All things considered, Roy felt he had been navigating a complicated device that he couldn't distinguish from incredibly complex magic with reasonable aplomb -- but when they'd told him to just forward the files on, that was where he got completely lost.

"I've been trying to treat it simply like a magical device for communication," he said, trying his best to keep his patience with himself, "but I've realized that devices like these are far more -- versatile?" Was that the word he wanted? "Than magical items, which are made for a given purpose and have no flex or leeway outside of that purpose. The options are somewhat overwhelming."

He sat on the truck tailgate next to her, dropping the rear an inch or two in the process. Especially with his armor, Roy was not a light man.
"The rest of it, though -- I've been hesitant to do anything without understanding what, exactly, I'm doing. I don't expect it will actually unleash fire or necromancy, but I don't want to accidentally scry on something I shouldn't, for example."

It doesn't take her long to find said files, and when she does, she shows him the screen so he can see what she's doing. "See here? This is what you wanted to send to us, right?" She goes through the motions of forwarding the files to her own username, moving slowly, talking him through each step as she does it. "...and then you hit send, and... off it goes." Her own device pings, and she pulls it out of her belt to show him that it's notifying her of a new message.

Despite the sword and armor and general physical bulk, Roy was not an unintelligent man. Far from it, in fact; his difficulty grasping the concepts involved was just as he related it. Spells did specific things for specific causes. Enchanted items had limitations. Magic was exclusive, whereas this technology was inclusive.
"I can do that again in the future. But I have to admit, I don't understand the principle behind any of this at all."

Even for those who are intelligent in other areas, it's a complicated field. It's not judgement on her part, just an understanding of how a mind has to be able to think in order to truly understand what makes smart phones and tablets work the way they do, and that's in a world where magic doesn't come into play. "I can teach you how to use all of the features without also teaching you what makes them work, but that might also take more time than we have right now. You'd be amazed what these things are capable of."
