how to win friends and influence NEETs [CLOSED]
who: Ichimatsu Matsuno and Aoba Seragaki
what: Aoba runs into a familiar face with an unfamiliar demeanor. In other words, he runs into Ichimatsu.
when: Sometime in September...
where: Petting zoo!
warnings: None anticipated, will update in subject lines if necessary!
[ It's getting cooler, day by day.
Foliage is already beginning to change color. At least those that Aoba can recognize. One such plant he didn't recognize had started transforming from a gold color to a vibrant green in patches. He supposes it's native to this world or brought in from another. Whatever the cause, the seasons were changing again and he's happy to throw on more layers compared to the sticky, sultry heat of summer.
He has some time off work and little else to do with his day, and craving the comfort he had with Ren, Aoba decides to get his fix from the petting zoo. There are all manner of animals foreign and familiar that he can touch, hoping to distance himself from missing his Allmate. It never really does the trick, but it serves as a wonderfully cute distraction.
After purchasing a ticket, he moves alone through the light crowd of people in pairs or small groups. Picking his way through the exhibits to listen to explanations of the origins of a particular species or to watch their young be fed via bottle or by hand.
It's then that he sees a familiar face and heads towards it. It occurs to him that this might... be Osomatsu? Surely not Karamatsu, given the lack of obvious cosmetic use. ]
Um... excuse me? [ Don't mind the light tug on your sleeve, Ichimatsu. Or mind, and he'll have to explain himself. ]

Neat? I don't get it.
[ He's never heard of this term before, not once. But there's something else that he can't come to grips with either, and that part makes him unfold his arms and lean forward in alarm. Just what level of thirsty makes someone go through that much effort just to score a date?! ]
Heeh? Wouldn't it have been easier to just simply ask someone out on a date?
no subject
Nono-- NEET. It's an acronym. [He brings up both hands, counting off on a finger with each point.] No Education, Employment, or Training.
[He recoils when Aoba leans forward, hunching his shoulders and taking a very specific step backward.]
Probably, but I didn't participate in their scheme so I don't know what was going through their heads.
no subject
Aa, NEET. [ He gets it now! ]
...Wait, you -- None of you have any of those things?
That's crazy! How do you not have anything like this? I grew up in a slum and even I had education, training... a job!
Granted, I didn't most of mine for long but this last one I was doing well in! Junkshop Mediocrity!
[ That name sounds really disappointing, though... ]
no subject
We just don't. And really, "Junkshop Mediocrity" doesn't sound like something to be proud of.
God I hate finding typos after the fact lmao
At least it was something. And I had a really good boss. [ He supposes he won't see them again, and that makes him a little sad but he's more annoyed that a NEET is judging his career choices! But then Aoba realizes something. ]
...Hey, so can you even call yourself a NEET anymore?
no subject
W-well, maybe not, but we were. You asked about how desperate they were for a date, not my job status.
no subject
You said you were NEETs. You don't do anything, right?
But you're working like a normal person. [ That's a bit of a stretch, also, this is the most pointless thing to get into a disagreement over. But there Aoba is, looking with a distantly challenging stare that is a bit too slow to realizing that. He lowers his hand. ]
...Sorry, what I mean is - good job... you know, not being a NEET. And not going along with that crazy idea.
There's some weird guys around that might mess with them. Like that guy who tried to get Karamatsu to be a guinea pig for some drug.
no subject
[One of his eyes twitches almost closed and he snarls slightly, hunching his shoulders farther and making an exaggerated gag of a gesture.]
Fuck that guy. He's a pointless self-important shitheel.
no subject
Ah, he'll let that go. This is probably old hat for anyone who deals with Karamatsu on a daily basis.
Aoba blinks. That phrasing... the way he said that suggests he knows who he's talking about. It's not that surprising, seeing as the creeper had set his brother in their sights, but Aoba didn't know anything else. This sounds like a lead. ]
You know who that guy is?
no subject
Pretty good idea, but no solid undeniable proof. About as secure as the fucking drug he was trying to sell.
no subject
[ Aoba deflates a little. That's too bad, but when he sees that expression on Ichimatsu's face, he grows a little more animated himself. ]
Right? That gave me the creeps too! I haven't seen much of that Lampyr stuff since, so I'm not sure if he's rebranded it or if it didn't really take off like he wanted it to.
[ He sighs. ] I just hope it's nothing like those conspiracy theories some people have been tossing around, like the government here is just experimenting on us overall.
no subject
[A pause, and he frowns in thought.]
...if they are, it certainly could be worse.
no subject
[ Aoba instantly thinks of Toue and Platinum Jail. His irritation is obvious, he's pretty much the type who wears his emotions on his sleeve even when he tries like hell to hide them. ]
I mean, we could have some maniacal scientist bent on world domination performing mind-control experiments on his own people and then some.
...Out of curiosity, how much worse can it get? In your experience.
no subject
...we were on a ship out in space, a while ago. Some... pretty bad shit went down. Killings, malicious aliens allowed on board, weird plants and drinks that would alter your behavior... [He shakes his head and subconsciously rubs one hand on the inside of his opposite arm.] It just wasn't good.
1.2
A ship. ]
...
no subject
Hey, you mean a spaceship, right? Eluvio?
no subject
...yeah. Karamatsu's probably mentioned it.
no subject
That, combined with Karamatsu's nervousness as he tried to regale a time when he almost got laid... he'd blown him off. Didn't even try to get the truth out of him, the truth which makes his brother look sick just from mentioning it. ]
...Tch! I... I didn't even ask.
It makes sense, now that I know. [ He feels like such a shitty friend, his hand slipping off his sleeve. ] Dammit!
no subject
...ah, it's. He's used to it. I'm sure if you asked him, now... [He steps away and waves a hand vaguely, still looking a little sick, but maybe in a different way.] He'd really appreciate the friendliness. [Why is he saying this.]
no subject
Anyway, that's not important right now. There's someone right here, who seems to have gone through a lot. This time, Aoba's not going to brush it aside or accept some lame answer. ]
But Ichimatsu.
You had to deal with this too, right? I have no business asking but... since you're the brother of my best friend, I want to know if you're... okay?
no subject
--I'm fine. It was a while ago.
no subject
Aoba should know better than to press, but he does anyway... just. Carefully. Delicately. Even that might not be enough. ]
...Is it really fine, though?
[ Just looking at him tells him that it's not, and he does perhaps the wrong thing with the right intention - he reaches out to him emotionally, because what comes naturally to Aoba isn't necessarily what works for everyone else in the multiverse. ]
Ichimatsu, you've been through some troubling stuff.
If you... I mean, if you want to talk to anyone... it's probably hard to talk about but...
[ He trails off, questioning himself for going even this far. Sure, this is Karamatsu's brother, but they really don't know each other very well and it's hard enough to open up even to a familiar face. ]
no subject
[So he just tsks softly, shrugging his shoulders and scowling as he looks away.]
The hell's it to you? You don't even know me.
[Ah yes. Wrap yourself in barbed wire and strike everyone who tries to get close to you, Ichimatsu. If you're mean before they get too close, nobody will see that the barbs are cutting you open, too.]
look at this pro ichimatsu
I wonder what this little guy's story is?
[ He hooks his fingers onto the partition and watches the animal groom itself. It seems healthy, happy, well taken care of. Well socialized too. ]
Does he have a family here? Was he raised in captivity or was he caught? Does he have a name? How old is he?
...I don't think we really need to know these things or what kind of background to care about the little guy. [ Aoba looks up at Ichimatsu. He's not trying to compare him to an animal but he's trying to explain his reasoning in simpler terms. ] I think if he got sick or something bad happened to him, it's normal for someone to be concerned. Especially when you're not in a place where you'd normally be.
gurgles
[He looks from Aoba to the animal and back, kissing his teeth again.]
It's unnecessary to waste your concern on something that didn't ask for it.
he's so constipated I love it
you will love it less when he aggressively shits emotions at you
I hope you don't mean literal shit because scat is under my hard no list
then you're barking up the wrong matsu my friend
