[The truth is, Eddie's not really given to false modesty, but he's certainly in the habit of not noticing some of his own positive traits. It's simply a matter of being constantly reminded for more than half of his life of his own weaknesses, before he stamped most of them out, and how that makes it harder to remember his good points than his bad ones. Makes it easier to fixate on what he does rather than who he is as positives.

But that's not really the point of the conversation, and he's too engrossed in what Steve is saying to really put much thought into that.]


I get that. Sometimes we get good at what we do because we love it. Sometimes we're good at something we don't particularly enjoy. For me, being a Detective...it's what I've wanted since I was a kid. I only got promoted recently, back home, but I worked damn hard to get there, and I was even thinking of going FBI eventually. That was before I met someone and settled down a bit, you know?

[A little smile, as he looks at Steve's face, trying to read his expression.]
