sampremi celebration

In the days leading up to March 8th, new residents may notice advertising around the city, everywhere from digital screens to paper flyers pasted on blank walls, featuring the name of the spring holiday in celebration of new beginnings, new love, and lust: Sampremi. The advertising mentions that there will be street festivals set up at various locations throughout the week and lists where the market will be set up on each day.

street market

The main draw of the holiday is a roaming street market that features special treats and street food that can only be found during Sampremi, a bustling bargain market with any kind of goods you can think of, and fair games that allow a person to win a prize for that special someone.

i. street food

One of the major draws of the festival is the special street food that can only be obtained this time of year. Almost everything you can buy at the Sampremi Festival is meant to be shared - whether it's one piece of meat on two sticks or desserts baked with a narrow part in the middle for convenient tearing, everything is built in twos. The stalls sell everything from cups of soup, sandwiches, roasted or fried meat, deep-fried vegetables and cakes, dumplings, donuts, bagels, turnovers, and anything else you can think of.

Many of the savory dishes are based on the meat of a particular fowl native to the moon Riverview is situated on that has a taste and texture halfway between chicken and duck, cooked to be spicy (ranging from very mild to throat-burning). Many of the desserts are based around a fruit native to the moon that is spherical, red-orange, and has a light sweet taste that is similar to a combination of mango, pineapple, and strawberry. Both ingredients are considered to be aphrodisiacs. Of course, the foods aren't actually aphrodisiacs and any effect is purely placebo.

ii. fair games

The festival features an entire row of fair games ranging from very high-tech games featuring virtual reality and neon holograms to extremely old-fashioned games with darts and balloons or balls and glasses. The games all have prizes in various shapes and sizes, with the standard stuffed animals, but also with goods and special items donated by any business in the city; ranging from tiny prizes to huge and expensive ones.

Due to the nature of the holiday, many of the stalls are set up to cater to winning a prize for your partner, and due to the nature of the Quarantine, a lot of them involve aiming or other aspects of pretending to fight.

iii. shopping

Originally, the part of the street festival that involved an actual market, with stalls and booths set up with goods, was aimed primarily at romantic trinkets like flowers or jewelry, gifts intended to be purchased for a loved one. As time has gone by, however, this aspect of the market has increased, with many businesses participating, though the emphasis is still on small businesses and anything relating to local culture rather than booths for any of the larger more corporate businesses.

There is still plenty of jewelry to be found, for sure, mostly handmade and artisan, but the scope of the Market has widened immeasurably. The Sampremi Market is an excellent place to find specialty foods, clothing, jewelry, art, or other goods that were originally native to cultures on other planets in this reality, or other realities altogether. Many residents in the city use the market to share their unique cultural goods and traditional dress with others.

iv. adult

In a side alley of the Sampremi Market on any day, one can find an area roped off with a red silken cord, attended by members of the Perimeter Guard in casual dress who will ID anyone entering to make sure they are 18+. Once characters are permitted entry, they will find all of the adult offerings that the market has to offer.

Since Sampremi is, historically, a celebration of lust and physical love, the adult offerings are all set up to cater to two or more people of any sex or gender configuration. One can find an adult or sexualized version of almost anything that's featured in the main market, from fair games to adult goods to street food laced with actual aphrodisiacs (there are always warnings for food spiked in this way to avoid accidental consumption).

v. roommates or wildcard

Feel free to use this prompt to set up headers for a communal floor, or threads open to roommates for the purpose of getting to know each other. Or if you have an idea for a prompt that isn't in this list, set at the Sampremi Festival, feel free to write it up!

[Holsters of any sort barely even ping on her radar as anything out of the ordinary. Honestly, she's more weirded out by people who aren't visibly armed.

For now she just heaves a long-suffering sigh and reaches out to straighten up one of those teddy bear duos that had slumped to the side. Probably from all the excessive pawing of the passer-bys. It's so weird to her that people touch things before they buy them.]

What, you mean and not inconvenience us horribly and against our will? Come on, get real. Like they even care.

[She'd resolved to treat this whole thing like a vacation, but-- you know, the longer she's here the more antsy she gets. She never thought she'd be able to say she actually misses near-death experiences on the daily, but. Better that than to be around all these people who've never encountered danger in their lives. How do you even relate to that? She doesn't begrudge them the life, but it sure is weird being around it.]

I'm Ellie. By the way.

[Her sigh is a bit over-dramatic, but not really in a way that catches any real notice. In fact the opposite is true, subconsciously he feels more open to bouncing back the complaining or what you want to call it. But since they both seem to share grievances, why not go along with it?]

That's true. Maybe they did this on purpose. It kinda feels like we're their experiments. [And that's not something he's happy about. No how, no way. He gets they were told to work or something for the right to go home and he's going to do that and/or go to school, probably, when he's sure of things more... but that isn't going to happen right now. He misses home even with all its serious flaws and scary parts as well.]

Carl. [The exchange of names isn't hard, but on the inside it catches him by surprise how seamless it was to get to it. Normally warming up to other kids took time, though maybe it hard something to do with how she got it, he thought.] Uh, nice to meet you?

Yeah. You too.

[Maybe a normal person would do a handshake here, but people don't really touch all that much anymore in her world. There's always that fear, that someone will have the Infection, that they'll transmit you some weird new form of it. Handshakes and the like have fallen almost entirely out of fashion, it doesn't even occur to her. She just gives him a nod and puts her hands on her hips.]

So... what happened to your gun? Somebody steal it?

[Do they need to hunt someone down because she is more than ready to do that. She can only assume that someone about her age, wandering around with an empty holster is some sort of kindred spirit.]

[personal profile] carltoaction 2017-03-13 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Right. [Works well enough for him. Meeting people and exchanging names is about the normal as it's every going to get now. Handshaking is all too touchy feely for him, when it isn't someone he's family with. He nods back in response to hers ... before his gaze turns down to his holster to figure out what she's talking about.]

Huh... oh yeah, sort of. It was taken before I even got here.

[No need to go on a mission to get it back. He has a feeling he won't be on the mission to retrieve it until after he buys his way home. But her asking sort of confirms his earlier suspicion that what she had on her person was a gun.]

[personal profile] pundemic 2017-03-13 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you need another one? I think there's an armoury somewhere in town.

[For her part, she'd be going absolutely crazy if she was defenseless, so. She can rationalize that this guy's in the same boat.]

-- Sorry, I'm not trying to be all 'gun-ho' [that is definitely a pun] or anything on you. I just-- I've been there, you know?
carltoaction: (Default)

[personal profile] carltoaction 2017-03-14 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Wait. It's not that easy is it? [He feels himself blink in surprise but it probably looks no more like closing his eye for a split second to anyone else. Though he didn't think they just gave guns away for free or to "kids". This place was supposed to be like civilization was like before and all that.

He shakes his head at her apology though.]

No. Uh, [she just punned him and he stares a second before his expression cracks with an uncertain amount of amusement] it's okay. It is weird not having anything on me... But what do you mean you've been there though? [Of course the boy is curious. Suddenly talking about guns with someone in this place like it was normal and nothing to get in trouble for was every bit twisted and strange and then at the same time not. He has no idea what to make of it yet.]

[personal profile] pundemic 2017-03-16 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea. Might be. I mean... no harm in asking, right?

[And if not, well. It's not like theft is out of the realm of possibility. Maybe once upon a time she'd have felt bad, but there are monsters here, and people who know how to use a gun and aren't totally crazy? They should probably have one.

-- Though she doesn't really have a way of knowing that this kid isn't totally crazy. But she tends to trust her instincts when it comes to other kids, and -- well, this one seems all right to her so far. She doesn't want to look too closely at the fact that she's just missing the connection of being around people her own age. Say what you want about military prep, but at least she had friends.

Sort of. And Riley.]

And oh-- um. Only so many reasons somebody our age carries a gun, you know? Unless you're a psycho.

[This is all said very casually. Tact is not a thing she has in any especial amount.]

Probably not. But I don't know if I want to be the one ask if they are gonna do something about it.

[Because, you know, they're still viewed as kids and in a normal society adults get all weird about them having guns. He wonders if this place has child protective services or something along those lines of what could happen and knows he doesn't want to cause that kind of trouble for himself or his dad. He could just try to be normal for once, maybe. But just thinking that causes him sigh to himself, knowing that wouldn't be something he could really do.

And she doesn't strike him as crazy either. He can't exactly know for sure, but from what he can see and feel from his intuition she's not lying about what she's implying nor is she acting like she is anything otherwise. He'd only be concerned if she weren't hiding her gun and were treating it like a game.]

Yeah, I know. [he pauses for a second, a little caught off guard with to what to say to her lack of tact.] And I don't think I'm a psycho. Even if I had a gun, I won't shoot anyone unless I gotta.

[personal profile] pundemic 2017-03-20 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No problem. I'll ask for you.

[It isn't like anyone could actually take her weapons away. She doesn't like to think about the fact she'd kill anyone that tried, but it's not far from the truth, either. And then if they say no to her, well. Then they can resort to something a little less orthodox.

Not quite like stealing waterguns from a locked office, but close. You really can't defend yourself with anything made by Nerf.

Ellie glances around them, something ingrained and habitual. She's rarely actually still, preferring to make casual notation of everything that's in their immediate vicinity, stepping to put her back to a festive booth of some kind.]

Well, there you go. I like to think that's most people, but-- [a slight shrug. She knows damn well it isn't.] So what happened? You're from Earth, right?
carltoaction: (pic#10323283)

[personal profile] carltoaction 2017-03-23 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have to. [Because he doesn't want to be responsible for her getting in trouble or anything either.] I'll just ask my dad or something. They made him a cop here.

[Bringing up dad like that way seems a little insensitive when he doesn't know if she has anyone around so he's fine with the subject changing and glancing around at their surroundings.

His back rests against the same booth after a moment to stare at the irony of a painting of cowboy holding a gun staring back at him on the booth wall. He bobs his head and turns it to face her.]
Yeah. It's not. [Even sometimes he felt like a monster, but then they were real monsters out there. Ones that truly could be described as psycho.]

Yeah... People got infected where I'm from. They died but turned into something else... Walkers. That's what we call them.

[It feels weird explaining what happened when just yesterday everybody he knew or met would have known.]

[His dad's here. It's so weird to think of people in the context of families, or parents that the statement actually shocks her into a moment's silence. It's not the sort of, oh shit, he has something I don't silence of envy or resentment, it's just-- family, you know? It's something she could never take for granted, and she smiles a bit on his behalf. She's glad for him.

But she's also going to appreciate the change in subject, and she nods along as he talks.

Funny how this is maybe the most normal conversation she's had while she's been here. 'Infected'.]

Let me guess. They lose their minds and try to eat other people?

[ooc; sorry for the delay. we can handwave the rest if you'd like, i'm not fussy.]
