she's fine with being in the shadows, maybe exploring the different treats the place had to offer--but no alcohol.

She blinked a little hearing that his sister and brother wanted to meet her. Rey nearly asks why, but the question is withheld.] I wouldn't mind meeting them....

[Assuming they weren't busy doing anything else. Or, was she over thinking things?] But I mean with Magnus, I don't want to bother the host. [Okay, she really was over thinking things.]

You never did say what your 'kin' were. Tribe? Or a specific group of people? [She was about to say species, but she's assuming he's humanoid. Or a version of it...]

Good. [It seems like a strange reversal of his family's usual roles. Alec's never been the one to bring to meet them, usually accepting whoever the others brought into the group, but rarely ever having them met someone. He has the feeling that they all need to the introduction so that they'll focus more on the outside world.] I promise that I'll keep Jace in line if he gets to be too much.

Being the host means that Magnus greets everyone, especially his husband's friends. He likes being social. [More than Alec ever will, but he's learning to enjoy it.]

My kin are a group of warriors. All of us who have the black marks like mine swore a holy vow to protect the world from evil. [It's a simpler version of what he'd told Cisco, but he isn't sure if Rey's ready for discussions of demons when she seems nervous about meeting all of them. Thinking they're crazy would ruin the introductions.]

What? He bites or something? [She didn't know much about Alec and his family, aside from them being close. She wasn't sure what to expect, and it wouldn't be bad meeting them. Alec was nice, and she assumed they would be the same. If she was met with sarcasm well, she could throw it right back.

A soft chuckle leaves her, finally starting to feel at ease in this party scene. It wouldn't be too bad to meet him. She did want to see magic up close. Something that couldn't be explained with slight of hand or anything else--Alec's wings aside.] If you insist, then how can I say no?

[A group of warriors who protect the world from evil...it's nothing she isn't too familiar with, minus the black marks part.] So are the marks...from battle? Because they look more like designs. [Granted, she's only seen the one on Alec's neck and that was it.]

[Alec tries not to laugh, but considering some of the crazy things his parabatai has done in the past, it really wouldn't surprise him if Jace tried it just to shock someone.] No, but he can be a little bit over-the-top. Usually if you snark at him, he'll calm down. He likes people snarking or being sarcastic even if he doesn't admit it.

[He thinks that's why Jace is so fond of Simon even if he'd never admit it. Simon didn't back down, snarking at Jace constantly, and he seemed to enjoy the game or whatever it'd been between them.]

Good. He hasn't really had a chance to show off until this week. I think he's missed it even if he'd deny it.

They are designs. They're part of our vows. We receive them as we train. [It's partially true. He hopes it's enough to satisfy Rey's curiosity since he doesn't want too many people knowing about what Nephilim can do or for someone to experiment with the 'patterns' Shadowhunters were 'tattooed' with.]

[Now Rey couldn't help but smile a little at that. So Jace was over-the-top and preferred snark. Okay, at least she knew how to handle that.] As long as he doesn't bite, I'm sure we'll be okay. [And if he tried, he might get a swift bop to the head...or side.]

You mean this.. [She gestured to the party, the magic infused drinks and everything around them.] Isn't showing off? [Because it certainly looked like it. Unless he was planning on summoning something to make it more over the top. Or...something else. Rey didn't know, but how was Magnus going to show off more? What else could be done to make this more over the top?]

Oh..[Well, that's interesting. So they receive this marks as they progressed through their training. Briefly, she wondered if the Jedi had a tradition like this. A question she would never get to Obi-Wan, or Luke. She pushed the thought away from her mind. No need to go back into that mood.] I don't think there's anything like that from my world, well planet.

He'll say he'll bite while flirting with you, but you can ignore it. [Although Jace hadn't really been like that since they'd arrived here. He probably would still tease her but he might not fall back on the 'pretty boy' routine that he used before.] Or threaten to bite back. His reaction to either tactic can be amusing.

[Jace is probably going to kick his ass for this, while laughing throughout their sparring, but if he could drag Mundies into the Institute, then Alec can warn his friends about his parabatai's antics.]

This is - [Alec's voice trails off as he takes in the 'band' and the rest of the decorations.] A different kind of showing off. Casting spells for the enjoyment of it and for others to appreciate is rare. Most people pay for his spells and never think of what went into them.

[He has the feeling that Rey would appreciate Magnus' magic and the effort that goes into it. It's one of the reasons that he wanted the two of them to meet. Rey should see 'real magic' and Magnus should meet someone who wasn't a Lightwood who would value his talent.]

I don't know if there's anything like it in other worlds. So far we haven't met anyone with similar backgrounds. Is fixing things a tradition for your family?

Flirting? Why would he do that? [Rey couldn't help but simply stare at Alec in confusion. He couldn't mean flirting with her, could he? Why would Jace flirt with her? Just to get under her skin....odd. Very odd.] I would be surprised if he actually tried to bite me. [And get a good knock on his head for it. But, who knew? It was hard to say considering she hadn't met him, and the way Alec was describing him didn't help matters too much.

But..at least she was open to the idea of meeting his family.]

Still...it's showing off, and it's very impressive. [Considering the scale of everything, but she supposed nothing could compare to seeing actual magic. Not a conartist, but a real life magic user.] I haven't really thought about what I'd give him in return though...[Because if memory serves, she was supposed to offer something in exchange, but maybe she could repay him later for it? Assuming again, Magnus wasn't busy.

As far as traditions go...Rey shakes her head.] No, it was--is my job, in a way. On my planet I was a scavenger. [And she still was, considering she was an assistant to Cisco and looking for parts and such in what laid beyond the wall. And...considering how many people saw her memories, she was surprised Alec didn't see one of hers.] I haven't seen my family in years.

Because Jace flirts with everyone. Or he used to. He seems to be trying new ways of making friends. He may try to feed you a couple dozen cupcakes instead. [That might be more likely than the flirting with Jace's new baking obsession. If his parabatai kept trying out recipes in volume, they may need to open a bakery so they can have space for other food in the pantry.] If he did try to bite, it'd be to see how you'd react. Like brothers provoking their sisters.

I'll make sure to tell Magnus that, but you should tell him too. He doesn't get enough compliments. In our world, few people really get to see his magic. [Even though Magnus isn't really expecting any kind of trade for his spells, Alec's pleased that she values them that much.] He'll probably trade stories for magic.

A scavenger? [He can't quite think of a context where that's a job, unless it's related to fixing things. His expression turns serious when Rey mentions her family.] I'm sorry. Maybe they'll show up here.

[The confusion on Rey's face didn't faded away with the explanation. So his brother flirts with everyone, but may also try to feed her sweets. That only brought about more questions and she didn't think Alec would want to spend time answering each one. At least he was taking her mind off of things, of losing Obi Wan and starting at square one again.] He doesn't seem to have many hobbies if he's interested in provoking or flirting with people. [Or maybe it was one in the same. Either way, if he tried to bite her, she would bite back--hard.]

[There was a slight nod of her head, recalling that back in Alec's word Magnus couldn't be himself. That people with magic usually hide, which she could understand. But, if he wanted to trade things like stories for magic...Rey might able to do that. She could explain more of her world and go into those details rather than share her memories. She had done a lot with that.] I wouldn't mind that arrangement. Fine, let's go see him. [Alec convinced her enough as is, so instead of delaying it, they could find his family and she could meet them. Aside from possibly bantering/flirting/being provoked by Jace, it sounded like fun.

Rey didn't know how to answer Alec without coming across as dismissive or revealing too much of her past. She looked down for a moment, gathering the right words.] I wouldn't want them to be here, they're needed elsewhere. [Her friends were her family and they needed to help out with the Resistance, to keep the First Order from fulfilling their plans...]

We aren't really encouraged to have hobbies. [Alec knows how strange that sounds and how it offends most Mundanes. Since Rey's had a life hadn't been what most beings would consider 'normal' he assumes that she won't freak out over it. She might be offended, but he doesn't think it'll be a reason for her to avoid any of them.] We train. We fight. That's all we know.

I don't think Magnus will mind it either. It's rare for him to find things he hasn't seen or heard before. [From what he's seen and what Magnus has told him, immortality wears down most experiences until there's rarely any 'firsts' left.] I doubt that he's met someone from another planet.

[Nodding thoughtfully, he can understand why she wouldn't want her friends to be here. It might be safe, but sometimes you had to let the people you care about be in danger. He starts to lead her to where Magnus is charming everyone at the bar.] And they'd probably want you to be here, if they knew.
